Greta on the Palin smears: Carl Cameron told me, “I messed up on this one”

Seven minutes on the difference between news and gossipy “schoolyard trash.” Cameron’s excuse, at least as explained by Greta, is absurd. She makes it sound like all he was trying to say was that there was sniping between the McCain and Palin factions and the Africa/NAFTA detail was merely illustrative. Go watch the clips — both of them, lest you miss his excited “Great doubts!” exclamation to O’Reilly — and judge for yourself how plausible that is. If all he was doing was offering a few examples, how come there wasn’t any dirt flung at McCain? Or is that because Palin’s allies refused to stoop to that?
Note that O’Reilly claims Cameron’s sources were eyewitnesses to everything he reported, not mere conduits. For the record, Steve Schmidt adamantly denies being a leaker. Exit quotation: “You know, I was a critic of her nomination, but everybody is entitled to some basic fairness…” Click the image to listen.

Sure O’Reilly’s an opportunist. But, as you point out, so is Greta. She decided to stake out the “Palin defender” territory for whatever reason and will now be rewarded for it in the ratings (at O’Reilly’s expense to boot).
Nothing wrong with that btw, as long as we in the audience keep it in mind. Greta scored similarly with her attachment to the Natalee Holloway story.

Matt Lauer is in Alaska now for an interview with Palin that will air tomorrow and Wednesday.

Treacher’s post on Cameron as Wonderwoman is very funny, and most appropriate, for those who haven’t seen it.
james23 on November 10, 2008 at 3:01 PM
I also no longer watch FNC haven’t for weeks, except Greta, who before I never bothered to watch. Greta has been the only one above all the BS. Wonder how FNC ratings will be? How does someone go about getting their reputation back, if you are a Republican. Dem’s don’t count it just improves their resume.
calgrammy on November 10, 2008 at 3:02 PM
Sounds like the ‘Cuda’s sitting down with Matt Lauer. I’m rather wary of this. I know she needs to talk to MSM, but I don’t like her talking to all these guys right after the campaign when all they want to do is rehash everything. I hope she ignores his campaign questions and pivots to energy and Alaska. Take him up to ANWR and leave him there Sarah! This news also makes me think that she’ll probably accept those offers from Oprah and Baba Wawa. Sigh.
meltenn on November 10, 2008 at 3:03 PM
Greta can help Palin with these smears by allowing Palin an opportunity to show her true intelligent self.
And also, I agree with the post that said that McCain is really doing Palin a favor by not scolding the media. She can handle it herself.
But who the hell knows what he will say on Jay Leno? Any teaser clips out?

Hasn’t Palin and her handlers learned anything lessons from the campaign? Shouldn’t Laura Ingraham or Hugh Hewitt get an interview before Matt (I used to co-anchor with Couric) Lauer?

The fact that Carl Cameron looked like a giddy school girl when he uploaded his gossip to the increasingly annoying Bill O’Reilly was my first clue. The second was that this was an “exclusive” on Bill O’Reilly, Fox’s Entertainment Television Wannabe. His show has become a thorn in my side with his weekly chats with Geraldo and his bloated image of himself as a “crusader”. The two made my bullsh*t meter go off the charts.
I hope the ‘Cuda unleashes on the McCain campaign and McCain himself and exposes him for the democrat operative that he is.
HornetSting on November 10, 2008 at 3:06 PM
Carl Cameron lost any respect I had for him back in the primaries when he trashed Fred at every opportunity. Fox is slightly better than the rest of the MSM, but they are NOT conservative. And the Obamamania at Fox since election night makes me want to wretch. Have they forgotten who their viewer base is? Do they really believe the lefties will start watching them if they praise The One? We really do need a station that is not afraid to show the conservative side in all of its glory. If Fox ever mentioned Obama’s membership in the American socialist party, then I never saw it. I am feeling so hopeless about the media. We MUST find a true voice in TV land. So many still get the majority of their info from television.

Yes, we are all “opportunists.” We grab (hopefully) onto opportunities as they present themselves.
But there is a difference taking advantage in an opportunity and in opportunism. I haven’t seen either interview, but knowing O’Rielly (although I do like him) he is not opposed to sensationalism and “opportunity” to boost his ratings. But, that is OK with me–it’s his show, and it’s his livelyhood.
davidk on November 10, 2008 at 3:09 PM
I’m thinking Sarah’cuda will do just fine. She doesn’t have to “be careful” now and can be her disarmingly deadly self.
davidk on November 10, 2008 at 3:12 PM
No not the same , Greta is pragmatic , O’reilly an opportunist trying to provoke Palin to show up by smearing her.
As news have become entertainment, and entertainment sells commercials, Palin can reward the journalisst who wants to be straight by showing up, as it drives viewers/money to them .
And if “both sides” are equally evil , why not just kill for the ones on your side.

I have a new found respect for Greta. I felt that she was democrat leaning, but she seems to be the sole voice of reason on Fox News. Hannity is still babbling about Wright and the associations….I look forward to the interview. I hope that Greta is fair and ‘Cuda will be fabulous.

THANK YOU! An honest comment from a Fox news viewer, allow me to extract my lower jaw from the floor. These people are HACKS! and I’m sort of horrified when I read conservatives claiming that the hacks on Fox news are somehow less hacky than the hacks on MSNBC or CNN. Great Van Sustern sold her soul to Fox news years ago when she felt it would make her a quick buck and she’s been hacking her way through RNC talking points ever since.
And Bill O’Reilly. Good. Fricking. God. I just…I have no words for the man. He constantly lies. Just..all the time. And then when he’s called on lies he does the best impersonation of a temper tantrum throwing 10 year old that I’ve ever seen. How do people confuse that with “toughness.” It’s “tough” to scream at the top of your lungs or talk and interrupt people? How is that anything but complete idiodicy. I don’t care what I have to do. If I have to watch *retch* Keith Olbermann. If I have to watch *barf* Campbell Brown. If I have to support every single show thats on opposite Bill O’Reilly I will do it. The man is a total cancer.
Though this puts me in the awkward position of liking Sarah Palin for exposing Bill O as a hack to conservative. Well, better the devil you know than the pompous asshole who makes the world suck more every second he’s on screen in it.
DeathToMediaHacks on November 10, 2008 at 3:31 PM
I understand that people want to praise Greta Van Susteren because she’s currently taken the popular position on Sarah Palin, but please keep in mind that she’s also the one who pushed the Natalee Holloway story to the point of absurdity. Oh and she’s a Scientologist because she’s a “strong advocate of their ethics.”
Not trying to trash Van Susteren, but it might be prudent to retain some perspective. With all infotainment hosts.

You have to admit, McCain kept on the Joe the Plumber meme for WAY too long. At the end of the campaign, I wanted to see Joe the Plumber fed to lions. McCain suffered from not knowing when to let go of things. Throughout the campaign, he repeated the SAME effing lines a million times, even to the point where the news would finish his lines for him and comment about hearing it a dozen times already. He kept calling himself a maverick a MILLION times. Joe the plumber should have been a week long thing, it lasted for WEEKS.

I used to think Hannity was too clever by half, but he might be the only one on that network who actually believes the stuff that comes out of his mouth anymore. And so that makes me feel pretty sorry for the man right now. He honestly can’t fathom a world where Obama has been elected. He doesn’t seem mad, just horribly, horribly bewildered.

I am just tired of the mantra, Obama Mania Media. It is the truth, but if you watch him and listen to him, day in and day out, it gets a bit tiring.
I don’t bash Fox. I believe they are truly fair and balanced and that is also well documented.
It’s just been a long election season. Glad it’s over and now that Obama is dear leader, we can start the Conservative Revolution and eradicate the democratic sympathizers from the party.
HornetSting on November 10, 2008 at 3:39 PM
You know O’Rielly is really starting to irritate me, and it is primarily because his ego prevents him from admitting when he is wrong. He knew what Cameron reported was pure gossip but he wont admit it because to do so would be an admission that he made an error in judgment in running with the storey in the first place. The same thing happened with the Obama interview where he was rolled by the one and then spent the next week fishing for compliments from everyone about how tough he was in the interview. Its part of the reason why he spent the next two months sucking up to Obama to try and get another interview.

I’d bet my next paycheck it was a setup. SO PROUD of Sarah for not falling for it. And really, I’m grateful to O’Reilly, Cameron, and Fox News. I believe this campaign backbiting is GOOD for Palin. It separates her from a BAD campaign and a HORRIBLE candidate.
Palin was gagged and made to toe the McCain line and the McCain beliefs. He couldn’t have her going out there and arguing for conservative values and ideals. It would have outed McCain for what he really is.
Now that the campaign operatives are pounding on her, she has an out. She can say that they made her say the things she said and do the things she did without looking like she is bitter about losing. She can fight back and explain her real values and her ideals for a platform for 2012.
The campaign gave her a gift without even knowing it. She will be able to distance herself from the albatross that is John McCain.

And by the way, I like Hot Air, the commenters *and* Palin. But this Palin worship is just off the wall.
The McCain campaign is just showing it’s true colors now. He’s a jackass and a lib. The verdict’s not really in on Palin. We know she’s tough and authentic, but that’s about all we know. I love watching her speak and she’s taken a lot of crap. I would trust her to lead. But because the national vetting of her was more personal than anything else, and because she was hamstrung by the McCain folks, we don’t know a whole lot about her actual politics other than the stuff I mentioned, and that she was a very popular governor. The woman instituted a windfall profits tax, and that’s always bothered me. Populism only goes so far.
Nominating Palin in ‘12 would probably be electoral death even though a lot of us hardcore Rethugs would vote for her. I hope Jindal is up for this.

O’Reilly likes to hear himself talk. Sometimes he does give a liberal a well-deserved trashing on TV (Bawney Fwank was a good example), but he has drifted left this year, and seems to be clueless on economic issues.
During the summer he kept bashing oil companies for the high gasoline prices, then complained that when oil prices came down, gasoline prices didn’t decrease proportionately. Any idiot who passed Economics 101 knows that oil companies have fixed costs (refining, transport, taxes) plus profits that they include in their price. When oil prices were $140/barrel, gasoline was about $4.33/gallon or $182/barrel, so fixed cost + profit was $42/barrel. When oil prices dropped to $70/barrel, gasoline was about $2.67/gallon or $112/barrel, and fixed cost + profit was the SAME at $42/barrel. But you can’t explain that to O’Reilly–he says that crude prices went down 50% and gasoline went down only 38%, therefore the oil companies are gouging us now! Neil Cavuto came on O’Reilly’s show several times and tried to explain it to him, but always got shouted down by the Blowhard Bloviator.
O’Reilly was even worse when the banking crisis hit. Sure, he went after Sen. Dodd and Wep. Bawney Fwank, but also blamed President Bush, as if the President had the power to fire members of Fannie and Freddie! If he did, Franklin Raines and Jim Johnson wouldn’t have lasted long, but they did their dirty work, and Dopey O’Reilly blames Bush and “greedy Wall Street”, and Bush never offered a good rebuttal. And of course, O’Reilly never gave credit to John McCain for trying to rein in Fannie and Freddie in 2005. Maybe Fox needs to have a “Cavuto Factor” instead–Cavuto “gets it!”
Then O’Reilly aired his interview with Obama DURING THE REPUBLICAN CONVENTION! If there was any time to let Palin and McCain have the stage to themselves, this was it. But O’Reilly let Obama steal their thunder, and had all sorts of things he could hammer Obama with, but he wimped out. Isn’t your program a little socialist? Sure, okay, that’s just fine! Where was O’Reilly’s bloviating bluster when he had the chance to destroy Obama?
You’ve got to hand it to Greta Van Susteren lately–she might lean Democrat, but she gave Sarah Palin lots of good interviews which painted her in a positive light. Greta is from Wisconsin, and maybe something about the rough-and-ready moose-hunting woman stirred Greta’s admiration for Palin.
If His Ineffable Highness and Majesty Hussein the First deigns to allow a Presidential election in 2012, Sarah Palin will come roaring back, stronger than ever.

you have to remember that in Alaska the energy companies employ a lot of people, if production is up then the people are working
do some research on her job as governor before making claims
and as for the dude who said that we are treating Palin like Obama
this is not true … many of us like her, sure but most of all we don’t like seeing her thrown under a bus by the same campaign we have just donated too and volunteered for
we don’t appreciate lies about Republicans with a 91% approval rating within the party

I have my supsicions about Salter, too.

It depends on what he does. If he governs from the far left, the economy will tank, enemies will be attacking us and our allies a la Jimmuh Carter, and he will lose the approval of “moderates” who voted for him over McCain, and voters will take it out on the Democrats in Congress in 2010.
If he tries to govern as a centrist, THEN he would be hard to beat in 2012.
Then again, he could issue an Executive Order stating that anyone who votes against him will be executed by the Civilian National Security Force, in which case he will win by a landslide and start the Second Revolutionary War.

I agree about Carl Cameron, I fired an email to O’reilly and the morning show the day after Nancy boy Carl shared his little gossip gleefully and told them what I thought of it.
We’ve got to somehow get at least one decent media program going. I hope Palin smacks Laurer down every time he tries to play gotcha.

She’s also giving an interview to Wolf Blitzer.
CanadianGuy on November 10, 2008 at 5:39 PM
I think the media people just make a lot of this stuff up. After all, if they don’t have to back it up with real quotes and a source..what’s to stop them? Integrity. What a hoot.

Who stands to gain? The reporters, the talking heads, that is who.

O rielly has lost a lot of cred in the last year.
1) Oil companies control gasoline prices
2) Speculators determine gasoline prices
2) Hearsay is not gossip
Most people get smarter as they age. Whats up with you bill?

Eat your heart out Bill. And your high ratings mean nothing when all your competition are the morons at MSNBC and leftists at CNN. It’s like being 10-0 in the weakest division in a league when everyone knows you’d get your buns kicked in the first round of the playoffs versus the other division winner.
Sapwolf on November 10, 2008 at 4:35 PM
Exactly. And my second thought is that eventually his audience of little old ladies will die off, and MSNBC will win his slot.

I’m wondering why O’Reilly didn’t jump on the Larry Sinclair story….given his new definition of news.
And, I’m hoping he decides to give poor Carl some free air time to debunk the Wonder Woman story. Prove it didn’t happen, Carl.

Papa ‘Cuda (Chuck Heath) gave an interview to the AP about the clothes, and a couple of other things. Some idiot on the left has already jumped on his comment about the kids underwear (I won’t link it here, don’t want to give him the traffic), and is trying to twist it into meaning that she bought the kids designer underwear. I think Papa ‘Cuda is awesome, but he should be kept away from the press. He made the original comment to a reporter in Alaska back when the ‘Cuda gave birth to Trig about her water breaking in Texas, and we all know what that led to.
I thought it was interesting too that he said she’s still under 24 protection (now from the Alaska state troopers instead of Secret Service of course), which she never was before. Makes you wonder about death threats. Given that, I thought it was really great of the AP to print the name of Piper’s school. What’s the matter with you people? After the WaPo printed her email address it got hacked. Do people never learn?

Gave up on O’Reilly when he supported Shamnesty.
Such core stupidity reveal a punky mind.
Palin is for real; Bill is for himself.

It seems like a greater point is being missed. The obvious question I would have had for Carl Cameron, is whether or not he did a search of what must be voluminous documentation on Sarah Palin for “Africa” or “NAFTA” to see if she mentioned the subject, and how. He should have taken an hour to call up members of the Alaskan house and senate, and members of her own cabinet to get their views on it — or to point him in the right direction to get confirmation.
That Cameron failed to do so, and then expects Palin to defend herself, is reprehensible. He was clearly just after a headline and not the truth. Some journalist he is. The same goes for Bo’R, who didn’t see a single problem in the way it was handled.

People say she’s damaged goods, but so is everyone else I’ve heard named.
Romney couldn’t make it out of a weak primary field because of his history of changing his stands on issues to suit the audience. And his complete lack of political skills.
I’m not sure how well Jindal would stand up. He’s at least as much of a social conservative than Palin – and he’s explicit about basing it on his catholocism. He’s also the governor of louisiana – no matter how personally clean he is the dems will link him to the corruption in that state.
