Senator McCain, defend your honor

Baldilocks offers an open letter to Senator John McCain in response to the trashing of his running mate, Sarah Palin. As one retired member of the military to another, Juliette calls on McCain to demand honorable behavior from his campaign staff and act to end the smears and gossip:
Governor Palin committed herself and her family to your cause, moreover, to the cause of America, provisionally for four years. She did so with gusto–even after the Mainstream Media saw fit to go after not only her, but two of her children–and we, the Republican electorate, were glad for her decision. She nearly saved your candidacy.
But, now that Senator Barack H. Obama has become President-elect Barack H. Obama, the finger-pointing has begun and I would expect such from the average political candidate. However, sir, you are not the average political candidate. You are a retired US Navy officer and, on top of that, a Vietnam POW and a survivor of the horrendous accident on the USS Forrestal. You know what it’s like to be looking to your leaders in the worst of times and to have your subordinates look to you at similar points in time. You know about Faith, Loyalty and about Leadership.
Well, sir, it’s time for you to Lead again. Stop the dishonorable actions of your subordinates toward another–not just for the governor’s sake but for yours–because it is not the governor who your aides are dishonoring; it’s you.
I’m a little bemused by the intent of all this kneecapping gossip anyway. If McCain really picked a dolt as running mate — which he did not — doesn’t that reflect more on McCain than Palin anyway? And are we to believe that the woman who blew the whistle on corruption in her own party and negotiated a tough deal for a multi-billion-dollar pipeline doesn’t know the difference between a continent and a country, or which nations comprise the NAFTA trade agreement, a pact that has significant import for Alaska?
Juliette correctly states that the real damage done will not be to Palin, who will demonstrate the silliness of these smears. If McCain wants to show leadership, then he needs to interrupt his well-earned break after a bruising campaign and publicly take these gossips to task on live television. Issuing press releases won’t cut it. He needs to get angry and defend the honor of his partner, who did nothing but sing his praises as a hero for the last nine weeks.
John McCain is an honorable man. We don’t question that. In fact, we rely on it.

Bashing Republicans before the final election wasn’t enough. The news media is having to resort to tabloid style gossip to keep the bashing going. Otherwise, their beloved Obama will be at risk of coming under scrutiny.
Speaking of Obama: someone please educate me on how the black people are gonna benefit? They are all cheerful and happy, as if somehow they are going to benefit from the half-black president. I don’t get it. What do they think they will get?
jediwebdude on November 7, 2008 at 3:24 PM
Why should he do something that helps Obama?
Y-not on November 7, 2008 at 3:24 PM
Yup. It’s always been easier for him to stick up for the other side and not his own. Even his own VP-nominee, who worked her butt off for him.
hockey2k5 on November 7, 2008 at 3:24 PM
I worked hard for McCain even though he was my third choice for nominee, but let’s keep this real.
McCain has a history of throwing fellow conservatives under the bus…maybe Palin is just one more conservative he’s not going to stand up for.
I really believed, and kind of do still believe, that McCain is a man of honor, but this is making me…reconsider. But then my favorite class was evidence, so I only consider what I see/hear/feel/touch/smell and relevant inferences that logically emanate from the tangible evidence. McCain needs to come bolster up his honor/valor/courage quotient for me on this issue.
JustTruth101 on November 7, 2008 at 3:25 PM
Wonderful Post! And Wonderful Letter!!
Yes, this does reflect on McCain. Yes, he is a honorable American. If he doesn’t come out and defend Sarah Palin. Then that will tarnish his honor. Politics are a ruthless career. They can make you shine like a star. Then, if they don’t like you for having views for the People. They can hang you.

Good for Baldilocks, the one thing I would have added is that it is really hurting the Republican party that he say he is a part of. It just gives fodder to the liberals, his silence is deafening as they say.
Great letter Baldilocks.

Best I can figure is that the people backstabbing Palin didn’t like Mac tabbing her in the first place and are trying to portray themselves and competent and effective while being sabotaged by thier client and the fool he selected to run with him. That they made McCain electable but he botched it and its all because of her
I hate to break to them but it is backfiring in thier face big time, mainly because it isn’t true. They failed but losing the race in the face of the Obama juggernaut is not a strict condemnation of thier ability. The deck was stacked and it would have taken a miracle. This, however, is thier failure as human beings to trach her like this.
I don’t know what the hell McCain is thinking right now but its 3 days after the election. We political animals pour over this stuff and frankly looking for heads to roll. If Mac comes out on, say, monday and crusifies these people, alls well, right? He’s a little shellshocked for sure and probably exausted.

Whoever is behind the trash Sarah leaks and anonymous tips is a total blockhead. Trying to finish her off, all these stories have done is to rally every single breathing conservative in the US to Palin’s defense, just as she’s leaving town. Quite a display of polical power for such a newcomer. Makes her a lock for the ‘12 nomination if she wants it!

The only reason we keep saying McCain is a man of honor is because we have been basically forced to defend him since the primary ended. McCain’s honor is for himself.
And he has to know that it was only Sarah Palin that saved him from utter humiliation on Election Day.
Why does this kind of crap from him surprise anyone?

Some call me a fatalist. Although not enough so to imagine that we would vote away our freedom and prosperity.
But we have. I don’t think the comparisons to the Carter administration is correct, as the world is much different and more dangerous place than it was back in the days of disco.
We are on the verge of destruction, the only question is how much and for how long. The opposition party has a knack for deflecting blame, so at this point why give them a weapon they love to use.
I’m certainly no Atlas, and neither are you, but if we all shrug then the people might actually come to see what they have opted for.
Let it Burn.

Hey, maybe the other 56 million was right…McCain just isn’t up for the job. If he can’t defend his own in a loss, then he forgot what being a POW was like. I thought in the deepest darkest time of his life, others came to his aid…now a fellow fallen “soldier” is being wounded, and you are leaving them to their own.
Disgraceful, too bad you won’t read all of the excellent posts from so many that supported you…and now aren’t nearly so disappointed you lost.

I was never a fan of Sen. McCain and am now even less of one! How dare he allow people to talk trash about her and not defend her! That is unforgivable! She is the one that gave CPR to his campaign!
I can only imagine how happy she is to get home, sleep in her own bed, be with her children and maybe even cry a little. It looked like she sure wanted to during the concession speech.
I work and live on a military base in Pennsylvania and I was having a conversation with an officer in the Alaska National Guard and he said they absolutely love her up there! That just warmed my heart. We’ll not forget her anytime to soon!!!! We love you Governor Palin!!!!!

BigD on November 7, 2008 at 3:44 PM
So you’re saying that Gov. Napolitano, an early Obama supporter, would not be able to find a Republican to replace McCain who is at least as much a RINO as McCain is? I find it very difficult to believe that there are not Republicans from which she could and would choose who are at least at “RINO” as McCain.
At least McCain showed leadership on the surge. Frankly, he is not that liberal a guy. He’s pro-life, pro-growth, pro-nuke, pro-defense… Yes, he has gone against the party more than I’d like to have seen, but get real.
How does it help conservatives to replace a senior pro-life and pro-defense senator with a junior senator who is handpicked by Obama’s ally?

I absolutely love it that Palin is going on Greta rather than O’Reilly.
I would be willing to believe that N.Wallace made her comments in response to a McCain call but unfortunately it was too little and too late. The camnpaign should have jumped on this immediately. The delay has allowed it to spread all over and of course the Left is saying it is confirmation of all their previous slams about Palin. The Wa Po is even citing that idiot Sullivan’s response to the smears.

O’Reilly said that Palin would not do and interview, b/c the McCain campaign insisted he be there beside her. Same story for the folks working at CNBC.
Don’t you see the reason why? or is everyone of you just constantly burying your heads in the sand pretending like they didn’t think Palin issues.
mainmann on November 7, 2008 at 3:49 PM
Which part of Washington don’t you folks understand?
Our party needs to run, run hard, run constantly on smaller, less intrusive government, period. We need a leader who will come out and take ownership for the past decade of government growth and spending and say that it was a mistake and it ends right now. From here on out the party stands for:
- individual freedom and responsibility;
- a federal government that does only those things that the states and the people cannot do for themselves;
- fiscal responsibility and the absolute lowest possible taxes and regulation.
Will this resonate with the people after two to four years of Obama socialism? I don’t know, but I do know that running as a different version of the other guy isn’t going to go anywhere. By 2010 or 2012 it may be too late to get people to take ownership of their own lives but I don’t think so. I do know that after 10 years it will most likely be too late to reverse the march to socialism, one party government and eventually totalitarianism.
The time to start is now.

Sorry, I’m too old now to watch my country tank on some sort of misguided principle.
Whatever McCain’s mistakes during the campaign — and even considering all of the illegal and unethical stunts O!’s campaign and supporters pulled during this election — ultimately the voters are the ones to blame for the mess we’re in. They sold their votes for a $1000 check (or whatever the current promise is) from Big Government paid for off of the backs of people who are more successful than they are.
Y-not on November 7, 2008 at 3:51 PM
I spilled my bile on McCain yesterday. At this point neither he or his staff have much to claim in terms of integrity. They vetted Gov. Palin, then introduced her to the national stage insuring all Republicans that she more qualified than Senator Obama. I took him at his word and I backed the ticket. Then again, I like many at HA, I was a fan of Gov. Palin even before she was named to the ticket.
Leaks happen, but it is how they are handled which matters. Silence is confirmation. McCain and his staff have let this unnamed source story become media fact.
McCain has earned his reputation as a backstabber. A man of impeccable integrity and intellect, whose opinion I weigh most heavily, Tom Sowell noted McCain’s history of double dealing back in February of this year.
http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=ZDY2Nzg1NmJhNmYyYWRjZGY3N2E4OGM5NDZhYmI2ZGM
Politicians, as fallible humans, have a way of taking their greatest weakness and placing it front and center, then claiming it is their greatest strength. McCain’s claim to be a straight talker, is a prime case in point.
The man sickens me and I want nothing to do with a party he is part of.

Kai on November 7, 2008 at 3:57 PM
I agree that McCain probably knocked a couple of heads behind the scenes (I certainly hope he did anyway) since Wallace gave the NBC interview, and Schmidt denied the towel story in a phone call to Greta. Or maybe they’re just trying to save face since people are very suspicious that it was them.
The last part of the Newsweek story will presumably have all the stuff about the clothes, Palin going “rogue,” and the general implosion of the campaign. I hope that it doesn’t contain any new details(We already know their side of the story: that she went crazy and spent $30,000 beyond the $150,000 on clothes for Todd since that was in the highlights on the first day). After that comes out (Does that come out today?), and once the Sunday shows and morning shows cover it on Monday: this could all finally end if, as I hope she does, Palin refuses to go beyond what she’s already said in brief interviews to other outlets in the interview with Greta.
Defend herself sure, but only enough to point out how ridiculous the idea that she doesn’t know Africa is a continent is. Just say, “You know, I know I’m just a ‘hillbilly from Wasilla’ but I did actually go to college.” I hope she stays positive, praises McCain and the staff, and then takes Greta on a tour of ANWR and pushes that she wants to work on energy issues with Obama. I just think that makes her look like the better person in all of this.
meltenn on November 7, 2008 at 3:58 PM
As time goes on and we hear nothing from Arizona, this is going to be classified as “too little too late” and this will be what we remember from a major failed campaign.

I’d be ready to bite some heads off.

When has McCain ever defended a conservative Having Grahamnesty for a lapdog just reinforces the reason why he could never be elected president. Without Palin, this would’ve been the biggest landslide in history; comparable to Reagan over Mondale.

I noticed that in Howie’s article too. Since when is Andrew Sullivan a “reliable source”? The man is crazy.

If/when Mac does come out and refute this stupid gossip, the MSM and femiharpies will just use it an a case of Sarah Palin having to have Daddy stand up for her, because she was too weak to do it on her own. Then they’ll say, “See? We told you so! She didn’t have what it takes.”
These are monstrous times we live in, and the Nazgul have only begun to spread across the land.

Saw bambi’s speach and thought wouldn’t it be fun to have a “uh/um” counter on this site. I counted in 15 minutes 119 uh/um’s. That is (if my math is right) 7.5 per minute. We all can watch it go up over the next 4 years in conjunction with our taxes.
I know, I need a life.

I have no doubt that Sarah Palin can and will handle anything tossed her way with steely determination while at the same time using her common sense and intelligence to take the high road with grace in order to take care of any would be detractors. In many ways she reminds me of Southern women who are taught from birth to show charm with a smile (and a wink), but can at the same time disarm you with rapier logic and intelligence when needed. She’s a strong woman.
My “main” problem with Senator McCain in this situation is that on the campaign trail, he was always anxious and immediate to quiet any discourse directed at President Elect Obama. Now he will not step up and do the same for a woman that not only energized his campaign, but has always been a consistent supporter of his honor and abilities. She also turned her life upside down for the past 10 weeks in order to do what she thought was important.
Whether she “needs” his help or not, she should at least have the appearance of his support.
