Video: Fox News drops another load of dirty laundry on Palin

Unlike the first clip, this one does corroborate some of the details in the Newsweek report — sort of. Newsweek claims Palin appeared to McCain’s aides in a bath towel; Cameron says it’s a bathrobe. It’s not clear if he’s lifting that story from the piece or if he got it from a source firsthand; if the latter, then there’s either one very determined person leaking to multiple news outlets or … it’s a full-court press.

Whichever it is, you’ll never hear the word “uncommon” uttered as pejoratively as you will here.

I assume this is a sign that Maverick’s headed back to the center, because if he thinks the base is sore at him now, wait until his cronies’ attempts to scapegoat their idol start percolating. The boss’s reaction is emblematic, I’d guess. Exit question: I wonder what Greta, who was chiding the media just 12 hours ago for trying to destroy the ‘Cuda, thinks of these little Cameron segments.

Update: E-mailers are claiming Romney people must be the leakers since Mitt’s the obvious beneficiary of smearing Palin. Two things about that. One, the dirt in the Newsweek piece was leaked on condition that it not be published until after the election. If Romneyites were looking to tear Palin down, the time to leak would have been before the vote to try to sabotage McCain and clear Mitt’s path to 2012. Two, some of this stuff — like the bathrobe story — would have to have come from high-ranking McCain staffers with direct access to Palin. Were there any Romney people that high up in Maverick’s campaign? If not, would people who were that high up be inclined to whisper about it to Romney people and risk them leaking it, especially after all the bad blood between the two sides during the primary?

Update: Ace reminds me that Politico quoted an unnamed McCain aide — probably Randy Scheunemann — two weeks ago as saying Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace (neither of whom is a Romney person) would be the ones trying to tear down Palin. Right or wrong? Read this pool report of a press gaggle with Schmidt aboard McCain’s plane on Monday. Twice a reporter asked him to confirm that he was happy with Palin on the ticket. Twice, no reply. Doesn’t mean he’s the leaker, but it’s “uncommon,” to borrow a phrase.

I love Palin but I don’t see how Fox or Cameron is to blame here. The fact that the McCain campaign was in disarray and that there was tension between the two camps is news in itself.
Bravesbill on November 6, 2008 at 3:10 AM

I disagree. If you examine the comments on this story you’ll notice a good percentage of the commentators are accepting the stories as true. Hence it will become part of the accepted wisdom that Palin doesn’t know the countries in NAFTA or that Africa is a continent.

But is it true?

I have no problem with people attacking Palin for things she actually said during interviews, but this is different. How can anyone know whether these stories are true or not? News reporters have to balance several different factors when using anonymous sources. Does the story itself serve the public interest (doubtful), do the anonymous sources have a personal stake in the story being aired, even if false? (definitely), can the stories be independently confirmed? (no).

It is the choice of Fox to give public airing to these stories. They’re not required to do so. In that they are being a mouthpiece for people who want to attack Palin but want to do so without owning up to it. If a staffer wants to go public, fine, I have no problem with that. If they want to air a vague statement such as “some staffers we talked with were unhappy with Palin’s performance during the campaign.” I think that is also fine, since that’s a statement of fact.

Where it crosses the line is airing specific charges (she doesn’t know Africa is a continent) that harm her reputation with no ability to confront her accusers.

That’s where Fox is to blame.

PackerBronco on November 6, 2008 at 3:44 AM

RNC lawyers going to Alaska to rummage for clothes. Seriously? Are they that stupid? if they do, they have to leak that NYT? Can’t they do it in private?

There was a rumour on Michelle’s site that bigwigs of RNC are trying to purge conservativefs from the party. Look what they did to Bachmann. Puttin two and two together, looks like the problem maybe more widespread. Maybe many in RNC do want to squash Palin so that she is not viable ever again because she represent the conservative wing of the party and they want to get rid of that.

Sounds like a conspiracy theory but keep on watching RNC folks carefully.

And what are the evangelical leaders doing when the future star of their base is being treated like this? Can’t they twist the arms of whoever is doing this to stop the bloodletting?

promachus on November 6, 2008 at 3:45 AM

Greta’s PISSED about all of this, too! She’s had enough, and even calls FNC out for their coverage of it. See two videos here.

All the specific charges just to go the extent of the rift between both camps which is newsworthy. Further, these charges are completely laughable and anyone with half a brain knows they are false. They’re just from disgruntled staffers who are looking for future employment and are looking to lay the blame anywhere else but at their own feet. I do agree that some of the charges like the whole bathrobe thing probably should not be aired, but then again they’re all over the MSM. Fox is kind of forced into reporting it.

Bravesbill on November 6, 2008 at 3:56 AM

I’m sick to death about Fox News, the Republican party, and everyone else whose getting on the “come together with Obamanation” bus.

Fu*k them … someone the other night said that the Republican party needs to clear out the garbage and get some young fighters in the game who’ll stand up … damn skippy.

Now I have to go .. have an early meeting with my accountant to figure out how we’re going to get every cent I have invested in this country OUT and put it somewhere where it’s not going to be re-distributed to lazy assbags who don’t work or pay taxes .. nothing’s safe anymore ..

I always said this country is full of idiots .. now I have my proof .. somehow Obama got elected.

God help us all.

I like Palin, but if everything in this interview is true, then she seems weaker than I thought.

However, not even a small fraction of accusations against her during the campaign was true.

I don’t blame Fox for reporting this (assuming they genuinely think this is real), but I wasted too much time looking into false Palin accusations the last couple of months to take this seriously. If the ’sources’ are so willing to talk, then they should identify themselves.

NORUK on November 6, 2008 at 4:02 AM

Carl Cameron is enamored of his ability to “make news”. He did it effectively against Thompson in the primaries and many here fell for it. He spreads and creates rumors to gain screen time. He is despicable and should not be trusted.

TBinSTL on November 6, 2008 at 4:08 AM

“I like Palin, but if everything in this interview is true, then she seems weaker than I thought.”

I have on occasion tutored children. Every one above the age of 11, no matter how dumb, knows that Africa is a continent.

There is no way that Sarah doesn’t know that Africa is not a continent. She flew to Kuwait for the troops for Christ sake. That would have taken her right over the continent f Africa. Furthermore, the “Continent of Africa” is a VERY COMMON expression. All this fabricated to TAKE DOWN SARAH.

It is obvious.

Geochelone on November 6, 2008 at 4:11 AM

Don’t blame Fox for reporting the news, blame the despicable McCain staffers who are trying to cover their asses for future employment. Blame McCain for letting these idiots get out of control.

Bravesbill on November 6, 2008 at 4:16 AM

I love Palin but I don’t see how Fox or Cameron is to blame here.

Well, I blame them. There is no proof that any of this is true. Reasonable people would have to assume that this is simply “cloak and dagger”.

I would be willing to bet that even Piper knows that Africa is a continent. It is impossible to NOT know this.

Geochelone on November 6, 2008 at 4:17 AM

I would be willing to bet that even Piper knows that Africa is a continent. It is impossible to NOT know this.

That is exactly my point. Fox is reporting on the story not to determine whether what the staffers said is true or not, its to show how big the rift is between both camps and how the McCain camp has turned nasty. Anyone with half a brain knows Africa is a continent which makes these staffers’ accusations ludicrous. It’s a bunch of sour grapes by bitter staffers who don’t have the sackular fortitude to reveal their identities. The leaks are not reported for their truth, but for their nastiness.

Bravesbill on November 6, 2008 at 4:36 AM

For the love of Mike you guys just elected a president who didn’t know how many states there are in America, told our former PM that “If he is so ginned up about it, why doesn’t he commit 20000 more Australian troops to Iraq” and a VP who thinks the U.S. kicked Hezbollah out of Lebanon and that Lincoln probably gave the Gettysburg address on TV or something.

saint on November 6, 2008 at 4:43 AM

All the specific charges just to go the extent of the rift between both camps which is newsworthy. Further, these charges are completely laughable and anyone with half a brain knows they are false.
Bravesbill on November 6, 2008 at 3:56 AM

I have to disagree. I see this as part of a general strategy to turn Palin into a female Dan Quayle. There’s a lot of people, even on this board, who are accepting these charges as being true. Remember the story of how Palin wants to ban books? Thinks the Earth is 4000 years old. Said that soliders going to Iraq were following God’s plan? Was not the mother of Trig? Should I go on?

This is part of that ongoing effort to discredit and marginalize Sarah Palin. The disgruntled staffers are contributing to it b/c they think it will take the blame off of them. Media pundits are airing it for a variety of reasons, some have to do with a beltway elitist attitude towards yokels from the West.

You say these charges are laughable. I’m not laughing.

PackerBronco on November 6, 2008 at 4:52 AM

There is no proof that any of this is true. Reasonable people would have to assume that this is simply “cloak and dagger”.

I agree. Disgruntled people trying to cover themselves – how better than to make a popular, well liked person look foolish. Blame all the shortcomings on her.

But, I’m less impressed by this supposed lack of knowledge on Sarah’s part, when compared with that idiot Joe Biden. After all, here’s a supposed “brilliant” (msm’s words not mine) man who has spent 1/2 his life in Washington, who thought FDR spoke to the people on TV in 1929!! And his is on video! NOT proclaimed by some unamed source!! Just one of many unintelligent comments spewed forth by our new VPOTUS! All he gets is “Oh… haha… that’s just Joe”

ladyhawke53 on November 6, 2008 at 4:54 AM

If Palin is really the reincarnation of Reagan as many here seem to believe she should be able to account for herself. All these cries of “unfair” sound remotely similar to the Fred!groupies and their excuses for him as he yawned through his campaign.
Not sure how MM gets that running for VP is serving the country. One must win first. If Palin can’t take her staffers saying these types of things, perhaps she should step up and leave them no room for petty criticism. She certainly should have prepped for the Couric interview.
I think that the base is looking for a reason to toss McCain under the bus and this is the best they’ve got.
Hopefully the party elders have more sense than some of the sentiments expressed in this thread.

Bradky on November 6, 2008 at 4:55 AM

I have a word of advice for that crack-pot team of McCain Staffers who have apparently NO CONCEPT OF VISUAL ESTHETICS.

In every speech McCain ever made on the trail we see his wife standing there like a mannequin Stepford wife OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Often she seemed bored. At least Vanna White on Wheel of Fortune got to turn letters and didn’t act like a robot.

McCain staffers are IDIOTS.

Geochelone on November 6, 2008 at 4:56 AM

You say these charges are laughable. I’m not laughing.

Laughable meaning absurdly false. If a person can’t figure out that the charges are false, then they probably are the gullible idiots who drank the Obama kool-aid.

Bravesbill on November 6, 2008 at 5:02 AM

I am finding it difficult to imagine Governor Palin wearing a towel. I demand proof of these charges.

Flea on November 6, 2008 at 5:04 AM

I call bullshit on the whole answering-the-door-in-a-bathrobe story for one simple reason: Sarah Palin has a Secret Service detail following her like a hawk. At the hotel, there would have been at least one agent by the door, if not inside the room. Her husband was in the room with her. She was so rushed, that only she could have answered the door?? I don’t buy it.

Since all of these stories are unattributable, the whole thing stinks of blame game. If the McCain staffers were so eager to sink their own campaign by starting these rumors before election day, what was the point of holding onto this ’story’ until now? Carl Cameron and Fox spinning this crap out as cheesy gossip just looks like they are pretending they never really liked her, but she was pretty, and they wanted to hang out with the pretty and popular crowd. Until they became unpopular.

Does Fox News want to Jump The Shark along with the rest of the MSM now? I really thought Carl Cameron was doing a good job until I saw this. What more juicy details does he want to spill? Do the maniacs at huffpo and Kos need any more ammo?

Dave in San Diego on November 6, 2008 at 5:09 AM

I am finding it difficult to imagine Governor Palin wearing a towel. I demand proof of these charges.

Yo nice visual. She had to GIRD HER LOINS.

Sarah, you Rock. Don’t let the jackals get you.

Geochelone on November 6, 2008 at 5:12 AM

It seems obvious that the quest to scorch Gov. Palin into oblivion continues, and continues from within the Republican party. I want to know who the perpetrators are.

For the life of me, I can’t imagine how it’s a problem that she appeared in her own hotel room wearing a towel. What, the VP is supposed to remain clean without ever showering? Is she supposed to walk on water, too? These guys are such prudes — or such prigs — that they can’t stand the sight of a middle-aged woman wearing a towel? If they were in her room and heard the shower, what the hell were they doing sitting there?

Carl Cameron has a responsibility as a journalist to filter out catty backbiting. How this constitutes “news” in any imaginable universe is beyond me.

The staffers who leaked need to be fired and permanently blackballed. Cameron needs to be handed the beat in Keakuk, IA.

I guess the Democratic party does not have a complete monopoly on morality-challenged arseholes.

philwynk on November 6, 2008 at 5:19 AM

Keep in mind that Fox is the media too, they are just as capable of spreading dirt as anyone. I don’t doubt there were camps within the McCain campaign who had their own favorites for VP and now that they lost a lot of people will try to spread the blame around. But that does not mean that any of this is any more than gossip and chatter from a reporter.

The media just loves this kind of thing. I think that we should take any news of this kind with a grain of salt.

Terrye on November 6, 2008 at 5:33 AM

I am re-registering independent.

And I am going to tell them that it is BECAUSE MCCAIN’s HACKS are trashing Palin.

I ADVISE EVERYONE TO DO THE SAME.

F-You McCain.

Geochelone on November 6, 2008 at 5:37 AM

I think this is just an example of the GOP once again losing their way. We lost, so let’s blame each other? Please.

I had first-hand experience with the campaign in a battleground state. The campaign was terribly disorganized and understaffed. I got so irritated when i went to the HQ, that I just quit going. I knew that if McCain lost, it wasn’t because of Palin. It was due to the mismanagement of the campaign, especially after the economic meltdown.

What frustrates me is that Palin is getting all the blame. Even if these things were true, it’s not why Obama won. Obama clearly had a well-oiled campaign machine that far surpassed McCain’s.

Jawinka on November 6, 2008 at 5:42 AM

I tuned out those three long ago.

Me, too.

The Africa discussion with Palin was apparently over the country of South Afica vs the continent of Africa…one could misconstue the chat any way one wanted to..these Republicans staffers need toilet training.

Let’s ask BO about Africa..he’s an expert on Kenya. He sent his cousin Odinga $1M in 2007-8 and advised him on campaign intimidation tactics so well that THOUSANDS of Christian tribesmen were slaughtered in the name of Obama. Those 2 Black Panthers outside the polling (nursing home) place in Philly are shades of things to come.

gracie on November 6, 2008 at 5:58 AM

Hopefully the party elders have more sense than some of the sentiments expressed in this thread.

The “party elders” need to be retired after the steady decline of the Republican party since Reagan. It is no longer conservative by any stretch of the imagination. That is why it doesn’t win elections. Conservative issues win elections. Witness the Marrage definition amendment in CALIFORNIA!!!!!

Sarah Palin is the strongest conservative candidate to come along in years and is by far the most electable. The crowds she drew far exceeded McCains and compared favorably with Obama’s if you discount the rock concert warm-ups.

The time to start is now to recruit some truely conservative cadidates for the 2010 elections because I guarantee America and the world will be sick of Obama by then.

davo on November 6, 2008 at 6:01 AM

A. Unfortunately, I think that Palin has probably been too damaged by the campaign to seek the Presidency again. This is very sad because we really need her. Placing the Republican party in Mitt’s hands is not a good idea as he comes off like a bad stereotype.

B. It’s clear that Schmidt and Wallace are trying to save their butts. Schmidt fancies himself the new Karl Rove, but he ran a godawful campaign. I don’t think that any 2010 candidates are going to be interested in hiring him. Wallace clearly botched the Palin rollout and I don’t think that anyone is going to be hiring her in 2010. It seems like Scheunemman really took over for Palin in October as her main advisor. He did a spectacular job preparing her for the debate.

C. It’s clear that Romney people are fanning the flames a bit although the main sources for the story are probably Wallace and Schmidt.

Illinidiva on November 6, 2008 at 6:05 AM

It is difficult to imagine that in this 21st century a campaign staffer and Carl Cameron would be so prudish as to be revolted and appalled by the sight of the candidate in a bath robe. Are we to understand that these staffers have never been with McCain early in the AM or late at night? How does one answer the door if one has just come out of the shower? Wet and robed. What is the best way to answer the door if one has just come out of the shower? Naked or clothed?

Excuse me? Are we Muslims afraid of showing a little leg or cleavage here? Who is this ultra-repressed Victorian, and what was his physical response to seeing Gov. Palin in a thick bathrobe? What was Carl Cameron’s physical response to imagining Palin so dressed?

These people are making themselves sound and look like morons in order to tar Palin. If the GOP ousts Conservatives or tries to tear down Palin, they’ll be looking for voters. This Conservative is backing Palin.

SilentWatcher on November 6, 2008 at 6:07 AM

Sarah Palin is the strongest conservative candidate to come along in years and is by far the most electable. The crowds she drew far exceeded McCains and compared favorably with Obama’s if you discount the rock concert warm-ups.

What many seem unwilling to admit is that while Palin represents the “type” of conservative people would like to see, she is far from being the strongest. Let’s face it – she is heavy on idealism and light on substance — sort of like Obama, eh?
- declined prep for Couric interview
- waffled when asked if people who bomb abortion clinics are terrorists
- may not know Alaska is a continent

Those are just a few things that should be troubling to the conservatives. But in their hurry to find the perfect conservative for the future they are taking anyone. If the Dems made the type of excuses/defenses of obama that the palin heads are making conservatives would go nuts and rightly so. But as a party you have to be willing to look in the mirror.

You have to ask yourself “If Palin was so popular and the marriage defense amendment won in Ca, why didn’t the GOP get better numbers in that state?”
It seems that many voters split their choice on that – which should be a message to the GOP.
Like I said, she is the “type” of conservative many want but she is not “The One”. My personal opinion is that “The One” is Jindal and he won’t be running until 2016 at the earliest.

Bradky on November 6, 2008 at 6:10 AM

Mrs. Palin needs to get back to her governance of Alaska and continue her good work. She should visible and appear from time to time with meaty interviews about energy resources and write and publish where she will be read by the serious. She does need to morph, rise above the fray that is beneath her now. She did solidify the base and inspire millions of middle class working folks with her virtuous conservatism. I can’t think of a more courageous woman in politics today and I will aways admire her. Once the Republican Guard can define its line of attack in 2012, they will call her. But she will respond on her terms with her team, if not then, in 2016. She will not acquiesce to 2nd fiddle VP.

gracie on November 6, 2008 at 6:11 AM

I don’t think this is so different from the kinds of things people used to say about Reagan when he first sought office. It took him a long time to get past the movie roles he played and the feeling a lot of people had that he was an idiot or whatever. Of course he was not.

But I don’t think you can blame silly chatter like this on the Republican party {that is a lot of people} or even the McCain campaign. I don’t doubt there were aides and staffers in the campaign who had their own favorites and they lost twice, first when their person did not picked and then when the election went to Obama. Plus, this is the media. I don’t care if they are Fox or MSNBC, they are all in the same damn business of digging up dirt and trashing it out.

McCain picked Palin. That choice was his. And if she is a poor choice then it reflects as badly on him as her. So, no, I don’t think he would go after her now, and the same is true for her going after him. She agreed to be on the ticket, she did not have to do that.

So, maybe we should just keep that in mind when the inevitable gossip and chatter is leaked by guys like Carl Cameron. They are just trying to stir the s***.

The election was lost when the markets collapsed.

Terrye on November 6, 2008 at 6:12 AM

Stay classy, ex-McCain peeps.

Palin didn’t lose McCain a single vote. She was just a convenient excuse for people who were looking for one not to vote for him, and the media was only more than willing to paint her as a stupid hick.

This is beyond disgusting. This makes me happy McCain lost, and that makes me sad.

Unfortunately, I think that Palin has probably been too damaged by the campaign to seek the Presidency again

The same thing was said about Sir Winston Churchill. He was hounded with cries of “warmonger” and forced to retire to paint and write books. But he survived and returned.

Not less we praise in darker days
The leader of our nation,
And Churchill’s name shall win acclaim
From each new generation.
For you have power in danger’s hour
Our freedom to defend, Sir!
Though long the fight we know that right
Will triumph in the end, Sir!

It remains to be seen how she will adapt to this disruption of her family and her life. I have high hopes.

Probably getting lots of pork and bailout$$$. Jindal has gotta look like he can run a state and Louisina is no place to start. New Orleans is sunk forever. AZCoyote on November 6, 2008 at 6:50 AM

Those in such a hurry to blame Palin for everything on Tuesday based upon her month or so involvement in national politics are deluded.

The declining trend started when Frist and Hastert talked big and delivered small. It could also be readily argued that when Trent Lott ridiculously suggested “power sharing” with the opposition that voters began questioning the point of choosing the traditional party of small government which began wanting to get along and be friendly with the opposition instead of representing their base. I remember well Sen. Grassley grinning like the Cheshire Cat at the prospect of ethanol subsidies (pork) during the president’s address on energy earlier this year. Add to that list Specter, Snowe, Collins, Jumpin’ Jim Jeffords, Chaffee, Grahamnesty, and other weathervanes looking mostly for pork over principles.

Contrast Palin’s phenomenal ability to fire up and inspire much of the otherwise lethargic base in little more than a month by reminding them of conservative principles of thrift, controlled government spending and getting government off our backs. It is no wonder the Noonans and the Wills, Chris Buckley and others whom have truly become more Hollywood than conservative. Clouded by their detachment from the grass roots which too many comforts and social-set isolation brings. The reason Noonan, Will, Buckley etc. see Palin as alien is because those three and other highbrows like them have forgotten what it is like to be practical.

viking01 on November 6, 2008 at 6:54 AM

Perhaps the real story here is she put here baby first. She didn’t do the typical republican thing and hire a nanny. She took a meeting with a baby on her lap. The horror of it all making a campaign flunky compete for the candidates attention with that child. A bathrobe on, Oh please, are these code words for we had to watch her nurse that thing?

I heard Krauthammer making an uncharacteristically illogical argument. He said Palin was through because she had become an object of ridicule. To whom has she become the object of ridicule?

So if the ridiculars laugh at their own ridicule, the object is deemed unacceptable. So if you don’t want to seem “out of it,” you must agree with the ridiculars.

Many on our side consider Pres-elect Obama to be ridiculous. How come Krauthammer does not declare him to be an object of ridicule?

Because of Washington/New York cultural imperialism. They attempt to impose their views by threatening to laugh at us. Again, for whom does David Brooks, Peggy Noonan, et al write for? Who is their audience?

As far as O’Reilly and Cameron, I am reminded of the town drunks in Westerns: “Dance, rummy, dance. You’ll get your whiskey. “

She was inexperienced and was trying hard to not say anything to screw up the McCain campaign. It is her staff and the McCain campaign who did her a disservice. Plus, even if she was that much of a moron, the McCain campaign shouldn’t have picked her.

Like I said, she is the “type” of conservative many want but she is not “The One”. My personal opinion is that “The One” is Jindal and he won’t be running until 2016 at the earliest.

Bradky on November 6, 2008 at 6:10 AM

It’s starting to sound like I have a vendetta against the guy. Please tell me exactly what is so special about Jindal. I just don’t see it. He strikes me as one of the thousands of policy wonks that work in DC. If his name was Bobby Smith, he wouldn’t be getting any attention right now as he hasn’t done anything yet…… Kinda reminds you of the slobbering over certain Messiahs… doesn’t it?

Illinidiva on November 6, 2008 at 7:08 AM

I have never been an O’Rielly fan. I think he tends to be vindictive. If Sarah Palin didn’t do his show solo, this could very easily be his way of saying I told you so. He makes outragious statements like, “Everyone knows an appearance on my show could have saved the campaign.”

I’m sure Bill sees it as a career stopper. Cameron though, is more of a straight shooter and I don’t think think would embellish. I “do” think McCain and staffers trying to save his image would air dirty laundry and embellish. And O’Rielly is more than happy to air stuff that buttrices his position.

This story, true or not is out there now and I think makes it hard for Sarah to come back on a national level. Just my opinion. I think she did much more than I would have considering the initial Trig propaganda and the attacks on her daughter Bristol. Really, her whole family. But the stage was set. Unlike Quayle, I’m proud the base stuck with her. I’m sick that images stick to Conservatives and not Liberals but that takes us back to what everyone is saying here that we need overcome the media.

In the mean time, I wish Sarah-Cuda and her family the best and pray they can get their lives back to normal.

I’m more disappointed in John McCain than Sarah Palin. If she really was so unprepared he should have picked someone who was more prepared. If she was prepared but mishandled, I would be upset too that the staff wasn’t doing a better job and protecting her. You cn’t get around the fact that McCain and his staff is responsible for letting the stories out.

Folks, we need to get back to true Conservative candidtes that we can trust. One of the posters here said one of the most intelligent things that the party needs to consider and quick. Closing the primaries in every state to Republicans.

hawkdriver on November 6, 2008 at 7:12 AM

I can’t remember the last time I agrred with Lanny Davis about anything. Probably never agrred with him until this morning when he said on Fox & Friends, (paraphrase), “Those from McCain’s campaign that are anonomously blaming Palin for the loss ought to be looking in the mirror.”

sdd on November 6, 2008 at 7:19 AM

For Krissakes, FOX News (at least O’Reilly & Cameron) are turning into TMZ. Screw McCain and his staffers. Screw moderates. I could care less if Palin could recite American Exceptionalism – she EMBODIES it. I could care less if she mis-spoke of Africa as a continent vs a country (though I seriously doubt that) – her heart is in the right place. I could care less if she could recite the NAFTA participants (though I seriously doubt this) – her policies and deeds embrace it.

She is the real deal, not a wonk. She is a conservative at heart, not a phony mouthpiece. I’ll take her with her funky, awkward speech pattern and limited knowledge of the world over Romney or McCain any day.

After “Campaign Carl’s” school-girl snitching last night, I’m done with Fox. Man, that was weak.

As for Scmidt and Salter, they both sucked. They ran an awful campaign, just awful. Seems unlikely they would ever run another campaign; and if they do end up on a GOP candidate’s payroll, voters will flee in droves.

james23 on November 6, 2008 at 7:27 AM

I love Palin but I don’t see how Fox or Cameron is to blame here

Really? The country still has no idea who the guy is they elected president and even fox is spending it’s time tearing down Palin (which, by the way, is a sign that the ruling political class don’t like her). All that bs stuff about world knowledge cameron quoted about her was ridiculous and is typical of the kind of people that are in power in the republican party and mccain campaign and the reason the party is becoming increasingly irrelevent.

Also, cameron is very passionate about this, what’s he got against Palin? Is he buddies with one of these anonymous leakers?

mccain and the republicans lost because to the middle of the roaders they appear in their actions not much different then the democrats but weak and unwilling to stand up for themselves. The republicans are afraid of the msm and allow themselves to be pushed around and demonized. mccain lost because he’s a middle left, washington dc insider and came off as a stuttering old man. It will be interesting to see how quickly he goes back to sucking up to his liberal freinds in government and the media.

peacenprosperity on November 6, 2008 at 7:27 AM

Sarah Palin was not only a threat to liberal elite establishment, she was also a threat to the stale status quo of a Conservative Party in totally disarray. She still is an “outsider” to all of those who are so full of themselves and their solipsism. This lady has more class than the “peggy noonans” and the rest of the elite media could ever dream of. The fact that McCain and even her own campaign staff didn’t know how to deal with some one who refused to toe the line of “political correctness” speaks volumes about how out of touch both party’s are when it comes to communicating with the electorate–(us common folks). She should return to Alaska with pride and tell the entire political establishment to go f**k themselves.

hawkdriver on November 6, 2008 at 7:31 AM

Well, it looks pretty clear to me. The establishment have sent this directive down the channels to destroy Palin. This is exactly the same thing they did to Huckabee. The reason is because they are trying to squash the Social Conservative leadership in the party. They have been trying to push the Social agenda off the platform for quite a while now and this was a perfect opportunity to push a little harder and a little further. Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani are their guys and Fiscal Policy is their only concern. To hell with the peasants and common man.

If the Evangelicals continue to stay weak and silent, the RNC will succeed in keeping them strictly as grassroots support organizations, which is where the RNC wants them. If for some strange reason, the Social Right decides to finally stand up and make their voices heard at the leadership level, we could be in for a real show.

jparks1972 on November 6, 2008 at 7:32 AM

This is a very stupid story. The “she didn’t know Africa was a continent” charge is plainly BS. Anyone with a fully functional brain could tell you that. Not that this will stop it from becoming part of the consciousness of smear artists all too eager to believe whatever absurd dirt they can.

Couldn’t they have had her throw in a “You betcha” and eat the still-beating heart of a moose after this Africa comment? I mean, if your stupid smear is going to miss plausibility, why miss it by inches? And don’t even get me started on this ZOMG Bath Towel!!! thing.

I agree with Redstate’s take — find these staffers and make them radioactive. I will oppose any candidate that hires them. No compromises.

Beatnik Joe on November 6, 2008 at 7:35 AM

One thing I do want to take back from my statement above. Or clarify. I wish she “would” prep like a mad woman and try next time. A walking talking political wonk with her personality and true American Spirit embodiment would clean clocks in the next election. We would get a better look at her through primary debates. And she would need that to assuage the fears she is ill-prepared or worse.

hawkdriver on November 6, 2008 at 7:37 AM

As I mentioned on the other Palin thread it is wise to remember that Bill O’Reilly got his big media break as host of the seedy gossip program “A Current Affair” which often sought ratings by creating scandal if none could be found.

Deja vu all over again.

Well I feel better now about losing. With backstabbing a**holes like this in Macs campaign, its obvious now we did not deserve to win. I dont care what spin I hear from this point forward, Palin was what got Mac close to winning, if these dunces cant see this, then its clear why they are losers in more ways than one. I dont know about you guys, but even if all these stories are true( which I highly doubt coming out of a Democratic Light campaign), just the fact they are being released should plainly send you a signal of these peoples character…its down right ugly and petty, I am glad they revealed themselves in this way.

I say, let the culling begin. Starting with all those in Mac’s campaign, they are part of the problem. We clearly saw with the marriage amendments that our country is not ready to go south, they just sent the Republicans a vote of no confidence by staying home or voting for O…who so ever does not get that message needs to be culled too, the message should be loud and clear and to miss it is to mean you did not get it and should get the hell out of our party starting today.

I don’t understand, How is this clear? It is far simpler to see CLEARLY this is disgruntled McCain getting his one/two in.

Noelie on November 6, 2008 at 7:40 AM

It is difficult to imagine that in this 21st century a campaign staffer and Carl Cameron would be so prudish as to be revolted and appalled by the sight of the candidate in a bath robe. Are we to understand that these staffers have never been with McCain early in the AM or late at night? How does one answer the door if one has just come out of the shower? Wet and robed. What is the best way to answer the door if one has just come out of the shower? Naked or clothed?

Furthermore we are supposed to believe that

1) Todd was not there
2) Sarah was all alone (no assistance either)
3) The secret service was on a lunch break
4) So anyone could just walk up and knock on her door no problem

AND
5) hears a knock (it could have been the National Inquirer) and just decides to open it dripping wet with only a towel.

Makes no sense.

The Powers that be ARE SCARED SHITLESS OF PALIN. We just elected a Marxist with no background checks, the market goes down 480, and they are talking about the way Palin answers the door. WTF

Geochelone on November 6, 2008 at 7:41 AM

Well, I blame them. There is no proof that any of this is true. Reasonable people would have to assume that this is simply “cloak and dagger”.
I would be willing to bet that even Piper knows that Africa is a continent. It is impossible to NOT know this.
Geochelone on November 6, 2008 at 4:17 AM

I think O’Reilly did make the point in the clip that a lot of this is back-biting. However, one assumes that senior McCain staffers did leak this to Cameron… So it isn’t like a truly “anonymous” source was responsible.

Still, there’s no question that these kind of rumors are going to sink Palin’s future in the party. Al Gore arguably lost the election because in 1999, Wired magazine mischaracterized his statement that “I helped bring about the internet” as “I invented the internet.” Can you imagine if Palin runs again in 2012? They’d have Tina Fey out full time going “Is Africa a country???”

hawkdriver on November 6, 2008 at 7:49 AM

He makes outragious statements like, “Everyone knows an appearance on my show could have saved the campaign.”

O’Reilly is really a feckless blowhard. This crashing, crushing attack against Palin is a dying gasp of a mortally wounded party of rinos. The left has now amassed an army of young people and blacks that would take decades to overcome because of the ineptness of the republican party. The signs of this were evident since before 2000 election and the dems took advantage and worked diligently to capture the vote and stack their bench.
Sarah Palin is human and she represents the “Joe-the-plumbers” of the world. The beltway crowd can’t stomach a conservative Christian family or a blue collar worker who may smell of grease or sweat. The cocktail party circuit is in for a big shock when the first terrorist attack hits and cripples the USA. God have mercy on us for the greed for power and money by those in or seeking position in government.

wepeople on November 6, 2008 at 7:49 AM

A few things:
Notice when they reported she didn’t know Africa was a continent, they were talking about “South Africa” and was that part of a continent, or part of the country. She just didn’t want to be “trapped” and understand that when ever “South Africa” they didn’t mean the south part of Africa.
*
Second: She was correct, they should have let her go, she did a lot better on the campaign trail then McCain. Her quips, and exchanges were the best of all four. She never made one goof while talking off the cuff…if was just the “planned” interviews where she was unsure, and quite frankly naive.
*
Third: Now it was snuck in that they bought “seveal sizes” of different clothes. And what woman doesn’t want to have her own look, so she bought other clothes…look at Cindy McCain, Michelle, Rothschild, all the women on the campaign, perfect clothes, and a lot of them. Stupid, foolish remarks. Come on, we all saw how she looked in Alaska.
*
Fourth, the most stupid: You are on a campaign, you are on a tight schedule, you are comfortable with who you are…an aide who you know knocks on the door, and you have just hopped out of the shower. You throw a bathrobe on and say, come on in, I am running late…big deal.
That is the crux, elitists who have no idea how the common person, with kids operate. When on a schedule, you do what you can, when you can…if she would have said “wait 20 minutes while I get dressed” the call would have been prima donna…the most foolish of all.
Yeah, maybe Palin should stay in Alaska, where obviously “real” people live…and we will never get an authentic American to represent us because…you have to never ask if South Africa would mean Southern Africa, buy to nice of clothes, answer an aides calling in a bathrobe (while taking care of kids).

right2bright on November 6, 2008 at 7:51 AM

The reporter that knew her best was Greta…a liberal at heart.
I could see the respect Greta had for Palin as the campaign wore on. I think she knew (with Greta mid-west roots) what it was like to take care of kids, and run as a VP. I will take Greta’s admiration, over some simpleton’s backbiting.

pugwriter on November 6, 2008 at 7:53 AM

If these stories about Pail are false, I expect McCain and/or Davis to come forward immediately and repudiate them. If not, I can only surmise the following:

a. The stories about Palin are true.

b. The stories about Palin are false and McCain/Davis are complicit in allowing lies to be spread about her for post election D.C. beltway acceptance.

It’s one or the other.

Fletch54 on November 6, 2008 at 7:54 AM

From the debate, Biden didn’t even know which article of the constitution governs the position of the VP. Raquel Madcow made ther statement that Palin got General McKeirnans name wrong too. She said McClellan. If Biden knew his name, he would have known that was a Quayle/Benson moment. So not taking advantage of that, I assume he didn’t know either. It’s not ever a level playing field. The sooner we get that, the sooner we overcome the media.

My God, he is a little whining baby…Hannity did it, Greta did it (several times)…O’Reilly, you are not the news, and quite frankly your viewers were going to vote for her anyway.
And you can’t interview half as good as Greta, but then Greta gets off her *ss and goes to the candidates.
So next time, get off your fat *ss, and see the candidates, they have a tighter schedule then you do.

right2bright on November 6, 2008 at 7:56 AM

FOX NEWS has been unwatchable for some time. Brit Hume and Chris Wallace are the only one’s with any integrity left over there. O’Reilly is the world’s biggest ASS, Hannity has never had an original thought, and Greta falls right in with Geraldo. Yuchhh!
The lost me a long time ago.
Now on the other hand, the bathrobe/towel stories will only concern those who already hate Palin. I guarantee there is more to the story than has been leaked, just like all of the hit pieces we’ve seen so far on Palin.
As for me, the thought of Cuda in a towel or robe, or washcloth, is not going to make me rush out and start blogging for Romney. Ouite the contrary…

It is always hardest on the losers.
Maybe rightly so because from a loss can be rebuilt something new and better; it cleans the slate of the old.
Regarding Palin or any VP-candidate on a losing ticket for the White House (Democrat or Republican): has the VP-candidate on a losing ticket ever surfaced again in national politics?

Palin will probably best used as fund raiser for the GOP. But I think she will slowly fade away like other VP-candidates that did not win – Joe Lieberman, John Edwards, Geraldine Ferraro and others.

I just remember that when this all started one of goals was to get rid of the Clintons from the national political spotlight (remember she was going to be the Democratic candidate). Well, the Clintons are gone. We should be happy about that.

If Sarah was not a threat this would be a waste of their time.

The one mistake Sarah made was to give the media the sound bite “If I cost McCain one vote, I am sorry!”
McCain cost McCain about a million votes, Sarah!!
Don’t say that! YOU GAVE MCCAIN ABOUT 10 MILLION VOTES!
I was at the Sarah Palin rally here In Williamsport! They said it was the biggest rally for a candidate in our history! That’s not taking votes away from the party!!
How many people were struggling with voting McCain before he picked Sarah??
I was planning on voting 3rd party!

I sent Sarah an email and I suggest we flood her with emails of support!
I’m sending her another one! I told her she was the reason my wife and I voted McCain! My 18 year old son voted McCain! It was because of her!!
Time for a bumper sticker “I voted Sarah”
“I voted McCain because of Sarah!”

The MSM didn’t seem to know Obama was running for President!
The MSM didn’t seem to know Joe the plumber wasn’t running for anything!
Lets talk about all the things Obama doesn’t seem to know!!
You know what??

I would rather have her in the White House than a Marxist Fascist who thinks our constitution is fundamentally flawed and wants to create his own personal SS!!!
Why don’t you unbiased journalists shake your head in disbelief as you report those kind of facts,, you morons!
They don’t get it! They don’t get it!
Bring it on!! Tell us more!! Tell us how Sarah kept putting her pencil in the sharpener backwards!! Tell us stories she ate her peas with a knife! Keep ignoring the real threat to our nation that is now headed for the White House!!!
It’s not going to matter!
I voted Sarah!! I didn’t vote McCain!!

From beginning to end, this whole election was about candidates taking advantage of the weak position that George W. Bush and the Republicrats in Congress put the party in as they bellied up to the trough and behaved like a bunch of drunken New Dealers.

I honor Mr. McCain for his service, and do believe him to be an honorable man. However, he was not the best person to lead in this election. The Republican Party has gone back to the same crap that they were running in the 60’s and 70’s…Democrap Lite. They want to be the party of the eastern establishment. As Ronald Reagan said in 1975, “Let them go their way.”

I finally begin to wonder if a new party is the only way to give conservatives a home.

Again, let me remind people of the outlook in 1976 right after Peanut Carter was elected. The mindset was fixed on Whip Inflation Now and endless hype of Watergate and Nixon’s pardon by Ford. Four years later didn’t come soon enough when Peanut was dumped for Ronaldus Magnus. Carter was mostly a media created media illusion who talked big and delivered hard times. Obama isn’t much different. A lot of illusions which Obambi has created cannot be delivered to the saps with outstretched hands. Carter took out Carter four years later Obama the glorified empty suit will probably do the same.

Palin has been rather busy lately. It is not unreasonable to consider that that questions get misheard and often get asked partially, are garbled or mumbled, or several media types are shouting questions over each other. Sometimes people mumble something sounding (over the din) like Affaka or Athaka and someone from Alaska, governing Alaska, used to hearing endless questions about Alaska answer the question as it applies to their home and workplace. BTW Alaska isn’t a continent! That’s part of the problem I have with Cameron, O’Reilly and whoever else is feeding the gossip train. They’ve become so scripted and sensationalist they’ve forgotten what it’s like to be authentically unscripted human.

Wow I go to bed and the all hell breaks loose
My utterly worthless 2 cents:
McCain ran a lousy campaign all by himself- with old GOP hacks and a Rove wanabee.
Palin excited the base, otherwise we would have 270 Democrat reps and 61 Democrat Senators.
McCain has always had a huge ego and the idea that he is responsible for his showing will never occur to him- so blame Sarah.
Did she have faults- yes, she was too green but that is not always a bad thing- ask the President-elect(ugh)
The whole thing is indicative of unserious people looking to cover their ass for a crummy nominee-thank you open primaries.

I only voted for McShame because of Palin and if I had know what aholes were on his staff I wouldn’t even have done that. Those missing GOP votes were because people couldn’t stomach voting for a liberal RINO who hates conservatives and has done nothing to prove otherwise.

If Palin wants 2012, She needs to get herself out there and take it for herself. It is in her hands now. She has time to do her own damage control. The more she is out there, the more the mystique is lifted. She’s a fighter, she’ll do fine and I’ll be there to support her.

Folks, this is O’Rielly. I’ve cut and pasted a story from TMZ, where I think he might be more comfortable anyway. Part of the cut is him being interviewed on the phone about his political coverage.

“Here’s what’s interesting — O’Reilly doesn’t really have to attack if MSNBC and CNN throw softballs. Being somewhat neutral could end up actually looking edgy, and viewers like edgy.”

First, they admit MSNBC is biased and that O’Rielly being neutral makes him look like an attack dog. Hellllloooo!!!! That’s what Conservatives have been saying forever.

“One final thing. O’Reilly actually told us he kinda blew it with Bush. He said he never looked at the way Bush was handling the economy until it was too late.”

I heard this blowhard actually say this on his radio show too. One, instead of monitoring Bush running the economy he should have been watching Fannie Mae Freddie Mac and the Democratic Congress if he wanted to predict the impending collapse. Two, what an arrogant ass to sit there and smugly think he could have been the countries savior by being Gods sentinel on Earth. What a farging ego.

My point you ask, motivation! Why indeed would he run a piece on Sarah Palin like he did. II said above that he actually thinks he would have made a difference in their campaign by just gracing the stage with her.

I’ll still watch Fox. This just bolsters my distain for O’Rielly.

Even if you take at face value all the accusation about things Sarah Palin supposedly didn’t know, we’re still left with the fact that McCain appeared not to know that lining up against his own party so often, backing campaign finance reform, and insisting on amnesty for so long, would alienate his base and make him such a poor candidate.

He seemed not to know that with Obama, his character IS the issue, and that by taking so many legitimate concerns and associations “off the table” he was basically handing the presidency to a Marxist with domestic terrorists foreign terrorist fundraisers as pals.

Need I say that no matter how trivial or serious Palin’s shortcomings are, it all comes back to the questions of “Why did you pick her in the first place, Senator?” and “Why didn’t you staff properly vet her?”

I don’t buy these accusations against Palin, but even if they’re true, it reflects most poorly not on her, but on McCain and his staff.
