Ohio agency head accused of snooping on Joe the Plumber put on paid leave

The trigger was pulled late Friday afternoon to minimize publicity, but we’ll take it any way we can get it.
Good lord. Is justice actually going to be done here?
Helen Jones-Kelley, director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services and former head of that department in Montgomery County, has been placed on paid administrative leave by Gov. Ted Strickland.
Strickland said on Friday, Nov. 7, that he took the action “due to the possibility, as yet unconfirmed, that a state computer or state e-mail account was used to assist in political fund raising.”
“I have asked Inspector General Tom Charles to include this matter in his current, ongoing investigation,” Strickland said in a press release.
Is it S.O.P. for a governor to undermine an agency head he himself appointed by suspending them before an investigation’s been finished? If he’s moving this early to put out the blaze, he must be feeling pretty sure that where’s there smoke, there’s fire. Or, maybe, he suddenly figured out that this is now a national news story and he’d better make a move to turn down the heat.
The Dispatch, bless its heart, has filed a request demanding any and all e-mails sent by Jones-Kelley that reference Barack Obama and is being told they’ll have them shortly, so look forward to the last missing piece of the puzzle dropping sometime next week. Exit question: Should JTP still sue? He’s finally paid off his tax lien so it’s not like he needs the cash anymore.

“Paid leave” = paid to sit and watch Oprah for however long it takes to investigate this mess
She’s probably thrilled to get some paid time off and won’t have learned a single thing when she’s allowed to resume her job in a few weeks.

Taking the fall.
JellyToast on November 7, 2008 at 6:02 PM
My, how will she ever cope? Paid leave just in time to bask in the glory of “The One” being elected. It’s just a CYA time for the Ohio Dems, that’s all.
savvydude on November 7, 2008 at 6:03 PM
Paid leave? PAID LEAVE! She’s out the door- do not pass GO, do not collect $200…

Just saying.

So why hasn’t Jones-Kelley’s credit history and such been leaked yet?

My Dad used to be an editor at the Dispatch- he is proud that it is one of the few remaining Republican leaning papers in the country.

SOP yes, public servants are often put on paid leave during an investigation as to get them out of the office and prevent them from interfering with the investigation or intimidating potential witnesses.

I think we had better sniff that path all the way to Strickland’s office. Methinks he knows more than he lets on.

Yes, JTP should sue. Sue her and the state right now. He should also contact the ACLU and ask for some advice on this issue.
JAM on November 7, 2008 at 6:06 PM
Absolutely… assuming it’s the sort of thing one can sue for.
Has anyone volunteered to work pro bono for him yet?

yes, he should still sue. They understand nothing else.

Paid? I’m happy something is being done but paid leave is disappointing. Hopefully, things will snowball from here.
Sue, Joe. Sue!
tuffy on November 7, 2008 at 6:06 PM
In fairness to Governor Strickland (a Democrat), he did call for the head of the previous attorney general (who was a corrupt doofus). The previous Ohio governor (Republican) basically stood by and did nothing when corruption was found in his administration, and it really hurt Republicans in 2006. Strickland is smart enough to know to come down hard on people when they get caught with their hand in the cookie jar. You have to give him credit for that.
Outlander on November 7, 2008 at 6:07 PM
JTP should sue for sure! It’s time for a Republican to say I’m not going to take it any more!
Bullhead on November 7, 2008 at 6:07 PM
Let’s see – black, female. rabid dem partisan. If that doesn’t spell “get out of jail free card”, then spank my jug-eared monkey’s butt and call me O.
If they didn’t touch Sandy Berger for what all HE did, does anyone really think that this woman is going to be punished with anything other than a 3-4 week paid vacation? Heaven help her if she were a republican, though.
Wally on November 7, 2008 at 6:08 PM
Exit question: Should JTP still sue?
Answer: Yes. Perhaps I am being idealistic, but this suit wouldn’t/shouldn’t be about money. It should be about exposing the rot and corruption that allowed a private citizen’s personal information to be access for political purposes AND then “leaked” (more accurately “delivered”) to the press so that the citizen could be crucified.
Thus, even if the State wants to settle the case, the terms of settlement should not include a clause requiring all parties to remain silent.
Blaise on November 7, 2008 at 6:09 PM
I imagine there will lots of these ‘lone wolves’ acting on behalf of The One. Jeez, and they thought Bush administration invaded privacy. The Lady doth project too much, methinks.

Good, hope still alive that there is such a thing as accountability in government.
Yes Joe, sue Jones-Kelly, sue the county, sue the state, and sue any news media that made your private matters public knowledge. Give them all the smack across the nose they deserve.

ronsfi on November 7, 2008 at 6:12 PM
Exit question answer: sure, why not?
I’m not a fan of frivilous lawsuits but I don’t think this is unwarranted.
If nothing else, more public airing needs to be made of this issue, and maybe someone will think twice next time.
Riiiggght.
tru2tx on November 7, 2008 at 6:13 PM
No ya don’t, the woman got paid leave? This is nothing more than icing on cow dung, trying to sugar coat the problem does not equate even trying to correct the problem, fire her outright and credit he shall get.

…she invaded public records to secure information on a private, non-felon citizen with full constitutional rights…and you call this justice?
She’s on paid leave, for heaven’s sake! “I’m sure, my dear, that all of this attention has stressed you horribly…take a few days/weeks/months and go to the spa…while we make this go away….”
Justice would have been her being lead to the nearest state facility in leg-irons pending the outcome of a criminal invasion of privacy investigation…as less well-heeled and less well looked after perpetrators are treated daily….
…foxes investigating how one of their number got into the henhouse? Don’t buy it….
…maybe…maybe…we wrack our brains to be fair…but maybe the governor actually initiated the invasion, and he’s busy closing doors and sealing windows which might blow an ill wind back his way….
…anyone who counts on the good intentions of any politician, particularly a high-placed Democrat, is welcome to let their daughters date Bill Clinton….

Dusty on November 7, 2008 at 6:24 PM
Slight nuance here …
The Columbus Dispatch first issued a “Breaking News” alert that Jones-Kelley was being
sent on vacationput on administrative leave due to the JtP case. They corrected it a few minutes later to say that it was due to a probe of possible fund-raising using a state computer.Supposedly the Ohio Inspector General is already investigating the JtP records matter — this is an additional investigation on top of it.
Hopefully she’s toast, but I’m sure we have a farm team of corrupt Democrats in line behind her to take over …
GoHskrs on November 7, 2008 at 6:26 PM
It should also be about ruining her. Her career, her reputation, everthing.
JTP should call the ACLU, ask for their help and record it. See what kind of answer he gets…

On an emotional level, I feel the same way about the paid leave.
But, when I stop to think about it, I have to admit that it’s the correct thing to do. It gets her out of her job while the investigation is ongoing, and if the investigation doesn’t provide enough evidence for indictment (and possibly conviction), firing her or putting her on unpaid suspension could well be grounds for her filing a lawsuit.
Now, whether that investigation is going to be thorough and nonpartisan is another question…

Paid leave? It will probably be the same difference to her life as working. I doubt she’s very productive under normal circumstances anyway.
JtP certainly animated her dull existence. Yes, Allah, Joe should sue. And he should hang in there. It isn’t about winning in a way that brings Jones down. It’s about making them squirm enough to settle handsomely costing the state enough money that it never happens again.
A large settlement in this case is as good as getting the witch fired. The news will spread and the example will be made.

Sue. And Joe the Plumber should settle for an amount that, after taking into account (1) the lawyer’s contingent fee, (2) his federal income tax on the gross settlement proceeds, and (3) his Ohio income tax on the gross settlemment proceeds, gets Joe the net dollar amount that he wants. I played around with an algebraic equation last week, and I recall that I computed that Joe needs to settle for $1.4 million to net $300K after substracting the three items that I noted above.
I’ll post something tomorrow.
