Video: Fox News drops another load of dirty laundry on Palin

posted at 12:05 am on November 6, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Unlike the first clip, this one does corroborate some of the details in the Newsweek report — sort of. Newsweek claims Palin appeared to McCain’s aides in a bath towel; Cameron says it’s a bathrobe. It’s not clear if he’s lifting that story from the piece or if he got it from a source firsthand; if the latter, then there’s either one very determined person leaking to multiple news outlets or … it’s a full-court press.

Whichever it is, you’ll never hear the word “uncommon” uttered as pejoratively as you will here.

I assume this is a sign that Maverick’s headed back to the center, because if he thinks the base is sore at him now, wait until his cronies’ attempts to scapegoat their idol start percolating. The boss’s reaction is emblematic, I’d guess. Exit question: I wonder what Greta, who was chiding the media just 12 hours ago for trying to destroy the ‘Cuda, thinks of these little Cameron segments.

Update: E-mailers are claiming Romney people must be the leakers since Mitt’s the obvious beneficiary of smearing Palin. Two things about that. One, the dirt in the Newsweek piece was leaked on condition that it not be published until after the election. If Romneyites were looking to tear Palin down, the time to leak would have been before the vote to try to sabotage McCain and clear Mitt’s path to 2012. Two, some of this stuff — like the bathrobe story — would have to have come from high-ranking McCain staffers with direct access to Palin. Were there any Romney people that high up in Maverick’s campaign? If not, would people who were that high up be inclined to whisper about it to Romney people and risk them leaking it, especially after all the bad blood between the two sides during the primary?

Update: Ace reminds me that Politico quoted an unnamed McCain aide — probably Randy Scheunemann — two weeks ago as saying Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace (neither of whom is a Romney person) would be the ones trying to tear down Palin. Right or wrong? Read this pool report of a press gaggle with Schmidt aboard McCain’s plane on Monday. Twice a reporter asked him to confirm that he was happy with Palin on the ticket. Twice, no reply. Doesn’t mean he’s the leaker, but it’s “uncommon,” to borrow a phrase.

The fact that she didn’t abort her fifth child isnt enough to excuse complete ignorance for me.

Seven Percent Solution on November 6, 2008 at 1:20 AM

Is there proof of this stuff?

capitalist piglet on November 6, 2008 at 1:17 AM

Yes, according to muyoso, Palin has never read a newspaper and doesn’t know the difference between a continent and a country.

You make your own decision as to which one is the moron.

jimmy the notable on November 6, 2008 at 1:20 AM

Obama, the unvetted share-the-wealth-er chuckles into his surreptituous KOOL at all of this Republican hara kiri idiocy.

The MSM disinformation campaign churns onward, sparing his skinny Marxist ass any inspection.

(May he trip over the new puppy as he sneaks back in from his smoke break …so MObama doesn’t catch him.)

profitsbeard on November 6, 2008 at 1:20 AM

Yet she cannot name a single newspaper or magazine she has read.
muyoso on November 6, 2008 at 1:02 AM

This is the pivotal point of this discussion where I point out why you are taking the approach you are taking with Palin.

You are shallow. You have no depth of thinking beyond that which you experience from your grandmas basement.

I’m going to try to enlighten you. I don’t have much hope for it to succeed, but be assured that I realize you are a complete idiot and I will not be angry at you for acting as such.

Courics magazine question was a gotcha question. The reason why, and now try to keep up dumbass, is that had she given a specific answer, Couric would have followed it with another gotcha question regarding a specific article or issue that had a specific story in it. This leads to a series of questions that has nothing to do with her qualifications or record as governor.

Palin should have pivoted to an answer about her record. For instance…..Her response could have been…..”Ya know Katy, amazingly of all the magazines I read, not one has reported on the work I have done in getting an agreement to build a pipeline to bring natural gas to the lower 48.” AND THEN SHE COULD GO ON TO HOW SHE ACCOMPLISHED SAID AGREEMENT.

I know that’s pretty deep stuff for a kiddie pool wader like yourself and I don’t expect you can keep up in the deep end with the adults.

Again with the ban hammer? I disagree with Muyoso’s assertion, (though it’s probably not entirely invalid), but his comment isn’t in bad taste. He’s only saying that not having an abortion is no reason to worship a politician and this doesn’t remotely approach a banable offense, IMO.

Anyway, just be happy Palin is at least a step in the right direction for the GOP. She may not be the most knowledgeable about national politics, but she has the right instincts, and that’s what’s most important. We’ll know in 4 years if she’s ready. No use wondering about it now. Even if she isn’t presidential material, she can at least play a valuable role in inspiring Republicans to return to limited government values.

What we should care about is that she shed her hawkish stance on foreign policy, with which the McCain has indoctrinated her.

To me, this is on par with when they claimed Bristol was Trig’s mother, as far as credibility goes. Or when they said she cut funds for teenage mothers when she actually raised them about 350%. Or any of the thousands of other BS stories that were concocted against her. Don’t believe a thing that is said about her by the MSM, because there are people in both parties who want to destroy her. She’ll just keep on doing what she does and rise above it all.

Hey muyoso, doesn’t this mean that The One doesn’t have any freaking idea which day of the week Wednesday is? I mean, SEVEN is a pretty big number. Same number as the number of continents, now that I think about it. You’d have to be a pretty big “retard” not to have a clue which day of the week Wednesday is.

jimmy the notable on November 6, 2008 at 1:33 AM

That fact that the McCain campaign not only couldn’t capitalize on what a gifted politician she is but also managed to manipulate her into situations that played almost exclusively to her weaknesses is infuriating and shameful.

God bless this magnificent woman. She just showed more force and stones in that impromptu Alaska press conference than McCain did in his entire campaign.

Thank God, at least, that Rush sees the truth about her and conveys it to his audience, not all of which get to see her.

muyoso on November 6, 2008 at 1:07 AM

There it is ladies and gentleman, muyoso’s argument!!

It goes like this, “I made an unsubstantiated assertion, so what. How do you know my unsubstantiated assertion I made off the top of my head was a lie? Maybe your challenge of my bogus statement is a lie, how do you know that?”

Anytime anyone makes an unsubstantiated assertion about another person that is, now watch this now Muyoso, contrary to everything we know of concerning the person in question, is immediately under suspicion until i get the evidence.

Sarah Palin is innocent of these accusations until someone goes on the record with proof. You obviously don’t care about whether or not she is being unfairly smeared because you are willing to condemn a person without evidence. You would have made a good candidate for a lynch mob back in the old west.

Axelturfer, is short for “astroturfers” which is a clever term for fake grassroots support, or something like that. Because fake grass is astroturf. David Axelrod is well-known (at least in conservative blogs) for making these efforts on behalf of the Obama campaign. He actually paid people to go out to comments sections all over the internet and pretend to be “real christian conservatives” who are now supporting Obama.

And so freaking what if you were supposedly here before me? Peggy Noonan was a Republican before I was born, but she backstabbed the campaign as well. Big freaking whoop. Ask around. I’ve never seen you comment here, while I know there are people who know me as steadfast and a frequent commenter.

Thanks for the lesson on Axelturfer,
-I suppose Noonan was paid by Axelrod to “backstab” Palin. -You just couldn’t see the ridiculousness of her answers during what was basically an interview of bland open ended questions.
-You didn’t see the Panic by the Campaign that’s just basically been confirmed by Bill O’Relly? i.e. They wouldn’t even let her do a one on one with Bill because they were afraid of more verbal mishaps. Ditto with the CNBC interview
-The Party will continue to fail with bats like you in it.

From here:

As late as Tuesday night, a McCain adviser said, Ms. Palin was pushing to deliver her own speech just before Mr. McCain’s concession speech, even though vice-presidential nominees do not traditionally speak on election night. But Ms. Palin met up with Mr. McCain with text in hand. She was told no by Mark Salter, one of Mr. McCain’s closest advisers, and Steve Schmidt, Mr. McCain’s top strategist.

John Edwards spoke before John Kerry’s concession. I am so angry with Salter and Schmidt for refusing one small speech to Gov. Palin after all she has done for them.

The whole Mccain campaign is frickin paranoid. If she get a prank call, that’s wrong. If she wears a bath robe, that’s wrong. IT’s clear that they don’t want to take absolutely any resonsibility and are hilariously turning every news item into some snort worthy speculation. They are the true divas.

capitalist piglet on November 6, 2008 at 2:24 AM

I do not understand all the anger against Bill O`
Reilly or Fox News. they just report the news and in my opinion do a very fine job of it. who else does it with any effort to show both sides. as far as Sarah goes she will get my vote in 2012. seeing her in person last thursday in Cape girardeau Mo. was a high point of my life.

kippyc on November 6, 2008 at 2:24 AM

I think……………… there will be more than one.

OK. Nicole Wallace, Steve Schimdt, Tucker Bounds, Rick Davis, Mark Salter.

I am ambiguous about the last two but kick the first three out. Definitely.

it’s the whole “ANONYMOUS UNNAMED SOURCES” bit that is so irritating.

NO ONE in the media touched John Edwards’ baby, not even BillO, becuase it was ‘only reported by the national enquirer’

NO ONE in the media has touched Obama’s Martinique Mistress, or who his cocaine dealer was, or if Obama ever dealt Coke, because it ‘hasnt been reported in the msm’

well now we have an ‘anonymous’ story attacking palin…. and NOW he runs with it????

Hey BillO, anonymous McCain camp sources tell me that Barack Obama is really a reindeer, destined to steal future Christmases from 2009 to 2012

battleoflepanto1571 on November 6, 2008 at 2:36 AM

I used to think Cameron was one of the few real reporters left.

What is he doing?

amkun on November 6, 2008 at 2:38 AM

the time to leak would have been before the vote to try to sabotage McCain and clear Mitt’s path to 2012.

Really? Unlike everyone on here, maybe Mitt’s people saw the writing on the wall and didn’t think McCain’s campaign needed any sabotage to go down the train.

PresidenToor on November 6, 2008 at 2:39 AM

It’s been longer than Connie since I watched O’Reilly. He summarily dumped on the Swift Boat veterans in 2004, and I smelled a rat.

Bill O’Really has lost me as a viewer. He’s become a ratings whore. A joke. A characture of himself.
Griz on November 6, 2008 at 1:23 AM

I know you meant caricature, but I love the creation of new words! :-)

It conjured an image of O’Reilly with wisps of smoke rising about his head and an odd hint of charcoal. :-)

My love for Sarah is deep and abiding. I may move to Alaska and endure months of darkness and freezing cold for her. Seriously, I would do it. I think it’s disgraceful the way her roll-out was handled and the way that she’d being treated now.

That said, I don’t think she’s perfect, and I think there was (obviously) tension in the campaign. We know that she was new on the national stage and therefore not conversant in aspects of national and foreign policy. We also know from people who have worked with her in Alaska, and from interviews with her family. that she can be stubborn (sometimes to a fault) when she thinks she’s right.

There are also a couple of instances where she seems to have to have bent the spirit of the rules (the per diems at home, for example). Given that, I hope that all this innuendo about the clothes (the implications in these stories that she intentionally ran up crazy clothes bills then stole clothes, etc.) isn’t true and that it was just some staffer gone a little crazy. If, however, it is true then somebody needs to give my girl Sarah a heads up that RNC lawyers may be coming her way to account for/inventory the whole wardrobe thing (per the NY Times article). I don’t want to see her go down for that, even if she actually did it (in a lapse in judgment). Anybody have any thoughts on how to get in touch with her through non-state of Alaska channels/email?

Yes, i think he is smarter than Palin. If you read any of my previous posts you will see that i’ve been consistent in saying that Out of all 4 people for to 2 highest offices. Only McCain and Biden were Qualified to be president. Of Course i disagree with Biden’s ideology, but he is qualified, IMO Palin and Obama were not, the difference is Palin made her ignorance more obvious, and the media pile on didn’t help.

Nicole Wallace should never be hired by another GOP member. Kick her out of GOP.

I do not understand all the anger against Bill O`
Reilly or Fox News. they just report the news and in my opinion do a very fine job of it. who else does it with any effort to show both sides.

The problem is that with unnamed sources the viewer cannot judge the veracity of the story. Is it a story about disgruntled aides lying about Governor Palin to shift blame from themselves? Or are they telling the truth about an airhead who was a danger to the country? What is the standard for the story?

The leakers have something to gain from the story: namely to move criticism away from themselves onto someone else. So they’re not disinterested parties. Thus we’re left with nothing but salacious gossip (NOT NEWS) about a public figure. Well, Hell’s Bells if THAT’S the standard let’s go whole-hog. I heard this rumour about involving Barack Obama, a sheep, and a turkey baster …

Think Fox will air that?

Until the leakers are willing to go on the record and deal with the heat that will come from some serious questioning in public, they should just go pound sand. The press should not be used to air their vendettas without consequence to themselves.

Actually, IQ wise Obama was probably the smartest one of the group. I also think he is and will be a poor leader. I think McCain and Palin are clearly more natural leaders (Palin more than McCain). Biden trails the pack by a mile. Raw IQ and ability to lead do not always correlate.

As for Palin’s supposed lack of knowledge, the incidents described easily could have been brain farts-like 57 states, FDR as pres in 1929 on TV or executive branch being article I. Maybe a staffer is twisting what happened or hearing something second hand. Without real substantiation, it is all conjecture. And given Palin’s success as a politician, she should be given the benefit of the doubt.

SAZMD on November 6, 2008 at 2:54 AM

All i gotta say is this….

Our next president is a horrible bowler.

That alone should have lost him Pennsylvania!!!

battleoflepanto1571 on November 6, 2008 at 2:57 AM

Yes, i think [Biden] is smarter than Palin.

Man, if after 36 years in the Senate he’s still the one-man gaffe wonder you gotta figure his stupidity is innate and immune to things like, well, reality.

PackerBronco on November 6, 2008 at 2:57 AM

From the reaction by ORilley, I am not sure he knew what the story was going to be about. I suspect he will be ‘clarifying’ his comments as well as the details of that ‘report’ tomorrow.

As for the staffers going after Palin. Clearly, the campaign ’star’ of the two of them was Palin. I clearly recall McCain the night he clinching the nomination. There had to be at least 50 people in that packed room!

No doubt having the vp candidate outshining the pres candidate at every event would be hard for the ‘professional’ staffers to handle.

Oddly, I just dont recall the ’staffers’ attacking any of the candidates after the elections in the past. Maybe I was just not watching that close, but it seems really petty at best. As for how much of what is being said is true, we will most likely never know.

Freddy on November 6, 2008 at 3:04 AM

I love Palin but I don’t see how Fox or Cameron is to blame here. The fact that the McCain campaign was in disarray and that there was tension between the two camps is news in itself. Cameron reported what he was told and he defended Palin after it. I’d blame the disgruntled staffer who’s looking to cover his butt so he can get another job in the future.

I agree that the Presidency is not an IQ contest. But someone running for President, should be able to articulate a position, given an open ended question. Half of the time they really don’t answer the questions anyway, they dodge it altogether by repeating their talking points. while sounding like they really are answering it.

The simple fact is that Sarah Palin was not able to do this with Katie Couric. I gave her a Pass with the Gibson interview, b/c i thought the idiot was trying to do a “gotcha” kind of interview. But i’m sorry no excuses for the Katie Couric debacle.

Proof positive that McCain thought the same thing, is the fact that With CNBC they wouldn’t allow her to do the interview alone, same with O’Reilly.

As I said over on Ace’s:

This pointing of fingers by McCain aides needs to stop. Conservatives needs to pick up their detached manhood (and womanhood), and to regroup. There is no time for wallowing. Now is the time to restructure the party, and take back its ideals, and to plan for 2010, and then 2012.

Wallowing in self-pity, denial, and infighting is what caused Democrats to lose in 2002, and 2004 after their Goracle lost. They focused and frenzied on stolen elections, and never took at look at their party so they were under-prepared. After 2004, they got their crap together, reformed, and came back fighting in 2006, and now this year.

Now is the time.

Not later. Not next year. It needs to start now.

Otherwise, this party is screwed until 2016, or worse.

The “lady” must have lost her touch about two years ago then because she did sweet FA for McCain this time around. You Palin haters are truly pathetic…..if I didn’t know better I would say you’re just another Alexrod tool.

“Of Course i disagree with Biden’s ideology, but he is qualified,”

Why ? Because he’s yet another lying, PoS lawyer ? He wanted to divide Iraq in three, he thought Hezbollah had been driven out of Lebanon , he lied 14 times in the VP debate and this makes him qualified in your view ? You might want to raise your standards a little higher !
