Politico: McCain staffers starting to rally to Palin’s defense; Update: Biegun debunks NAFTA, Africa smears

Better late than never. Nothing yet from Steve Schmidt, but foreign policy guru Steve Biegun and spokesman Tracy Schmitt — among others — are on the case.

That she remains a player and may be the party’s nominee in four years would make it smart politics for Republican staffers to praise her in print. But those who went on the record suggest that they were doing so out of genuine affection for Palin and a sense that the image of her coming out of the election – that of a self-absorbed conniver — was not indicative of the person they knew.

“I’m appalled by it because Sarah Palin was one of nicest people I have ever had the chance to work with,” says Biegun, a former Bush NSC aide. “I’ve worked in Washington for 20 years, on the Hill, in the White House and in the private sector, and she ranks at the highest levels of decency, kindness and graciousness of anybody I’ve ever worked with.”…

“Gov. Palin was a breath of fresh air, particularly for those of us who’ve been living in the Washington bubble,” said Tracey Schmitt, the vice presidential nominee’s traveling spokeswoman and a veteran of the RNC and both Bush campaigns. “Because she is a working mom, she brought a real sense of perspective to the campaign trail, which was important.”…

Two other McCain aides who were pressed unexpectedly into Palin duty also have only positive things to say about her now

“One of the great developments of this campaign is the addition of Sarah Palin as a powerful and energetic new voice in American public life,” said Taylor Griffin, a McCain press aide who had been focusing on economic issues until he was dispatched to Alaska in late August. “She’s smart, insightful, and has an uncanny ability to ask the right questions.”

Biegun is the one who approved the prank call from “Sarkozy” and was, apparently, quite graciously absolved for it by the ‘Cuda afterwards.

Here’s more on her diva-ness or lack thereof from Greta’s show last night. Exit question: Romney likes to refer (awkwardly) to conservatism as a three-legged stool of “strong military, strong economy and strong family.” Palin’s cornered the market on the last one, but that’s the least important insofar as Obama’s first term will be defined by how well he handles the first two. If the economy comes back, Afghanistan improves, and he keeps the bomb out of Iran’s hands, no one will beat him in 2012. If, god help us, the economy’s still in the toilet and foreign policy is a shambles, we’ll run on that. Either way, social conservatism won’t matter much except to the extent that it usually does, as a basic litmus test to make sure the base turns out. In which case, what’s the argument for Palin, who’s young enough to wait and run in 2016, 2020, or even, conceivably, in 2032, when she’d still be younger than Maverick was this year? Newt, on the other hand…

Update: More from Biegun via Lowry at the Corner:

He says there’s no way she didn’t know Africa was a continent, and whoever is saying she didn’t must be distorting “a fumble of words.” He talked to her about all manner of issues relating to Africa, from failed states to the Sudan. She was aware from the beginning of the conflict in Darfur, which is followed closely in evangelical churches, and was aware of Clinton’s AIDS initiative. That basically makes it impossible that she thought all of Africa was a country.

On not knowing what countries are in NAFTA, Biegun was part of the conversation that led to that accusation and it convinces him “somebody is acting with a high degree of maliciousness.” He was briefing Palin before a Univision interview, and talking to her about trade issues. He rolled through NAFTA, CAFTA, and the Colombia FTA. As he talked, people were coming in and out of the room, handing Palin things, etc. She was distracted from what Biegun was saying, and said, roughly, “Ok, who’s in NAFTA, what the deal with CAFTA, what’s up the FTA?”—her way, Biegun says, of saying “rack them and stack them,” begin again from the start. “Somebody is taking a conversation and twisting it maliciously,” he says.

Nothing yet from Steve Schmidt

That’s inaccurate. He’s gone on the record supporting Palin and specifically denying that the towel/bathrobe incident (which supposedly involved him) ever took place.

CK MacLeod on November 8, 2008 at 2:05 PM

Odd what a 91% approval rating can do to change the winds.

carbon_footprint on November 8, 2008 at 2:06 PM

McCain’s entire team is pretty dull going except for Palin and they should all just fade to black

clnurnberg on November 8, 2008 at 2:06 PM

Too late John. You left her swinging in the wind too long and now you are being called a coward for not standing up for her. You and everyone else in your campaign don’t deserve to have a job in the next round for 2012. Actually, in your case 2010.
As far as I am concerned, anyone on the McCain 08 campaign should find a new line of work. Except for Sarah of course.

JeffinOrlando on November 8, 2008 at 2:08 PM

I will be glad when the GOP voters get to have a say in who shall lead the party rather than a bunch of inside party hacks who helped lead it to defeat.

If the economy comes back, Afghanistan improves, and he keeps the bomb out of Iran’s hands, no one will beat him in 2012.

The first two are guaranteed no matter what he does. Yeah, the economy would come back even better if he weren’t President but it will improve either way after 4 years. And if things stay a little down that actually helps him. Some improvement but work left to be done is a great thing to run on for re-election. And the third thing, Iran, won’t hurt him. That will be blamed on Bush-Cheney, no matter what happens. Face it folks, he’s got this for 8 years unless he starts doing things like don’t ask don’t tell, the fairness doctrine, making derogatory remarks about flyover country, Michele is caught on camera saying “cracker”, and he has some huge administration scandal. ALL THAT would need to happen to even give us a fighting chance.

D0WNT0WN on November 8, 2008 at 2:10 PM

After 4 years of far left govt the culture war stuff may come back into vogue. 4 years ago we would not have predicted that Iraq would be so far down the list of voter priorities. In other words, 2012 might have issues in the forefront we can’t predict yet.

Right on! McCain pissed this campaign right down his leg. I have great respect for his service to this country, but he Mavericked himself right out of this election and his dumbass campaign staff is trying to hang it on Sarah. She’s the only one that kept him in it and thanks to her, he didn’t get pounded any worse than he did.

Time to steele ourselves as the loyal opposition. I was once told that dissent is patriotic.

Wyznowski on November 8, 2008 at 2:13 PM

Unfortunately, once the rumors are out there, it’s like trying to put toothpaste back into the tube. These latest Palin stories have already become integrated into the Palin haters’ spiel. They’re not going to believe refutations.

BUT, we have Hillary as a good example of how a candidate can overcome scandal and innuendo. Many of the worst attacks against her were never satisfactorily resolved, yet she was able to win a Senate seat and come very close to the candidacy. Just give it a few years for the dust to settle.

How about “Newt’s already been in power”? And while he was great at getting the Republicans into power in Congress, he wasn’t all that great at retaining it. (He was Speaker for what — 6 years only?) I do like him, but I really think it would be better for the country if we had a lot more outsiders going to Washington. This includes wholesale chances in Congress.

If, in 2012, social conservatism doesn’t so much matter all that much, then I would say that we are pretty screwed.

Strong social values should go hand in hand with economic principles and foreign policy.

myrenovations on November 8, 2008 at 2:21 PM

You can’t tell me that snippy and backstabbing remarks haven’t been made by the Obama campaign staff about their candidates. You can’t have a bunch of people work that closely for such a long time in such a tense atmosphere without someone saying something derogatory about another, whether it’s a certain mannerism or how he takes his waffles seriously. I wouldn’t be surprised if bringing the Palin comments to light isn’t just another attempt by the MSM to make the GOP look bad. That’s right, no confidence in their reporting.

scalleywag on November 8, 2008 at 2:21 PM

Newt, on the other hand…

I actually like Newt a lot. But I don’t have confidence that he could win an election in the current climate. It’s ridiculous, really, but we’ll need someone with star power. The libs have set the bar and we’re gonna have to measure up.

…on the Obama presumptions and such, I do hope someone is keeping track of all these things…the ‘required’ language change, the Nancy Reagan goof in his 1st presser, the dotGov domain name, the outrageous ads that ran AFTER he was elected calling us all to ‘join in support of’ the new president elect (had to mute those when they came up repeatedly on FNC in my southern red state on Thursday), and the list goes on….

@ njcommuter on November 8, 2008 at 2:15 PM

I don’t think its the left throwing sewage on her. Frankly, its her own giant fumbles that have caused this. Not being able to name a single newspaper or magazine to Couric, and a nearly 7 minutes prank phone call from “Sarkozy” where she sounded oblivious to the obvious jokes being made at her expense are the two main reasons people are throwing sewage at her. Of everyone I know who is republican, almost none have a favorable opinion of her. If she tries to make a run in 2012, wait until Obama drudges up all of her giant foibles. He will literally make her sound like a retard in his ads, and her favorability will plummet again. Obama was able to cause her favorability to drop by nearly 20 points when he focused on her in this campaign, and she was only running for 5 weeks, two of which Obama completely ignored her.

If the economy is in an upswing in 2012 and if Afghanistan has gone well and if foreign policy in general is going well (which I hope for because I don’t want to go broke or die) then our best argument will be social conservatism.

There will be at least one if not two new Obama Supreme Court Justices. There will probably be that Planned Parenthood Act and maybe the repeal of DOMA.

I’ve been thinking on something like this. I’m trying to figure out it there is a snappy way of presenting it at the foundation of Conservative/Republican policy. Maybe as one of those red/blue/green overlapping circles diagram:
Security: Strong Military
Economy: Low taxes, deregulation
Morality: Personal Responsibility, Family values?

Security+Economy: Energy policy
Security+Morality: Opposition to dictatorships, War on Terror
Economy+Morality: Free trade, private charity, welfare reform

The next step for Palin would giving a long, detailed policy analysis speech at a conservative conference, with it hopefully ending up on C-SPAN.

The way Dan Quayle fought his allegations was to just prove them wrong by demonstrating his intelligence through speeches and books. His only mistake was not proving them wrong fast enough.

Write a detailed policy analysis book, Sarah. Something about energy policy or whatever. Go for it. I would love for Sarah to prove all her critics wrong.

Or the whole thing’s BS.

Darth Executor on November 8, 2008 at 2:40 PM

Thanks for that image, Bubba. That was something I couild have done without.

Well, I haven’t seen any proof it isn’t true. (Which is of course now the standard.) Better get out ahead of this one, Cameron!

Jim Treacher on November 8, 2008 at 2:41 PM

I don’t get why you say Palin has cornered the market on family. I’m scratching my head, trying to figure out where Mitt has fallen down on this one.

Buy Danish on November 8, 2008 at 2:39 PM

He was pro-choice and suddenly flipped when he was trying to be the Republican nominee. Nobody trusts him on it (except for Romney groupies).

Darth Executor on November 8, 2008 at 2:41 PM

Hawkdriver,
I did know that. Skynard man myself.

thomasaur on November 8, 2008 at 2:37 PM

Yeah, me too. Showing my age. Wiki, (that unimpeachable internet source) has a good bit about it to include a lot of the incident stuff that ends up on the track. Like Van Zant talking to a sound guy when he says Turn It Up. Accident. They also wanted more of Southern Man playing in the background but they were concerned about Young suing.

Great Stories. Rossington/Collins Band was a complete disappointment though. They tried to hard to sound like Skynard and they tried hard not to sound like Skynard. Lots of fighting too, even on stage.

hawkdriver on November 8, 2008 at 2:42 PM

Unfortunately, once the rumors are out there, it’s like trying to put toothpaste back into the tube. These latest Palin stories have already become integrated into the Palin haters’ spiel. They’re not going to believe refutations.

BUT, we have Hillary as a good example of how a candidate can overcome scandal and innuendo. Many of the worst attacks against her were never satisfactorily resolved, yet she was able to win a Senate seat and come very close to the candidacy. Just give it a few years for the dust to settle.

Dee2008 on November 8, 2008 at 2:13 PM

Yeah, but Hillary is a Democrat. HUGE difference. Smears of Republicans are built to last (see Dan Quayle, though Palin is no Quayle).

ddrintn on November 8, 2008 at 2:42 PM

Lefties of all stripes are not logical. Conservatives must use logic carefully with just enough to satisfy the base. Emotion is the socialist thing. Sarah combined the two in a way that nobody has done in a long time.
Forget the “recent unpleasantness” and let’s get on with life.

There’s a Palin in your future.

BTW Thanks Elmer for the opening last post.

Caststeel on November 8, 2008 at 2:43 PM

outrageous ads that ran AFTER he was elected
That was AARP. Cancelled my membership years ago when they came out against Bush’s proposal to let us manage some of our own social security account.

Dee2008 on November 8, 2008 at 2:28 PM

Um…I think these were by Obama’s people as they featured the change.gove website

LEBA on November 8, 2008 at 2:43 PM

Either way, social conservatism won’t matter much except to the extent that it usually does, as a basic litmus test to make sure the base turns out.

Typical Allahpundit quasi-leftist spin. Sarah Palin battled and defeated corruption in Alaska, is a fiscal conservative, and is bullish on America developing its resources and regaining some semblance of energy independence. To denigrate her as just a social conservative insults not only her, but the overwhelming majority of Republicans who supported her and were energized by her presence on the ticket.

Phildorex on November 8, 2008 at 2:43 PM

At least those who praise her are giving their names – afraid of Operation Leper maybe?

Yep.

But they could be CYA, although I don’t think Schuenaemann and Biegun are.

CanadianGuy on November 8, 2008 at 2:44 PM

Unfortunately, the die is cast. The late night comedians have their material, and the internet is abuzz about how supposedly stupid she is. Carl Cameron should be ashamed, as should Fox News for running with this “story” before fully checking it out. And please spare me how they had the “scoop” and had to run with it. No major news outfit should have run with this story before fully investigating it. Fox stooped to National Enquirer standards.

As it has been said, these kinds of stories are above the fold page 1, and the corrections will be in small type on page 26. No one will listen except those, like us, who already knew the story was crap to begin with.

Darth Executor on November 8, 2008 at 2:40 PM

If that’s the case then Campaign Carl needs to find a new line of work.

FloatingRock on November 8, 2008 at 2:44 PM

If the economy comes back, Afghanistan improves, and he keeps the bomb out of Iran’s hands, no one will beat him in 2012.

Uh, can please seem him at work before we start saying we are doomed in 2012? That would be nice.

Too funny!

hawkdriver on November 8, 2008 at 2:44 PM

I am beginning to think that McCain does know who is the culprit. He is between a rock and a hard place. If he makes a statement, he slams his campaign staff. If he doesn’t come forward he is inadvertently slamming his running mate. I thought McCain had the chops to be President, but now I think he is more comfortable hiding his head in the sand wishing it would all go away. If his staff can’t even get this story straight, this is no wonder their campaign went down in flames. I want my donation back.

Given the outcome, I don’t see a rock and hard place. Slam the friggin’ staff. But we’re talking about McCain here.

ddrintn on November 8, 2008 at 2:47 PM

The smears are simply an attempt to keep Governor Palin out of politics, especially in 2012. But I believe and hope that Governor Palin will continue to serve the people of this country. I hate to break it to the libs, but she ain’t going nowhere. In fact, in four years there will be lots of fresh faced 18 year old girls, who just may be thrilled with Governor Palin. After all, in four years we will see exactly what Dear Leader can do.

bloggless on November 8, 2008 at 2:48 PM

Dan Quayle had a small avenue to express his ideas to the media. The” media” is more larger now and she can fix her image by giving many interviews and eventually those trickle down and spread around the net and folks will give her a pass on the past if they feel comfortable with her.

She eventually get those too soon for the vp presidency in 08 but now we believe she is qualified enough to lead the nation pieces…..

Perfect Land !!!!

Palinpuma on November 8, 2008 at 2:48 PM

You can’t call it ‘morality’ because they will slam you for accusing them of not being moral or of being the ‘religious right’…I like Economy+Security+Family Values. It’s not as cute but it is something even the lefties would have trouble dissing…

LEBA on November 8, 2008 at 2:36 PM

“Family Values” is too small, and not fundamental enough–morality extends beyond the family.
Who are “they,” and, if they object to our being for “morality,” what does that say about them?
This is foundational stuff, a time to be bold, not PC.

Count to 10 on November 8, 2008 at 2:48 PM

Palin’s cornered the market on the last one, but that’s the least important insofar as Obama’s first term will be defined by how well he handles the first two. If the economy comes back, Afghanistan improves, and he keeps the bomb out of Iran’s hands, no one will beat him in 2012.

Also, Allahpundit maybe if the economy is booming and there’s nothing going on militarily in four years, people might care more about social and family issues.
