Michelle: Why isn’t McCain defending Palin from the leakers?

Only two possible answers: Either he’s consumed with duties related to winding down the campaign and hasn’t found the time yet or he does have the time but is in no rush to debunk the smears, which he could probably do with a five-minute phone call to O’Reilly or Hannity. According to Mark Salter, his immediate post-election plans as of Tuesday night included grilling up a big mess o’ ribs. So there’s our answer, I guess.
The Foxies inexplicably decided to focus this segment on boilerplate about Oprah, so skip ahead to 3:30 if you’re only interested in the leak stuff. Then, after you’re done, watch Cuffy Meigs’s highlight reel of McCain talking about honor and respect. Exit question: How soon before Maverick answers the bell on this one? I’m expecting Monday.

What disturbs me the most is that McCain would have come out immediately to defend smears towards Obama. This does not inspire me not to cut his name out of my McCain/Palin bumper sticker.
carbon_footprint on November 7, 2008 at 1:35 PM
Is this a rhetorical question? Why isn’t the liberal defending the conservative?
Vashta.Nerada on November 7, 2008 at 1:36 PM
My question: why isn’t Palin defending herself from leakers?
Bottom line is this excellent human being is not national ticket material, McCain erred in picking her, and everybody knows it but the conservative base.
Is Palin/Quayle 2012 your first choice for real?

Exactly. McCain defends Obama far more than Palin.
Pathetic Co-Coward in Chief. Congrats on the new title.
econavenger on November 7, 2008 at 1:37 PM
Monday seems like a good guess. I can’t believe Cindy won’t spend all weekend nagging him to get off the stick and say something. She seems like a classy lady and certainly signed off on the Sarah pick from everything I’ve read about the selection process.
Get going Mac or you’ll be sleeping on the couch, buddy.
Y-not on November 7, 2008 at 1:38 PM
Why does this matter? Just another reason for Michelle to hate on McCain. Who cares.
McCain made Sarah Palin a household name and a conservative star. I don’t think he owes her anything. She’s a big girl and doesn’t need Grandpa to come out and save her. Stop treating her like some kind of Damsel in Distress.
rockmom on November 7, 2008 at 1:38 PM
troll, the conservative base is all that matters. you ‘moderates’ are scum.
right4life on November 7, 2008 at 1:38 PM
Question of the day.
Where are you on this, Johnny? Those of us who swallowed our pride to vote for you would really like to know.
thirteen28 on November 7, 2008 at 1:38 PM
McCain’s through. I don’t expect he’ll even run for another Senate term. He’s tired, run his last race, and doesn’t care anymore.
Palin’s a big girl. She can hold her own.
Ace ODale on November 7, 2008 at 1:38 PM
Could it be – his logic is a bit skewed perhaps on this – that he feels it “has” been repudiated and it is baseless – therefore he does not need to do anything.
That said, it would not kill him to stand up and defend the lady – since she defends him willingly enough.
kybowexar on November 7, 2008 at 1:38 PM
Before people go blaming McCain for not defending Palin, consider this: he probably knows more about her by now than all of you combined. Maybe he has good reasons for letting her political career die.
Big S on November 7, 2008 at 1:38 PM
That’s true, carbon. He was out there defending Obama from the smears against him, but he’s silent on the one’s involving his own running mate? Dirty pool, my friend, dirty pool. Its nice to see the Democrats welcome McCain back too and his ability to concede to the Dems, er, “mediate disputes”.
changer1701 on November 7, 2008 at 1:39 PM
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA…..
So from now on we should consult the Democrat base for who the Republicans put up for VP?
12thMonkey on November 7, 2008 at 1:39 PM
His silence has been deafening. Me thinks he’s hoping this goes away on its own because he realizies how much his true friends (dems) in the senate enjoy watching Palin being destroyed.

Michelle gives me a thrill up my leg everytime I see her. My God, what a woman!
dinkyjackson on November 7, 2008 at 1:39 PM
Sarah made an appropriate, limited statement when questioned about it… but in any decent business it is up to the boss (McCain) to step in when underlings snipe at his hand-picked lieutenant (Palin).
Cindy will make McCain do it.
Y-not on November 7, 2008 at 1:40 PM
The ultimate take away from this is that any moderate republican is dead to the voters from now on.

richardcamera on November 7, 2008 at 1:40 PM
McCain is a POS! He’s proven it with this; what little respect I had for him is long gone; in a way, I’m glad he lost!
I DESPISE Obama (PBUH) to the very core of being, because is, and always will be, nothing more than an Anti-American/Pro-Jihadi/Anti-Semitic/Anti-White Racist Marxist-Maslim Manchurian Candidate….I expect no better from him!
But at least, he comes out and defends his wife, and others.
McCain, all he ever does is defend his enemies, that are trying to destroy him, and this country.
This isn’t the first time he’s done stuff like this; he’s defended John Kerry against the Swift Boat ads, which were 100% TRUTHFUL, about that damn Traitor!
Screw McCain!
Palin will survive, and come out of it better for it!
McCain, justly so, is done in the Republican Party!
Dale in Atlanta on November 7, 2008 at 1:41 PM
Maybe the Mav picked her with the idea she would make a good scapegoat if he lost.
Maybe he does not mind the public perception that she lost the race rather than he.
Maybe he is being loyal to the nincompoops who masterminded his stunning defeat.
No matter the reason, this makes him look very bad.

Exit Speculation: Is Maverick scheduled for any Sunday Morning Comedies? That would be his best outlet for firing back at Palin-haters. Otherwise, others appearing will do so, if they can get a word in edgewise around all the O’Slobbering that will be going on.
If he waits until Monday, it’ll seem very weak, like “Yeah, what they said! That was bad!”
JamesLee on November 7, 2008 at 1:44 PM
McCain’s not a Republican.
Let’s understand this.
He picked Palin because he, or his handlers, knew he was as popular as rotting eggs to the base, and he needed something to get us going. Now that he lost, he doesn’t have any reason to stick up for her.
I’m surprised he’s being such a slug, though. The only reason I had any respect for him was his character, and I guess I was wrong about that, too.
12thMonkey on November 7, 2008 at 1:44 PM
Too late, already. McCain acted like an azz. Done.
I figure that McCain is really busy working on his next shamnesty to try and shove down our throats with the help of his new leftwing lunatic friends in the Congress. I bet that McCain tries to reintroduce shamnesty by March.
progressoverpeace on November 7, 2008 at 1:45 PM
Rockmom has a point. Mac isn’t back, as it turns out. Since the leakers seem to be the
lobbyistserr, campaign managers, they’re not beholden to him anymore. If he runs again, he doesn’t need them for an AZ senate race. By speaking up, in additon to appearing grandpaternalistic, he might lend credibility to the detractors, as he already complimented her in his swansong.I do like the post at Red State that I saw on Boortz and posted on another thread. Taking names and remembering them. Pounding those names for 4 years to the base and warning candidates to steer clear next time. Maybe they’ll get that signal?
EconomicNeocon on November 7, 2008 at 1:45 PM
Here’s the problem:
McCain respects black nationalists and 60’s Marxist radicals as mavericks. He sees Palin as a hated conservative.
econavenger on November 7, 2008 at 1:45 PM
It matters because just 72 hours McCain was the leader of this party and the future of his party is being taken apart by people on his staff. That’s why it matters.
CanadianGuy on November 7, 2008 at 1:46 PM
No need to jump ship. She’s got a track record of cleaning up the Republican party.
Ace ODale on November 7, 2008 at 1:46 PM
McCain probably voted for Obama.
aengus on November 7, 2008 at 1:46 PM
McCain’s silence is deafening. He has not come out to defend her nor repudiate any of the insane accusations.
He is indeed agreeing to these hateful character assassins.
He must be so angered with Palin, thinking she is the reason for his defeat. Anything the MSM say, he agrees with or tries to appease.
jencab on November 7, 2008 at 1:47 PM
What you say here is very true. And now she’s on the national stage because McCain picked her. If he did nothing else for Republicans and Conservatives at least McCain got her out in the public and she participated in a grueling dress rehearsal of sorts for national office.
She seems to be holding herself up just fine and if McCain just came out and said something then Sarah would look like she always needs some man to help her out.
JonPrichard on November 7, 2008 at 1:47 PM
So we’re supposed to respect McCain’s judgement? The only thing he did right in the whole process was picking her.
What else can you point to that was successful?
12thMonkey on November 7, 2008 at 1:48 PM
Nope, I do not. I tell you what I do know though. I pretty much know a liar when I hear and see one. One of the things I truly admired about this person is the fact she speaks like somebody with integrity and heart.
I have no doubt, whatsoever, that there are things about her that I’d rather not know – if I did, I’d probably not be thrilled.
Old story about the pastor who told his congregation that if they knew all about him, they not let him be their pastor. In addition, if he knew all there was to know about them – he would not want to be their pastor!
I trust this lady to do what she says she will do – from what I can hear and see of her. Think she’s perfect? Uhm…nope.
That is why I do not think highly of your conjecture. I believe the lady has class, smarts, and probably the heart of a servant and a fighter. There is a lot to admire there.
kybowexar on November 7, 2008 at 1:48 PM

I think Sarah’s perfectly capable of standing up for herself, and, thus far, as done so graciously and appropriately in all of this. She has, so far, stood by McCain and refused to really criticize staff (certainly she hasn’t criticized them they way they’ve slammed her). I think that he should stand up for her too.
They were the candidates, and they’re the ones who really took all the hits during the campaign. Even if all this stuff being said about her is true and he really hates her guts or something, you don’t abandon your teammate. One quick statement that he was happy with the choice, and that this is just staffers settling scores and saving their own skins would be appropriate.
And seriously staffer(s), have you forgotten Reagan’s 11th Commandment? You should be focusing your efforts on rebuilding the party, and not tearing down someone who could help in that effort.
meltenn on November 7, 2008 at 1:50 PM
Sensible people see this attack on Palin as just an attack by people who are irrelevant. Don’t be surprised that McCain doesn’t say anything. I’m sure these people still work with him.
Talking about irrelevant people, too bad the Oprah bit wasn’t cut.

I’m so glad to see on Drudge that Greta is interviewing Sarah Palin with the story to run on her show on Monday. Yesterday, when I watched Greta I thought she would be the perfect, fair person to do it since her interviews with both Todd and Sarah have been what I’d expect of a professional journalist.
deedledee on November 7, 2008 at 1:52 PM
One of the funniest moments of the campaign is when McCain was going on and on about the Palins. He even told the story about the plane (got it wrong) but that was okay.
He seemed to truly be enjoying himself and the re-telling of the stories about them. I honestly doubt he found some hideous secret about Sarah that warrants allowing her to be slammed in public.
He is not my favorite politician, but I honestly do not think he’s a back-stabbing sleazeball. (I realize he did give the Religious Right a chop to the throat, but hey, we probably needed it a bit…)
kybowexar on November 7, 2008 at 1:52 PM
I disagree with this completely.
First off, it makes him look like a fool for bringing her aboard in the first place. He wanted a semi-literate, whorish, inbred bumpkin as his VP, then? Because that’s what we’re being told now.
Second, just as a decent human being, if someone you respect is being pounded in the media, you should say something in defense. Don’t you think? He certainly didn’t have those objections when it came to Obama or his terrorist ties.

McCain is done with Palin. She was only on the ticket to attract social cons and evangelicals to a sputtering campaign. It wasn’t enough. McCain’s staff has been acting like high school thugs, and cranky old bastard isn’t doing a damned thing to reign them in because Palin can’t do anything more for him.

The guy may also be exhausted. I hope not to be working 18 hour days when I’m 72 years old. It was a grueling pace from Labor Day until Tuesday. The guy deserves a weekend off.
At some point McCain will resurface to talk about the campaign, but I’m sure he wants to get some perspective about what happened, what the future holds, and how any comments he makes might affect 2012.

Palin’s spokesperson has issued a generic denial.

Finally. I’d like to see Palin come out with her anti-corruption platform for a new GOP and become the leader of the party. I don’t think it will happen, though. She doesn’t have the gravitas.
The last thing the GOP should do now is put all faith into one “savior” and otherwise bury heads in sand. It’s time for a rethink.

stevo on November 7, 2008 at 1:58 PM
Fisrt of all, anyone who does not consider McCain a conservative has likely no idea of how to win a national election.
Second, I think there is a grain of truth in this. The selection of Palin created a political sideshow in which McCain’s judgement and integrity was questioned daily in print and on TV. He takes pride in those things, whether it is justified or not.
Republicans make up about 30% of the electorate. 0.91*30 = 27.3. A little math goes a long way towards explaining Palin’s overall negative favorability ratings.
Big S on November 7, 2008 at 1:58 PM
I like Cindy McCain. The rest of her family is spoiled. Maverick is a hero, but he grew up fast and wanting nothing. His daughters are chubby Paris Hiltons. It appears that they look down their noses at Sarah Palin.
I,on the other hand, grew up around and enjoy people like the Palins. I have never met anyone as great as I perceive Gov. Palin to be. She is truly an example of the America that should exist, and the best our national culture offers. Abe Lincoln, Andrew Jackson was of this kind of stock. Legend material.
Too bad the McCain’s are too above that. McCain was not my choice, but I was behind him. Palin was a huge bonus, and I hope to see her back as Romney’s VP.
Hening on November 7, 2008 at 1:59 PM
Michelle is absolutely right! These Palin smearmysters need to be outed and publicly named as quickly as possible, and then they each need to be raked over the coals and shamed. I want to then see each one of them issue a public apology to Sarah Palin for what they did here.
And I am also furious at McCain for not coming out and defending Palin, while going after these idiots himself. It is as if he is endorsing this public smearing of her. If he is, then he is an a$$hole of the highest measure imaginable, POW status or no POW status!

I agree with the various posters that Sarah Palin can defend herself. That may be exactly what McCain is thinking as well. For all we know, he’s called her and asked, or she’d called him and told him to just let it go.
It has been stated before (repeatedly by me even) that she will probably out-Thatcher Thatcher. Years from now, people will use Sarah Palin as the standard for a tough, fair executive who gets the job done. She will ask you to co-operate with her and help get to the goal or

This shows Juan McNasty’s true colors. He used Sarah to get the conservative vote, then used her like toilet paper. Actually, my first impression rings true now: he never intended to win; he threw the election to the Demos. If it wasn’t his intention to lose, it certainly was the RNC’s: the other sagging cheek of the American’t political rump.
Too bad the shame won’t stick on him; he’s a war hero that thought he could turn his back on conservative values while he called us his ‘friends’, like his buddy, the slimy dual citizen, Juan Hernandez. No se puede, Juans, no se puede…
That’s about as nice as I can be.

He didn’t want to win anyway and this was just a trick to get Obama elected, because he hates conservatives!!!!

Exactly. 2012 is a long ways away, and in the same way we didn’t know anything about Palin in 2007, we don’t know who’ll be the big names then.
However, we need to take a stand against the blanket abuse conservatives take in the media.
I can’t remember a conservative that wasn’t portrayed as an idiot and/or a hick in the media. Reagan, both Bushes, Quayle, etc., etc., etc., and now Palin.
She’s not an idiot. She’s not a hick. She’s not inbred. She’s a very successful governor of a very big state. We can’t stand for this trashing of conservatives any more.
We need to stand up.
