The cult of personality continues

We’ve had Vero Possumus and the Barackopolis in the run-up to Barack Obama’s election.  Now we have people attempting to get a national holiday for Obama before he has even taken the oath of office.  Every Tuesday between now and the inauguration, a Topeka McDonald’s will host two rallies to demand an Obamoliday:

Plans are being made to promote a national holiday for Barack Obama, who will become the nation’s 44th president when he takes the oath of office Jan. 20.

“Yes We Can” planning rallies will be at 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. every Tuesday at the downtown McDonald’s restaurant, 1100 Kansas Ave., until Jan. 13. The goals are to secure a national holiday in Obama’s honor, to organize celebrations around his inauguration and to celebrate the 200th birthday of President Abraham Lincoln, who was born on Feb. 12 1809.

At 7:30 a.m. on Inauguration Day, Obama Cake will be served at the downtown McDonald’s, and a celebration is scheduled for 8 p.m. to midnight Jan. 20 at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center, 420 S.E. 6th.

First, we have a national holiday to honor our presidents.  It’s called — President’s Day.  One can see how this might confuse the national supporters of Hope and Change, but perhaps we can try to rename it into something easier for them to understand.

In our history, we have had only one national holiday for a specific president.  The birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln later got combined into Presidents Day, but only Washington’s Birthday was ever a federal holiday.  Washington’s Birthday was established as a national holiday in 1880, 83 years after Washington left office and 81 years after his death.  Lincoln’s birthday was celebrated by a number of states as a holiday, but never officially received recognition as such.  Congress specifically honored Lincoln in renaming Washington’s Birthday into President’s Day in 1971.

Think about the presidents that haven’t received this honor.  Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence and purchased the Louisiana Territory, starting the march to the Pacific.  Theodore Roosevelt made America a global power for the first time in our history.  Franklin Roosevelt defeated the Nazis and the Japanese Empire.  Ronald Reagan defeated the Soviet Union.  All of these men have their honor in Presidents Day.

And now the Cult of Obama wants a specific day to honor the object of their adoration, and for what?  Getting elected?  Isn’t that the soft bigotry of low expectations?

Jazz Shaw and Michelle have more thoughts on this.

But more to the point, is it silly to try and paint Obama as a “cult of personality” when 56% of the American people just selected him as president in one the nation’s most historic elections? Double yes.

Tom_Shipley on November 10, 2008 at 9:55 AM

Actually, he won 53%, not 56%. I guess he has added on an extra 3% in your mind in just a week.

I guess your 56% is okay. Within a year or so, he and the MSM will be telling us how he really won 99.9%.

DCJeff on November 10, 2008 at 10:07 AM

National holidays are usually reserved for those who have made notable achievements in life, such as Christopher Columbus, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln.

In the case of Obama, we’re still waiting.

Steve Z on November 10, 2008 at 10:07 AM

How about a day for our first morbidly obese president?
William Howard Taft (Maybe we could do this on Fat Tuesday during Mardi Gras)

How about a tribute to vertically challenged ultra light presidents by recognizing James Madison? (5′4″ & 100 lbs)

Just some ideas

People are inspired by Obama. He’s very popular. The VAST majority of people who support him do so in the promise that he’ll make a great president. And because he’s a man who can help transform people’s view the country because he has shown that a black man can be president. Also, because he’s guy who people think can bring this country together.

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/warner-todd-huston/2008/11/10/obama-spokesman-says-obama-ready-rule-day-1#comments

According to this link, Obama spokeswoman Valerie Jarett says that Obama will be “ready to rule from day one”.

RULE??? A President is not supposed to “rule” like a king or dictator, but GOVERN with the consent of the governed and Congress.

There are lots of rumors out there about plans for Executive Orders from President-Elect Obama. What does he have planned for us? He never talked about Executive Orders during his campaign–wonder why not?

Obama complained during his campaign that most Americans don’t speak foreign languages, and only know “Merci beaucoup”. If Obama intends to “rule” by “executive order”, the American military might need to teach him some French:
“Coup d’Etat!!!”

This idiot is REALLY out of control!!!

vcferlita on November 10, 2008 at 10:22 AM

Uh… No.

The federal holiday is still officially named Washington’s Birthday.

Nixon signed a proclamation calling it Presidents Day, but it’s not federal law. The law passed by Congress and still on the books names the holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February Washington’s Birthday.

I personally think MLK day should be renamed to something like “civil rights” day. I believe the advance of civil rights owes as much to the Buffalo soldiers, the Tuskegee Airmen, and even Jackie Robinson as it does to MLK.

We really should not have holidays dedicated to individuals.

Oh jeez, I got a number wrong in my head and admitted it. There was no nefarious inflating going on.

But my point remains the same. The entire election, you guys constantly hammered Obama, trying make his associations with Wright and Ayers into proof he’s a dangerous radical. Thankfully, the country saw through that BS.

Now that President Bush has called his election “awesome” and more reasonable conservatives and looking inward and hoping for the best from an Obama presidency, you guys are still stuck in attack mode… and not even over anything of substance. You just attack Obama because you really don’t know what else to do. You have nothing else to offer. Enjoy your time in the wilderness.

I have not witnessed such division in my whole lifetime. People who have never been what I would call “racist” are talking differently now. It’s not about race, but the whole socialism vs. capitalism thing. The attitude seems to be, why not just be Europe then? Free Markets are what makes America unique and soon the public will see that it is NOT what caused this economic mess. THAT WAS THE DEMS WITH THE WHOLE FANNIE/FREDDIE ALLIANCE.

Obama [is] prepared to take power and rule on day one…

President-Elect Obama has chosen, rather than take the “outdated” Oath of Office, to receive the Congressional Mace from Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid. The Mace will now reside in the Oval Office. The Mainstream media has been nearly unanimous in praising the symbolic move of all power to the Oval Office. Chris Matthews, speaking for his colleagues, said “It’s high time, at this important point in history, for all [A]mericans to pay fealty to this brilliant man as opposed to simply the Office of the Presidency..,”

grdred944 on November 10, 2008 at 11:37 AM

One more thing: this myth of BHO’s “cool” and “steadiness”. Look, it’s easy to be cool and steady when the MSM is doing all of your flacking. Obama could afford to just ride the wave of media interference and look good doing it. But, recall if you will two occasions on which there was no MSM to defend him. First was when George “Steffy” Stephanopolous asked him about Ayers in the primary debate. Barry froze and then got indignant. he hemmed, hawed, stammered and engaged in recrimination. Not cool and steady. Then on O’Reilly’s interview. Barry was animated and seemingly nonplussed by O’Reilley’s dismissal of his answers. His body language was as smooth as that ghoul from The Grudge. He constantly was on the edge of his seat, reaching for O’Reilly’s sleeve, seeking to cajole him into agreement. Not cool. Not steady. Besides, if Barry’s cool, so is Steve Irkel.

ToddonCapeCod on November 10, 2008 at 12:02 PM

For some people, like this restaurant’s owners, Michelle Obama, and Maya Angelou, Obama’s victory seems to be a defining moment in American history. Several folks have said “after Obama’s victory, America is a great country.”

So I guess America wasn’t great when:
A black man won a major party’s presidential primary.
A black man got on the primary ballot
A black man was elected to Senate
A black man was elected Governor
A black man was elected to the Supreme Court (a lifetime appointment, that).

Martin Luther King is probably crying. America’s greatness lies in the HOPE that anyone can CHANGE their lives for the better. The PROMISE that all men are created equal. The election of a particular individual neither affirms nor denys that greatness.

Watch for the following in the media who had the temerity to ask The One questions (once or twice):

He is a man who overcame every impediment imaginable to enter office.

A prep school that he slaved in while in Hawaii, a racist white grandmother, colleges who graded him harshly and favored whites in admissions and tutoring and classes, a political machine that hated him, a political party that rejected him — not to mention an adversarial party (Repubs) who did everything to destroy him including being thrilled that he was alive and running.

And now he enters office with more problems than anyone ever had, anytime!

Plans are being made to promote a national holiday for Barack Obama, who will become the nation’s 44th president when he takes the oath of office Jan. 20.

Washington, the founding father President of America, did not get a national holiday, which has since been taken away, until many years after he had died. Washington, who could have become King, told his supporters that he did not want to be King, that America should have a President and not a King. Maybe it is about time for Obama to tell his more whack job fervent supporters that he wants to be their President and not their King or Messiah.

Cult? No. Holiday? You would think, since holidays are usually created to honor the lives of great individuals who have actually accomplished something while in the service of this country or its people.

I bet the peeps who meet at Mickey D’s to plan this holiday are the same type that vehemently opposed the placement of a statue honoring a fallen Navy SEAL at a park.

They probably also have an unnatural affinity for cats.

Just sayin’.

While we can rarely predict that future with any degree of certainty, there is one prediction I feel safe in making. By April of 2009, all this adulation of Obama will be regarded as freakish by a large majority of the population–even on the off chance he’s not unpopular by then.

thuja on November 10, 2008 at 2:53 PM

In the case of Obama, we’re still waiting.

Steve Z on November 10, 2008 at 10:07 AM

You also need to be dead first…..

LimeyGeek on November 10, 2008 at 10:12 AM

…as the man said…we’re waiting….

I do not wish the man ill…my disagreements with him stop at matters of policy, tradition and simple common sense…but he’s not exactly rushing to quash these worshipful excesses, n’cest pas?

Puritan1648 on November 10, 2008 at 3:36 PM

This is so nationalistic it’s frightening. Did any of you ever see, “The Triumph of the Will”? I’m not comparing Obama to Hitler in terms of policy, but whenever a country is this enamored of its leader to this extent, we all should be frightened. We already have happy propagandists, (useful idiots) at MSNBC – people willing to hide the truth for him.

foxforce91 on November 10, 2008 at 3:41 PM

And now the Cult of Obama wants a specific day to honor the object of their adoration, and for what? Getting elected? Isn’t that the soft bigotry of low expectations?

Obama did what all of his cultists wanted him to do – get elected and beat “the man.” I think many of them are surprised to learn that now he has to govern the country and be “the man.”

This is an insult to the cats of America. I know, my cat told me this morning.

Sweetness0726 on November 10, 2008 at 2:23 PM

Dogs drool, Cats rule.

FeralCat on November 10, 2008 at 3:43 PM

It’s funny. On one level, Obama supporters seem to have frightfully low expectations for the guy. And rightly so, considering the fact that he’s given them so little of a concrete idea as to what his administration plans to do. On the other hand, they expect him to change the world and fulfill their every want and need.

Should we paint his mug on the flag while we’re at it?

Sign of the Dollar on November 10, 2008 at 3:47 PM

Hey man, there’s no sense in doing it now, but can you blame the community for seeing this as a once in a generation event? I mean, even if it was Alan Keyes, people would still be like “woow…a black president…we need to commemorate this forever”

ernesto on November 10, 2008 at 9:11 AM

Nah. If it were Alan Keyes we’d see stories about how the NAACP has declared that President Keyes is no longer black, and there’d be jokers at the Daily Kos suggesting he should be lynched.

Sign of the Dollar on November 10, 2008 at 3:52 PM

Then our nation’s capital will be renamed Obama City.

Wrong! It won’t be called Obama City. It will be Obamagrad.

Ampleforth on November 10, 2008 at 4:08 PM

Think about the presidents that haven’t received this honor. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence and purchased the Louisiana Territory, starting the march to the Pacific. Theodore Roosevelt made America a global power for the first time in our history. Franklin Roosevelt defeated the Nazis and the Japanese Empire. Ronald Reagan defeated the Soviet Union. All of these men have their honor in Presidents Day.

But Ed… This is BARACK OBAMA! He once… well he’s great at… Chicago couldn’t have survived without…

Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated. Obama or die!

BKennedy on November 10, 2008 at 4:16 PM

We are the Obamanation…say it fast, you’ll like it.

Wyznowski on November 10, 2008 at 4:21 PM

Hay A$$ wipe I’m one of those CAT people!

driver on November 10, 2008 at 4:45 PM

People are inspired by Obama. He’s very popular. The VAST majority of people who support him do so in the promise that he’ll make a great president. And because he’s a man who can help transform people’s view the country because he has shown that a black man can be president. Also, because he’s guy who people think can bring this country together.

Tom_Shipley on November 10, 2008 at 9:55 AM

.

Focus with me here. We were promised that when Obama was President we would never have to work again – unless we are rich and I’m not. This holiday thing – in order to have one – one would have to have a job. So is it just another ski vacation for the rich? Because the rest of us aren’t going to be partying much on that pittance check we’ll be getting from Uncle Sam.
.
I’m against it, personally – unless there is cake. *checking article* oh Hey! Ask and ye shall recieve. There will be cake.
.
If you don’t have to make sense, Tom, then neither do I.
