Video: Fox News drops another load of dirty laundry on Palin

posted at 12:05 am on November 6, 2008 by Allahpundit

Unlike the first clip, this one does corroborate some of the details in the Newsweek report — sort of. Newsweek claims Palin appeared to McCain’s aides in a bath towel; Cameron says it’s a bathrobe. It’s not clear if he’s lifting that story from the piece or if he got it from a source firsthand; if the latter, then there’s either one very determined person leaking to multiple news outlets or … it’s a full-court press.

Whichever it is, you’ll never hear the word “uncommon” uttered as pejoratively as you will here.

I assume this is a sign that Maverick’s headed back to the center, because if he thinks the base is sore at him now, wait until his cronies’ attempts to scapegoat their idol start percolating. The boss’s reaction is emblematic, I’d guess. Exit question: I wonder what Greta, who was chiding the media just 12 hours ago for trying to destroy the ‘Cuda, thinks of these little Cameron segments.

Update: E-mailers are claiming Romney people must be the leakers since Mitt’s the obvious beneficiary of smearing Palin. Two things about that. One, the dirt in the Newsweek piece was leaked on condition that it not be published until after the election. If Romneyites were looking to tear Palin down, the time to leak would have been before the vote to try to sabotage McCain and clear Mitt’s path to 2012. Two, some of this stuff — like the bathrobe story — would have to have come from high-ranking McCain staffers with direct access to Palin. Were there any Romney people that high up in Maverick’s campaign? If not, would people who were that high up be inclined to whisper about it to Romney people and risk them leaking it, especially after all the bad blood between the two sides during the primary?

Update: Ace reminds me that Politico quoted an unnamed McCain aide — probably Randy Scheunemann — two weeks ago as saying Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace (neither of whom is a Romney person) would be the ones trying to tear down Palin. Right or wrong? Read this pool report of a press gaggle with Schmidt aboard McCain’s plane on Monday. Twice a reporter asked him to confirm that he was happy with Palin on the ticket. Twice, no reply. Doesn’t mean he’s the leaker, but it’s “uncommon,” to borrow a phrase.

On Wednesday’s CBS “Early Show,” co-host Harry Smith discussed the ‘Potomac Primaries’ with Democratic Strategist Dee Dee Myers and Republican CBS Political Analyst Nicolle Wallace, a former Bush Administration Communications Director, who said of John McCain’s conservative critics: “The more that we see kind of the crazies like Ann Coulter out attacking John McCain, the better Republicans feel about their chances in the general election.”

This attack upon conservatives critical of McCain, who include Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin, Laura Ingraham, and others, was prompted by Harry Smith asking about Mike Huckabee’s continued support in the race:

Can’t you all see what is going on here………….?

It’s the start of the 2010 Congressional/2012 Presidential Campaign, and the MSM, along with FOX if they want any access to the Obama White House, want to pound Sarah Palin into dust……….

Why?

…………… because she represents the Conservative Base.

…………….. and we just can’t have any of them around any longer.

Mr. Obama raised and spent over six million dollars in this campaign………. that’s over half a billion dollars, money from all over the world against current campaign finance laws.

…………. What do you think he will spend on the next election, with the full power of the Federal Government, the IRS, FBI, State Department, and about a half million lawyers on the payroll and no Media outlet willing to call him on it?

Seven Percent Solution on November 6, 2008 at 12:45 AM

Actually I watched the clip for the first time and O’Reilly doesn’t come off so bad to me. On the other hand, Carl Cameron comes across very strongly as a network douche wanting to get his name in the press. Very misogynistic. And “sources say” and “insiders told me” … he should name names, apologize, or be fired. I would hope Sean Hannity like Greta would have a very strong opinion here.

Shopping and bathrobes?

Time to euthanize the media.

profitsbeard on November 6, 2008 at 12:47 AM

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot???

Why aren’t we treated to a story about how, after perhaps five days on the ticket, Obama’s most heartfelt dream was probably to have Joe Biden stuffed and mounted? Isn’t the fact that Biden was pretty much sidelined for the last few weeks of the campaign worthy of a Carl Cameron piece?

The McCain campaign is responsible for the terrible early impression that Palin got in the media. It seemed like, early on, the campaign pooh bahs gave ten talking points to Palin and would not let her utter anything else. And every sentence had to have at least one use of John McCain’s name, with two or three invocations of the name in each sentence optimal. They put a straitjacket on the woman and she looked to be babbling nonsensically.
John McCain left a lot to be desired as a candidate for president. His campaign for the presidency left even more to be desired. Sarah Palin saved John McCain from an old fashioned ass whoopin’.

I guess this caterwauling is to be expected from a losing campaign but it is really unseemly to go after Palin who did so much to make McCain credible again to so many disaffected conservatives.

thegreatbeast on November 6, 2008 at 12:47 AM

Greta said that the network should have never went with the story.

V15J on November 6, 2008 at 12:48 AM

I don’t think McCain has anything to do with it. McCain chose her in the first place to be his running mate.

There is a faction in the Republican Party that is anticipating the problems Palin will cause in 2012. She’s wildly popular with the base (practically guaranteed the nomination in 4 years if she runs) but completely unelectable in a national election. Hence the knee-capping.

RightOFLeft on November 6, 2008 at 12:48 AM

I was kind of suspicious of Schmidt from the beginning because he was one of Schwarzenegger’s guys. I heard him in a radio interview once with John Ziegler, who really gave it to Schmidt about Arnold’s abandonment of Republican ideals, especially on illegal immigration. Schmidt came off as a total douchebag.

You defended her when she couldn’t answer a simple question about what she reads. You now defend her when she doesnt know what the north American union is, or that Africa is a continent. I am sick to my stomach for saying this now, but Obama was 100% right. How COULD we elect a woman this dumb to be 1 heartbeat away from becoming president. That is truly scary.

Gawd! Who the frig cares about these little “expo-zay” stories on Palin? They are still trying to dig up serious dirt on her, and can’t, so they stoop to the lowest levels to find any miniscule, insignificant thing they can. Fox is the new MSNBC, officially.

I’m cancelling my satelite TV service tomorrow. I can’t stand anyone out there anymore.

I’ll 2nd and 33rd the “WTF is Fox doing reporting this backstabbing gossip” comments…Carl Cameron and his employer should be ASHAMED of themselves. If they want to report on gossip, I hear that there are boxes and boxes full of stuff concerning BHO in offsite warehouse spaces rented by the 3 major networks. Go do your “investigative journalism” tracking those down.

Senator McCain better make a statement, and soon, about these attacks on Governor Palin attributed to people that HE employed during his campaign for President. To not do so would not be living up to his persona as an honorable man.

It’s unfortunate that some of those that chose to associate themselves with Senator McCain have proven themselves to be less than honorable.

A question I would love to see our intrepid media look into is; is this just a couple of disgruntled campaign workers trying to cover that asses, or is there some bigger orchestration going on to keep this woman from trying to come back and play in the big leagues?

And I don’t get the feeling this is coming from McCain either. He picked her, it only makes him look bad as well.

Mr A on November 6, 2008 at 12:53 AM

These stories coming out about Palin are nowhere near as bad as what’s in that Newsweek piece about Hillary Clinton. What a train wreck THAT campaign was.

People need to take a breath here. Newsweek does this after every election and there are always some shockers. I remember some dish on John Edwards after 2004 that was pretty bad. I think it’s a stretch to conclude they are going after Palin here, or even worse that there re some mysterious Mitt Romney saboteurs out there trying to wreck Sarah’s career.

Besides, she’s a big girl. Didn’t she just prove that? She can take whatever dumb stories come out about her.

One is the Fox people like Shemp and Cameron who are eyeing the big chair now that Brit Hume is stepping down.

The other is the McCain hacks who know that no one wants to hire failures on to their campaign. So they try and tear down Sarah to get into the good graces of a possible future opponent.

If Mitt, Huck or anyone else in the GOP hires these hacks they should be slammed into oblivion.

Hey, muyoso, time for a little Q and A:

Question: What is America ’s first line of missile
interceptor defense that protects the entire United States ?

Answer: 49th Missile Defense Battalion of Alaska National Guard.

Question: What is the ONLY National Guard unit on
permanent active duty?

Answer: 49th Missile Defense Battalion of Alaska National Guard

Question: Who is the Commander in Chief of the 49th Missile
Defense Battalion of Alaska National Guard?

Answer: Governor Sarah Palin, Alaska

Question: What U.S. governor is routinely briefed on
highly classified military issues, homeland security, and
counter terrorism?

Answer: Governor Sarah Palin, Alaska

Question: What U.S. governor has a higher classified
security rating than either candidate of the Democrat Party?
Answer: Governor Sarah Palin, Alaska

According to the Washington Post, she first met with McCain
in February, but nobody ever found out. This is a woman used
to keeping secrets. She can be entrusted with our national
security, because she already is.

Carl nailed fred on his shoes. It was great stuff!

As far as Palin is concerned, Carl made it clear which information he was reporting on was from his sources and which were from his personal experience.

I think reporting the problems inside the campaign destroys the a$$holes who deserve to have their careers destroyed. Namely McCain and his incompetent staffers. Sarah has 4 years to improve her skills and make a name for herself in a state that is certain to be a focus in the upcoming debates on sources of energy for the USA. The insipid claims against her will be proven inconsequential and blame shirting by the guilty because she will acquit herself very well as governor of Alaska.

Sometimes I will be at someone’s house and they will have the news on and I wonder how I was ever able to consume this garbage. Getting pissed off at FOX is just a waste of time.

This just is more evidence of what Ed has been saying all day. We need to rebuild ourselves from the ground up. That includes ridding yourself of the naive assumptions that who you thought of as “our” talking heads are going to be along for the ride. Bill O. no way, Megan you bet (she probably has to have work done our her rear molars!). We have to be making news, not watching it.

We don’t need pretenders.
We don’t need ANYONE who believes the goal of the Republican party is to reach out to the independents or to the moderates. LET THEM GO! They are just static and the assumption that they were our answer is why we are where we are. McCain is the leader of this group. It is his mantra. To believe he was an answer or even a transitional pawn was simply naive. Rush said it best: walk across the aisle and you get punched in the face, reach across the aisle and you get your arm broken. McCain, if he were a true Republican he would have and could have DESTROYED Obama early on. Look at all the ammo Obama gave him! Let him go, we don’t need the McCain’s of the world and his LOSER staff shows it to you.

I always appreciate when idiots, appeasers and moral-less creeps identify themselves through actions like these. I appreciate it because it makes it so much easier. McCain approved of these tactics, period. Its CYA time of the status quo group. This guy sold us out on things like immigration, he’s selling Sarah and you out now. Move on.

Palin needs to go back to Alaska and be a great Governor. Imagine, If every state had one like her. Then after she does that job well, which she will, she can then become the Senator from Alaska. After that when she’s say 52 its the White House. Sounds perfect to me and, for the Country. A Great Servant to the people, that’s what makes us different from them. It’s not easy, that’s the path they take – OUR PATH IS THE RIGHTEOUS ONE.

I thank Ed today for his articles. They were timely as well he knows. Flake and MCCotter are shining stars of the future. They are right where they should be – waiting for all of us to notice and pitch in to help. It’ll be a grind but you got to like it! We lead, they follow.

Not get to work! You can start with your kids schools!

Thanks Michele.

From HEDGEHOGREPORT…. a guy who had been hyping the chances of mac taking PA spills the beans

***WHY MCCAIN LOST PENNSYLVANIA (not good) ***

From MDefl @ hedgehogreport:

“OK, so here it goes. By way of background, as most people know, my best friend who shall remain annonymous works for the Philadelphia Dem party and is very high up. He used to work directly for Rendell and still has interaction with him. During the John Street reign of terror as mayor, he was pretty much exiled. Now he is back in favor and is doing some things for the current mayor Michael Nutter. In the primaries, he held firm with his prediction that HRC would win by 9 to 11 even when the fawning press was claiming that the lead was moe. He was spot on. He also has access to internal polling and I won’t say more because doing so might out him.

Anyway, he pretty much consistently stated that the lead was +4 to +6 for BO but that he would tighten at the end and BO would win by 3. As late as Friday, that is what he said to me. Anyway, we go out to dinner with our wives on Saturday night and we are forbidden to discuss politics. He later tells me that he was dying to tell me some information and at one point hinted that I should go to the restroom with him. I must have been on my 5th beer by then because I don’t remember that.

Anyway, late on Sunday night, he texts me to call him at his office. It is 11:30 PM. I thought someone had died. Instead he tells me that he is changing his prediction to +7 for BO with some possible upside. I laugh and say no way. He tells me he is 100% certain of a BO victory by a minimum of +7. I bet him a steak dinner on who will be closer. I ask him what data has led him to the conclusion. He clams up and tells me that he will let me know right after the election. So, we all know that Obama won by 10 points in PA. Now, here are the specific reasons why:

1. Unbelievable turnout in AA wards in Philly. There goal was to knock on 100% of the doors in the minority areas of Philly on election day. Due to a lack of walking around money from the Obama campaign, that did not happen. Still, he estimates that they knocked on 70% of the doors, which is extraordinary. Some of that was blunted by increased voting in NE Philly and some parts of South Philly that are Republican. Obama won 83% of the vote, which is 3% more than Kerry in 04. Not great, but it could still be overcome in theory.

2. The Philly burbs killed McCain. As a matter of fact, my friend had trouble believing the polling coming from Chester and Berks county. These are dark red counties. He personally compiled the numbers twice and had another sample done on Monday so that it was not a Sunday effect. The Monday results were not as favorable but McCain was still running behind Bush by an average of 10% in the surrounding and second tier burbs. It was 15% in the Sunday sample. The 10% number is what became reality. It is hard to believe that Mac could underperform by those amounts. In effect, PA was finished not matter what happened anywhere else.

They did a poll on Monday afternoon to try and figure out what was going on and why people were breaking so hard for Obama. Here is what they came up with:

1. The Wright ad completely backfired and undecideds, especially white women broke heavy for Obama.

2. Palin, as it turns out was not popular in the burbs. Even voters who identified themselves as Republicans viewed her in a negative way and with Wright, this was also a main reason why the undecideds broke for Obama.

Don’t shoot the messenger. I really like Palin but apparently many people in my region do not.

My friend offered some analysis. He said, in the end, that the Republican party, as constructed today, no longer speaks to the suburban Philly people. They are moderates who tend to be pro choice and have no issue with gay marriage. While they are fiscally conservative, they were intensley put off by the Wright ads. That was also true in Allegheny County where McCain lost by 9 or 10 more than Bush in 04. From his source in Pittsburgh, it was the same issue. Wright and Palin. He does not even understand that since he thought R’s would be more conservative in SW PA. Also the coal issue did not resonate at all, even in counties like Luzerne and Lackawanna. Obama won those by margins much greater than Kerry. Mac did well in several very small counties but it did not matter. Bush lost PA by 3.5%, McCain by 10%.

My opinion is that the philly burbs will remain dark blue as long as the R’s who live here believe the national party is extreme. They currently believe that even though I think that is not reality. So Rush and Sean can say whatever they want about conservative ideals but I can promise you that it will not play to this crowd. I already know that they are easily led by the msm and I have consistently stated that the suburban philly Republicans were going to be a big problem for McCain. I never realized that the problem would be this extreme.

Also, the Dems obviously listed Bush as a major reason for voting for Obama but the late undecided voters hardly mentioned him at all. Obama won the majority of these voters which is a stupendous achievment and turns some cardinal rules of politics upside down.

Also, and this breaks my heart, Centre County, the home of Penn State, went blue. For a college town, it was always on the conservative side. It looks like that is no longer the case.

If the GOP is going to rebuild a coalition that includes Pennsylvania, they are going to have to develop a communication strategy and list of ideals that will appeal the the suburban philly voter.

Oh and 1 more thing on PA. Rendell’s whole, “I am disappointed in the turnout in Philly” was a classic head fake. He wants to run for Senator in 2010 and take Specters job, which would be ironic since he used to work for him when Specter was the DA of Philly. He would like for Specter to retire but will run against him if he won’t.”

:( sigh……. so it WAS close until the end. dangit!

I am sick to my stomach for saying this now, but Obama was 100% right. How COULD we elect a woman this dumb to be 1 heartbeat away from becoming president. That is truly scary.

muyoso on November 6, 2008 at 12:49 AM

YEAH, as opposed to BHO being the one with the heartbeat in the Oval Office. Go back to wherever and don’t come out for awhile…maybe like in 4yrs when our taxes have been hiked, our economy is limping along, our military has been gutted, and a couple of other wars have started in the middle east due to BHO’s choosing Israel’s neighbors over Israel herself so that you can again tell us how scary Gov. Palin would’ve been as VPOTUS.

Yet she cannot name a single newspaper or magazine she has read. Wow, you found a way to make it even scarier that she almost became VP. Thanks a lot for giving me nightmares before I go to bed. I won’t name names, but I know people with security clearances that Palin has never heard of, and they are dumb as bricks. It means nothing.

Here is your typical liberal argument, folks. “She didn’t know the countries involved.” And how do you know that? He doesn’t know that, he simply repeats the lie over and over hoping you will buy it.

Liberals don’t answer questions, they respond with an outrageous charge, only they change the wording a little so it sounds like they answered the question.

This guy/gal muyoso is supposed to think he has a good argument because he has made an assertion. He has no evidence to back up his assertion, just an assertion.

I don’t remember saying that I supported Obama, cause i certainly voted for McCain. That said, he was goddamn right about Palin being unfit for VP, as already known by the entire US population minus the religious who were enamored with her not having an abortion, and which is confirmed with these reports coming out from multiple sources. Good night, and good night.

muyoso on November 6, 2008 at 1:04 AM

Of course it is. Of course, their lie seems to fit with what we have seen of her, namely the Couric interview. Unless Palin addresses this we will never know, but between Newsweek and this, I would say that the burden of proof would be that these things didn’t happen, because there is certainly evidence that they did.

muyoso on November 6, 2008 at 1:00 AM

The Couric interveiw was a hatch job by Kati who deceided she was now part of the obama campaign. Palin played defensive not stupid. Unlike biden who is so stupid he freaked out TWICE when confronted by Barbara West and the other reporter in Philadelpa. Biden was more of an idiot in those interveiws than Palin ever has been.

William Amos on November 6, 2008 at 1:04 AM

Greta nailed exactly why HRC and Sarah were trashed in the media, they were threat, formidable ones at that, to the election of the chosen one. I think this may be why it might seem logical that Romney might be involved in the post mortem trashing of Palin. Still, I tend to think it is far more likely that this is coming from the McCain camp who are looking to scapegoat Palin for their own inadequacies. Palin became the credible MSM whipping post to knock down the last threat to their goal of electing Obama. McCain aides can find sympathy with the media if they knock her down.

This is the first obstacle to begin to climb out of the ashes for conservatives. If we do not stop this when do we start? I think we should pound Fox, with emails to turn the hose of Campaign Carl and Sheppard Smith for starters.

The only thing here that would be bad, if true, is the stuff about Africa (which has mow morphed into a comment about S. Africa which is not what Cameron said in the earlier clip) and not knowing the countries that make up NAFTA (which has now morphed into not knowing the countries that make up N. America which is not what Cameron said in the earlier clip).

Neither of these is verifiable, both are told by people who have every reason to be lying, exaggerating or whatever.

The bathrobe or towel story says more about the person telling it (Cameron’s breathless tone is laughable – has this guy never been around a woman?) – why would anyone be bothered or surprised by someone in a bathrobe? The temper tantrums stories are the same thing you hear about every politician.

The clothes shopping stories are simply childish.

I just take exception with people blaming Romney, and rather harshly in most cases, with no evidence whatsoever. McCain stabs conservatives in the back all the time, you don’t think his staff would do the same? Whether you like Romney or not, give him the blame for his own faults, not every bad thing that happens.

Take exactly what you said about me and turn it on yourself. You automatically assume its a lie. Why do you do that? You have no evidence of that. You do it because you want to convince yourself that we didn’t just vote for a war hero and a retard for the highest office in the land.

Senator McCain better make a statement, and soon, about these attacks on Governor Palin attributed to people that HE employed during his campaign for President. To not do so would not be living up to his persona as an honorable man.

I haven’t been following the comments, but I am surprised to hear that Romney supporters are attacking her.

Is it because they fear that she will become the heir apparent to the 2012 nomination? It would sadden me if that were the case. I want the best conservative we can get for 2012. I don’t fear Palin.

Initially, back in the late winter, I rejected her as the VP pick because of her inexperience. I think those failings were pretty obvious. BUT what wasn’t reported on are the qualities she possesses that cannot be taught. She is a pistol along the lines of Margret Thatcher and with some more seasoning in the conservative atmosphere of Alaska, I’d say she has a very good chance of becoming the first woman president.

LOL, so you voted for a man, who in, what you consider to be the most important decision you can make in a campaign, picked a VP who he himself believed to be unqualified? Why would you vote for such a reckless idiot who would put a “retard” a heartbeat away? Surely, only a fellow “retard” could possibly put her in such a dangerous position. Therefore, McCain is a “retard” and the only person who would vote for a couple of “retards” is a “retard” and you, having admitted to vote for McCain, must also be a self-admitted “retard.” But then, you are the “retard” who declared Palin as a “retard” and claimed that she doesn’t know Africa’s a continent and hasn’t so much as glanced at the top of a newspaper in her life, so I don’t really much have to listen to a single thing you say, since I don’t go by the word of self-admitted “retards” for my information.

muyoso on November 6, 2008 at 1:12 AM

Joe Biden makes Dan Quayle sound like John Adams.

The fact is, if governor Palin were a non-threat to the left, why the nonsense attacks? The answer is clear, they see her as a serious candidate down the road. Even Chris Mathews said so recently.

3 years down the road, when the presidential election kicks into high gear, this will be forgotten. There are a lot of things Palin can do to improve. Go hit talk radio on a weekly basis, give some speeches, go on Oprah and some of the Late Shows and be herself.

One last Q and A’s………….

“What is 2 + 2?”

Seven Percent Solution on November 6, 2008 at 1:14 AM

Many Palin opponents from her mayoral years, including Stein, who made a failed comeback bid in 1999, declined to speak for this story. One who spoke freely was her staunchest critic on the council, Nick Carney.

“The day-to-day was beyond her,” he said, criticizing her hiring of Cramer and her treatment of the incumbent department heads. “It was the barracuda in her that came out, that ‘Those guys were on the side of John Stein and I’m going to get rid of them.’ ”

Carney, part of an extended and prominent Wasilla-area family that has seen many children through public schools, said Palin’s high-school nickname came from her efforts to get more playing time on the basketball court.

“She wasn’t what she appeared,” he said.

Palin smiled and sighed at the mention of her old adversary’s name.

“I couldn’t do anything without Nick Carney griping about it. That was the nature of our relationship,” Palin said. “I could have walked across Lake Lucile on the water, and he would have griped about me splashing.”

This is the gist of DCMtomm’s “proof” that Palin has a history of not getting along with men when she enters their “circle.”

What do you think? Did he support his argument with this?

Joe Pyne on November 6, 2008 at 1:15 AM

n0doz on November 6, 2008 at 1:17 AM

I think it was Bill Kristol about a month ago that said McCain should fire his whole campaign staff …

They could not keep their act together more than a couple days at a time, gave anonymous interviews to the MSM so their day to day strategy was broadcast before it even happened … which indicates at best a general stupidity in the management of the campaign and at worst intentional sabotage of the mission …

So now they blame all the failures on Sarah … and all the wild accusations are immediately accepted as absolute truth without a single accuser being identified …

Carl Cameron is simply reporting what he has been told, which is his job after all …

John McCain should have followed the advice of Bill Kristol.
