AQ wants to outdo 9/11 in new attack on US

An Arab newspaper in London has reported that al-Qaeda intends on launching an attack on the US that would “outdo by far” the 9/11 attacks. Al-Quds al-Arabi also reported that their Yemeni contact within AQ, a “former senior operative”, says the terrorist network has already begun consolidating its networks in preparation for the attack:
OSAMA bin Laden is planning an attack against the United States that will “outdo by far” September 11, an Arab newspaper in London has reported.
And according to a former senior Yemeni al-Qaeda operative, the terrorist organisation has entered a “positive phase”, reinforcing specific training camps around the world that will lead the next “wave of action” against the West.
The warning, on the front page of an Arabic newspaper published in London, Al-Quds Al-Arabi – and widely reported in the major Italian papers – quotes a person described as being “very close to al-Qaeda” in Yemen.
The paper is edited by Abdel al-Bari Atwan, who is said to be the last journalist to interview Osama bin Laden in 1996. According to the report, bin Laden is himself closely following preparations for an attack against the US and aims to “change the face of world politics and economics”. The operative is quoted as saying that “this will be shown by the fact that we now control a major part of the south of Somalia”.
The Australian newspaper The Age accepts this at face value, despite the hardships AQ has faced over the last few years. They have had difficulty recruiting ever since the collapse of their effort in Iraq, and the financing for their network has become far more problematic since 9/11. The claim to control significant territory in Somalia sounds like a gross exaggeration, but even if they did, Somalia hardly gives them funding or strategic positioning. Most damning is the lack of any real action from AQ over the last two years as they watched their organization get destroyed in Iraq.
That doesn’t make them dead, though, and they may still have enough resources to at least attempt a major action against the US. It only took 19 men to make the 9/11 attacks succeed, after all. We’re now much more vigilant about security and counterterrorism than we were before the attacks, but they’ve also had time to adapt.
What targets would “change the face of world politics and economics”? That sounds like a renewed focus on either New York City or Washington DC, or perhaps both. They could be looking at Wall Street, the UN, or perhaps a strike at Capitol Hill.
Still, this sounds more like empty bravado than an imminent threat. Osama wants to make himself relevant after hitching his wagon to the war in Iraq and losing badly. Talking up his plans for world domination may win him a few more recruits, but he’s too busy hiding from Predators to do much else.

Right now I just pray that this is all talk. I already had a talk about this with my SO is deployed. I never get to see him now. If this happens I will never get to see him period. I hope Obama has the balls to go after these @$$ holes and kill them with no trial and no explananiton. I am truly upset at all of this. Please pray for our troops they need it right now. Another attack on us Americans would really stretch them thin. I just pray that BO has the balls to stop this before it happens and not just wait and see if it does.

Every few months, to rally the troops, this kind of garbage comes out.
Like the losing leaders of a country on the verge of defeat, they stand up and pound there chests…President Bush has decimated their ability to pull of a “mother of all attacks”. Instead they talk a gullible person, or use a child, to kill a few innocent victims in a suicide bomb, and call it a great cause.
How many women want to give up their sons for a losing statement…fewer and fewer…

jeff_from_mpls on November 10, 2008 at 8:48 AM
Can you say “Wall Street?”
They don’t have to get into the U.S. physically. The current economic crisis and this summer’s skyrocketing gas prices had a whole bunch of dudes in sheets gleefully thanking Allah. The Republican’s stand on opening up off-shore drilling, and the President’s support of same sent gas prices into a nose dive (but next admin will squelch that!). The jury is still out on the stimulus package (I don’t think it will do squat…’cept increase the deficit and potentially help aforementioned-dudes-in-sheets gut our Republic.)
I’m not saying they’ve caused the Wall Street meltdown, but they certainly have proven themselves to be resourceful, and I wouldn’t put it past them to take advantage of an opportunity.

How would code pink and the other liberasls react if DC goes up in a big cloud of smoke? or NY? whay alqueeda is trying to do has been trying to do is to start ww3. they came close on 9/11/01. Bush helped him by going after Iraq. But an Obama president may try to “show his strentgh” by an invasion of pakistian. A nuclear armed pakistian. This would tip us into a ww3. with massive civil unrest as the 5th colume within western civilization come sout. And if Obama does nothing? Then the Americian people will flee from him.
Strange times indeed.

Okay, people. This is not a time for panic. I am fairly confident that AQ can in no way affect our country. Think about how they would get in here. Air? Nope. Sea? Nope. Land? Nah. Despite what some people would like to think, we still have the most powerful military in the world!
I am more concerned about other corners of the world. An attack on us does not necessarily have to happen within our borders for it to be devastating. We will have to see…

I love Achmed! Seriously, I don’t know if AQ will have the capabilities for a devastating attack on US soil, but you have to parse through the BS. Perhaps a smaller attack will do. Not millions of people affected, but thousands. Sporting events? Mass Transit? The Oscars? Okay, maybe not the Oscars…..
My biggest fear when I lived in San Francisco area was that someone would attack BART while it was under water (or that the Big One was going to come at that time). Because let’s face facts, if you’re on the train under the Bay and something causes the tunnel to be breached, you’re screwed!!!

The Obama plan for dealing with a massive terrorist attack:
1. Accuse the GOP of engineering the attack because they are racists.
2. Consult with fellow terrorist sympathizer William Ayers to determine how much the US is willing to pay AQ in “reparations” for being an evil capitalist entity.
3. Curb any military action until the UN dictates the US response.
4. Call in stylists to make sure you look good when you hold your first post-attack press conference.

Of course it isn’t funny but let’s not kid ourselves that AQ and the rest of the world know just how weak this President-elect is and how much more “tolerant” Democrats are to terrorism than GWB has been. The terrorists fully expect (with good reason) that a nuclear attack on America will be treated as a crime and not a reason to go to war.
When it comes to matters of national security, Democrats cannot be trusted. Ever. They have too much of an agenda that works against the national interests.

Sorry to be such a downer here but the incoming administration does not provide any hope that America will be a safe place for the next four to eight years.

Before the election the folks up in Okalahoma started stocking up on guns. They are convinced that an Obama Administration is greenlighting an attack by Iran on the West Coast “California” Paranoia or not, they are convinced that the winds from an nuclear attack would effect them and they are talking about using their storm shelters…but it’s nice to have a 47 year old, untried green politician, elected President because he is bi racial, and apparently “Feeling Good about Ourselves” Trumps self survivial. This is how Natural Selection works on a grand scale.
Dr Evil on November 10, 2008 at 9:16 AM
AQ is not stupid. Do not let yourself think for one moment that they are weak right now. They are sitting on a royal flush just waiting for us to go all in and call their bluff, which we already did. Smuggling a TNW into the United States is not as hard as some would think. Where there is a will there is a way.
0321_GUY on November 10, 2008 at 9:16 AM
They’re just begging to be nuked….which is, of course, their strategy in a nutshell – provoke response to add fuel to islamic hatred and destabilize international ties.
But why shouldn’t we nuke them? Make a solemn declaration that our survival has been placed in an untenable position by the blood feud of islam – then erase them from planet earth.

LimeyGeek on November 10, 2008 at 9:23 AM
Personally, I hope they pull it off. I think we have slipped back into a position of feeling secure since we haven’t had an attack since 9/11. I don’t want anyone to die, but Americans have been dying for our freedoms for over two hundred years and they’re going to continue to do so.
Those deaths will be the price we pay to shake us out of our complacency once and for all. Obama will either have to act or dither. If he does the latter, it will be the death of the Democratic party. If he does the former, watch out AQ. If you thought our reaction was fierce when half the people didn’t support it, wait until you see what happens when we’re all behind the president.
Kafir on November 10, 2008 at 9:27 AM
The really destabilizing part would be the EMP. That would certainly “change the face of world politics and economics”. I remain somewhat skeptical, though. I AQ is spending much of its time trying to find its collective teeth, having had them kicked down their throat by W.

Everything in the press now a days must be viewed through the “how can this make Obama look better” filter.
We will soon see on the news shows tickers at the bottoms of the TV screens counting the number of days that al-Queda has not attacked since Obama became President,
- praise of Obama on how AQ has refrained from attacks since he became President,
- stories from the Middle East and Asia (especially Indonesia)on how Muslims view the US better now that Obama is President and so forth.
All good news will be credited to Obama, all bad news will be blamed on Bush and the Republicans.

I’m sure everyone remembers a couple of months ago, when the state department advised against using this term. You know, at first I thought it was patently ridiculous policically correct BS, but as I’ve mulled over this, I’ve come to the conclusion that it is correct.
Using the term Jihadi legitimizes what they are doing in their own terms. To nations of western decent, it is not easy to understand that this is a “righteous” activity in Islam, to wage jihad. I’m more particlular to just calling them terrorists, or islamic terrorists to draw the distinction if needed.
And we need to spray down the deceased terrorists with pig blood. That would do far more than us not legitimizing their activities.
What a mess we’re going to have very soon.
Marine_Bio on November 10, 2008 at 9:43 AM
Well, if that should happen,, that will be when the Obama administration enacts full police state powers.
Katrina was a little window into what the Democrats do when they have complete power over an area during a national emergency. Their resources are spent protecting their stolen monies and properties, CYA, gun confiscation and thuggery,, while the people starve and drown.
Expect anything the size of 911 or larger to be the opportunity for nationwide, door to door gun confiscation to “restore order” and to “protect communities.” Large stashes of guns would be linked, falsely, to possible “home grown terrorist cells.”
That will just be the beginning. The media will run with any lie coming from the Obama team,, because, like Chris Matthews,, they are going to do all they can to ensure Obama succeeds.
