The return of The Wall?

The New York Times’ Eric Lichtblau takes a look at a potential Attorney General nominee in the nascent Barack Obama administration — and it’s a familiar face.  Jamie S. Gorelick may be on Obama’s short list for AG, but she has been a familiar face during the Bush administration, too.  Gorelick served under Janet Reno during the Clinton administration and played a critical role in blinding counterterrorism efforts prior to 9/11:

Would bring to the job: A wide-ranging Washington résumé that spans corporate, legal and national security affairs. Ms. Gorelick (pronounced Guh-REH-lick) was the No. 2 official at the Justice Department in the Clinton administration, from 1994 to 1997, and if chosen would be the second woman to be named attorney general, following her former boss, Janet Reno. Ms. Gorelick would also bring corporate experience to an Obama administration at a time of financial crisis.

Is linked to Mr. Obama by: Deep contacts in Democratic circles and a background in civil rights. But Ms. Gorelick backed Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Democratic primaries and contributed early on to her campaign, which could work against her as a contender. She contributed $10,000 to Mr. Obama’s presidential political action committee in August, after his nomination was all but assured.

Gorelick would bring corporate experience to an Obama administration — in the same way Rahm Emanuel did.  Gorelick was vice chairman at Fannie Mae in the years when the GSE fraudulently reported its income.  She got a Friends of Angelo sweetheart mortgage for almost a million dollars in 2003, and is currently under investigation by the department she would run if nominated for AG.

But even without that taint of corruption, Gorelick would signal a return to incompetence and infighting.  Gorelick played a major role in keeping counterterrorist and law-enforcement agents from sharing information and “connecting the dots” before 9/11.  In a series of judgments at the DoD and at Justice during her tenure in the Clinton administration, Gorelick hamstrung our efforts to find and disarm terrorist infiltrators by discouraging any cooperation between intelligence and enforcement efforts by making “the wall” much more significant than Congress ever intended.

Gorelick wound up serving as a panelist on the 9/11 Commission, but she should have been served a subpoena instead.  Two memos from Clinton-appointed US Attorney Mary Jo White made this point crystal clear, as did an explanation from someone involved for years in the counterterrorist effort.  Gorelick imposed an unrealistic standard on intelligence gathering that led directly to the 9/11 attacks.  As AG, she would have even more power to reimpose those same limitations, and leave us just as blind as we were before those attacks.

Obama ran on “hope and change”, but if Gorelick is what he had in mind, then he sold the US a bill of goods.  It would make the second former GSE board member nominated to a high position in his administration, one who already has connections to Countrywide’s corruption and a federal probe into her actions.  Gorelick also has failed in developing policies and strategies to keep the nation secure.  She would be a disaster as AG, and if she really is on the short list, it shows how clueless Barack Obama is about the threats to this nation.

Looks like the Oministration may take FDRs goal of putting “a chicken in every pot” a bit further.

The problem with the subprime loans wasn’t borrower screening. It was that pesky obligation to repay it at all that brought things down. If that obligation is redistributed to the people who can afford to pay it, the problem disappears.

EconomicNeocon on November 10, 2008 at 9:49 AM

Since when did “change” get defined as “Clinton-era retread?”

She has experience just like Obama does – no experience when appointed, sudden experience a day later. Add to that the corruption involved and it’s a perfect fit.

Phoenician on November 10, 2008 at 9:51 AM

On one side, Obama’s “change” scares the crud out of me. But on the other side, if it’s just going to be more of the same a la the Clinton administration…even scarier.

Because we know how that all turned out.

JetBoy on November 10, 2008 at 9:52 AM

Obama ran on “hope and change”, but if Gorelick is what he had in mind, then he sold the US a bill of goods.

Is anyone truly surprised by this?

I mean, here at Hot Air?

DaveC on November 10, 2008 at 9:52 AM

Ok, this doesn’t make any sense.

Gorelick was vice chairman at Fannie Mae in the years when the GSE fraudulently reported its income.

Isn’t the general American public that voted him in going to care about this? Has America become that stupid? Or is it that Obama is either a complete idiot, or there is something else working in his mind that is unseen at this point.

Marine_Bio on November 10, 2008 at 9:53 AM

Do you think Obama will be able to hold back a declaration of surrender in the WOT until his inauguration?

How long will it be before the electorate notices? Or will they really care?

Yoop on November 10, 2008 at 9:56 AM

Surely there is enough dirt between her role in incinerating over 3,000 Americans AND her involvement in Fannie Mae that this isn’t true.

highhopes on November 10, 2008 at 9:57 AM

Unbelieveable that he would put the country in such peril after he has had his security briefing. Are they asking for an attack?

ldbgcoleman on November 10, 2008 at 9:58 AM

This would be such a mistake.

In 2012 the Dems will be moved out of office because of their overspending on domestic welfare programs, their insane budget cuts for our military and security programs and the changes that Gorelick’s will make that will most surely provide our enemies with a new way to infiltrate and attack us on our soil.

The Wall was a term used during the 9/11 hearings that Gorelick is responsible for and untimately brought about the weakness in intelligence (betweent the FBI and CIA) sharing that lead to 9/11.

Cody1991 on November 10, 2008 at 9:59 AM

will they get rid of the Patriot Act?

I’ve seen some fringe conservatives pointing out that now we have barack Obama enforcing the PA, which should worry us with his terrorist ties and in future we shouldn’t do such policies b/c one day somebody like Obama would take office and have that power. Idiotic line of thought, but what the paultards are pushing now.

Next thing you know they’ll close down Club Gitmo and bring the terrorists here for trial.

If this nomination comes to pass, the GOP better man up and raise some opposition. If they sit there and kiss her ass, then they deserve no mercy.

Generally I think that a new president should be given a great deal of leeway in staffing his administration, but if she’s nominated for AG this should be the first GOP filibuster. They should also be prepared to dump a truckload of dirt on her at the hearings, and repeatedly ask the question:

“Is this really what the American people voted for?”

Just how many chances is this woman going to get to screw us over before somebody stands up and says “enough, already!”? That Obama would even consider this dangerous moron for any job in his administration shows how utterly clueless he is.

Imagine a Jamie Gorelick with no talk radio and no sites like HotAir to go to.
Imagine a future terrorist attack with no talk radio and no sites like HotAir to go to.
Imagine the choice of information that would be flowing out of an Obama administration to a willing media that wants to do everything it can to ensure Obama succeeds.
Would a new wall even be necessary?
Should an attack occur,,, while Obama has near complete control over the flow of information,, would we even know who the real attackers were?? Would he not be free to point the finger in any direction of his choosing???
If the real attacker remains unknown to the people, no flag of surrender need be raised.

right2bright on November 10, 2008 at 10:13 AM

I think Gorelick has a good publicist or she owns a timeshare with Eric Lichtblau. I don’t think she has a snowball’s chance in hell of being AG. There are far too many qualified women (and I do think it will be a woman) including Janet Napolitano. Jennifer Granholm, Anne Milgram (current AG in New Jersey) who supported Obama early on. Gorelick’s primary black mark for serving in this Administration – sadly – is her longtime close personal association with Hillary Clinton. I just can’t see Obama putting such a Clinton loyalist in as AG.

rockmom on November 10, 2008 at 10:14 AM

Can someone explain to me why people (and I use that word very loosely) like Gorelick even NEED a mortgage when they were clearing $90 million + at Fannie Mae…Oh wait, I guess why pay for a house when you don’t have to. If this bitch gets rewarded with the AG position after the damage she has done to our country, I may seriously consider moving out of the US. I just really don’t know what else to do.

bill30097 on November 10, 2008 at 10:16 AM

Although difficult to do, forget for a moment the heartbreaking loss of life among our fellow citizens on 9/11 and consider the cost: Maybe a trillion dollars. And who was at least partially to blame for that infamous day? Ms. Gorelick and her “wall”.

Now we have the Fannie Mae fiasco. Again, who was right in the middle of this fiasco? Ms.Gorelick. The cost this time around? Another trillion.

Can we afford to keep this woman in “public service”? Cheaper to simply give her another twenty-five million and ask her to go buy and inhabit an island somewhere.

Imagine, the biggest financial disaster ever, and GWB puts all the people that were on the boards of these companies that caused the disaster, in his cabinet. And yet the only thing you here from the msm is the sound of air blowing through there collective empty heads. He will follow the Clinton footsteps and fire all the Fed Prosecutors, in order to slow down or stop all of the anti dem cases such as ACORN and the probes into Fannie/Freddie and the “Friends of Angelo” loans.

Those positions changing, and the needed time to replace those Attorneys, will give them time for the tame Media to forget those stories as “old news”.

I suspect Gorelick isn’t going to get the nomination because of all her baggage and the public outrage her nomination would cause but……

Has the Bush record in staffing the AG slot been all that stellar? The DOJ essentially gave Sandy Berger a pass for stealing and destroying classified documents, gave an opportunistic partisan hack free reign to conduct a witch hunt on Bush staffers despite already having the answer to the scope of his investigation, and prosecuted border guards for doing their jobs.

I say: bring it on! This would be an excellent opportunity for the minority members of the judiciary committee to question her at length about her “wall” policy and to point out the results. We need this kind of airing of the pathology of disaster.

Jamie Gorelick may have cost more American lives than Osama bin Laden. She is the personification of evil in its purest form. She should be charged with treason rather than be allowed to manipulate the laws of this country to drive us to our knees. Gorelick and Emanuel are both dedicated to the fall of United States in its present state. Obama LIED.

She would be a disaster as AG, and if she really is on the short list, it shows how clueless Barack Obama is about the threats to this nation.

By appointing Gorelick as A.G. it is guaranteed that the D.O.J. will not investigate anyone connected with Fannie Me & Freddie Mac.

Which is why she will get the job.

They are circling the wagons around people like Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Maxine Waters, Franklin Raines, and yes, Jamie Gorelick. The Democrat Power base must be kept intact, by any means necessary. Thus one could argue that Obama is not clueless, but shrewd and dangerous.

But, yeah, The Mistress of Disaster is an absolute disgrace which seems to be what’s required to get leadership positions in the Dem Party.

And add to that they looked the other way while ACORN was up to their dirty tricks.

I think justice in America is all but dead. It’s become a huge Old Boys Network with a vast membership including both sides of the aisle.

Super. Looking at her list of accomplishments, I could see why she’d be considered.

Hopefully, the Republicans are ready to scream holy hell when these confirmation hearings start.
