Newt for RNC chair?

In the wake of its second straight defeat in national elections, the Republican Party needs leadership that can lead it out of the political wilderness.  They may want to look at the last man to accomplish that for the GOP.  The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Newt Gingrich might agree to chair the RNC as the party tries to retool for the Obama administration:

Newt Gingrich has let it be known that, if Republicans want him, the former U.S House speaker is willing to serve as chairman of the national party and lead it out of the wilderness it’s blundered into.

The question is whether the 168-member Republican National Committee is open to the match.

“If a majority of the RNC thought he was needed, he would accept that appointment,” said Randy Evans’ Gingrich’s close friend and legal counsel. “He fully appreciates the urgency of the moment.”

Some wanted Gingrich to run for President in 2008, but this role would suit him much better.  Gingrich has operated best as a philosopher for the conservative movement, someone who can both capture the essence of conservatism and put it into action.  Gingrich has the skill to communicate to a national audience and an emeritus status that will have people paying attention when he speaks.  As RNC chair, his political baggage becomes irrelevant, allowing him to focus on party- and agenda-building instead of running for office.

Most importantly, Gingrich understands the technological tools that escaped the GOP in 2008.  American Solutions has established a very impressive grassroots structure for policy, which could easily be adopted and adapted to the RNC.  As Patrick Ruffini has been arguing at Rebuild the Party, the RNC needs to close the technology gap with the DNC in a hurry.  Gingrich could get the GOP to a terrific start in doing just that.

Selecting Gingrich would also underscore the priority for the party in the next two years.  People have already begun talking about 2012, but we have another national election in two years.  Unlike this year, Democrats will not have an overwhelming advantage in the Senate races, and they will have to defend the first two years of undivided government.  If the Republicans can organize quickly, use a grassroots technological structure to identify and support candidates, and develop the successor to the Contract with America that can unite the disparate factions of conservatism around a few core principles and support candidates who will stick to them, Republicans might compete in 2010 and get control of one chamber of Congress — or at least cut significantly into Democratic majorities.

The RNC needs to find a man who has a track record of doing all of the above.  Newt Gingrich certainly fills that bill — if he’ll take it.

Newt is the father of the “Contract With America” takeover of Congress in ‘94, and one of the strongest minds in Conservatism. Any help we can get from him would be welcome!

creatocon on November 10, 2008 at 11:53 AM

I like the idea of him being the chair. His Contract got the ‘pubs their majority way back when (you know before the started spending like drunken sailors and misplaced their collective spines).

What I DON’T like about giving him an official national position is his misguided stance on global warming.

Darksean on November 10, 2008 at 11:54 AM

RBMN on November 10, 2008 at 11:56 AM

I think that it is a good idea… Gingrich is definitely an ideas guy and a political groundwork guy, but he is an awful candidate and allowed himself to be villifed by the Clintons. The RNC would be a lower key post where Gingrich would not be able to be smeared effectively (like I Have a Scream! Dean)

Illinidiva on November 10, 2008 at 11:56 AM

He is one of the still existing pillars of conservatism.
I can just hear the screeching from the left…reaching back in hope to capture Reagan’s legacy…not understanding (or fearing_ that Reagan’s legacy is America’s future…

right2bright on November 10, 2008 at 11:56 AM

Newt should follow the lead of Howard Dean:

Disappear from view and get to work creatively and relentlessly rebuilding the party.

Newt should be gone from TV and roll up his sleeves.

He’d be perfect for the gig in bringing the Republicans back home and into the 21st century.

Can he keep his ego out of the press?

He also has a buttprint on the sofa, right next to Pelosi’s.

Gingrich is a bad choice.

fourstringfuror on November 10, 2008 at 11:59 AM

Better check with George Will, Noonan, Parker, and Buckley on this since they determine proper credentials for all things conservative.

What the hell. Newt it is.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on November 10, 2008 at 12:00 PM

Newt could be a good choice, as would Steele too. I would have some interest in Fred!, but I do not seem him as a tactician or someone to come up with strategies, however more as someone to effectively articulate the ideas of smaller goverment in our lives.

I got one question. who is the chair for the DEM and who is the chair for the RNC. I know Dean is the dem’s chair but does anyone know who is the chair for the GOP?

Just the fact that the RNC chair is an unknown tells you volumes. I am pretty current on the news, I read blogs, newspappers, listen to talk radio on and off and watch some of the TV news programs and I am sitting here wondering who the hell is the RNC chair at the present time. Does that not scream at you of a problem?

unseen on November 10, 2008 at 12:04 PM

YES to Newt, as a matter of fact, WHAT THE HELL ARE WE WAITING FOR! Sign him up and turn him loose NOW! Do not wait, move fast, get plans and people on the GROUND in key States for 2010… We need Congress back and FAST, let Newt get real Conservatives with a REAL message of hard nosed Conservative values, money policies, but get going NOW! We are getting beat at EVERY TURN by piss-poor managment! Hire Newt and start TALKING about Conservatisiam, get media coverage showing the differences in Obama’s plans and what we would seek to “change”… Counter EVERY single position that Obama takes with OUR CONSERVATIVE alternative, give people reasons to doubt Obama’s way, give people “nuts and bolts” and Newt already has many along with the Herritage Foundation… Get going RNC, your a total failure at this point, do something right for once…

Obamalama Deprogrammer on November 10, 2008 at 12:06 PM

I support Newt for RNC Chair.

Those worried about his belief in human-caused global warming should read this, from his website:

Many of you have written to me to ask why I recently taped an advertisement with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for The Alliance for Climate Protection, a group founded by former Vice President Al Gore.

I completely understand why many of you would have questions about this, so I want to take this opportunity to explain my reasons. First of all, I want to be clear: I don’t think that we have conclusive proof of global warming. And I don’t think we have conclusive proof that humans are at the center of it.

But here’s what we do know. There is an important debate going on right now over the right energy policy, the right environmental policy, and making sure we do the right things for our future and the future of our children and grandchildren. Conservatives are missing from this debate, and I think that’s a mistake. When it comes to preserving our environment for future generations, we can’t have a slogan of “Just yell no!”

I have a different view. I think it’s important to be on the stage, to engage in the debate, and to communicate our position clearly. There is a big difference between left-wing environmentalism that wants higher taxes, bigger government., more bureaucracy, more regulation, more red tape, and more litigation and a Green Conservatism that wants to use science, technology, innovation, entrepreneurs, and prizes to find a way to creatively invent the kind of environmental future we all want to live in. Unless we start making the case for the latter, we’re going to get the former. That’s why I took part in the ad.

Thank you for reading and visiting Newt.org

No way, Newt failed in regards to standing up to the Global warming hysteria, that debate with Gore made Newt look like he wimp. The conservatives need a fresh voice not a kowtow before Pelosi.

Tobias2012 on November 10, 2008 at 12:06 PM

He has my vote. Go Newt!

bopbottle on November 10, 2008 at 12:06 PM

Could they do better, perhaps. They certainly could do a lot worse. Hopefully Newt or whomever will stress fiscal responsibility and small government bias. You might think this would be a given but even Newt forgot the message within five years.

Plus its not enough to press these two core issues. There needs to be an education component, explaining to the electorate that while big social government feels good why at it heart it kills. Without a clear educational component the Repubs will just sound like retreads promising to do better next time. With this education stressed over the next eight years we may have a second chance. Then when the real battle starts over entitlements a large part of the electorate will understand the challenges and cod liver oil we will be drinking by the quart.

patrick neid on November 10, 2008 at 12:07 PM

No we need a REAL Conservative not this academic phoney. He is great on talk and rotten on action. He talks the talk but does not walk the walk. Newt got co-opted by the DC crowd sad to say. After sitting on that couch with the witch Pelosi he should be persona non grata. We need to ask Sarah who she wants and back that person.

bill30097 on November 10, 2008 at 12:08 PM

I want Newt’s ideas, but a different face. Republicans need to quit reviving the legends of the past and work on creating the new face of the future.
I think it is important for the Republicans to put a new, fresh face on the conservative to help break the stereotype image that has been ingrained into the psyche of Americans of the party of angry old white guys.
For awhile it may not hurt to have somebody like Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) or Michael Steele or look to one of the Republican candidates that ran for office this year but didn’t make it like Alan West in FL or Deborah Honeycutt from GA.
Let’s put a fresh face on the old principles with 21st century solutions.

Kini on November 10, 2008 at 12:08 PM

I dunno the problem with the RNC is that it is too much of a “good ol boy” network. The RNC kept sending candidates to groups like BMWdirect and Responce America two insider GOP groups that are better at draining GOP candidates than winning elections.

The GOP needs to throughly clean house. Giving it to a Washington insider who has connections to these groups is a grave mistake.

Id much rather see a fresh face in there with no commections to bad GOP groups.

I just love that video of him smacking down some MSNBC reporter at the convention on whether Sarah Palin is quaified or not. As for whether Newt would be a good choice for the RNC chair, he can fire out our philosophy and corner the enemy, he’s a strategist and knows what the job entails, and he took on the Clinton administration. He knows the vulnerabilities of the has-beens in Obama’s administration. Newt is the man for the job.

Too much Obama and Republican memos – dig into the financial crisis – there is more going on than meets the eye.
Where is all this money going to?
Who benefited by all this?
Who really started it? (Did you know who the top honchos at Merril Lynch are? A man from Turkey and a man from Egypt. Who one of the biggest share holders in CitiBank – Saudis. More, more more to find.)
The entire world financial system collapses because a bunch of low income Americans can’t make their house payments?

If he has a good number 2 who can effectively carry out his policy I am all for it. Newt deserves a lot of credit for the gains the GOP had in the 90’s and if Obama is going to reestablish the Clinton administration then why not have a Contract With America Part Two?

I like Newt on most things non-global warming, but it’s time to wipe the Republican slate clean. All new, all young, all conservative.

Newt is green, where green is $green$. It’s a lot easier and more successful to deflect the charging bull away from you than to stop it dead. And if the bull’s going to run, push it run toward energy independence and not toward artificial shortage of energy.

Sorry but Newt seems to have sipped a bit too much of the leftist swill i.e. sitting on a couch spewing global warming propaganda with Nazi Nancy Pelosi, the Sphincter of the House and supporting the Shamnesty Bill then coming somewhat to his senses. Sorry again but Newt is damagfed goods.
Why can’t an actually Conservative who seems to REFUSE to toss away his conservative beliefs, oh, maybe Jeff Sessions, be R.N.C. Chairman or is the R.N.C. committed on losing more elections with frauds leading them and Conservatives staying home or voting for nutbags like Ron Paul, Bob Barr and Chuck Baldwin?

Yes to Newt! Regardless position on Global Warming, he is a fiscal conservative and a fighter!

beththebaker on November 10, 2008 at 12:40 PM

Does Mr. Warming have a new girlfriend yet?

Feedie on November 10, 2008 at 12:41 PM

Could it be split so Newt is the talking head to the public with a real conservative actually in charge who approves what Newt says so he doesn’t go off the conservative line like he sometimes does?

bill30097 on November 10, 2008 at 12:41 PM

Wasn’t Newt involved with the founding of the K Street project? Has he learned anything?

Obama is recycling the Clinton administration. Let’s not follow suit and bring back something else from the 90s. I’d rather live with further defeat than sell my soul twice to the same devil.

Newt would be great. I wrote about Rebuild the Party here, here & here. Newt would be the person to yank the GOP into the 21st Century technologically.

LFRGary on November 10, 2008 at 12:44 PM

Newt is great for RNC chair. He is personable, intelligent, and creative. He will definitely be an asset and vital for the republican party.
With Michael Steele, I know he is a great conservative and can reach out to minorities. At least he does not believe in that global warming or climate change crap.
Either of these two will be a huge step forward for the party.

(Just kidding. Sort of.)
