This is not the change you seek

While some Democrats celebrate what they see as a game-changing election, others have decided to start scaling back expectations already.  Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid both said yesterday that they had learned from previous failures of both parties in overreaching and antagonizing the middle of the electorate.  For those who voted “change”, this may sound a sour note through the revelry over Barack Obama’s victory:

Democratic leaders are tamping down on expectations for rapid change and trying to signal they will place a calm hand on the nation’s tiller.

“The country must be governed from the middle,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Wednesday. Repeating themes from election night, she said she plans to emphasize “civility” and “fiscal responsibility.” …

“There is a wave of hope that swept the country … not a mandate for any hope or ideology, but a mandate to get things done,” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Wednesday morning on National Public Radio.

But to get what done?  A senior aide to Pelosi said he did not envision the House Democrats “going off on an ideological mission”, and pointed back to 1993 as an example.  Democrats won the White House back after twelve years along with majorities in Congress and decided to go after radical change in health care.  They discovered that the electorate wasn’t at all radical when they got bounced out of Congressional leadership for the first time in 40 years.

That probably means the Freedom of Choice Act will not be the first item on the priority list, as Obama promised Planned Parenthood.  There would be no better way to stir the hornet’s nest than to get abortion on demand, complete with federal funding, in the early days of the session.  Without a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, I doubt that Card Check will come up soon, either.  Democrats can’t afford to anger either constituency for long, but they will probably wait until some of the pressing budget and tax issues get settled first.

Democratic leadership obviously wants to play long ball here.  If they try enacting a sweeping shift to the Left, a suspicious electorate will almost certainly penalize them, especially in the Blue Dog districts that elect more conservative Representatives.  In 2010, the ground is much more even for Republicans in the Senate than this year, and a radical 111th would give the GOP some easy targets.  If they’re smart, they’ll kick the most controversial measures down the road a bit while trying to reassure voters that they can be trusted with one-party government.

What about the Fairness Doctrine? The Dems idea of “civility” is no opinions except theirs.

BigD on November 6, 2008 at 9:14 AM

I’ve thought this as well.

If I’m them, I sit back, coast, let this financial crisis blow over, let Obama take the credit for it when it inevitably rights itself, get an easy second term, THEN launch nuclear liberal hell on the populace.

I will, however, be quite surprised if they don’t get drunk with power and overreach.

Remember, we heard these same kind of promises in 2006.

I still see epic fail in the future for these guys. And remember—when they do fail remind your hopechangey voters that this is exactly what they voted for, and exactly what they intended. You can’t vote for a candidate’s skin. You vote for the whole candidate, and by that vote you endorse all of his policies. Hang it around their necks with a big “D” for dumbass, and rub their noses in it.

Sekhmet on November 6, 2008 at 9:16 AM

They have to lower the bar because as their ineptitude starts to show they don’t have the Repubs to blame. This is not to suggest they won’t pass legislation. Ultimately they will pass every thing they want to with more than enough help from some Repub Senators.

I don’t understand why. The longer they wait, the closer it will be to the mid-terms. If the put it off past then, it will hurt BHO’s re-election chances.

I’m not encouraged by Pelosi talking about the middle. Her Idea of the middle is socialism lite. See, my problem is that I think we, as a whole (repubs included) have veered so far towards the left that the idea of a constitutional, limited, centrist government is only available in a select few Americans dreams.

Perhaps Democrats are only about stealing as much as possible while they are in power, rather than enacting the Daily Kos agenda.

Every Dem Congressman a multi-multi-millionaire is much cheaper than putting forth the nutroots agenda, so I say, have at it.

Engage in all of the graft and kickbacks you want, Democrats. Who’s going to stop you? The Executive Branch? Please. The Judicial Branch. I’m laughing now. The Media? They put out the lies and covered up the fraud got you elected.

Dem Congressmen stealing with both hands is still far cheaper than universal healthcare and heavy unionization.

It’s a win-win for everyone except the nutroots and the sorry jackasses who bought the notion that voting for Democrats would improve their sorry lives.

I’ve always said that Washington’s definition of bi-partisanship is Republicans and Democrats working together to pass the Democratic agenda.

MarkTheGreat on November 6, 2008 at 9:27 AM

Remember how pissed off Michael Moore and the “progressive” activists got when they put the Dems in charge of Congress in 2006 with the expectation that they’d get us out of Iraq immediately? Or do anything at all? Same thing might happen now, even with huge majorities and a “mandate” behind them. Pelosi and Reid seem to be letting Obama know that they intend to be mules that he has to drag along behind him.

I’m not sure, though, because Obama, too, has indicated that he intends to take it slow. He ascribes to the slow-and-patient philosophy of insidiously undermining Constitutional principles from within in a way that the population barely notices. He may very well be completely on-board with their intention to drag their feet, or he could be the architect of the strategy. They need to be careful, though, because those rabid nutroots won’t wait long for some payoff. Obama, Pelosi, and Reid should be far more frightened of the nutcases on their own side than of us.

Speaking of bi-partisan, every time I’ve heard bi-partisan in the past two years it has been for some liberal bill that the republicans simply wouldn’t roll over and die for. Bi-partisan is nonsense when one of the parties only cares about their ridiculous, partisan agenda.

aelhues on November 6, 2008 at 9:28 AM

Obama’s been built up to such a completely rediculous and improbable degree that anything other than a miraculous tranformation of the entire globe into some sort of utopian “one-world brotherhood of man” is going to bring harsh dissapointment. The honeymoon is going to end quickly, and it’s going to be ugly.

What, what happened to change?

They’ll have to so something. They can’t simply do nothing. They went for SCHIP, amnesty, windfall profits tax, etc. They are bound to go for it again. They can’t help themselves. Bad economic numbers will push them into action. The Dems will bailout the auto industry. They owe the unions too much. They owe the banking industry too much. They will give hand outs, they can’t not do it. That is in them. Obama will give tax credits, he will. Thr Republicans need to highlight how tax credits are banrupting Social Security, by allowing people to not pay into the system while we have the babyboomers retiring.

They cannot help themselves and it is too easy to be to the righ of the Democrats. I pray for a Harry Reid loss in 2010.

The WSJ ran a great editorial yesterday regarding the New York Times‘ sudden revelation that some of the detainees at Gitmo are… gasp… dangerous terrorists after all!

The Obama administration will “take an immediate interest in what’s actually going on there,” said Prof. Laurence Tribe, who once taught Mr. Obama at Harvard Law School and now is among his legal advisers. “I’m certain that a rather bright light would be turned to Guantanamo right away.”

But… I thought he was gonna close it down on Day 1 and give everyone there a green card and a civil trial! “Take an immediate interest?” WTF? Free the terrorists now!

My friend Jim K posted this back in January in his blog, Right Thoughts…

“Dear Voters

I know that you are already worn out from this never-ending political season. I feel your pain, I truly do. I was worn out twelve months ago. That having been said, please allow me to remind you of something that many of you seem to have forgotten.

Change simply for the sake of changing isn’t progress. It’s madness for a nation and in an individual, it can be a sign of a serious mental instability.

Do not believe anyone that promises change without detail. Do not accept that someone who has been a lifelong politician and lives solely for the trappings of power is truly trying to “create change.” In fact, don’t let anyone get away with using the word unless they define what it is they want to change, why it needs to be changed, and precisely how they want to change it.

Change for it’s own sake is useless, dangerous and stupid. Try to remember that.

Yours,

Sick of Change Without Meaning

In one of life’s little ironies, I’d say the person that Obama will be consulting most on “how do you do this job?” might be Bill Clinton. He’d have to do it discreetly. The Bushes would be gracious enough to advise, but Obama could never ask a Bush for advice (it might get out). Carter is too old and wacky.

So I think the SNL skit about Obama calling Hillary at 3 am might more be Obama saying, “Putin has moved his troops to the Ukrainian border. What do I do?” to Bill. No time to consult the 300 advisors.

Barney Frank is already out with his Financial Services Committee agenda for killing what’s left of the mortgage industry, federal regulation of insurance (here comes the ACORN shakedown of the insurance companies), etc. Voters threw out two of the most competent Republicans on that committee as well as two of the smartest and best on the Senate Banking Committee.

Chris Dodd is probably going to take over Foreign Relations. He is up for reelection in 2010. Anyone think he is going to be a voice of moderation in that job?

John Conyers doesn’t take direction from anyone, nor does Charlie Rangel. Does anyone seriously believe they will pursue moderate agendas? Conyers is already preparing the show trials of Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, Alberto Gonzalez, etc.

And then they have Hillary to deal with in the Senate, not to mention Chuck Schumer who is also up for reelection.

Herding cats does not begin to describe what faces Reid and Pelosi. They have a cadre of far-left committee chairman and a majority given to them by virtue of moderates and conservatives from red states and suburban districts.

These two clowns already proved incimpetent as leaders in the last Congress. Whay should we expect them to suddenly run a smooth operation and produce good legislation now?

They may be able to keep their crazy leftist domestic agenda in their pockets, but “mark my words…” their foreign policy ideas are going to be forced on them (and us) rather quickly. Then again they will have John F. Kerry (who served in Vietnam) to speak for us, so everything will be okay.

Huh — newsflash on the press secretary question …

Robert Gibbs, a top aide to Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) on his campaign and in his Senate office, will be named the White House press secretary, a top Democratic official said.

Gibbs was usually the senior official on Air Obama, the campaign plane. As communications director of Obama’s Senate office, Gibbs was a key strategist in Obama’s rapid move to the national stage.

Well they promised so much, so that is not going to help them, I expect this will be like the Labour party in the UK. It will be try to look good for the first term, set the scene, get your people into place and move in selected areas, but keep it beneath the radar, then when a second term is acheived go for it, especially easy when a helpful media is telling everyone that the opposition is completely useless and stirring up rebellion there by publishing polls sayong that he would never get in, you will see that happen without any doubt, ignore it.

You have to ignore the media and find someway to get around it, the Media is really powerful and they gave the impression that the Conservatives were crooked and extreme right wingers, so in the end they were forced to become a Socialist party in all but name, which is what Cameron is.

The other thing you must do without fail is keep hitting away at the corruption of the Democrats, that carried out over the last couple of years and any that comes to light, you must also attack the funding of this election, keep at it, you must also attack the voter fraud and ACORN aqnd tie it back to Obama.

The economy and debt means that Obama has very little room so hit him everytime he makes a decision that will impead the recovery, get the big hitters on TV spreading the message.

Also kill any of this infighting rubbish and really deal with the people dishing dirt on Palin, if you do need to have a night of the long knives do it quickly and efficiently and move on, the media will kill you otherwise, just as they did in the UK, the issue in the UK was the very real and impossible to ignore fracture on the EU, you do not have something as deep as that.

Someone suggested putting abortion to the state level, a great idea and if you are going to work on eductaion get the message out on the basics and the indoctrination.

And most important of all, you must get a leadership of the Republicans that has an ideology that can easily be explained and sold to the people and is not one that is linked to Wall Street and their ilk but hard work and sound house keeping.

Do that and you will win.

As for the UK we do havea little advantage, if the Conservatives win, we can have a leadership change without having to go back to the country, I can always hope of course…

Please. Does anyone really believe they won’t go overboard governing from the extreme left?

When you raise 600+ mil to buy the White House, you owe a lot of favors. There’s no way Obama will tell the unions to go shove it. Card check legislation will pass.

I also expect billions more to be given away in bailouts(Bush is partly to blame for opening this Pandora’s box). Billions to be handed out in subsidies for the environmental lobby. The Freedom of Choice Act for the pro-abortion crowd. And so on and so forth.

I do agree that they may back off of the Fairness Doctrine. That’s encroaching into 1st Amendment territory. Even Pelosi and Reid can’t be that dumb enough to pick that fight.

Energy issues are too pressing for them to be able to wait it out. Plus, when Israel lights up Iran, crude jumps over the moon. They can’t stall on it.

a capella on November 6, 2008 at 9:40 AM

Why can’t they stall? They have for years now, and no one has managed to make them move forward yet. Now it’ll be even more impossible to get them to move if they don’t want to – and they clearly don’t want to. All three have declared the benefits of high energy and gas costs. Do you think the American people will march in the streets and demand action? The electorate just gave them permission to make energy and gas costs skyrocket, so that the coming of the Alternative Energy Utopia will be hastened. I think they’ll dig in and make sure we don’t have coal, don’t have nuclear, don’t have affordable gasoline, etc. Only when we’re all crippled with those lazy scientists finally get off their butts and invent the alternative energy source they’ve been holding back on.

I wonder how many Obamabots have forwarded their mortgage payments to their Representative or Senator?

darwin on November 6, 2008 at 9:53 AM

Can we all do that now?

rgranger on November 6, 2008 at 10:04 AM

What happens when Obama-Pelosi-Reid can’t deliver “change” quickly? Obama voters don’t seem like the thoughtful, level-headed types:)
