Video: “Governor Palin did nothing wrong,” says … Nicolle Wallace? Update: She’s innocent, says Chris Wallace

Submitted for your approval and/or skepticism. Either she’s not the backbiter Kristol, Frum, et al. insist she is or else she’s a particularly brazen liar, willing to slobber over Palin for the Today show audience while spitting venom at her off the record. Or, third option: She saw Palin’s GOP approval ratings at Rasmussen this morning, realized that criticizing her now qualifies as a sin against conservatism, and decided at the last minute she’d best use her time with Lauer to make nice. Mission accomplished, in that case.
Meanwhile, Randy Scheunemann once again rides to the ‘Cuda’s defense:
One top McCain aide came to Palin’s defense today. Randy Scheunemann, McCain’s top foreign policy adviser, who helped prepare Palin for her vice presidential debate, praised Palin’s campaign effort and intelligence.
“I’ve been working over 20 years in Washington and I’ve been around literally dozens and dozens of politicians. She is among the smartest, toughest, most capable politicians I’ve ever dealt with,” Scheunemann said. “She has a photographic memory.”
But the tension between the Palin camp and other GOP groups is likely to continue or get worse. Lawyers for the Republican National Committee are heading to Alaska to try to account for all the money that was spent on clothing, jewelry and luggage, according to The New York Times.
I sense some people have the impression that Scheunemann is an old friend of/aide to Palin and that’s why he’s defending her. Not so: He’s been a D.C. lobbyist for years and was a foreign-policy advisor to McCain before she joined the ticket. As far as I know, they hadn’t met before she came aboard. To believe she’s a moron, you have to explain why a guy like him — with no longstanding loyalty to motivate him and with his credibility inside Washington on the line — would defend her so assiduously if what he says isn’t true. Palin-haters and Trig Truthers will point to those Rasmussen numbers and claim it’s because he wants a role in her next campaign, but he could have just as easily said nothing about her, good or bad, and still been lined up for that (especially since he’s reportedly pals with Kristol, who’ll probably be one of her biggest champions in the media for 2012). Instead, he went to such lengths to protect her reputation that he nearly got himself fired from the campaign and alienated powerful people within Team Maverick in the process. That’s a long way to go for a “moron.”
Update: David Frum notes that Chris Wallace is defending Nicolle:
I just heard Chris Wallace on the Mike Gallagher show insisting that Nicole Wallace (no relation) is innocent and that my speculations above are completely wrong. I have a lot of trust in Chris. But if (as he implies) he does affirmatively know who is doing this leaking – should he not tell his viewers? What kind of game are we playing whereby people with potentially self-serving motives can place such lethal (but not 100% credible) stories on the public record – unproven, unchallenged, and unsourced, while the people who broadcast the allegations connive in concealing the information that would allow listeners to decide for themselves how credible the allegations are?

Who in their right mind would ever want to hire a former McCain aide?

this whole thing is silly. I’m embarassed as a GOP member.
your guy lost, deal with it. stop putting the blame on Palin. With that 91% approval rating, maybe if the base had been more enthusiastic about the pick, he woulda won some swing states.
you know what woulda made the base happy? if your stupid campaign had told John to go out there on National TV and say I’m against giving a $700Bn check to Wall Street. I guarantee you, the results would have been mroe positive than negative.

Maybe Scheunemann say what was going on and decided that it they were in the wrong.
People are strange, when you are a stranger and have no clue about you. they will lash out, bite your head off and move on if they think they can get away with it.
Sometimes, you have level headed people who see them circling for a kill and head them off.
I also think (my opinion) that many do not like Palin because she is female. I even had a few people tell me that they would not vote for her BECAUSE she was female and Palin would have been an excellent man….
You be the judge.

I think this Palin-bashing is largely the work of more liberal Republicans (read: Mitt Romney) who want to eliminate her as a threat during the 2012 primary season.

In Fairness we dont know if Wallace is behind the rumors. All the videos I have seen of Wallace she has been defending Palin.
The “Sarah was in a bathrobe” story smacks to me this is more a guy behind the bitching than a female. I dont see any woman getting upset seeing another woman anser the door in a robe as they have probably done that themselves.
Seems to me there is just some guy on the McCain team that doesnt like strong women.

Honestly Id fear attacking Sarah Palin if I was a GOP. Just look at Michelle Malkin, Laura Ingraham, Ann Colter, almost every conservative woman is solidly behind Palin.
Its like an attack on all of them. And the last thing we conservative males need to do is tee off all those conservative beauties. Hell hath no Fury like a conservative woman scorned !

how long till the gutter left starts a rumor that Palin and Scheunemann got a little ‘too cozy’.
jp on November 7, 2008 at 12:14 PM
Folks… this is nothing more than a symptom of the problem.
Palin is popular because she is not a part of the Washington crowd… the same Washington crowd which has destroyed the Republican “Brand” and lost the Conservative base.
They just don’t get how disgusted we are out here with the Beltway blindness… that we, the electorate, have spoken TWICE about their policies (both elections had low Republican turnout)… and so have to deflect blame onto an outsider… Palin…
Battlelines are being drawn… Conservative Vs. RINO… Media and Washington insiders against Palin and the Conservative electorate….
As we used to say in the Navy… Stand by for Heavy Seas…

The sad thing is that we have no idea whether or not Gov. Palin wants the nomination in 2012 or 20whatever.
She was aksed to run for vp and she said yes. She ran hard and did the best she could with what she was running with and against.
Has she given anyone a wink in the direction of future presidential politics?
It is awful what the media and some republicans have done to her reputation. It would be even worse if the woman doesn’t even have presidential ambitions.

joey24007 on November 7, 2008 at 12:19 PM
I have supported him since 2000, but I thought he made too hard of a push to be Dem-Lite. Given the approval ratings for Bush, if someone was inclined to look at issues in a lefty way, who would they rather have? The original or the cheap mavericky imitation?
YellowDawg on November 7, 2008 at 12:19 PM
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again :
I’ll remain shoulder-to-shoulder with Palin.
She’s a smart woman with ‘balls of steel’. Anyone that can accomplish the kind of meteoric political rise and success that she has is worthy of serious consideration for POTUS. It is my hope that she is the catalyst of a radical return to fundamental American philosophy. It is also my hope that she does not lose heart, despite the traitors around her, and that she seeks my vote in 2012+ – a vote she has already secured.
In contrast, Obama is fools’ gold. He has legally maneuvered his way into politics, spent millions of dollars broadcasting his gift of the gab in order to con the majority of the electorate, and now stands on a precipice of monumental failure. Sadly we will all be injured when he falls.
It is our job as Americans to do everything we can to engage in damage control.
LimeyGeek on November 7, 2008 at 12:20 PM
During the markandbob interview, she would not say “no” to taking over stevens senate seat; and she hedged when asked about 2012.
So it’s up in the air. I think she should stay governor till 2012 and if she can get more good experience up there – and prove her mettle especially during this economic mess Obama is gonna bring, then run for President.

I just saw this on Drudge. I think it’s great. O’Reilly must be pissed… That idiot fanned the flames of this nonsense allowing Carl Cameron to go on and on about some unnamed McCain staffer’s assertions (an individual that Michelle has rightfully label a “coward”). So after O’Reilly takes considerable heat from his fair-minded viewers, he tries to explain it away as “news” and “fair reporting” (Laura Ingraham spanked him on this last night), he goes on about how he has “invited Governor Palin to come on the Factor” to set the record straight.
F.U. Bill. Greta kicked your ass.
D2Boston on November 7, 2008 at 12:22 PM
all it takes is an “anonaymous” source combined with the reports already that while prepping for the debates they became ‘close’.
That kinda crap will definitely be suggested in 2012 by the Kitty Kelly types at a minimum. but the radical feminist, who knows. Palin makes them completely unhinged.

I seriously don’t get your issue with me. People are talking about her lasciviously answering the door to two male advisers in her (gasp!) bathrobe or towel, and you’re attacking me for connecting the dots and seeing the picture the crapstream media is trying to paint of her?
They’re already setting up that she uses her sexuality as a weapon because she’s too dumb to do anything else.
Ever since I joined here, I’ve defended Palin, and I’ve helped on Team Sarah as well. I’m not bringing the “garbage” here, we’re in a thread about the garbage. I don’t see why I’m being vilified for being upset about what’s being said about her, and connecting the dots of disgust in that regard.

Wallace has always defended Palin in public, that was her job. And it certainly doesn’t do her any good to go on the record now smearing her given AP’s option #3.
Maybe she’s not the smearer (I hope that she isn’t, and that if she isn’t she comes out with her reputation intact.), but it wouldn’t surprise me if she was. Politics is a dirty business and you don’t get to be a senior adviser without playing in the mud sometimes. I’d like to think that if she was doing the smearing that McCain told her to step up and defend Palin and knock off the smears, or he’d call her on the carpet in public. Maybe it’ll all come out someday and we’ll know for sure.

It is SO mysognystic (sp?) to paint her as unseemly for wearing a bathrobe…how juvenile, stupid and petty to make an issue out of wearing a freaking bathrobe…if that is what the complaint, it makes the complainer look about 2 years old.
Sarah is a rock-ribbed conservative, and now that she has been so attacked as NO POLITICAN ever has been in modern history, she is battle-hardened. If she gets into another national campaign, it will be HER way, and she is going to be unstoppable.

Stay tuned for updates.

It’s good that senior McCain staffers are coming forward to defend Palin.
There was a link yesterday quoting McCain comparing Palin unfavorably to a British diplomat on his plane. (The difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull is that the pitbull bites but eventually lets go.)
I wonder if McCain will caucus with the Democrats.
What does this have to do with protecting our kids from Obama?
1) Focus on being true to the conservative message.
2) Select an articulate communicator for the message.
3) Put out the message all the time, and point out broken democrat promised/scandals/policy failures 24/7.
Right_of_Attila on November 7, 2008 at 12:37 PM
Too late, just like Noonan’s last minute reconversion. Wallace could have stomped on this when it first started, but now she sees her market value swirling down the bowl. Lack of loyalty equals no one returning her calls after her next application for a position on a campaign staff.

It seems they are just using Palin because it’s the only way they can get any attention for their agenda. I’ll bet she is glad to get back to the real folks in Alaska.
I’m really thrilled that I contributed to the GOP so they could do clothing audits in Alaska! I was hoping for something a little more substantial, like fighting voter fraud!

Exactly. People just can’t believe that a beautiful, successful woman could lead this country. They must do something to discredit her. Attacking her because of her looks, and possibly unethical behavior (she answered the door in a towel! gasp!) is just the start, but it borrows from the very false affair story that was thrown about. If you’ve got a beautiful woman, you get the whore story; it’s that simple. It’s an age-old way to attack beautiful women that are smart. The sooner we realize that fact the sooner we can combat it. If we bury our heads in the sand, however, well then we’ll have a repeat of what happened in this election. We must realize and anticipate more horrific treatment of Sarah Palin. Obama won and they’re still after her. They will not settle for anything other than utter destruction, and they will do it by any means possible.
The treatment of Palin and the election of Obama proved two things to me: sexism is alive and well in this country, and racism is so five minutes ago.

Aides claim that Palin ripped tag off of mattress … tag on mattress clearly states that it is illegal to remove in 53 of the 60 states

He never said he thought it was true. He was speculating on the motivation of the person doing the leaking.
You really should stop leaping to conclusions. You’ve been doing that a lot since Tuesday. Are you still hung over?

listen to the bobandmark interview.
And then ask yourself, why does someone have to confirm every idiotic rumor that is spread?
