Video: Fox News drops another load of dirty laundry on Palin

posted at 12:05 am on November 6, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Unlike the first clip, this one does corroborate some of the details in the Newsweek report — sort of. Newsweek claims Palin appeared to McCain’s aides in a bath towel; Cameron says it’s a bathrobe. It’s not clear if he’s lifting that story from the piece or if he got it from a source firsthand; if the latter, then there’s either one very determined person leaking to multiple news outlets or … it’s a full-court press.

Whichever it is, you’ll never hear the word “uncommon” uttered as pejoratively as you will here.

I assume this is a sign that Maverick’s headed back to the center, because if he thinks the base is sore at him now, wait until his cronies’ attempts to scapegoat their idol start percolating. The boss’s reaction is emblematic, I’d guess. Exit question: I wonder what Greta, who was chiding the media just 12 hours ago for trying to destroy the ‘Cuda, thinks of these little Cameron segments.

Update: E-mailers are claiming Romney people must be the leakers since Mitt’s the obvious beneficiary of smearing Palin. Two things about that. One, the dirt in the Newsweek piece was leaked on condition that it not be published until after the election. If Romneyites were looking to tear Palin down, the time to leak would have been before the vote to try to sabotage McCain and clear Mitt’s path to 2012. Two, some of this stuff — like the bathrobe story — would have to have come from high-ranking McCain staffers with direct access to Palin. Were there any Romney people that high up in Maverick’s campaign? If not, would people who were that high up be inclined to whisper about it to Romney people and risk them leaking it, especially after all the bad blood between the two sides during the primary?

Update: Ace reminds me that Politico quoted an unnamed McCain aide — probably Randy Scheunemann — two weeks ago as saying Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace (neither of whom is a Romney person) would be the ones trying to tear down Palin. Right or wrong? Read this pool report of a press gaggle with Schmidt aboard McCain’s plane on Monday. Twice a reporter asked him to confirm that he was happy with Palin on the ticket. Twice, no reply. Doesn’t mean he’s the leaker, but it’s “uncommon,” to borrow a phrase.

American Politics is in the gutter

Elizabetty on November 6, 2008 at 12:10 AM

This new treatment of Sarah Palin is not only more infuriating than the Trig fiasco, but frankly it’s pissing me off more than McCain’s loss, by a long shot. Him and his moderate, unprincipled, kowtowing GOP are taking out their spite on a good conservative. They took their shot on going left, it failed, and now they’re out for blood.

I am not happy Obama won, but I’m pretty damned happy that this bogus “right-wing” party tripped over its own feet and hit the ground hard.

MadisonConservative on November 6, 2008 at 12:11 AM

Once again, the Romney aides are harpooning any chance of Palin in 2012.

And sadly it worked. Palin’s image in “average Americans” minds is that of a tina fey cartoon character. Even Reagan in ‘76 was seen as ‘inexperienced — but with ‘gravitas’. The media, and now, the RINOS, have destroyed any chance of Palin having a future in national politics in 9 weeks time.

INCREDIBLE :(

Somebody warn Jindal, Pence, Cantor, & Sanford: CHOOSE ‘ADVISORS’ CAREFULLY!

WTF is wrong with you FOX, of all networks?

LEAVE SARAH PALIN ALONE, DAMNIT.

Capital Mess on November 6, 2008 at 12:12 AM

Not knowing what countries are in North America is stupid, Bill. I’m not saying she didn’t know (I don’t buy it, in fact), but you’re better off arguing that it’s the McCain aides trying to pass the buck or are lying.

amerpundit on November 6, 2008 at 12:13 AM

I know Sarah’s a classy lady, but man, I’d pay big bucks to see her slam these people in prime time. Big $$ :-)

hockey2k5 on November 6, 2008 at 12:13 AM

Palin was kind of ditzy. We made her into something she was not.

The turncoat campaign aides who should have their reputations ruined and be run out of the party…unless of course they are telling the truth, and if they are, they should make their accusations on the records. If they won’t state their issues on the record, they should not be quoted. Palin is being attacked, yet due to the anonymity of it, she has no ability to confront her accusers. And Carl Cameron is an unfair cowardly attacker. Get them on the record Carl, or don’t repeat it. He’s a smearmonger.

JustTruth101 on November 6, 2008 at 12:13 AM

And the thought of Romney as the candidate who is going to restore this party just doesn’t sit right with me. He has no emotion, he will not connect with the base — if he did he would have won this round, regardless of the media push for mccain.

Capital Mess on November 6, 2008 at 12:14 AM

Sarah…you have NOTHING to apologize for! You keep speaking for all of us hard working Americans!

2jazzie lane on November 6, 2008 at 12:14 AM

Well McCainiacs … since you’re cool with leaking anonymous bullshit ….

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/21/us/politics/21mccain.html?pagewanted=print

WASHINGTON — Early in Senator John McCain’s first run for the White House eight years ago, waves of anxiety swept through his small circle of advisers.

A female lobbyist had been turning up with him at fund-raisers, visiting his offices and accompanying him on a client’s corporate jet. Convinced the relationship had become romantic, some of his top advisers intervened to protect the candidate from himself — instructing staff members to block the woman’s access, privately warning her away and repeatedly confronting him, several people involved in the campaign said on the condition of anonymity.

When news organizations reported that Mr. McCain had written letters to government regulators on behalf of the lobbyist’s client, the former campaign associates said, some aides feared for a time that attention would fall on her involvement.

Mr. McCain, 71, and the lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, 40, both say they never had a romantic relationship. But to his advisers, even the appearance of a close bond with a lobbyist whose clients often had business before the Senate committee Mr. McCain led threatened the story of redemption and rectitude that defined his political identity.

It had been just a decade since an official favor for a friend with regulatory problems had nearly ended Mr. McCain’s political career by ensnaring him in the Keating Five scandal. In the years that followed, he reinvented himself as the scourge of special interests, a crusader for stricter ethics and campaign finance rules, a man of honor chastened by a brush with shame.

CanadianGuy on November 6, 2008 at 12:14 AM

I’m disgusted at the smearing of Palin by the GOP and Fox News. My wife and I both assert that we would not have voted at all if it hadn’t been for Palin being on the ticket. McCain is fortunate he had a drawing card in Palin for many of us GOP voters. It looks like the GOP is still the Stupid Party as it continues to shoot itself in the foot.

Newsweek claims Palin appeared to McCain’s aides in a bath towel; Cameron says it’s a bathrobe.

He may’ve mispoke. He said she was “wrapped” in a “bathrobe”. Maybe it’s just me, but you usually don’t say “wrapped” when talking about wearing a bathrobe.

The controversial George W. Bush-sponsored poll in South Carolina mentioned John McCain’s role in the so-called Keating Five scandal, and McCain says his involvement in the scandal “will probably be on my tombstone.” What exactly did McCain do?

CanadianGuy on November 6, 2008 at 12:17 AM

Her reputation has been damaged by this. I don’t know if she can recover. She was an ordinary person, who could pack in the crowds, so she had to go.

DFCtomm on November 6, 2008 at 12:17 AM

Who are these “insiders”? Let’s have some names. How bout coming out personally to stand by those charges. Where was the evidence for these so-called “irritations” and “lack of knowledge”? I want names, dates, and documented evidence that Sarah actually said, or did any of those things. Until then all this is media/back door political gossip. Someone in the McCain camp has an agenda, and it isn’t conservative.

O’Reilly doesn’t surprise me in any of this, he’s a ratings whore and could care less about the truth. But, I had more respect for Cameron. Shame on you Carl for using petty gossip for media attention.

Wow, I guess Sarah really did put a weed up someone’s hiney over there. Glad to see somebody did.

Joe Pyne on November 6, 2008 at 12:18 AM

Someone at FoxNews, whether its Roger Ailes or whoever near the top, has put the order out to try and make Sarah Palin look as bad as possible through sharing these TOTALLY UNVERIFIABLE stories of what allegedly occured during the campaign.

I see this as their effort to end Palin’s political career so that she never runs again for anything outside of Alaska.

Of course, that effort will fail, and she will be out in the public and doing better than ever very soon. Her supporters will not let her just slip away into an obscure political career in Alaska.

TheMightyQuinn on November 6, 2008 at 12:18 AM

There is something really wrong with all of this crap being dumped on Sarah. Are they trying to destroy the entire republican party because she captured the base of the party? Either they don’t know what they are doing or they know exactly what they are doing. There is something rotten in Denmark when she is made the scape-goat for everything. You know, it seems like this woman can’t do anything.

cjs1943 on November 6, 2008 at 12:19 AM

McCain claims that the loss was his fault but then allows his “aides” to attack Palin anonymously behind the scenes to end up blaming her anyway!

IF McCain has anything to do with this smear, he is a coward–nothing like the man who refused to leave his comrades behind.

Capital Mess on November 6, 2008 at 12:19 AM

Hey, the election is over, Repubs lost. Leave the damn woman alone! Repub elites would rather lose an election than to cater to a female governor from Alaska. You got it!

d1carter on November 6, 2008 at 12:19 AM

Hmmmmmmmmm….I may just have figured this out. Forgive me for being so slow…it’s the bathrobe/bath towel thing. It’s not just because she’s so popular, it IS because she’s a woman…so the old boy network HAS to destroy her. Dang, I always thought Cameron looked like a mommas boy, but he really does have issues…think about it. A powerful, popular woman as a potential leader. Lesser men MUST destroy. I am so disgusted now, I have to quit coming here to HA. I have better things to do with my life. Bye y’all.

I have seen Sarah Palin in debate… the handlers screwed up trying to debut her to the real MSM divas. Things would have gone a lot smoother if she had been allowed to interact with the press she meet on her campaign journey.

Bottom line, McCain was my next to last pick in the primaries and would not have been the candidate except that independents et al were allowed to pick him.

Limerick on November 6, 2008 at 12:30 AM

I have no doubt that there was tension and disagreement from Palin and her staff after the pathetic way the McCain staff rolled her out, tried to mold and control her message, and toss her to the left wing media right off the bat.

Palin handled herself very well in Alaska during her campaigns and handled some stiff competition from well funded and experienced politicians.

When the McCain campaign let Palin be Palin, she did very well on the road,in local interviews, and in her VP debate.

This is complete and utter bullsh!t coming from a campaign
that allowed Obama to frame and get away with issue after
issue (especially the ties to Fannie/Freddie/Rev. Wright).

McCain had very little support from the base and would have
been beaten by more than 20 points if not for Palin being added to the ticket.

I hope Sara Cuda b!tch slaps the hell out of McCain and his
staff for trying to divert their campaign mistakes and throw the blame on the real driving force of this ticket and the only hope it had to succeed.

They are making a very big mistake with this and providing
the left with validation that adding her to the ticket was only a political stunt and not because she had what it takes
to lead.

Very, very, very big mistake doing this McCain.

Kini on November 6, 2008 at 12:33 AM

Every complaint that this story claims that Palin was making, ie: how McCain’s staff was mishandling her, I was making from the beginning as well. It was pretty damned clear to most of us watching that they were mishandling her badly from day one. No wonder she would get ticked off, if indeed she even did.

If, as the story claims, Palin’s handlers were so terribly worried about her ‘knowledge,’ then why were Gibson and Couric, two established big network liberals, granted the first interviews? And why were the first interviews so long? It simply does not compute. The purpose was for Palin to sell the public on her credibility as a VP, not to prove she could go mano a mano with high profiles big media liberal interviewers who were out to nail her. Why didn’t they roll her out, and get her some practice in a friendlier venue? Even pro-athletes get warm-up games before the season. Why was she withheld for weeks from LImbaugh, Hannity, Medved, Hewitt, Ingraham and the rest of the conservative side of the media? It is unfathomable that Palin’s handlers were so shockingly incompetent, and even more shocking now to see them scrambling to bad mouth her every chance they get. Who does it serve now to try to destroy her in total after the fact?

If the idea for these handlers is to try to get other jobs with other future candidates how does it help them to become known as leakers? None of it makes much sense when you think about it. It just doesn’t smell right.

Mr A on November 6, 2008 at 12:33 AM

Re: the update

Two, some of this stuff — like the bathrobe story — would have to have come from high-ranking McCain staffers with direct access to Palin. Were there any Romney people that high up in Maverick’s campaign?

If you’ll recall, Allah, in the time after the announcement of Palin as the running mate and before the convention, McCain, Palin, Romney and Graham were travelling everywhere together.

But your first point holds up; that, if Romney wanted to sabotage McCain/Palin, he’d have done it before the election.

Sarah Palin & Hillary Clinton had more balls than Obama & McCain.

portlandon on November 6, 2008 at 12:38 AM

Sarah deserves better than this. McCain and his aides are scum.

jencab on November 6, 2008 at 12:38 AM

Even if it were Wallace and Schmidt, I wouldn’t rule out some low level Romney supporters doing their bit in.

promachus on November 6, 2008 at 12:39 AM

I saw that Nicolle Wallace on an interview with Chris Matthews and she reminded me of some college kid who didn’t study getting reamed in oral exams with her professor. I was saddened the byline “McCain Senior Advisor” was under her the whole time. “Senior” advisor!

Marcus on November 6, 2008 at 12:39 AM

Google Sarah Palin, and read.

DFCtomm on November 6, 2008 at 12:31 AM

Holy s**t.

You are a joke.

MadisonConservative on November 6, 2008 at 12:39 AM

Love it, so now FOX is part of the MSM. Didn’t watch it all, but was told Bill ripped him at the end. So, she may be enough of a threat that their going to finish her off now? Isn’t it interesting that a college grad, and daughter of two educators didn’t know that Africa was a land mass. This could get very nasty.

N4646W on November 6, 2008 at 12:39 AM

Ok I saw Bill O’Reilly tonight and heard the story. If she is guilty of excessive shopping I can see where stress & pressure could be the catalyst, and even “gaps” in knowledge and stubbornness in being instructed, I can forgive her these things as along as she gets them in check, its not like she left babies to die in soiled utility rooms and had Marxists friends in her closet. She also connects well with people like me who became a Republican because of moral concerns within our culture. I can give her another shot.

Irenaeus on November 6, 2008 at 12:39 AM

Why are some of you putting the blame on Romney. He has come out earlier saying he wouldn’t be running for office. What does he have to gain from this? He loses big time if he is the source of this crap. I think the Huckster would be a more likely candidate, but he wasn’t part of the campaign. So, who else was associated with the campaign and expects to make hay out of the destruction of Sarah? Graham? Guilliana? Lieberman?

cjs1943 on November 6, 2008 at 12:40 AM

Also, I love how Palin’s “knowledge” is again a factor!

You just elected a “President” who accomplished NOTHING, his entire life..except for being a manipulative, opportunist, chameleon, ball of clay with the worst intentions.

“Iran is a tiny country, not a serious threat!”
“Saving babies gasping for air is above my pay grade”
“Let’s bankrupt the coal industry”
“Palestinians have a right to hate Israel”
“Georgia deserved to be attacked”

BUT OH, PALIN WAS IN A BATHROBE, MAKING HANDLERS CRY BECAUSE SHE IS SO MEAN AND DID YOU KNOW SHE IS A SHOP A HOLIC?

I guess the country “overcame” the race issue, but women who are the least bit attractive and successful are still dumb bimbos who only have their looks going for them!!

Maybe Sarah should stop taking care of herself! Chop her hair off, put on a pant suit and shoot up some testosterone. It’s the only way she’ll ever be accepted!

Capital Mess on November 6, 2008 at 12:41 AM

Obama is thinking of naming his new puppy Shep O’Reilly.

profitsbeard on November 6, 2008 at 12:41 AM

Just a thought, but originally Schmidt and Davis favored Palin as the VP pick, Grahamnesty favored Romney.

The real question is why aren’t we attack the Democraps instead of playing the same game we have been playing for the last eighteen months?

Limerick on November 6, 2008 at 12:41 AM

LEAVE SARAH ALONE! LEAVE HER ALONE!

alex342 on November 6, 2008 at 12:41 AM

Palin didn’t loss her cool when she was gagged by the
those radio jerks. She never lost her cool on the stumps.

She carried McCain and the party while she was on tour.
Always had the crowds on fire and now these Staffers and
press weasles make her out to be a liability. BULL$HIT.

I don’t believe any of this. Cameron should know better.
This is all petty BS. And why is it a Repub can’t make a mistake and the libs can almost committ murder and be hailed for it. FOX NEWS Lost another viewer.

Irenaeus on November 6, 2008 at 12:39 AM

Lesson I learned long, long, ago.

Never shop for a woman. That is her domain.

Kini on November 6, 2008 at 12:42 AM

i feel so bad for this woman.

shame on the Republican Party.

In the meantime Algore sharpens his green sword to cut the heart out of capitalism.

How’s that abortion issue workin’ our for the Republicans?

Not to mention Supreme Court Justice John Edwards preparing his majority opinion on Roe v Wade.

Limerick on November 6, 2008 at 12:43 AM

And you know this exactly how? Personal knowledge or more MSM dreck?

johnsteele on November 6, 2008 at 12:25 AM

Don’t get you’re panties in a wad she seems to have done the right thing in all the cases she went maverick, but it doesn’t win you friends. It’s too late to google it and wade through all the stories that have been written about her. Take my word the story wasn’t a tear down.

DFCtomm on November 6, 2008 at 12:44 AM

You confuse me for someone who cares about what you think. Google Sarah Palin, and read.

DFCtomm on November 6, 2008 at 12:31 AM

There you go folks, there’s his solid evidence for his statement that Palin cannot get along with the men in her “circle.”

Rosie O’Donnell (”Gulf of Tonkin, Google it”) was more of an influence than we thought.

Joe Pyne on November 6, 2008 at 12:44 AM

‘Cause thats the way it works in the wonderful world of the Beltway. We need to move the capitol to an abandoned strip mall in Ottuma Iowa.

johnsteele on November 6, 2008 at 12:36 AM

How about the Atol we used for the Nuke test? Then we could get the military to retarget it.

N4646W on November 6, 2008 at 12:44 AM

Screw McCain and his incompetent lowlife staffers! I’m not a Palin fanatic but my opinion of her remains undiminished by their transparent attempts to cover their azzes.

They certainly take after their boss, don’t they?

FloatingRock on November 6, 2008 at 12:44 AM

Carl Cameron & Shepard Smith have single handedly turned Fox News into TMZ & PerezHilton. What the hell is going on over there? Is the Fairness Doctrine a self impossed dictate from Barry?

This Palin Bash fest infuriates me because I can name atleast 35 people I know who are repubs who were going to sit this one out until McCain picked her as the VP Pick. We all knew McCain was just a RINO, if anything McCain is a moderate Democrat.

What world is this? In one election, we have repubs turning on one another, Palin Bashing by the campaign SHE CARRIED DRAGGING & SCREAMING OVER THE FINISH LINE!!

Is it just me, or is it THE WOMEN CANDIDATES OF 2008 that carried all the water for the Male candidates?

1. Hillary pretty much delivered Obama the presidency by endorsing him. There was alot of Hate from the Hill supporters. She convinced them to support Barry. Hillary was also the most effective at attacking Barry.
