Greta on the Palin smears: Carl Cameron told me, “I messed up on this one”

Seven minutes on the difference between news and gossipy “schoolyard trash.” Cameron’s excuse, at least as explained by Greta, is absurd. She makes it sound like all he was trying to say was that there was sniping between the McCain and Palin factions and the Africa/NAFTA detail was merely illustrative. Go watch the clips — both of them, lest you miss his excited “Great doubts!” exclamation to O’Reilly — and judge for yourself how plausible that is. If all he was doing was offering a few examples, how come there wasn’t any dirt flung at McCain? Or is that because Palin’s allies refused to stoop to that?
Note that O’Reilly claims Cameron’s sources were eyewitnesses to everything he reported, not mere conduits. For the record, Steve Schmidt adamantly denies being a leaker. Exit quotation: “You know, I was a critic of her nomination, but everybody is entitled to some basic fairness…” Click the image to listen.

O’Reilly is an idiot, he is so wrong, and he argues as if he is so right, upping the yelling.
Gossip is exactly what Greta said, gossip may even be true, truth has nothing to do with gossip.
It is passing information on a person (anonymously)usually to harm their reputation…how obvious is this, but O’Reilly has some other definition to fit his stance.
O’R…you are angry because Greta, and not you, got the interview.

O’Reilly and Cameron’s excuses are bull. Especially when you consider that Cameron obviously didn’t talk to anyone to check the veracity of what the smearers were saying. Given all the people who have now gone on the record defending Palin it’s obvious that he didn’t check out the stories he reported, he just repeated verbatim (and with rather disgusting glee) what his “sources” told him. Now that they look bad, he and O’Reilly are playing CYA.

Fox News, in general, has changed since the election. I truly believe that a lot of conservatives, like myself, are not watching them because they seem to be getting caught up in Obamamania.
At the same time, they seem to be siding with the Beltway Elite.
Shep needs to take a look at himself. He is just a frat boy from Ole Miss who has done well for himself. He needs to remember his roots.
kingsjester on November 10, 2008 at 2:21 PM
Couple of things here …
1.) O’Reilly must be steamed that Greta landed the interview with Palin. Palin called O’Reilly a couple of weeks ago off the air and told him that she wanted to be on his show, but McCain’s people nixed. Then O’Reilly allows Carl Cameron to trash her on his show and O’Reilly essentially blackmails Palin telling her she’s welcome to be on his show for a half hour on Monday. Coincidentally she will be on Greta’s show for a full hour tonight. O’Reilly fancies himself the top dog at Fox.
2.) Greta has just done something totally not cool in journalism. She just revealed a private conversation with Carl on the air. If Carl Cameron thought his report was wrong he should have went on the air to apologize. Greta has now put him in quite a spot — a spot which I’m glad to see him in.
3.) I know it’s obvious, but O’Reilly really needs to shut up after he asks a question and allow the person to answer it for more than 2 seconds without interuption.

I 2nd and 3rd this; and have wondered for a week when we were going to get around to asking CARL why he was so gleefully (big smile and practically giggling) reporting on this GOSSIP. He lost all credibility with me, and I assume, much of the FOX NEWS audience. After all one thing he said “I wish I could have reported this when it happened.” Carl you are no more than a TURD that should be working over at MSNBC. As you noticed, Major Garrett did not report on the internal gossip from the Obama campaign.
Cameron should be fired.

I loved Greta telling O’Reilly SHE wouldn’t report anonymous gossip even if he would. And him comparing it to Watergate. sheesh – the great towel escapade. It was salacious rumor mongering. I vaguely recall O’Reilly refusing to talk about unsourced rumors about Obama – guess the ones about Palin were just too juicy to pass up.

Time and sustained performance. Reagan was a doddering fool to anywhere from 30 – 50% of the population through his two terms. The kind of people who listen to public radio had “Dump Reagan” bumper stickers in 1984, were kind of sure he intended to blow up the world in order to bring about the Apocalypse, and shivered when they heard Nuclear Freeze activist Helen Caldicott describe him as barely able to put a coherent sentence together. Remember that famous skit with Phil Hartman as Reagan – jibbering like a sentimental fool, then turning into a multilingual mastermind? Nowadays, it looks like joking on the square. At the time, it was funny because the SNL audience mostly believed the sentimental fool part.
CK MacLeod on November 10, 2008 at 2:21 PM
Strange that Bill ORLY? calls himself a journalist and doesn’t know what a primary source is. Sarah Palin is a primary source. A campaign advisor going on anonymity and quoting her is a secondary source, not to mention a coward engaging in gossip. Once this gossip is reported, it is not up to Sarah Palin to appear on his lame show to clear her name. She has spoken to the press. ORLY? should quit whining about how he gave her a chance to set the record straight.

You can hear it in his voice. That wasn’t any “illustrative” details. That was Cameron more than willing to trash Palin. You mean such as when he condescendingly sneered that Palin was incapable of uttering three consecutive coherent words on complex topics?
Sorry, have to disagree with you there. He’s just another one covering his a$$ now that he’s seen that she has a 91% favorable rating.
I’ll still listen to those that managed to criticize her without using phrases like “a cancer”, “vulgarization of American politics”, “cannot speak three consecutive coherent words [on a complex topic]“, “an affliction” etc. The rest of them can go f*#@ themselves.
thirteen28 on November 10, 2008 at 2:24 PM
Why such a back pedaling from the media? Why back pedaling from the McCain insiders who tried to run Palin out on a rail?
How quick the tune has changed since the Rassmussen poll showing her approval ratings at 91%. The “leakers” have been pimp slapped by the grassroots, conservatives who are sick of the piling on of garbage of Palin. Love her or Hate her, there are people from both sides coming to defend her.
Everytime they dump more on her, I feel like I have to defend her like she is my mother or sister or something. McCain should be ashamed of himself for not speaking up. He sure didn’t waste a second defending THE ONE at his rallies when people called him a terrorist or a Muslim.

I think the thing that got to me was the lack of double-checking sources on some of the more outlandish statements (i.e. the Africa and NAFTA things, the Palin tantrums and diva spending sprees). It seems to me that if you’re going to ruin someone’s reputation based on anonymous sources, then you should have proof to back it up.

I can’t stand Cameron and I turn O’reilly off since he’s only into self promotion. The gossip put out about the towel and understanding continents vs countries didn’t make headway with me as I’ve kept up with the “real” information about her. For example, she’s a voracious reader and she’s very punctual.
For those who were duped, how likely is it that a candidate who is scheduled every possible second of every day could possibly be out “shopping” and…..no papparazzi in site?
Our country is in dire need of honesty, Palin has it…I question all the rest!

Jim Treacher on November 10, 2008 at 2:31 PM
Also, because Carl said he couldn’t tell us until after the campaign, that means he had been sitting on this information for days or weeks and had plenty of time to investigate it and find out from other people who were there if these stories were true or false. Considering how outrageous some of these stories — even my lib friends don’t really believe she doesn’t know Africa is a continent — Carl had a duty to check this stuff out.
CanadianGuy on November 10, 2008 at 2:31 PM
I’ll say it again, because it bears repeating: McCain did Palin a favor by not publically sticking up for her. It gives her a chance to 1) speak for herself, rather than depend on Dad doing it for her, and 2) separate herself from McCain and the losing campaign.
I’ll be interested to see whether she already starts putting down some independent policy markers. She never was anything like a vocal supporter of the bailout, for instance. The furthest out front I recall her getting was to say that something had to be done, though not necessarily the particular something that was then under consideration. Otherwise, being forced to defend the bailout – early on in the crisis – resulted in her most famously incoherent exchange with Couric.

I see what you’re saying and if the intent was to ruin Palin’s reputation by revealing “the truth” about her, I would agree.
But what constituted the news in this case was not the truthfulness of the statements but that these statements were made by senior McCain campaign officials.
I didn’t like Carl Cameron’s breathless presentation of it, but the fact that these things were coming straight from staffers was news. Clearly this was not communicated well since so many people have the impression that the point of the report was to smear Palin and it’s fair to hold Cameron and O’Reilly responsible for that mistake.
But still I reserve my wrath for the McCain staffers who went out of their way to leak this information to a news reporter. They’re the real culprits and as the Newsweek stuff shows, if Cameron wouldn’t have reported it somebody else ceratinly would have.
Gilda on November 10, 2008 at 2:37 PM
I supported McCain. I respect him and the amazing service in blood he has given to this nation.
Bottom line: McCain is not a conservative or a republican. He will now go to great lengths to mend fences with his “base” i.e. the media. And in doing so, he will not think twice about throwing anyone under the bus…
I have to say, I thought it interesting in retrospect how few colleagues were out there supporting McCain. Where were the senators like Spector, Frist, Thune, et al? That tells you something about him…he is not well liked within his party, and his colleagues were not going to put their necks on the line for someone that rarely put his neck on the line for the party.
That said, thank God McCain pushed for the surge and helped get us to this point in Iraq.
joepub on November 10, 2008 at 2:39 PM
No shit.
Any long-term exposure to O’Reilly will make you turn on him if you’re paying attention for a number of reasons — ego, smugness, rudeness, repetitiveness (Let’s ask Bernie Goldberg for his views).
The thing I hate is when my lib friends say, “Oh your hero O’Reilly” because I watch Fox. I have to explain to them that most conservatives are mixed at best about BOR. It’s just he has some pretty good regular guests, including Laura Ingraham and Megan Kelly, both who should have his time slot if the world was fair. And what happened to Laurie Dhue?

O’Reilly is an opprotunist. He gets a reporter on his show to call Palin everything short of a serial killer and through O’Reillys “Fairness” he offers her 1/2 hour on the Monday show to “Set the record straight”.
I’m glad Palin chose Greta Van Susteran. It gives the middle finger to O’Reilly and rewards a reporter that has been fair to her and her family.

Doesn’ the “Fairness (NOT) Doctrine” only apply to radio? WHAT IF, they all go to a cable news tv station? Seems like a couple will be up for sale very soon. And wouldn’t it be sweet, sweet, sweet, if “they” bought MSNBC and turned it into a station where “the rest of the real story” would be told?

After allowing Cameron to shoot Palin’s reputation with an AK-47 for a good five precious minutes without even one interjected “COME ON!”, O’Reilly’s snide suggestion that her handlers should have briefed Palin on the map of the world was a new low, even for O’Reilly. Hopefully Palin will never forget this, and boycott his show forever.
