Happy Veterans Day!

posted at 7:35 am on November 11, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

Yesterday we saluted the Marine Corps on its 233rd anniversary, and today we honor the men and women who have defended our nation and kept us free.  Who says this isn’t a great week? This YouTube tribute uses the last two verses of “America the Beautiful” as a soundtrack for images from every major war in the last 100 years in which Americans have fought:

I am not a veteran myself, but many in my family have served. My father fought in Korea, I had two uncles in Vietnam, and I have uncles and cousins who served in war and peacetime. They have different political points of view and live across the country, but they all have their service to the nation in common.

Thanks to all of them, and all of our veterans, for preserving our liberty and our nation.  America is much more than just a spot on the map, or a nationality, and you represent the best of it.

I, too, would like to thank all veterans today – especially those who were busted less often than I was :P – and most especially those volunteers who are in harm’s way putting it all on the line for us today.

On more thing especially for today’s servicemen and women – do not let the Left demoralize you, like they did to so many of us who served during Vietnam. The better half of this nation knows that you are not baby-killers or civilian-strafers, and that you are, of your own free will, putting your lives on the line for us. Anyone who thinks different from the comfort of his stateside lounge chair is a coward and a traitor.

God bless and protect you all.

I wore the uniform with PRIDE, yet when I see these young men and women serving today, I feel humbled.

It would be an honor beyond measure to wear it again , alongside these people.

This vet says thank YOU.

We dedicated a new Veterans Memorial in Plano, TX this morning. I was there and it was a moving experience. We had several “new” veterans including at least one with no leg.

I spent 28 years (and 21 days!!) in the service of our country and standing next to those young men humbled me and inspired me at the same time.

With men and women like that we are, indeed, the greatest country on the face of the earth.

…and yes, given the chance I’d be back in uniform in a skinny second!!!!

The Owl thanks all of America’s veterans: those who served in war and peace, at home and abroad, in the past and at this very moment. Thank each and every one of you for your time, your service, your sacrifice and your patriotism.

The Owl also thanks you on behalf of the free peoples across the planet who owe their freedom to your service and noble calling.

God bless all our veterans today and every day. My husband is a vet, as were my father and all my brothers. If anyone feels like a nostalgic look back, I have a video on You Tube dedictated to my father, who served in WW II, Korea and Vietnam and retired with 32 years in the U.S. Army. He did two tours in Vietnam. He went ashore with the Army Corps of Engineers at Normandy. There are some great pictures from WW II. God Bless us all.

Here is an awesome tribute for vets: watch it here.

It runs about 10 minutes, but stay with it until the end – poignant, funny and really cuts to the heart of this day.

From one still on active duty to all those who went before me – many thanks!

As a vet myself, I say thanks to all that have served and are currently serving where ever they are. I understand the sacrifice and the courage that all of you have and am proud of each and every one.

I know that was said by someone else…I just don’t remember who, I should though…but all in all I lost some really good friends…and I miss them.

It’s also Remembrance Day here in Canada. I just visited our small town’s cenotaph dedicated to those who served in World War 1, World War 2 and the Korean War.

Thank you to all those that have served and currently serve in both the United States and Canada.

Funeral services over Arthur Thompson, whose remains arrived from France last Friday, were conducted by Rev. M. H. Hegge at the First Lutheran church Sunday afternoon.

September 15, 1921

Rest in peace, Arthur. Your family still remembers you.

Feel the patriotism by reading this.

Here’s to all my military buds – thanks guys and gals, we owe you big time.

To every veteran and to all those in the greatest military in the world that are protecting our freedoms: a simple, but heartfelt THANK YOU.

G-d speed.

The picture in the video of the paratroopers preparing to jump on D-Day brought tears to my eyes. My dad, God rest his soul, was part of that mission (82nd Airborne).

Lest we forget our Native American vets: Gateway Pundit has a post on a Marine just back from Iraq receiving a Northern Cheyenne war bonnet from his tribe. Wonderful photos!

Called my dad tonight and wished him a happy Veterans’ Day. He served on the USS Intrepid in ’54 and ’55 and got to see (on TV) President Bush speak from the deck of that great ship today. I was glad he got to see that. He said it brought back a lot of memories.
