Michael Barone: The media wishes Palin had aborted Trig

A botched joke, or so he claims. Lacking any obvious punchline, it’s “humor” in the same way that the left crying “satire!” whenever they cross the line makes that humor.
Wanting Palin to abort the baby? No. Fretting conspicuously that a woman with a baby might not be qualified to run for high office (hint hint, girls)? That theory was known to pop up now and again.
Barone said in an e-mail that he “was attempting to be humorous and … went over the line.”
Barone was speaking at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, to the 121st annual meeting of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, which calls itself the nation’s oldest higher-education association.
“The liberal media attacked Sarah Palin because she did not abort her Down syndrome baby,” Barone said, according to accounts by attendees. “They wanted her to kill that child. … I’m talking about my media colleagues with whom I’ve worked for 35 years.”…
About 500 people were in the room, and some walked out.
He redeemed himself by asking for a show of hands regarding which cable news networks the audience watched. Try to guess the breakdown, then click and scroll down to the end of the story.
As a bonus, here’s more vid from Lauer’s interview of mommy with her band of little career impediments.

That’s because Liberals react to everything on an emotional level. Because of that they have this driving need to try and belittle the accomplishments of those that they don’t agree with or feel threatened by. If they cant do that they just flat out ignore those accomplishments. Its like when Sarah Palin was announced as McCain’s VP pick and the Obama campaign wouldn’t acknowledge the fact that she is Governor of Alaska and instead only talked about her being Mayor of Wasilla. Even going as far as calling her the Mayor of Wasilly. (and yes I do believe when Obama makes little slips like that it is intentional. He thinks he is the master of the back handed insult).

Yeesh. All I have to say is this: We the people have completely forgotten how to differentiate what is our business and what is none of our business.
Live your own life accroding to your personal principles and stop looking around to see what everyone else is doing and what they think. What I love about Palin is, she truely doen’t care what any of us think about her family. She cares what we think about her record and her politics and how we feel about the generic things that are important to our own little micro-economies. Her kids, husband and personal life are NONE OF OUR BUSINESS.
The press should never have broken the “family is off limits” rule. Regardless of anything else, that horrendous dam break on their part was the end of journalism in this country. Now we are all forced to watch as they eat themselves and each other.
I guess I had a lot more to say than I thought.
Peace out. I need wine or something.
Oh and sexism is bad. Hmkay?

I’m just a dumb canuck on the sidelines, but Sarah Palin energized me! She’s my kind of gal. Large imperfect family, hunter/gatherer writ large, mom, protector and provider. Can you honestly put any of these labels on Barry or Michelle Obama? Nohow noway. The Obama’s believe they are God’s gift to us. nuff said.

This just brought it all back. I get so upset when it is easy for people, to create a life. Then throw it away. Like it is nothing. The place I worked at was rewarding. So many different cases. All types of children. Saw the love and devotion of the parents. One couple lived almost 4 hours. They were there almost everyday. Saw children that no one came to see. Was able to bring kids home on my day off. That was years ago. I almost broke down. Had to quit.
Thank you Dee. Makes me miss what I use to do.

There’s not a chance in the world she won’t be running again. The only question is whether she takes Stevens seat or not first. I hope she does, as well as put out a book to make her a wealthy woman upon arriving in Washington.

Hiya Gang -
If you want to see a 49 year old man cry, stick around. I have a special daughter. She is developmentally delayed. She is 21. When she got out of school, she attnded a special school where she was taught how to work in an office with Microsoft products. She is also the “Dear Abby” to all her friends via cell phone. She spent the last weekend with me and my girlfriend. We had a blast and I
can’t imagine my life without her. When I go to bed tonight,
I will say a special prayer for this generation. If they truly believe that eugenic-driven abortion is a moral option, they are to be pitied. Anyone who does not believe in the sanctity of life does not have a clue.
kingsjester on November 11, 2008 at 9:35 PM
Thank you for your words. But I am not willing to allow this atrocity. I don’t judge, I counsel. I spent most of my college years and many thereafter working with church groups to counsel young women on alternatives outside of abortion. I am sorry to say that my success rate was not near 100% but there were many who either chose to keep their children with the support of their families or chose the route of adoption.

One woman’s burden is another woman’s blessing.
Bob Mc on November 11, 2008 at 9:37 PM
I agree with Michael Barone!!!!!!!!!
I have always felt that the women who reacted so hatefully toward Palin reacted that way because they WISH SHE HAD ABORTED at least her most recent baby if not more.
Her raising a family of 5 children (and now one grandchild) and being married to a decent rugged man and STILL BEING ABLE to get to the position of governor of Alaska and then get the spot for GOP vice-president just drives those abortaholic feminists wild!
Think about it folks – Palin got to her level of success while raising a big family and without violently murdering any of her children. The liberal pro-abort feminists out there who have murdered ONE OR MORE OF THEIR OWN CHILDREN just to go after a career as an English teacher or something like that look at Palin and think “She got that far without murdering any of her children!? THIS IS SO WRONG!!”
So, Barone is right. They wanted her to kill Trig since they reason that they had to murder their own children to be successful.
And we all know that pro-aborts often justify babies having a genetic problem or being born without one or more limbs as good reasons for killing those innocent children.
So yes, the pro-abort feminists want to see Trig Palin aborted and are offended that she is spending time, energy and money raising that boy. Theose pro-aborts consider Trig to be Lebens unwertes Leben – life unworthy of life. That is why they hate Palin so much. Because her compassionate actions fly in the face of their thinking.

sheebe on November 11, 2008 at 9:38 PM
Right on! My Dad said that thousands of women hate Palin simply because they had abortions for convenience and Sarah let Trig live.
The MSM is chock full of career women who had at least one abortion in their lives for convenience. Out of the 500 in the gathering, you can bet 20-80 of the women had abortions.
The ones who walked out were women who had abortions, or pursuaded someone to get an abortion, or a man who impregnated a woman and ran out on her, I’d bet my balance sheet on it.
We have a ton of disgusting, selfish, conniving, holier-than-though media and most of them are leftists. A net negative for humanity unfortunately.
Sapwolf on November 11, 2008 at 9:39 PM
I have no problem with what Barone said, only that he backed off. You would be hard pressed to argue that it’s not the truth, and if the truth offends some people, then so be it.
I’m sick and tired of conservatives backing away from the truth because it might offend liberals. When we surrender that kind of ground to them, we put ourselves closer to defeat.

I’ll take Michael Barone’s hint of the media one step further:
The media probably less wishes Palin had chosen to abort Trig than that they, the media, wish they had the power to force Palin to have aborted Trig. The media aren’t interested in choices besides the choices they would seek to make for others.
viking01 on November 11, 2008 at 9:47 PM

Actually, it’s 90% of babies who are pre-natally diagnosed with Down syndrome. Many pro-life people don’t get the tests, at least, the accurate ones which are invasive and elevate the risk for miscarriage or birth defects. (If you don’t intend to abort anyway, why increase the risk of a miscarriage?) The non-invasion tests (AFP, for example) have a fairly high inaccuracy rate. (I’ve known of several false positives and at least one false negative. The ones I knew with the false positives refused invasive tests, so they did not know until birth the children did not have DS. The false negative was mine. But I wouldn’t have aborted anyway — and he is the light of my life.)
CJ on November 11, 2008 at 9:59 PM
Barone was only partially correct.
The media wishes she had aborted ALL her babies.
Labamigo on November 11, 2008 at 10:05 PM
Forgive me for my being niave, but I’ve never REALLY thought about this from the male perspective. It sounds like less than a few of you have been heartbroken by a woman’s “right” to chose (meaning the woman has chosen to kill your child). How heartbreaking!
If it is any, any consolation, she wasn’t worth it if she didn’t have any consideration of your feelings.
My one solace? I have been married to my husband for 25 years. We went through this together before our marriage, and made a heartbreakingly wrong decision for both of us in hindsight. We are both adamently pro-life, but were woefully ignorant at the time. We both pray daily for forgiveness, look into the eyes of our two wonderful children, and wonder what we –unknowingly–robbed them and us of because we were very, very uninformed and selfish.
No excuses, not whining, just facts.
Chewy the Lab on November 11, 2008 at 10:06 PM
I wish the dumb azz citizens of this country would have aborted O’Blamha. Trig will be just fine thank you.
GlocknRoll on November 11, 2008 at 10:08 PM
I agree. The word “wanted” is probably the one that sends Allah off to hug some liberals and wring his hands. And maybe that’s the wrong word, wanted. Maybe what he should have said is that they think she’s stupid for not aborting Trig. Stupid and selfish.
Someone threw out a 90% figure for Down Syndrome abortions – no idea where that comes from. But it indicates the level of sickness that we’re talking about.

The media wants/needs for Palin to be a hypocrit. By being so “extreme” in her abortion views, they needed to be able to pull a scandal out of her past to bash her with.
But having a child with special needs and Trig being the fifth child at that, means that not only is Palin pro-life in her views, but she also lives it.
Which is why Andrew Sullivan jumped all over Palin for having amnio as if having the amnio meant she and Todd considered that they might abort if they got an undesirable result.
That kills the media. The love it when family values politicians have affairs or when a pro-life leader has some sort of deep, dark abortion secret.
So far, it seems like Sarah Palin is a pretty honest politician and the media can’t stand it. But they will keep looking for something to disillusion her supporters with.
myrenovations on November 11, 2008 at 10:33 PM
I don’t sneer either. But I can feel sad about it. And as a Catholic I respectfully disagree and still feel sympathy or sorrow. In my Catholic mind, it still cannot be rationalized in a few paragraphs. Believe me, I’ve tried to with other sins. Life is too short to make excuses, but we are not perfect.
When my wife was pregnant and I accompanied her to visit her doctor, the doctor asked if we would have amnioscentisis (spelling?) performed. I didn’t know what that was or what it was for. After the doctor gave a short detail about it, I obviously was beginning to get pissed off at him because after my wife (licensed RN) explained it further, the implication by the doctor was that I would be for killing our child if he/she showed a positive result. It took all my self-control to not lash out at the doctor for what to me was a terrible terrible insult. I also did not want to upset my wife. As Catholics, we quickly agreed that such a test was unnecessary and frankly, ridiculous. My boy could have popped out looking like an iguana and he’d still be Johnny. My love for him would not change.
My boy has motor skill problems and is a year and a half behind other kids. He will be 6 years old this month. He justed started kindergarten this August. I joked with my Dad that he might not be the brightest bulb on the tree and that I might save a lot of money him not going to college. We had a good laugh.
But, I’ll make sure he has every chance. :)

Someone called the local radio show on Friday and actually said, straight out, that Palin should have aborted Trig, because it’s cruel to bring a DS baby into the world. He then finished his diatribe by saying, verbatim, “The Nazis gave eugenics a bad rap.”
I was literally shocked. I couldn’t speak for a minute. Then I remember I live in Seattle, and this is really par for the course. Culture of death, indeed.

I save it for folks that really deserve it, but if you and I were in the small room and you said something like that, you’d be picking your teeth out of your poop.
You leftist bastards see nothing you do as illicit or evil but see a family who decided to take on the hardships of raising a DS child and you have the balls to say they’d do something like that because of the PFD.
You do not deserve the O2 you’re sucking down you evil freak.

I consider myself a fairly aware and open-minded person, but I confess to having been caught totally off-guard by the reaction to Palin.
I thought she was a truly inspired choice when I heard the announcement of her VP candidacy, and ‘had her back something fierce’. Then I saw the tidal wave of rabid rancourous hate swamp her.
I know there are still people that are racist and deride Obama, but they’re a defunct minority. The violent sexism that assaulted Palin from men & women of all persuasions left me feeling speechless and naive.
I am truly horrified that I live among people that can behave this way. This realization has been the most brutal and unsettling awakening regarding American society.
Limey, my experience exactly. It has radicalized me, and changed me forever.

Andrew Sullivan is a guy who will NEVER understand the whole issue of a woman carrying a pregnancy to term, high risk or no risk. He wants to raise rumors because he can, not because he must find “the truth”. He knows there is nothing there, but he insists on it anyway – that’s how he gets his paycheck.
Believe me when I tell you that I have been tempted to shoot him a note like this,

A lot of this “culture of death” electorate decided the future of this country for the next four years, at least. This does not bode well for us.

We all make errors. We are forgiven. Your post was enlightening. Years ago, when I was 11. My parents best friend raped me. I was very advanced for my age. A few weeks later. My mom got me from school. Told me that the doctor needed to do something. To take care of a disease that I had gotten. I was young and didn’t know. It was an abortion. I found out when I was 28. I was a smart ass person, and was very mean to my fathers girlfriend. She had an abortion. Then when she left, he told me what really happened. We all make errors. And trust me. We are forgiven. I had a hard time with this.
sheebe on November 11, 2008 at 11:36 PM
Just because he has to take back what he said doesn’t make it any less true.
False positives on that test are common and women abort anyway. I don’t understand the fear of Down Syndrome. Every DS person in my life has been a blessing.
I loved Palin for walking around as a postpartum woman who did not act like she was a victim of her own body. Women are capable of functioning normally while multiplying. I’m not a fan of the sitcom theatrics of many.

I have enjoyed how BJ Clinton’s actions have allowed the radical feminists to discredit themselves.
The combination of attacks on Palin by the press, “feminists”, and Leftist pundits will do much more damage to each.
Despite this election, which was a bit of a perfect storm, the Left will be completely marginalized.

Quote from DU: “I wish she had aborted the TISSUE and gotten on with her life.” That was the opening salvo in the attacks on her. The Obama campaign claimed they had nothing to do with these attacks, yet a disaffected Obama campaign woman wrote they had to “crank” up their misinformationon on her because they were surprised about her being picked for VP.
Right, nothing to do with it, thug.

Sort of the way conservatives react to issues like abortion, atheist activists and gay marriage?
You mean the way conservatives belittle those who have PhDs and law degrees from demanding Ivy League institutions?
By calling them “elitists”? Oh wait, that’s conservatives.
Kind of like only referring to Obama as a community organizer, rather than as a constitutional law professor or head of the Harvard Law Review or State Senator?
Maybe you missed the Giuliani, Huckabee, Liebermann speeches at the RNC. Flattering? Not so much.
Look you are correct about your dislike of liberals looking down on conservatives. But conservatives do the same thing. Again with the hypocrisy.
DeathToMediaHacks on November 12, 2008 at 8:07 AM

There were threads at Gawker devoted to that very topic.

Sadly, Barone is absolutely right. Interestingly, Obama, were he a journalist, would be amongst the crowd, because he opposed a law which would prevent an aborted but born alive Downs’ Syndrome baby from dying of exposure:
Abortions which provide selection by sex are frowned upon, and if, should the “gayness genes” ever be found, abortions for that might be frowned upon as a form of “homophobia”. But in a world of Choice (TM), in this era before we get to fix our child’s genes to give him or her the smartness, beauty, and disease-free lives we all wish we had, frowning will probably be the extent of journalistic outrage for any abortion.

I think Trig is the new face of choice and have noticed the media isn’t fawning over him like “what a cute baby” and whatever they do for the Jolie/Pitt, Cruise babies of the world so maybe Barone has a point, even if he tried to backtrack. In fact, Charles Krauthammer said on Fox’s Special Report:
“In Palin’s case, I think what adds to it is her decision at her age with four other children to have a down syndrome child. This, too, as Joseph Epstein wrote, in feminist circles if abortion is not about this, what’s it about?
And they look at her as sort of a back room — a backwater hick, who, for religious reasons, went ahead and had a child that they would never have.
Underneath it, I think, deep underneath it, I think it’s a self-loathing on the part of these feminists, knowing that what she did is virtuous and a generous act that they would have never have undertaken. And her having undertaken it is an affront to them, a silent rebuke.”

I think he is dead on in his comments.
Having a successful, inspirational female politician that chose life is a nightmare for the left. This is a very prominent reason for why they hate her.
We should absolutely be using this line of attack against the left. I beat him to the punch and have used this type of comment – and trust me it is very effective in getting them worked up.
The unfortunate truth is that most pro-abortion (I don’t call them pro-choice since they clearly do not support the choice of life) types would absolutely choose an abortion if they were informed their unborn was afflicted with Down’s syndrome.
I think that is absolutely disgusting.
While Trig and the Palin family face special challenges in the future – I have no doubt he is going to be one of the dearest, sweetest people you could ever hope to meet – as are all the Down’s afflicted people I have had the pleasure of knowing thru my lifetime.
I’m not real comfortable using Trig as a sort of ‘political pawn’ in this endeavor, but I can’t argue with what Barone said.

I don’t know that “they wanted her to abort Trig” but I do think that many absolutely don’t understand why she didn’t. Perhaps they realized that their choice would have been abortion and her route made them feel guilty?
I’ve read comments on blogs about how “she probably didn’t because it would be a politicial liability in appealing to the far-right.” Why else would she have had the testing done if she wasn’t considering abortion? And criticisim because she included the baby in appearances.
In fact I’ve read trashing on conservative blogs faulting her motherhood values for not staying at home with “that poor handicapped baby.” As if she had no right to run for office because of her child. I guess they thought she should hide at home with Trig? And this was from supposedly conservative posters.

If I’d only read your comment first, I wouldn’t have needed to type my last one. Charles Krauthammer has it exactly right.

Great observation.
At the same time, I always thought Barone had more c*jones than to back off when telling the truth. He was trying to repair his stature among the media but it cost him among those of us who value truth.

signed off before your post, and don’t know if you’ll check back here, but wanted you to know your story touched my heart. That’s a toughy, in that case–rape of a child–your mother made the right decision, but it is no less heartbreaking. Too bad they didn’t castrate the rapist, too.
Thanks for the cyberhug.

What an obnoxious as*hole this Michael Barone is.

You still don’t get it. This is a blog for adults. You have no right to demand that:
You are a nut. And you can still piss off.

I was right in the first place.

Regardless of the prevailing societal norms and the various justifications for abortion in cases such as this, people know in their hearts that it was an act of the greatest generosity and virtue for Sarah Palin to have had Trig. Naturally, of course, they hate her for it. There is nothing that people like less than to be confronted with someone who has the virtues that they themselves do not, particularly when the virtuous person is someone that the group believes to be their intellectual, moral or social inferior.
This really was the source of Bush derangement syndrome all along – Bush’s decency and moral courage.
pussum207 on November 12, 2008 at 10:34 AM
John McCain should have aborted Sarah.

I did not know that there are actually churches that are prochoice. I did know about the Born Alive bill introduced in Illinois, which Obama did not support. Jill Stanek talks to O’Reilly in this video regarding her fight for infants born alive of abortion.

Too bad Mr. Barone’s mother hadn’t aborted him.
What an asinine thing to say.
SmallGovtGuy on November 12, 2008 at 11:01 AM
My only concern with what Barone said, other than it being the absolute truth, is that he was trying to be funny? Are you kidding, Barone? What the he** is funny about that? Horrifying, yes; funny, not so much.
Like many of you have said, why keep apologizing for the truth? The truth hurts, but it will also set you free.
I am sick to death of the spineless! Spineless conservative pundits, spineless Republican politicians, spineless Catholic priests and bishops…
Come on! Get a spine, grow a pair, stand up and tell the truth and do the right thing!
