Video: MSNBC falls for Palin/Eisenstadt hoax

posted at 6:00 pm on November 10, 2008 by Allahpundit

Specifically, this hoax. I’d love to throw stones at them and TNR, but people on our own side were taken in too.

Guys? The post at Shakespeare’s Sister revealing the hoax is linked on the first page of the Google results for “Martin Eisenstadt.” Remember these goofball viral “ads” for Giuliani? Anything look familiar?

The “Harding Institute for Freedom and Democracy”? Named after one of America’s worst presidents, whose term in office lasted two years with zero foreign policy accomplishments? Dude? Click the image to watch.

Have they retracted yet?

broker1 on November 10, 2008 at 6:01 PM

No surprise there, buffoons all. The question is … will they air a retraction?

darwin on November 10, 2008 at 6:02 PM

Hmmmm …..

Can you personally sue for mis-characterization of people via a viral lie turned hoax? Even though Sarah is probably above it, it might be a wise idea to sue this reject and shut him up about it.

I am sorry… but that is so fugging funny (the David Shuster video).

Liberals are so easy to manipulate, and they are using the ol…CBS, Rather mantra.
Hey libs, you are so stupid, and even more stupid when you try to defend yourselves for being stupid, which is really stupid…quad stupid.

Is it just me, or is eisenstadtgroup.com completely down right now?

wccawa on November 10, 2008 at 6:07 PM

Why is this even news to them when the Messiah of all that is Correct about the Universe was just elected President?

Elizabetty on November 10, 2008 at 6:07 PM

I smell another suspension coming on for David. Then again, maybe not although it would be richly deserved. Btw, who was that “Republican Strategist” that they had on the panel? Way to immediately crumble. How about saying that you never heard of this Eisenstadt guy before crediting him when pressed by that Eddie Munster looking doofus Schuster.

right2bright on November 10, 2008 at 6:13 PM

I’d love to throw stones at them and TNR, but people on our own side were taken in too.

Yeah, but AP there’s a difference between bloggers or websites like Newsbusters getting taken and multi-billion dollar news organizations like NBC/MSNBC not adequately vetting a story/source. The latter is far more irreponsible (granted, it’s Shuster).

Besides, we just got our heads handed to us last Tuesday. We need something to rally around.

SteveMG on November 10, 2008 at 6:13 PM

David Shuster must have some heavy duty connections around the beltway. He’s always on top of breaking news.

“Rove to be indicted in Libby Scandal”

fogw on November 10, 2008 at 6:13 PM

This is EXACTLY what I said would happen…TNR publishes it just long enough for the MSM to pick it up and smear Palin on the airwaves. Now that it’s debunked, they will NOT clear it up. Just like CNN apologized to York.

B*ST*RDS!

Good question. I suppose it’s a pre-emptive strike. Sarah is the threatening she-demon still who MUST BE DESTROYED.

ddrintn on November 10, 2008 at 6:14 PM

Since when is anything “verified” or “looked in to” when it comes to mocking Conservatives?

Marcus on November 10, 2008 at 6:14 PM

Here’s a nice little nugget from the HuffPo commentary…

To be clear, none of this means the Africa story is false — just that it probably didn’t come from this source.

Big John on November 10, 2008 at 6:15 PM

I’d love to throw stones at them and TNR, but people on our own side were taken in too.

Aren’t they supposed to verify the source? Shouldn’t they have called the McCain campaign to verify that this person even WORKED for them? Maybe this is Carl Cameron’s source, too.

Heh, riiiiiight. So the Obama-as-Muslim story isn’t false, we just have to come up with a source to confirm it. What shits.

ddrintn on November 10, 2008 at 6:19 PM

I love all the misplaced Palin judging still going on in the MSM. Apparently it is the job of the Vice President to give media interviews but it is not the job of reporters to properly f***ing source a G******ed story now and again.

Yes and no. They don’t have the resources to vet sources similar to a major news network.

David Shuster is the national news correspondent for a major cable news network.

Any comparison between Newsubsters and MSNBC isn’t valid.

the_nile on November 10, 2008 at 6:45 PM

WOW it seems lately the Legacy Media has decided to just not bother with any form of fact checking or verification of stories that it reports. Maybe since their research staff has been reduced due to budget cut backs they have decided to resort to the Homer Simpson method of investigative journalism – Just report any old crap that they find on the Internet and hope that eventually something will turn out to be true.

But the thing that galls me the most about it is the fact that they sensationalise these obviously false reports and then when the storey is revealed to be a load of bull they not only gloss over the entire incident but also refuse to take responsibility for giving credence to the story in the first place.

Seriously it is really time that the media be held accountable for their continued lack of ethics or integrity.

Vernon Hardapple on November 10, 2008 at 6:48 PM

To be fair when a senior campaign aid that you trust hands you a phone and tells you that the President of France is on the other end and wants to have a chat your not exactly going to be thinking “I wonder if this is a crank call from Canada”.

To tell you the truth I think that any of the candidates having received that call would have reacted exactly the same way and really it was the fault of the campaign staff for not vetting the call properly in the first place.

As for Sarah Palin’s supposed level of intelligence I think I can confidently say that she is a hell of a lot more intelligent than you are.

Wonder why nobody picks up on the “immature” part, which makes it clear that they’re all whining brats?

warbaby on November 10, 2008 at 7:59 PM

Honestly, I think all these guys are getting woodies when they talk dirty about Mrs. Palin. And that episode about only a towel wrapped around that gorgeous body of hers, that was in their dreams, too.

The funniest thing is that when you go to the hoaxster’s website, it doesn’t take long at all to realize something’s up. Look at the other posts. It smells like Onion.

I think there needs to be more hoaxters out there so it is easier for horrible journalism in the MSM and at BSNBC to be revealed.

When I was a kid, I used to trust the media, but by the time I was a senior in high school, and had seen reporting on events I was actually at, and half of the “facts” of the story were simply incorrect, I started noticing all the poor journalism throughout the media.

If the media admitted their mistakes it would be just real funny , but they just pick up all shit they can find and throw it on their victim . Censoring any wrongdoings.
When the media brakes down on this scale it’s a direct threat to the open democracy.

This is analog to the “moral hazard” at wall street.

the_nile on November 11, 2008 at 3:51 AM

Just a reminder that MM fell for him also

That’s been the left-wing blogger obsession all day. It started with a post from GOP blogger Martin Eisenstadt, who says that Joe Wurzelbacher the Plumber is a “close relative” of Robert Wurzelbacher, who is the son-in-law of Charles Keating. Robert Wurzelbacher served time for his role in the Keating 5 S&L scandal, gave a lot of money to Republicans, and is retired in Cincinnati. There is still no clear indication how exactly they are related and what “close” means.

The press keeps reporting this story about the campaign talking about her in anegative light.

There was no one in the campaign talking about her, it all came from this hoaxer.

Carl Cameron needs to go public with what he shared with greta – he blew it. He got the story out there, he needs to come forward and apologize to Sarah Palin – who btw doesn’t need to defend herself from a hoaxer.

Sarah Palin’s people need to turn it around and put it on Carl Cameron and all the news people who continue to report it.

AprilOrit on November 11, 2008 at 3:55 PM

“Can you personally sue for mis-characterization of people via a viral lie turned hoax? Even though Sarah is probably above it, it might be a wise idea to sue this reject and shut him up about it.”
Not sure if this applies, but I found it when looking up if Joe could sue.
II. False Light
A false light claim can arise anytime you unflatteringly portray -in words or pictures- a person as something that he or she is not. A typical “false light” problem can arise where a misleading caption is published with a photo (for example, a caption describes a bystander at an unlawful demonstration as a “participant”). The elements of false light, found in the Restatement (Second) of Torts, Sec. 652E are:
(1) the portrayal must be found to be “highly offensive to a reasonable person” and
(2) the actor had knowledge of or acted in reckless disregard as to the falsity of the publicized matter and the false light in which the other would be placed.

The same legal standards that apply to libel apply to false light. The distinction between false light and libel is that in false light claims one need not prove injury or damage to reputation, but only that the statement was highly offensive. Courts in some states have refused to recognize false light claims because of their similarity to libel.
