Video: “Governor Palin did nothing wrong,” says … Nicolle Wallace? Update: She’s innocent, says Chris Wallace

Submitted for your approval and/or skepticism. Either she’s not the backbiter Kristol, Frum, et al. insist she is or else she’s a particularly brazen liar, willing to slobber over Palin for the Today show audience while spitting venom at her off the record. Or, third option: She saw Palin’s GOP approval ratings at Rasmussen this morning, realized that criticizing her now qualifies as a sin against conservatism, and decided at the last minute she’d best use her time with Lauer to make nice. Mission accomplished, in that case.

Meanwhile, Randy Scheunemann once again rides to the ‘Cuda’s defense:

One top McCain aide came to Palin’s defense today. Randy Scheunemann, McCain’s top foreign policy adviser, who helped prepare Palin for her vice presidential debate, praised Palin’s campaign effort and intelligence.

“I’ve been working over 20 years in Washington and I’ve been around literally dozens and dozens of politicians. She is among the smartest, toughest, most capable politicians I’ve ever dealt with,” Scheunemann said. “She has a photographic memory.”

But the tension between the Palin camp and other GOP groups is likely to continue or get worse. Lawyers for the Republican National Committee are heading to Alaska to try to account for all the money that was spent on clothing, jewelry and luggage, according to The New York Times.

I sense some people have the impression that Scheunemann is an old friend of/aide to Palin and that’s why he’s defending her. Not so: He’s been a D.C. lobbyist for years and was a foreign-policy advisor to McCain before she joined the ticket. As far as I know, they hadn’t met before she came aboard. To believe she’s a moron, you have to explain why a guy like him — with no longstanding loyalty to motivate him and with his credibility inside Washington on the line — would defend her so assiduously if what he says isn’t true. Palin-haters and Trig Truthers will point to those Rasmussen numbers and claim it’s because he wants a role in her next campaign, but he could have just as easily said nothing about her, good or bad, and still been lined up for that (especially since he’s reportedly pals with Kristol, who’ll probably be one of her biggest champions in the media for 2012). Instead, he went to such lengths to protect her reputation that he nearly got himself fired from the campaign and alienated powerful people within Team Maverick in the process. That’s a long way to go for a “moron.”

Update: David Frum notes that Chris Wallace is defending Nicolle:

I just heard Chris Wallace on the Mike Gallagher show insisting that Nicole Wallace (no relation) is innocent and that my speculations above are completely wrong. I have a lot of trust in Chris. But if (as he implies) he does affirmatively know who is doing this leaking – should he not tell his viewers? What kind of game are we playing whereby people with potentially self-serving motives can place such lethal (but not 100% credible) stories on the public record – unproven, unchallenged, and unsourced, while the people who broadcast the allegations connive in concealing the information that would allow listeners to decide for themselves how credible the allegations are?

Must be one of the small minded, bitter people Sarah was describing..

feeble minded idiot.

DaveC on November 7, 2008 at 12:42 PM

Hadn’t head that one. I only got the questions I asked about and that wasn’t one of them.

But, it sure is interesting and not un-believable.

aquaviva on November 7, 2008 at 12:40 PM

That’s what Eric Erickson told Ed he heard and he said it was a female staffer. I think he said it was in a very public place with reporters around or something like that. Ask your friend about this.

CanadianGuy on November 7, 2008 at 12:43 PM

He never said he thought it was true. He was speculating on the motivation of the person doing the leaking.

You really should stop leaping to conclusions. You’ve been doing that a lot since Tuesday. Are you still hung over?

MarkTheGreat on November 7, 2008 at 12:41 PM

I’m a she, and thanks…I meant no harm, truly.

haikusrock on November 7, 2008 at 12:45 PM

Waiting for Palin to personally deny that she didn’t know Africa was a continent, not a country….

indythinker on November 7, 2008 at 12:31 PM

Maybe she’ll get to it after she personally denies Trig is Bristol’s kid. And after she personally denies she answered the door in a bathrobe.

Are you dense?

MadisonConservative on November 7, 2008 at 12:45 PM

Waiting for Palin to personally deny that she didn’t know Africa was a continent, not a country….

indythinker on November 7, 2008 at 12:31 PM

listen to the bob and mark interview and you’ll hear Sarah Palin name the “attacks” and dismiss them all. You should actually read/listen to some stuff before you spout off your invective.

conservative pilgrim on November 7, 2008 at 12:46 PM

So it’s up in the air. I think she should stay governor till 2012 and if she can get more good experience up there – and prove her mettle especially during this economic mess Obama is gonna bring, then run for President.

lorien1973 on November 7, 2008 at 12:21 PM

Not that my opinion matters, but I believe she would better serve her career by staying in Alaska. (Can she run for re-election?) Being in the Senate does something to the heads of Republicans. Something not pretty. She can keep her face in the news by doing fundraisers for other Republicans as well as giving speeches in the various high profile events that are held every few months.

MarkTheGreat on November 7, 2008 at 12:46 PM

“MarkTheGreat on November 7, 2008 at 12:40 PM”

um, the guy who just won started after the midterms — and beat a woman who had been running for the better part of a decade …

Buckaroo on November 7, 2008 at 12:47 PM

Where’s John McCain???

SueM on November 7, 2008 at 12:12 PM

Exactly. MIA (video).

He defended Obama more than he defends his own running mate.

Cuffy Meigs on November 7, 2008 at 12:48 PM

Ever since I joined here, I’ve defended Palin, and I’ve helped on Team Sarah as well. I’m not bringing the “garbage” here, we’re in a thread about the garbage. I don’t see why I’m being vilified for being upset about what’s being said about her, and connecting the dots of disgust in that regard.

haikusrock on November 7, 2008 at 12:23 PM

Don’t go over reacting yourself. There’s only one poster vilifying you, and several defending you.

MarkTheGreat on November 7, 2008 at 12:48 PM

The treatment of Palin and the election of Obama proved two things to me: sexism is alive and well in this country, and racism is so five minutes ago.

haikusrock on November 7, 2008 at 12:41 PM

I agree, but would amend the latter part to state that racism is now paradoxically used by blacks for extortion.

LimeyGeek on November 7, 2008 at 12:48 PM

Chris Wallace would probably know who leaked what to Carl Cameron and what Cameron reported is pretty much a compilation of all the other leaks, with the exception that he did not have the GOP lawyers doing the clothing audit in Alaska.

So I guess it’s not her.

CanadianGuy on November 7, 2008 at 12:49 PM

MarkTheGreat on November 7, 2008 at 12:46 PM

But wouldn’t it be just spectacular to see her front & center on the senate floor, ramming turd sandwich after turd sandwich down others’ throats?

LimeyGeek on November 7, 2008 at 12:50 PM

Again I state I think its a male member of the McCain staff.

Waiting for Obama to personally deny that there are 57 states.

MarkTheGreat on November 7, 2008 at 12:51 PM

Well, David Frum’s pursuit of the truth regarding these Palin-leakers is earning him some points again in my book. I didn’t like how he himself spurned her, but at least the man’s trying to hold Fox News accountable for letting these disgruntled campaign aides get away with publishing 100% anonymous, unchallenged stories.

Tacitus_SGL on November 7, 2008 at 12:51 PM

Waiting for Palin to personally deny that she didn’t know Africa was a continent, not a country….

indythinker on November 7, 2008 at 12:31 PM

What would that even prove? People like you would just claim that she knows that now but didn’t know it then.

Stupidest comment I’ve read today. Which says a lot. Wise has been posting this morning.

Esthier on November 7, 2008 at 12:52 PM

Frum, Chris Wallace, and Nicolle Wallace are scum. They can reveal the names of the people behind the smear campaign or I have no reason to not believe that Wallace is doing it with the aid of the MSM like Chris Wallace.

Blake on November 7, 2008 at 12:53 PM

The Rasmussen rating for Palin is a start, but we need to help control what is being accepted about Palin. The leftists are of course trying to do to Palin what they did to Quayle. All he did was add an extra “e” at the end of potato. Mean while we ignore all the “miss-statements” of the dem candidates. Well, I say we need to remind them in a big way of their human tendancies and ignore their attempt to make Palin irrelevant.

lwssdd on November 7, 2008 at 12:53 PM

Well, David Frum’s pursuit of the truth regarding these Palin-leakers is earning him some points again in my book.

He obviously has some personal animosity with Nicolle Wallace so I don’t think he’s really doing it to win approval from us.

CanadianGuy on November 7, 2008 at 12:53 PM

Great interview from Rick Santorum on Megyn Kelly. And #3 for Nicole Wallace.

chunderroad on November 7, 2008 at 12:54 PM

Frum is trying to score points and grind an axe.

He pretty much said he thinks Palin is an imbecile on the radio this morning.

He just doesn’t think Wallace should get away with bashing Palin anonymously.

myrenovations on November 7, 2008 at 12:55 PM

Nicolle Wallace knows everybody who had access to Palin. She better start naming all their names.

Blake on November 7, 2008 at 12:55 PM

During the markandbob interview, she would not say “no” to taking over stevens senate seat; and she hedged when asked about 2012.

I disagree. I think she was crystal clear she would not put herself in that seat nor would she run for it. The “hedging” was because of the change in law because of Stevens (?) appointing his daughter (nepotism) and not being clear on what it is. She said it would be the height of hypocrisy for her to do that. I think she was adamant about staying Governor.

So it’s up in the air. I think she should stay governor till 2012 and if she can get more good experience up there – and prove her mettle especially during this economic mess Obama is gonna bring, then run for President.

lorien1973 on November 7, 2008 at 12:21 PM

i totally agree. Governors make better Presidents, as I think we’ll find out over the next four years. She’s up for re-election in 2010. It’d be great if she can get that Alaskan/Canadian pipeline completed, and keep doing what she’s been doing in Alaska. The last 9 weeks showed her what she needs to do IF she wants to run.

conservative pilgrim on November 7, 2008 at 12:56 PM

haikusrock on November 7, 2008 at 12:23 PM

There’s a lot of sensitivity about this topic. I agree with you that part of the smear campaign was to take away the vision of a wonderful mother of 5 and plant the vision of Palin that Randi Rhodes first offered up.

nyrofan on November 7, 2008 at 12:57 PM

CanadianGuy on November 7, 2008 at 12:53 PM

Point taken, but at least Frum is man enough to come to Palin’s defense and try and find the leaker.

He’s more of a man than Brooks or Parker could ever hope to be.

CanadianGuy on November 7, 2008 at 12:13 PM

Looks like it, doesn’t it? Shame on John McCain. He has a responsibility to both Sarah Palin and the future of the Republican party, and it looks like he’s just walking away from it.

ProfessorMiao on November 7, 2008 at 12:59 PM

She can’t. She was one of the leakers. I have an inside source in McCain HQ. Read my post on previous page.

aquaviva on November 7, 2008 at 12:59 PM

Isn’t Wallace a republican? If so, she has to know how this hurts us. So, if it is not her, she should supply a list of names of every aid in the campaign so they can be asked directly if they are the ones talking trash.

Blake on November 7, 2008 at 12:59 PM

But wouldn’t it be just spectacular to see her front & center on the senate floor, ramming turd sandwich after turd sandwich down others’ throats?

LimeyGeek on November 7, 2008 at 12:50 PM

As a junior member of a very much in minority party, she wouldn’t get many chances to ram anything down anything.

Leave Sarah alone!

Like I already said, if she won’t do it, then I have no reason to not believe she is the one.

Blake on November 7, 2008 at 1:01 PM

A piece of me would like to think that JMac or Salter bitched her out last night and told her to go on TV and clean up the mess she made.

Illinidiva on November 7, 2008 at 12:04 PM

This is the best explanation I’ve read. I still wouldn’t touch her with a 10′ pole, she may as well go back to shining apples for Katie Couric.

Ditto for that a-hole Steve Schmidt.

Palin is a strong voice for conservatism. People in the party are drawn to her because conservatism hasn’t been represented in Washington since 1992.

She is the new face for the party. We must not throw other new faces under the bus just because we love her so much. Others will be needed such as Jindal, and yes….Romney. He must play a roll (not as pres though). We are getting rid of the country club check pants GOP. This is the grass roots building time folks. Lets get started!!

portlandon on November 7, 2008 at 1:03 PM

I’ve read/heard in other places some people say that Wallace is a decent person, and that she wouldn’t do this. Obviously, I don’t know her. I hope that if it’s not her (though redstate is standing by the story that it’s her and Schmidt) that she doesn’t go down for this. It’s just like Palin, if she’s innocent in all of this clothing stuff (and I think – or maybe I just hope – that she probably is) she doesn’t deserve to have the RNC show up on her doorstep accusing her of stealing stuff (I noticed that in the interview Wallace didn’t refute the story that the RNC is going up to conduct an audit).

I personally hope that the decent people, whoever they are, in all of this come out ok. I also hope that Palin stays above all of this in her Greta interview on Monday, and in any future interviews that she does.

meltenn on November 7, 2008 at 1:04 PM

See Palin knew South Africa was a country:

Moderator: Recent polls have shown a fifth of Americans can’t locate the U.S. on a world map. Why do you think this is?

SP: I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some, people out there in our nation don’t have maps and, uh, I believe that our, uh, education like such as, uh, South Africa and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and, I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., uh, or, uh, should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future, for our [children].

This is kind of nice. A backlash against the use of anonymous sources, perhaps? If Chris knows who it was,..spit it out. Otherwise, I’ll be happy to let it taint Nicolle. Maybe this is the only way the media will finally begin to understand the harm of using nonreferenced sources. When one of thir own gets whacked, they whine.

LevStrauss on November 7, 2008 at 1:07 PM

I’m not trying to run down Sarah Palin, but if we elect someone who doesn’t have enough experience, just on their biography and ideology, we are no better than the Obamabots. Ronald Reagan was a good President, but he wasn’t ready in 1968. And Sarah Palin isn’t even as experienced as Reagan was in 68.

Speedwagon82 on November 7, 2008 at 1:07 PM

If Nicole Wallace was the leaker too bad she couldn’t run McCain’s campaign as well as she can lie. But until someone “leaks” the names of the leakers this issue will stick with us.

I never understood the tizzy over the bathrobe bit. Are we talking about some bathrobe from Frederick’s of Hollywood? As I recall Cameron said something that implied that Palin’s husband was in the room so how shocking could it have been? I see people every day picking up their newspapers wearing their bathrobes – somehow I’ve survived that sight.

Innocent or guilty Nicolle Wallace still farked up Palin’s rollout. She is a collosal morons for botching the launch of a natural superstar.

indythinker on November 7, 2008 at 12:31 PM

Tell you what: She’s personally deny it when someone PERSONALLY accuses her. Until then, I see no reason for her to respond to an accusation which the accuser is unwilling to make publically.

BTW the word “country” has several meanings. For example if I say that I don’t live in the country, it doesn’t mean I live outside the borders of the United States. I could well imagine Sarah saying something like: “The people of Africa live in a country that is ripe for development” meaning not, Africa as a political entity but Africa as a land region. So let’s not confuse a grammatical error with not knowning that Africa is not a country.

Now the point is one could ask the accuser exactly what she said and how she said it. It’s possible that it is that type of grammatical mistake I just described.

But until the accuser is willing to face this kind of scrutiny and those type of questions, I say the hell with him or her. You shouldn’t get a free ride on slander and there’s no reason, absolutely no reason, for Sarah to respond until he or she does.

CanadianGuy on November 7, 2008 at 1:22 PM

Being in the Senate does something to the heads of Republicans.

It sure did something to McCain. As I wrote on an earlier thread: You can a take a Presidential Candidate out of the Senate, but you can never take the Senator out of a Presidential Candidate.

PackerBronco on November 7, 2008 at 1:23 PM

Oh, and has anyone thought about the fact that Palin’s parents are teachers. I would find it hard to believe that they would allow their child to grow up thinking Africa was a country, and not a continent.

On second thought, one day my sister, who was 18 at the time, asked my Mom how long it took for the eggs that were boiling, to turn soft in order to make deviled eggs, and my Mom was very good about teaching us kitchen and cooking stuff. LOL! Love to the sister who is probably reading this!

freeus on November 7, 2008 at 1:23 PM

Brazen liar… that’s my take. She got caught now she’s trying to spin free. I’d would be livid if Frum and Kristol came out and said I was the leaker and lying about Palin. I would be incensed and demanding opportunities to clear myself. Brazen liar…

liquidflorian on November 7, 2008 at 1:25 PM

Why are we assuming that ANYONE from the McCain camp is actually saying this stuff? It could just as easily originate with Obama supporters who SAY it came from the McCain camp.

Remember CNN and the tales of troops targeting reporters. Those stories were baseless, and CNN had a VP running around for two years spouting that stuff.

Femlin on November 7, 2008 at 1:25 PM

She can’t. She was one of the leakers. I have an inside source in McCain HQ. Read my post on previous page.

aquaviva on November 7, 2008 at 12:59 PM

I think it is Wallace, but I’m kinda skeptical of your claims. Who is your friend/ source? What did he/ she do for the McCain campaign?

Illinidiva on November 7, 2008 at 1:25 PM

But the tension between the Palin camp and other GOP groups is likely to continue or get worse. Lawyers for the Republican National Committee are heading to Alaska to try to account for all the money that was spent on clothing, jewelry and luggage, according to The New York Times.

If true, Sarah should politely invite these weasels to her home, point at her piles of dirty laundry, and tell them to feel free to pick through and find those precious clothes that they wanted her to wear in the first friggin’ place.

Awesome! I like it, I like it! I really do!

Thanks for giving me a laugh and a reason to smile today!

Neither approval, nor skepticism. This about doing the right thing. As leader, you, ultimately take both the credit and the blame, Senator McCain. I reckon you must be completely exhausted. Still, I expect you to summon up sufficient energy ASAP to defend Governor Palin and denounce the cowardice of the anonymous character assassins. Couldn’t care less if you name names.

Oh…..I don’t imagine Palin is the kind of woman to stand for any of that “junior” bullshit ;)

Anyway….just some hypothetical fun

Carl Cameron said it was senior McCain aides and he’s been on every show on Fox so obviously his bosses signed off on it too.

Illinidiva,

Did you go to U of I (Champaign)? I graduated in 87.

Just curious. Seriously, I can’t reveal that. As I said above, I’ve told you what I was told (or asked about) and that’s all I have. I trust it 100%. You can make your own decision. Over and Out.

aquaviva on November 7, 2008 at 1:28 PM

“What kind of game are we reporters playing whereby people with potentially self-serving motives can place such lethal (but not 100% credible) stories on the public record – unproven, unchallenged, and unsourced, while the people those same reporters and more who broadcast the allegations connive in concealing the information that would allow listeners to decide for themselves how credible the allegations are?”

Fixed.

The answer is that reporters are mostly muckrakers looking to make a buck and they don’t care how they do it.

McCain’s too busy with his BBQ ribs.

Check out the bob and mark interview, and this story from ABC. The ABC story explains the context of the Africa story in, in my opinion, a pretty plausible manner. I think Palin’s better off leaving it to others to deny that story and the others, and stay above the fray. She shouldn’t stoop to address anonymous attacks individually.

Yep, I’m an Illini (’04).

Illinidiva on November 7, 2008 at 1:35 PM

I think that if someone asks Palin about the RNC audit she should say: “That’s awesome! Come on up! I asked that all this stuff be taken off the campaign plane before we left Phoenix (that’s per the Anchorage Daily News). They didn’t do that, but I think we’ve got everything sorted out now. So, maybe they can carry all this stuff back with them and save me the shipping fees.”

meltenn on November 7, 2008 at 1:39 PM

Waiting for Palin to personally deny that she didn’t know Africa was a continent, not a country….

…crickets…

indythinker on November 7, 2008 at 12:31 PM

Still waiting for Obama to deny there are 58 states, and Joe Biden to deny pretty much everything he has said so far…

I have no Jesus, either figuratively or literally. You idiots need to get off of this boolean way of thinking, that’s how you get two parties that explode government and you support one yet probably still think yourself a conservative.

LevStrauss on November 7, 2008 at 1:41 PM

He defended Obama more than he defends his own running mate.

RINO

oldleprechaun on November 7, 2008 at 1:41 PM

Sarah,

Have the RNC lawyers pack the clothing and jewelry into the luggage, have them sign an itemized list declaring they took receipt of said items, get it notarized, and send a nice hand-written thank-you note to RNC chair, et al., thanking them for the loaners.

Christien on November 7, 2008 at 1:43 PM

Unlike Obama, Palin’s story and life speak for themselves. She’s a true outsider and she isn’t an arrogant self centered ***** like Obama. Obama’s political career has been defined as a quest for power… Palin’s quest has always been to serve her constituents in alaska.

Palinpuma on November 7, 2008 at 1:21 PM

Yeah and if I asked a hopenchange type, they would give me the same lame answer, just change the names around and replace Alaska with Chicago or middle class.

LevStrauss on November 7, 2008 at 1:43 PM

One thing is abundantly clear, were it not for cowardly, disloyal, self serving weaklings the election would have been a lot closer.

The rush has been and is on to see who can eviscerate who the best.

This is the quality of our elites?

No wonder Gov Palin looks so good.

Speakup on November 7, 2008 at 1:51 PM

Lawyers for the Republican National Committee are heading to Alaska to try to account for all the money that was spent on clothing, jewelry and luggage, according to The New York Times.

That’s bull. Palin’s spokeperson said they have not been notified that anyone was coming nor has anyone at the RNC contacted them or the Alaskan GOP.

SArah asked for the stuff to be removed from the plane by campaign staff in Arizona. It didn’t happen and she was auditing it herself with staff yesterday. She doesn’t want the stuff and I doubt the GOP is going to taint their new star.

This is coming from the same ‘insiders’ as everything else. I didn’t believe that and I don’t believe this. The NYT cannot be trusted.

mainly because an honest person would take both claims and study them and come to the conclusion that Obama never did the things he campaigned on and Palin did

Hey, everybody, I just heard from a “washington insider” that Palin thinks Austria is a big island in the middle of the Pacific. But I can’t reveal my sources. You’ll just have to believe me. /s

But seriously, I’m still waiting for the LA Times to release that tape of The One toasting a PLA spokesman.

I just told you how to do it …

take Obama’s claims and study them against his record

and take Palin’s claim and do the same

its not that difficult really
