Michael Barone: The media wishes Palin had aborted Trig

posted at 7:54 pm on November 11, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | regular view

A botched joke, or so he claims. Lacking any obvious punchline, it’s “humor” in the same way that the left crying “satire!” whenever they cross the line makes that humor.

Wanting Palin to abort the baby? No. Fretting conspicuously that a woman with a baby might not be qualified to run for high office (hint hint, girls)? That theory was known to pop up now and again.

Barone said in an e-mail that he “was attempting to be humorous and … went over the line.”

Barone was speaking at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, to the 121st annual meeting of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, which calls itself the nation’s oldest higher-education association.

“The liberal media attacked Sarah Palin because she did not abort her Down syndrome baby,” Barone said, according to accounts by attendees. “They wanted her to kill that child. … I’m talking about my media colleagues with whom I’ve worked for 35 years.”…

About 500 people were in the room, and some walked out.

He redeemed himself by asking for a show of hands regarding which cable news networks the audience watched. Try to guess the breakdown, then click and scroll down to the end of the story.

As a bonus, here’s more vid from Lauer’s interview of mommy with her band of little career impediments.

Sadly Allah, I’ve run into young people at some of the less mature boards (games and such) who really do think retards don’t deserve to live and are a waste of resources.

They have to get it from somewhere.

BKennedy on November 11, 2008 at 7:58 PM

“They wanted her to kill that child …”

Wait ’til he’s old enough to understand and then say it to his face.

Tony737 on November 11, 2008 at 7:59 PM

I think that he’s probably right. They did want her to abort Trig. That’s what happens to most Down Syndrome babies because they are burdens.

Illinidiva on November 11, 2008 at 7:59 PM

Wait, I clearly recall some in the media suggesting that Trig should have been aborted. I am sure of it.

Glynn on November 11, 2008 at 8:00 PM

Barone was just saying what they actually were thinking. I wouldn’t apologize if I were him. The media hated Palin and what Trig represented.

I had the feeling all along that the Palins were just enjoying the heck out of the campaign trail, and evidently they were. Good for them.

Bravo Allah. *applauds*

I LOVE this family. And I don’t even know them.

How could Palin have aborted Trig when it was her daughter who was pregnant with him? *sigh*

Weight of Glory on November 11, 2008 at 8:02 PM

Ninety percent of Down’s children are killed before birth.
Palin’s love for Trig is a rebuke to all of those who’ve had their “burdens” aborted.

I think Krauthammer has talked about this on multiple occasions on the panel.

Glynn on November 11, 2008 at 8:01 PM

Their words, not mine. I could have been more careful in my memory I suppose, but it slipped my mind.

Ironically, these same people also have no qualms calling you a bigot if you don’t support gay marriage.

So, useless non-reproductive wastes of public funding masquerading as an actual marriage? Sacred. Actual human beings? Not so much.

BKennedy on November 11, 2008 at 8:08 PM

What really pisses off the rad lefts is that Palin showed up the hypocrisy of their ‘pro-choice’ stance.
She did choose actually, she chose to have her child because she is pro-life.
But the left are actually pro-abortion, not pro-choice at all. No bloody choice about it. And goddamm everyone who doesn’t see it their way.

That’s one of the reasons why they hate her.

Ozwitch on November 11, 2008 at 8:08 PM

Eugenics is alive and well…

beththebaker on November 11, 2008 at 8:08 PM

Many women who have had medically non-essential abortions have lived long enough to be uncomfortable with their decisions.
Sarah and Trig push guilt buttons on many of these women.
Some of these women work in the news media.
Some men feel guilty about the abortions they have paid for.
Some of these men work in the news media.

I’ve heard the hate-dripping tone in many news media voices.
That tone is not there because they think Sarah is a dumb huckleberry.

Zorro on November 11, 2008 at 8:09 PM

Not just the media – I think Hollywood too. Why else would Madonna do her “f*&$” Sarah Palin routine during her concerts? Doubtful it was because of Palin’s stances on other issues…

Matt Lauer? Jeez…why not invite Chris Matthews or Olberfreak to your house, Lauer was as much an Odummy shill as anyone.

BTW, that’s a nice place the Palin’s have.

Bishop on November 11, 2008 at 8:10 PM

Now that’s “speaking truth to power”.

Too bad he backed down.

Blaise on November 11, 2008 at 8:11 PM

The Palins were such a great, godly example for the entire world to see. One of my favorite pictures of Gov. Palin was when she was holding Trig on the night of the RNC. We should be thanking them for walking the walk and letting everyone know that each life has value. I would imagine that their story touched so many families with kids with disabilities. But even more than that, I am sure that they touched the lives of future parents who may one day have that choice to make, and as the Palins did, they may be more inclined to choose LIFE.

texasconserv on November 11, 2008 at 8:11 PM

Sorry but I agree with what Barone said. And I don’t think it’s funny.

D0WNT0WN on November 11, 2008 at 8:11 PM

Nice. Sadly I think he was actually telling the truth. Go back and read the transcript of the second part of the Couric interview where she argues with Palin about abortion for about 10 minutes. And didn’t a state DNC chairwoman somewhere (was it South Carolina?) say that Palin’s only qualification was that she hadn’t had an abortion?

mommy with her band of little career impediments.

Nice one!

Bishop on November 11, 2008 at 8:12 PM

I think Barone is right about that. They did want her to abort the child.

He should not apologize, and conservatives in general should stop apologizing for every bloody thing they say, or might have said, or implied, or by omission might be construed as implying.

sharrukin on November 11, 2008 at 8:12 PM

He’s right, I heard moonbats say exactly that myself.

Little Boomer on November 11, 2008 at 8:13 PM

Wanting Palin to abort the baby? No. Fretting conspicuously that a woman with a baby might not be qualified to run for high office (hint hint, girls)?

Almost as bad as dismissing an early presidential contender with expertise in energy issues and government reform as the “pro-life” family values candidate, huh AP?

Y-not on November 11, 2008 at 8:17 PM

The irony, is that he was correct. The media (and elitists, like Noonan, and Couric), and the women in the media in particular, were insulted that she could have brought some one into this world who was not “perfect”.
I sensed it every time a mention of Trig, they always brought up that she didn’t abort…kind of like the trite saying, after dissing a black man “Some of them are my best friends”.
They were appalled that someone would want an “imperfect” child…you know that they have lost the ability to love unconditionally.

jgapinoy on November 11, 2008 at 8:02 PM

Her decision is also a lesson about accepting responsibility in one’s life.

This is a concept that is alien to Liberals. Of course, they despise her.

Cody1991 on November 11, 2008 at 8:22 PM

Wanting Palin to abort the baby? No.

Un, yeah. I have read comments expressing this exact sentiment on a number of forums. I doubt the media feels any differently than the moonbats they serve. What I find astounding is that you would deny it.

Blake on November 11, 2008 at 8:22 PM

Typical Baronian nuance.

JammieWearingFool on November 11, 2008 at 8:24 PM

Don’t apologize.

Alan Colmes overtly criticized Palin for not using correct pre-natal care, for crying out loud. (As if Colmes knows anything about the subject.)

Don’t apologize at all.

If it wasn’t overtly said, it was implied.

And I’m tired of the likes of Olderdouche getting to say whatever he wants, but WE have to apologize when we speak the tough truth.

Screw it. Stop apologizing.

Hawkins1701 on November 11, 2008 at 8:24 PM

There was a ToL female columnist advocating for the abortion of late term DS kids and even kids with an effin harelip.

Blake on November 11, 2008 at 8:24 PM

Its only shocking because it’s true, The press does wish Palin had aborted Trig, and in my opinion if the press gets all cut up because someone calls them out for being intellectually callous and petty then perhaps they should learn to keep their opinions to themselves and stick to reporting the facts for a change.

Dreadnought223 on November 11, 2008 at 8:26 PM

There are some great posts on this thread…take time and read the love and respect for life…awesome to be a conservative with a conscience and a moral compass.
The best part of this campaign, was that it brought a remarkable woman, with a remarkable story to America…and through that it separated the hate filled from the love filled.
Seldom if ever, did they attack her on issues, but just with hate and loathing for the light she carried with her.
The irony…maybe she was the ONE, in this campaign…

I’m disappointed Michael backed down on this. We need to hold their feet to the fire long enough that they can’t walk out.

Dee2008 on November 11, 2008 at 8:27 PM

I think it was more she is pro-choice and Trig is proof of that. Pro-choice women don’t fair well in today’s society, sadly.

Sue on November 11, 2008 at 8:28 PM

Sarah Palin gives birth to Trig and 4 months later she is giving a barn burner of a speech accepting the nomination for VPOTUS. That scenario takes a whole lot of credence away from some giant rationalizations by the pro choice media. They would have taken her situation and turned it into a hallmark card touting the “need” for choice had she chosen abortion. Has anyone ever heard a credible explanation for partial birth abortion? He should not apologize.

msmveritas on November 11, 2008 at 8:28 PM

AP, wake up! They did want her to abort the baby, then they would have respected her more.

Barone just said the truth. If that association could not handle the truth, it’s not his fault.

Sarah Palin’s choices with regard to Trig are between her, her family, her God, and Trig. It was disgusting to watch the media act otherwise.

And I’m pretty darn pro-choice myself.

Sekhmet on November 11, 2008 at 8:32 PM

It’s surprising, and then again it’s not, how frequently even at the “better” web sites you’ll encounter people who are quite self-righteous in their certainty that babies like Trig should be aborted. At times, they’ll go on at some length about what a poor role model Gov Palin is – it being bad enough that she’s overbred, only for her to have compounded the earth’s burden even further with this latest, totally “unproductive” offspring.

Don’t fool yourself. A significant percentage of the population thinks this way. Many have never even thought to question their beliefs. It was heavily reinforced during the “population bomb” and “limits to growth” scares of the ’60s and ’70s, and by now the children of that generation are themselves well into their childbearing and family-raising years, passing their beliefs onto their fewer than two children, or into the empty spaces that the children they’ve never had might have occupied – in a few cases, perhaps, while prepping their thoroughly objective stand-up reports on the just-past presidential election.

Next thing you know, we’ll have some boozy bimbo call Obama a “colored” guy.

jgapinoy on November 11, 2008 at 8:04 PM

The reason that the word “colored” came into vogue was because in the first few decades of the 20th century the word “black” was considered offensive. Now “black” is in vogue and “colored” is offensive. Thirty, forty years from now the vocabulary may have reversed itself.

aengus on November 11, 2008 at 8:32 PM

Should conservatives leave the media to themselves the way we have left universities to the liberals? That isn’t working out so well. I think Sarah can handle any media type and should do every show she can get on that commands a modicum of respect. Of course that leaves olberdouche and The View out of the running.

csdeven on November 11, 2008 at 8:33 PM

Stephen M

You’re right. They hate her because of the guilt, just as the Koskids hate the liberation of Iraq because they don’t have the courage to serve.

Basilsbest on November 11, 2008 at 8:33 PM

Thirty, forty years from now the vocabulary may have reversed itself.

So Lindsay Lohan isn’t just a drug and booze sodden pop tart? She’s a prophetess of the new lexicon?

Dee2008 on November 11, 2008 at 8:36 PM

I think many people that hate Sarah do so because of positions that have been pinned to her by this defamation campaign that she has never actually said anything about. Like the silliness about banning books, or that dinosaurs were around 4,000 years ago, throwing girls in jail for abortions, ect.

Of course, that was precisely the intention from the beginning.

Brian1972 on November 11, 2008 at 8:38 PM

I didn’t notice this when I watched the interview this morning for some reason, but did anyone else notice in the clip above that Lauer called Palin, “Sarah”? I’m sure she told him to, but I think it’s a little inappropriate for a journalist to call an elected official by his/her first name on the air. I can’t see him calling McCain, “John” during an interview.

meltenn on November 11, 2008 at 8:40 PM

Of course, that was precisely the intention from the beginning.

Brian1972 on November 11, 2008 at 8:38 PM

No, those were just an excuse, they knew they were lies. They just needed some excuse to object to a conservative woman…any excuse, even a “wrong” one was good enough to hide behind.

right2bright on November 11, 2008 at 8:40 PM

I think that he’s probably right. They did want her to abort Trig. That’s what happens to most Down Syndrome babies because they are burdens.

Illinidiva on November 11, 2008 at 7:59 PM

I hope you are speaking of experience? There are different stages of Down Syndrome. If one has love for their baby, it is never a burden. Some Down Syndrome’s can work, even live by themselves. Not getting on you. Is easy for one to say. If you never been there then you wouldn’t know. I do. Trig, doesn’t look severely down syndrome. I am proud that they knew. And they had that beautiful baby. They will be rewarded. Doing the unmentionable is at times not right.

sheebe on November 11, 2008 at 8:41 PM

Why is this a controversy? Barone is only telling the truth here!

Who walked out: The reporters who DID wish for this, and DIDN’T LIKE hearing someone SAY IT!!

grtflmark on November 11, 2008 at 8:42 PM

You can almost hear the whisperings from the Lauer interview:

“Why….she doesn’t have a nanny? She cooks for her family? Where is the interpretive art on the walls?”

Bishop on November 11, 2008 at 8:43 PM

meltenn on November 11, 2008 at 8:40 PM

I noticed that also, but I also noticed that with Greta (however she still says Gov. Palin).
I think that people, when in her element, get quite attached to her. They see the real unassuming quality of her life and her family.
I think you will find Matt Lauer, the liberal, a bit of a fan after this interview. He will try to hide it, but I can see him warm up to her. I think after the initial shock that she can actually speak intelligently wore off, he kind of dug her.

right2bright on November 11, 2008 at 8:44 PM

About 500 people were in the room, and some walked out.

“conscience-stricken; troubled by the idea of having acted wrongly”

Ah, yeah. I realize some people are put off by the Judeo-Christian (Biblical) concept of sin, but I think Barone was right. People who support abortion don’t like to face what it is they’re supporting, sinners generally don’t. But I don’t think he needs to apologize. He apparently managed not only to rip the scabs off of some unhealed wounds but did so while exposing the hypocrisy of being “pro-choice”.

oldleprechaun on November 11, 2008 at 8:44 PM

meltenn on November 11, 2008 at 8:40 PM

Heh, could you imagine the horror were Lauer to refer to His Exalted Holiness as “Barack” or “Barry?” Lauer would be fired on the spot.

Bishop on November 11, 2008 at 8:45 PM

I mean that was the intention of the extreme whacko opinions that were said to be Sarah’s thinking when in reality she has never advocated for anything like these things. The media wanted to blunt her obvious appeal right away, and it continues until this day. She’s just getting warmed up, and they know it. They all want to use her to prop up their falling ratings now that a lot of people are tuning out after the election. Sarah Palin is an eyeball magnet. Lover or hate her, she gets attention from all sides.

I think Illinidiva was being sarcastic. I don’t think most people on this thread would agree that Downs Syndrome babies are burdens.

Also, and I mean this in the kindest way possible, please don’t refer to our children as “Downs Syndromes.” I know you didn’t mean to be insulting because of the rest of your comments seemed very supportive, and you probably didn’t realize how it would sound. But as the mother of a Down Syndrome baby, I want my child recognized as a child, not as a syndrome.

Dee2008 on November 11, 2008 at 8:52 PM

If anyone bothered to listen to her, she is not the religious whacked out snake handler that has been portrayed by some. For our media types, just mentioning God or prayer in a sentence is enough to be run out of town.

I bet that wussy Lauer did not get on the snow machine like Greta did! Todd intimidated him too. It was obvious Matty didn’t want to get too snarky with Todd sitting there. He could have drilled Matty into the backyard head first, like on the North Slope!

I don’t think the media wishes Sarah had aborted her child. They just wish she would be quiet about bringing the child to term, because that might invalidate the choice to abort. Nothing must challenge the sacred right to abort! She who exposes the right to choose to moral scrutiny must die! Makes me wonder how the media is receiving last night’s episode of Boston Legal. Never thought David E. Kelley would be making a case for life!

ktrush on November 11, 2008 at 8:55 PM

I admire Sarah Palin for risking a great deal to bring life into the world to love and protect.

But I think I need to point out a certain reality contradicting some of the comments made above. Trisomy 21 is not nothing, and trisomy 21 pregnancies have more risk than other pregnancies, and I’m not just talking about the significant physical risks that any pregnant woman faces.

Trisomy 21 pregnancies have a higher maternal complication rate, a higher spontaneous abortion and stillbirth rate. Intrauterine demise is fairly common and is not a benign condition…it can lead to DIC and death. All that on top of all the other physical issues of pregnancy, ( and I mean stuff like possibly bleeding to death or tearing a hole through your rectum, or getting kidney disease, or exacerbating an auto-immune conditions, etc, not getting cravings and having puffy feet),

Trisomy 21 affected persons deserve care and love and support. But there is spectrum of disability you might not be aware of. Some mosaic individuals have higher mental capacity and are less physically unhealthy, most people have heard of that, but not the other end of the spectrum: some are so severely affected they will be helpless, blind and bed-bound, unable to feed or turn themselves over. Most fall in between that. But it can be bad.

Trisomy 21 individuals may have malformations affecting many organ sytems, not just a reduced cognitive capacity.

Congenital heart disease is very common and typical requires surgincal intervention. Gastrointestinal malformations (atresias, fistulas, webs) all through the GI tract, eye problems ( cataracts, strabismus, glaucoma,)
Hearing loss ( about half the populations affected) with middle ear disease contributing. The spinal cord is subject to compression because the ligaments are lax and the spinal bones slip out of place.
There may be thyroid malfunction. They are subject to bone marrow dycrasias, and have an elevated rate of leukemia, about 18 times normal. Cruelest of all, neurdegenerative alzheimers-type disease occurs in most who survive past 40 years, and often begins much younger.

Women do have much at stake personally, and must weigh her own circumstances, her own risk tolerance, and the needs of her own family. I don’t sneer at any woman who opts not to carry a trisomy 21 pregnancy to term.

SarahW on November 11, 2008 at 8:56 PM

How dare she not have aborted Trig! was the underlying theme of much of the “she’s stupid” critique from the Madonna-oid / leftoid (”Palin is a C***“) loons.

(The scurrilous, vicious madness went deep and sick on the subject as any search can uncover.)

Barone was impolitic in his phrasing, but right on the money.

I consider myself a fairly aware and open-minded person, but I confess to having been caught totally off-guard by the reaction to Palin.

I thought she was a truly inspired choice when I heard the announcement of her VP candidacy, and ‘had her back something fierce’. Then I saw the tidal wave of rabid rancourous hate swamp her.

I know there are still people that are racist and deride Obama, but they’re a defunct minority. The violent sexism that assaulted Palin from men & women of all persuasions left me feeling speechless and naive.

I am truly horrified that I live among people that can behave this way. This realization has been the most brutal and unsettling awakening regarding American society.

To say I am disgusted at my fellow Americans is a pathetic understatement. I almost wish them death – that the world would be a cleaner place without their retarding influence.

My mother gave birth to my mentally retarded sister 30 years ago. She has been the light of our lives and a blessing for my family. She is a mid-level functioning adult who has the reading skills of a second-grader. She can’t drive, nor can she ever live alone. She loves people and people adore her. She doesn’t see color or race in people. She doesn’t see you as fat, thin, ugly or beautiful. She sees your heart and responds to that. This is why we cherish her as a member of our family. She makes us realize what is really important on a daily basis.

I can’t judge others for their choices. I can only say that I can’t ever imagine not having my sister in my life. God sends gifts in various ways. Ours was my sister and her perpetual joy.

If there really are people out there who condone aborting the mentally challenged, I only feel pity for their weaknesses.

You can spin it all you want. One should not kill their own child. You are as sick as any. Sorry that is a fact. Down deep you and the media both preferred she kill her child

If you are not willing to judge …you are willing to allow all sorts of injustices and atrocities. Other than that…great post.

I can understand what you say. But, this is a discussion board. There will be times when one has to overlook certain words. Being that I worked with children in an institution. I am a realistic person. That is the medical terminology. I won’t apologize for saying those words. If it was in person, or by chance meeting someone. Then no, I wouldn’t be that ignorant to say that word.

Libtards say “Die, Baby, Die!”

Which quite often is accomplished by drilling, ironically.

You know what I was waiting for?

When Matt Lauer asked Todd Palin…………. “So what do you think of the media?”…………

…….. and Todd responded my gently kissing Trig on the head, handing him off to Sarah, grabbing Matt Lauer by the neck, dragged him out to into the snow, and proceed to kick the living crap out of him, on camera.

……………… then did the same to the camera man. Only to leave them in the snow, in the middle of Alaska, going back into his warm house with his wife and family, locking the door behind him.

……………… now that would have been worth watching.

So far we have no idea what words Barone used.

We have hearsay “reported” by left leaning Democrats.

Words matter when you are telling a joke, and what I’d like is to hear the audio.

No audio — no trust.

I have been trying to articulate this in previous threads for days, and have failed. Choice means choice, period. I applaude your analysis.
BTW: We’ve now have a black an African American presidential nominee, and the second woman nominated. How ’bout Trig for prez in 204ty somethin?

Chewy the Lab on November 11, 2008 at 9:06 PM

That’s not spin, that’s REALITY. As real as a mother’s unconditional love.

“Down deep you and the media both preferred she kill her child”

That is a lie, and a terrible one. I do NOT prefer any such thing. Sorry you can’t comprehend that.

SarahW on November 11, 2008 at 9:08 PM

The hatred of Sarah Palin was irrational, and members of the press clearly shared that hatred.

For some of them, yes, it was because of Trig.

No, I don’t object to using the medical terminology. The distinction I tried to point out is between calling them “children with Downs Syndrome” and calling them “Downs Syndromes.” They are people with a condition. They are not that condition. Apparently I didn’t make myself clear. Sorry if I offended you.

Dee2008 on November 11, 2008 at 9:09 PM

The media what a joke.We have not had a honest media in years so who cares what they think or say.Just tonight the know it all look at me Bill O. said in a around about way that Palin cost McCain votes with the great unwashed Mod. because she was not smart enought.
