NFL Open Thread: Steelers vs Colts
posted at 12:30 pm on November 9, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
I guess I don’t have to tell anyone what a lousy week I’ve had. Not only did we lose the national election, but I watched most of the Catholic Bowl last night and endured one of the lousiest performances I’ve ever seen from the Fighting Irish. They lost 17-0 to Boston College, who may wind up ranked after this performance. That would seem fitting, since the Irish gave such a rank effort.
Today, I deserve a break, and the Pittsburgh Steelers had better deliver. They play the Indianapolis Colts today, who are in danger of missing the playoffs this year. Big Ben Roethlisberger is expected to play even with his shoulder injury, but Willie Parker is out again. If the Steelers can beat the Colts, they can keep up the pressure on the rest of the division and make their lead even stronger. I’ll predict 27-14, Steelers.
Who are your teams? Expect them to win?

Yep. Root for the Packers. They’re a publicly owned sports team. Average citizens all over Wisconsin own stock in them. Its a triumph of capitalism.
And to any of you guys who claim they treated Favre poorly…give me a break. He needs to not be such a primadonna every single offseason in terms of whether or not he’s going to play.
They’re winningright now on the back of their special teams and defense.

Of course my local Fox coverage is screwing me in terms of what game they’re showing. They switched from the Jets to the Seahawks, and now they just switched to the Falcons/Saints. Who cares? PACKERS VIKINGS. THAT GETS THE RATINGS.
jimmy the notable on November 9, 2008 at 4:03 PM
Damn Seahawks.
nickj116 on November 9, 2008 at 4:05 PM
Steelers vs. Colts?
Who cares?
My Titans are still undefeated and you might as well switch sports and think of Spring Training.
They are The ONE!!!!
Sapwolf on November 9, 2008 at 4:07 PM
Ed,
Do you still believe that ND and BC are ‘catholic’? Or is that ‘paper-catholic’? I sometimes think Georgetown is orthodox if those two schools were still catholic.
Sapwolf on November 9, 2008 at 4:09 PM
Not only are my Titans undefeated, so is Alabama.
Freaking orgasm here in Huntsville, AL.
Enjoy it while you can.
Obama will ‘arrange’ it that the Bears come back and beat the Titans in the SuperBowl next time they meet.
BCS: Bama vs. TexasTech.? Looks like a good one.

Are we tied for first place? I love me some Gus!

Sorry Ed, I hope the Steelers lose, it would be poetic justice since they helped to elect a loser to the WH!
I thought the people of “Steel Country” would of had the sense and steel spine to vote for a real leader…I thought wrong.
Just sayin’

Why in the world can’t my Pack stop a run? One run……any run? How can we lose to a coach that can’t manage an egg timer.
oakpack on November 9, 2008 at 5:07 PM
This is one of those rare years when all my favorite teams are playing extremely well. I’m a life long Giants fan, and their comeback last season was unbelievable. This year they are playing like champions, and Eli Manning has matured into a fine QB. I always he’s be second banana to Peyton, but this year is proving otherwise.
Perhaps due to my geographical location these days, I m very impressed with the Titans. They were not predicted to do anything this year, yet remain undefeated.
On the college front, I’m a Buckeye alumnus, so you know where my loyalty lies. They have 2 painful losses, and it looks like old Joe Paterno has himself a possible national championship on his hands. They whooped the Bucks last week and they remain unbeaten.
Sorry about your bad week, Ed. B.C. really did play well and the Irish just phoned in the game last night
simkeith on November 9, 2008 at 5:09 PM
I hear ya, the Packers cost me a win in my pool this week!

Grew up in NE Pa; cheering on the Eagles & NY Giants.
Then spent 30 years in metro Atlanta (loved Georgia,
but the Falcons were sooooooo lame).
Find myself back in NE Pa; this time around the Steelers
are my #1……especially since my favorite Georgia
Bulldog Hines Ward is playing here :-) Luv that Hines
Ward grin ;-)
BTW, why isn’t Willie Parker playing (I missed out on the
beginning of the game (checking out Nascar). I keep hoping
the announcers will say something, but so far they
haven’t.

ROFL! Nice to meet you!
0-9 Baby!! Cmon 0-16!!
With the parity in the NFL, where on any given Sunday, any team may be able to beat another team, it takes a special kind of futility to have multiple years in a decade where a team goes 0-9.
Go Lion’s opponents!!

That to me is unexplainable…after all the hard work and sacrifices that the McCain campaign and efforts put there. We’ll see if the coal mines, steel mills and the Primanti’s live to tell the tale (On the Primanti’s, those are some MEAN sandwiches!).
Had the party, dinner, presents and all…it is fun to have the folks watching good ol’ Steelers. So far, 17-7 is a good score for me! :D

Willie Parker hurt his shoulder-message from my DH.

Thanx. Should have checked the Steelers web site before asking.
Sheesh, who isn’t hurt…..Big Ben, Hines Ward, Troy P. In addition to Willie Parker out….also Najeh Davenport.

Titans will go 19-0 this year.
You heard it here first!!

How many Jets fans (any?) besides me around here? Well, they won, ’cause it’s my Birthday YeY!

My team has a bye, they did quite enough last Monday night, thank you very much. /sarc.

Though at least the Eagles aren’t the Redskins or Cowboys.
Go Giants!

rbj on November 9, 2008 at 5:47 PM
What can I say? Do you know how bad the Eagles were when I was a kid? In those days the Eagles left my family wanting to slit our collective wrists.
Geographically, the Giants were just up the road a piece. Truth: we were cheering the Giants when Frank Gifford was still playing ;-) It was a long time ago….
poodlemom on November 9, 2008 at 5:52 PM
I just hope the team with the most African-Americans its roster wins–regardless of how well they do.

Skol Vikings, let’s go!!!!
WaltDakota on November 9, 2008 at 5:57 PM
I’m a little after the Gifford years. Though the 70s were pretty lean years for the Gints.
So when do the Detroit Lions apply for a bailout?
rbj on November 9, 2008 at 6:07 PM
Its especially infuriating because on that last drive by the Vikings, they gave it to Peterson on 6 out of the 7 plays. I mean, double cover the guy or something.
I wouldn’t mind it if they would just get slaughtered, but to make it a game only to blow it on the last drive week after week is getting annoying. And last week we had the pleasure of blowing it on the last drive to the Titans not once, but twice.
I feel bad for Mason Crosby though, he’s a hell of a kicker most of the time.
jimmy the notable on November 9, 2008 at 6:10 PM
I got no comment from anyone about my prediction that the Titans are going to go 19-0 this year, I guess everyone agrees. :)
ZzzzDad on November 9, 2008 at 6:13 PM
Did the Steelers send Obama a jersey? Or was it something to do with a player? I only caught the end of the story on the radio…
DCJeff on November 9, 2008 at 6:28 PM

jimmy the notable on November 9, 2008 at 6:10 PM
I thought they could have tried to get a little closer…teams in the NFL are bad about that. Kickers aren’t gonna hit 52 yarders every time. Ten yards closer and that was a win for the Packers
DCJeff on November 9, 2008 at 6:31 PM
Count on the Steelers to run the same failed play twice. Ben, y’know Mewelde can run and catch. Heck, even a pitch would’ve worked.
Christien on November 9, 2008 at 6:50 PM
And Green Bay, if Viks are down a TD at the end of the game, there’s no way they’d ever give the ball to Peterson every time. Inconceivable!

For jimmy and oakpack:

Ok, so my prediction at 2:02pm about the Colts-Steelers final score was on the money – wish i wagered on it !

The Curse of the Obama Team Jersey begins!!!!!!!!! Sorry, Ed I love my country more than my Steelers. Hopefully the traitorous Rooney family will soon sell. Art Sr. would never have supported scum like Obama. His son is a disgrace.

Dan Rooney was a pretty big Obama supporter. He gave Obama a Steelers jersey when he made a stop in Pittsburgh last month.

Oh no! The STEELERS, they lost!
AZDREAMER on November 9, 2008 at 9:31 PM
Some Conservatives are smart!
nagee76 predicted the exact score.
In all fairness, Art Rooney has done a lot for the City of Pittsburgh and the county around it. The Univ. of Pittsburgh, Duquesne University and businesses on the North Side owe a lot to the Rooney family.
Like most NFL teams, the Steelers have profited from tax dollars for stadia and legal help for real estate development and other businesses. Art Rooney has been associated with the Democratic Party for decades.
I was put off since Art Rooney endorsed Obama months ago then honored him with a Steelers home jersey with 08 as the number and Obama marked as the name. The jersey was handed to Obama just before the election at a rally in Mellon Arena.
The humorous aspect is that Rooney operates in an area that has been ruled by a Democratic Party machine for 50 years. Despite great schools, hospitals, a hard working population, a reasonable cost of living, a low crime rate, natural resources and a great location for shipping, the economy is a mess. Rooney has spent more time with politicians than the rest of the businessmen in the area combined.

4th quarter. At least I hope I heard that right. Oh no! Colts are ahead!! Can I cry now? Go Steelers Go! There is still time to beat them!

My football season is going pretty well so far.
Tar Heels and Panthers are both 7-2.
