Happy anniversary to the Marine Corps
posted at 5:30 pm on November 10, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
They have served our nation since before its birth, and strike fear into the hearts of our enemies around the world. The United States Marine Corps celebrates its 233rd anniversary today, and to give our thanks, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir sings their hymn:
Like many Americans, members of our family have served in the Corps. The First Mate’s father, Paul Flesch, fought in World War II and Korea as a Marine fighter pilot. He saw action in both wars and remained proud of his Corps until his last day — ironically, on the day that we called a cease-fire in Iraq in 1991, a move he predicted would eventually require a second US invasion. I wish I’d gotten a chance to know him better. My uncle Hal also served in wartime, in Vietnam. Like my father-in-law, he rarely speaks about his combat experiences, but he’s another of the fine men of the Marine Corps.
Happy anniversary, Marines. For those who have already served their country, and those who serve it now, thank you so much. (Thanks to Michelle for the reminder.)

In honor of its birthday, the Corps asked Retired Lt. General Ron Christmas to describe what it means to become a Marine. In a video posted on the Marine Corps website, Lt. Gen. Christmas explains, “What really happens, you know, when you get called ‘Marine’ for the first time, two invisible hands reach up and rip your chest cavity open. Another invisible set of hands with a singe and iron singes a globe and anchor in your heart. The same invisible hands close up your chest cavity, and you’re simply never the same again.”
I’m going out to MCRD-San Diego in two weeks to watch my oldest son graduate from Marines boot camp. He’ll be allowed to call himself a Marine for the first time. I’m so proud I can hardly stand it. Oorah!! Happy Birthday, Marines!

Thank you, and Happy Birthday Marine Corps!
I’m sorry you didn’t get a chance to get to know him better, Ed. I’ve been spending as much time as possible getting to know my still living, 83 year-old grandfather better since moving back to VT a couple of years ago. He too was a Marine in WWII, serving on the USS Vella Gulf CVE-111 , which played a role in the initial occupation of Japan, although my grandfather remembers things a bit differently than accounts I’ve read online.
Now, as of a couple weeks ago, my cousin (an Army man) entered Baghdad, and I’m praying for him more and more as attacks have seemed to increase over the past few days… I can only hope it’s a hiccup, rather than a reaction to our election results.

I was riding a train to San Diego with my under 8 kids. 6 hard core marines behind us, started in with the four letter words, after a few minutes of this verbal abuse, I turned around and asked the guys to tone it down, my wife and kids and all…silence, one of the men got up got on his knees and apologized to my son and my wife then my youngest daughter then to me, just stating they got out of basic and was out of civilization and what they said and how they acted was wrong…with all the sincerity a man could possible muster. The rest of the trip was made in quite respect.
I got off the train, thanked them, each one apologized again…I went to the newspaper stand, and the front headlines were, Beirut barracks bombing, I cried. Honorable young men, brothers of the men I just encountered. I have never forgotten what kind of men Marines are…and to this day my kids remember what respect is, they remember the Marines apologizing…you don’t need to go to war for a Marine to make an impact.

The Marine Corps was established in Tun Tavern, Philadelphia on November 10th, 1776.
This is our 233rd Birthday; the only continuous Military Service in the United States, since Independence.
The Army and Navy were disestablished by Acts of Congress for short periods, the Marine Corps never was.
I served briefly, for 12 years; in a fairly undistinguished “career”.
But I wish my fellow Marines, all around the world, currently in harms way, God Bless and thank you for keeping us safe, and Semper Fidelis.
For those unlucky enough to have served with me, Thank You and Semper Fidelis as well.
Faithfully,

I never ceased to enjoy reviewing our men and women in uniform and hope I started a new tradition for presidents. As commander in chief, I discovered it was customary for our uniformed men and women to salute whenever they saw me. When I’d walk down the steps of a helicopter, for example, there was always a marine waiting there to salute me. I was told presidents weren’t supposed to return salutes, so I didn’t, but this made me feel a little uncomfortable. Normally, a person offering a salute waits until it is returned, then brings down his hand. Sometimes, I realized, the soldier, sailor, marine, or airman giving me a salute wasn’t sure when he was supposed to lower his hand. Initially, I nodded and smiled and said hello and thought maybe that would bring down the hand, but usually it didn’t. Finally, one night when Nancy and I were attending a concert at the Marine Corps headquarters, I told the commandant of marines, “I know it’s customary for the president to receive these salutes, but I was once an officer and realize that you’re not supposed to salute when you’re in civilian clothes. I think there ought to be a regulation that the president could return a salute inasmuch as he is commander in chief and civilian clothes are his uniform.” “Well, if you did return a salute,” the general said, “I don’t think anyone would say anything to you about it.”
The next time I got a salute, I saluted back. A big grin came over the marine’s face and down came his hand. From then on, I always returned salutes. When George Bush followed me into the White House, I encouraged him to keep up the tradition.
