Russia has some change ready for Obama
posted at 10:30 am on November 6, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
“Change”, in this case, consists of missile deployments on the frontiers of NATO. Russian president Dmitri Medvedev announced the move yesterday in a speech that never once mentioned the new American President-elect, but caustically criticized the Western approach to Moscow. Medvedev also reversed course on missile disarmament in western Russia:
President Medvedev ordered missiles to be stationed up against Nato’s borders yesterday to counter American plans to build a missile defence shield.
Speaking within hours of Barack Obama’s election, Mr Medvedev announced that Russia would base Iskander missiles in its Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad – the former German city – next to the border with Poland.
He did not say whether the short-range missiles would carry nuclear warheads.
Taking advantage of the world’s attention on the US elections, Mr Medvedev also cancelled plans to withdraw three intercontinental ballistic missile regiments from western Russia by 2010.
This would appear to be the first major challenge to Obama, even though he has not yet taken office. Russia carefully watched as Obama denigrated missile-defense research and deployment during the primaries, and then remained carefully silent about it in the general election. They want to see whether they can intimidate Obama into retreat, even after eastern European nations like Poland and the Czech Republic have already signed onto a partnership with the US for these missile-defense stations.
Joe Biden warned that Obama would face just such a test early in his term. He also warned that Obama’s reaction would not look like smart strategy, and told Obama supporters that they would have to stick by him while Obama received massive criticism for his actions. One can interpret that in two different ways: either Obama’s response would anger his supporters, or it would anger everyone else.
I’m hoping that Obama sticks to American commitments in the region. Given his comments about ending missile-defense research and deployment, I’m afraid that Obama will run away from Russia on this point, and that the first Medvedev/Putin-Obama confrontation will remind people even more of the disastrous Kennedy-Khrushchev summit in 1961 that precipitated the Berlin Wall and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

The old “joke” about the electoral predilections of Jews was that they “earn like Episcopals, and vote like Peurto Ricans.” I think, now that the Episcopalians have become so anti-Israel, and the Jews have become so much more self-hating as they have become more successful in American society, it can now be updated to “they earn like Jews, and vote like Episcopalians.”
Of course this is only for the liberal Jews who have no other religion than Democratic Party politics. Religious Jews tend to vote more like religious Christians–pro-Israel, and pro-family.
smellthecoffee on November 6, 2008 at 1:09 PM
Maybe that is the true Jewish curse – to be a people of such admirable resolve in the face of hardship, of such poetic grace in their lamenting of mans ills, yet so mindlessly suicidal in their journey.

It was on Ed’s Saturday NARN show that I heard the best line, and most relevant to this story, of the entire election.
I think it was King Banian (sp?) that remarked that the last video game Obama admitted to playing was pong. He continued:
“I’d at least hoped he’d say Missile Command. That would at least show he understood the importance of a missile shield to defend a city.”
Canadian Infidel on November 6, 2008 at 1:14 PM
Obama’s “test”. Here’s what will happen.
All at the same time; numerous terrorist attacks on America and America’s interests will take place, Mexico’s cartel wars will spread across the border into California-Arizona-and Texas, China will take Taiwan and finish the takeover of Tibet while invading Japan and taking over and seizing the Panama Canal simultaneously, while Israel bombs Iran nuke facilities and launches a full scale assault on Gaza, while Iran then leads other Arab countries in the decimation and destruction of Israel while the Arabs stop exporting oil to America, while Russia takes back all of it’s former territories and pummels Europe with missiles while at the same time launching a military backed coup of democratic countries in South America, while Pakistan invades Afghanistan, while India invades Pakistan, while Syria and Lebanon launch an offensive into Iraq, while Cuba takes the Caribbean… and the only relatively safe haven will be in Africa where tribal wars and genocide still rage.
Oh, and Somali pirates will invade and seize a Dutch registered cruise ship full of Corporate executives and their families from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac after they get another 100 billion dollar bail out payment.
Did I miss anything?
FlatFoot on November 6, 2008 at 1:21 PM
The US has already shown its strength by daring to change the status quo in the Arab and Muslim world to the advantage of the weakest and the suppressed: Shia and Kurds in Iraq, Syrian reformers, Lebanese civil society, Africans in Darfur, Iranian women and students, artists and liberals across the Arabian Peninsula. OPEC responded by buying our election. Forget about energy independence over these 4 yrs.
John McCain would have dealt with Russia and lessened the likelihood of conflict. Putin would have tread lightly with that administration.
You are arguing for Brzezinski’s chessboard. That revanchist nutjob gave us those “excited Islamists” we’re fighting now. He plays at geopolitics like it’s a big game of risk, but he ignores diplomacy and brushes off the tragic consequences.
Show us you’re hot shit and invade Pakistan then, President Obama. Vietnam and Iraq were cakewalks. Let’s win a real war against a country with nukes that doesn’t really have beef with us, just to freak out China. Let’s provoke them to turn on Russia when we cut off their oil supplies and destroy all their allies.
Obama is in this to win this, too, because he wants China out of Darfur and other African regions. Clinton might have bucked the system. She must have made herself clear at the Bilderberger meeting in Fairfax. No VP spot for her, and so she returned to the Senate. I don’t think John McCain would have played risk with Zbig, either.
So, now you’ve got your chickenhawk dressed as a dove in the Whitehouse. Only a matter of time till we see why Biden told us to gird our loins. Nothing good will come of this.

Chilling. They were talking about how creepy the acceptance speech was, how he was out there all alone without his family (like the typical acceptance speech), etc. – and the Brokaw/Rose conservation acknowledging that they really don’t know who this guy is or what he believes.

1. I don’t believe that this system is defensive because “the govt told me so.” I know it’s defensive because my engineers are designing/building/testing/deploying this system.
2. I have no problem with Russia defending itself from rogue state ICBMs. Unfortunately for your assinine analogy, it has no rogue threats in the Lesser Antilles or the Yukon.

2. Russia considers that huge country between the Lesser Antilles northwest to the Yukon a rogue state, as does the rest of the world.
Chimpy on November 6, 2008 at 2:55 PM
If that’s what it takes to get the Russian panties unwadded, then fine by me. The Czechs and Poles may have a problem with their former overlord’s troops inside their borders again, though.
The United States is not a rogue state. Didn’t you hear? Obama won the election.
Cuffy Meigs on November 6, 2008 at 3:02 PM
At least you are reasonable. But a better location would be Kuwait or Qatar if your worried about Iran.
Chimpy on November 6, 2008 at 3:29 PM
Not exactly.
The flight characteristics (minimum velocity, Earth’s rotation, etc.) of any future US-bound Iranian ICBM takes it directly over Europe. This isn’t the Iranians’ choice; blame Newton. Kuwait/Qatar would put you in a chase mode, and ICBMs aren’t exactly slowpokes. Better to be in their path.
Of course, short-range Iranian missile threats can be dealt with in theater with short-range interceptors in Kuwait/Qatar(e.g. Patriot, Aegis ships). But we’re talking ICBMs.
Poland and Czech Republic weren’t just pulled from a hat.

With Obama the President elect, there is no question that we have kicked into a new gear in Bible prophecy. And Russia play a major role. Pay close attention to Russia’s increasing political and militaristic ties with Iran and the Arabs. These countries will team up on tiny Israel and try to destroy it. Many of them are already allied together.

Oh, you mean you haven’t heard about the major terrorist attack yesterday (that is if you weren’t reading here)? More than 40 kassams and mortars were fired at Israel and several landed in Ashkelon, injuring three people. That came after Israeli forces took out a terror cell planning on using a tunnel to infiltrate Israel with the express purpose of kidnapping and/or killing Israelis.

Liberty or Death on November 6, 2008 at 5:16 PM
Actually, I think the market is falling *BECAUSE* Obama was elected, not for some other reason.
Point in fact: My wife separated from her company recently. On two recent job interviews (well known companies, Fortune 500, one of them mentioned two nights ago on Mad Money) she was told that the open position was on hold, as they had a hiring freeze until January. A little prodding by the wife showed that the corporations are so nervous over the corporate tax hikes and supposed anti-business stance of Obama (who was way up in the polls), that they are going into lock-down mode in preparation. Our country punishes our own companies worse than most (all?) other countries.
You know how certain radio personalities have been warning about companies taking their business overseas? Well, most of the big companies already have overseas operations, and they can easily move their top people over to those locations, lay off their US employees and continue business in a foreign country with foreign employees (for less compensation) and not be as penalized for doing business.
You know what’s really bad about that? Even if the country doesn’t fold and become some 3rd world hell-hole, those companies are not likely to ever return to the US once they’ve relocated. Bureaucracies never grow smaller, welfare payments never decrease, so the US can’t ever make it so attractive that the companies would ever want to return and bring back the US jobs. The wife has already been asked if she would be willing to relocate out of the US by one firm….
I’m just sayin’
Geministorm on November 6, 2008 at 5:22 PM
Re. Geministorm
hmm…I was looking at the retail sales performance and largely attributing the stock fall to that. But the “lock down mode” point is well taken.
unrealcitizen on November 6, 2008 at 5:29 PM
That’s the truth. But, right now it’s based on the fact that no one knows what the heck BHO is going to do (though many of us are pretty sure). Just wait until BHO starts putting some real details into his tax and spending policies. Then the markets are really going to tank.
Personally, I love the irony of the idiot libs giving another 25 billion to the auto companies just to run them out of business, later, with their global warming/anti-energy policy. Now, we all get to see the realization of cognitive dissonance. It ain’t pretty stuff.
progressoverpeace on November 6, 2008 at 5:32 PM
Because the MSM have gotten what they wished for, the Obamassiah has been elected, now everything is good and all will be fine…just don’t pay attention to the man behind the curtain!
Also, the left and Dems are already blaming the drop in the market on Bush as usual. However, anyone with half a brain knows the stock market is like a barometer of world events and the market is obviously reacting to Obama becoming president, and that’s the problem! The markets aren’t going the direction they’d like and this is why the MSM is being silent as it makes the
peoplegullible fools that voted for THE ONE question if Obama really is THE ONE to bring hope and change or if they’ve been had!Reality is like a runaway locomotive…when it hits you it hits hard and the fools that voted the empty suit into office are very soon going to be crushed and smashed by reality!
Liberty or Death on November 6, 2008 at 5:34 PM
I strongly believe that the corporations are taking Obama at his word that he is going to penalize the “rich”. Obama had no qualms about saying who was going to pay (Big Oil, greedy corporations, etc.), the message was loud and clear to the corporations that didn’t have an axe to grind that Obama was going to be anti-business.
Obama is also very clear that he is going to implement a ground up economic plan, and insisting that he fundamentally rejects the trickle down economics of Reagan. I think everyone saw that clip at a Democratic primary debate where Charles Gibson told Obama flat out that tax cuts result in increased tax revenues, but Obama deferred and said he’d be willing to “look at” it, because his little pea-brain just couldn’t wrap itself around the capitalistic idea that more money is spent when people keep more of their own money. The idea that the government/bureaucracy is inefficient and wasteful, while individuals drive an economy like a locomotive, is just too foreign a concept to a socialist/communist.

We don’t just have to read the news, the results speak for themselves. It was the democrats that were on the take with Fannie/Freddie,protecting them from the many attempts by Republicans to enforce regulations. It was the democrats that
pulled out their typical race card/class warfare lines to allow Obama’s friends Johnson/Raines to make incompetent and corrupt decisions with lending practices that lead us into this mess.
Now they are going to be in charge of trying to fix it.
They freaking caused it.
Now with the country nearing a depression all they want to do is write stimulus checks(not worried about the deficit all of a sudden)spend on entitlement programs, rescind the
Bush tax cuts, and lower their line of being rich from 250,000 thousand a year to 120,000 right before election time.
The markets are reacting to many problems, but one of them is the in-experience of Obama and his history of going back
on what he says he is going to do(NSA wiretapping,Campaign
finance, gun ownership, troops out of Iraq immediately to conditions base on the ground,)I mean this idiot says he would still vote against the surge knowing if he knew then the success it has been now.
You would have to be either a blind Obama cultist or totally uniformed to not know that markets that are based a lot on speculation don’t have a lot of confidence in a President elect that has no real accomplishments, votes present most of the time, and has spent his whole campaign talking about crippling major business’s and our energy producers.
These are the idiots that some people think will “change the

“WE DO NOT HAVE A CRISIS AT FREDDIE MAC, AND PARTICULARLY AT FANNIE MAE.” Because of the “outstanding leadership” of Franklin Raines. And check out Bill Clinton at the end.

He’ll pull out before he even meets them. Then when he does meet them they will show him all the opposition research they’ve done including photos, will chew him up and spit him out. Then they will march into Georgia and the Ukraine.

I’m sorry you’re not reading everything. I wrote that this was derived from speaking with two companies (Fortune 500 firms) that my wife recently interviewed with. It has nothing to do with my knowledge, or lack thereof, of the stock market and market influences.
BTW, my wife (she’s the financial wizard, CPA etc.) was watching some money/investment show and they had nine market experts that were arguing whether this was due to the Obama election as well. So, perhaps since the “experts” are arguing this, you aren’t quite as informed as you think?

Obama will disarm the american people and will silence the press; standard marxist procedures

make no mistake, there are many communists infiltrated in all faces of the US, many in key government positions that want to install a communist dictatorship in the US

Chimpy,
10% slide in market value the moment — the moment — Obama is elected and it’s just a coincidence? Maybe. How do you know for sure?

I’d like to find a nice, inexpensive part of Miami where I’d be surrounded by patriotic Cubans and a pretty cool lifestyle. I’m in New York now, and I like city life, but they’re all commies here. Yo si puedo?

Yes, it’s difficult for an interceptor to chase an ICBM that has a head start. But also yes, it can definitely intercept an ICBM upon re-entry. Indeed, most of our successful test intercepts have been against re-entering targets.
That’s the whole point of putting interceptors/radars between the US and the rogue launch. Get up and hit them head on.
Moreover, for any of our paranoid Russian friends reading: it’s also possible to be too close to intercept a launch. Russian missiles would be screaming over our Polish interceptor field before they could even get the silo doors open. And I repeat, there’s that 2,000+ Russian ICBMs versus 10 Polish interceptors thing.
Settle down, Ivan — we’re not defending against you.

The big problem with Obama is the number of people who will be enslaved or killed while he is POTUS. The world knows that they get four years of “free play” while the man-child is in office.

Obama will say “just words?” and all will be healed.
He “will not weaponize space“, to make sure our enemies know we are nice.
Who would attack nice people?
Michelle O. must be so anarcho-syndicallisticaly pround.

Sometimes, there is truth to negative generalities. And unfortunately this is one of those times.
I am a member of the Ipod generation and I must ashamedly agree with you on every single point. The ignorance of my peers has been documented seventy-seven ways from Sunday – from seriously conducted research to the teen-on-the-street interviews.
What we know about history comes from Ken Burns documentaries and movies. Our math skills stink – calculators have replaced many young person’s basic brain functions. And if it wasn’t for the Harry Potter and Halo novel series most of us wouldn’t read an actual book short of outright bribery or severe threats.
Anyone who isn’t at worried about my generation either is uninformed or is suffering from Lake Wobegone Syndrome. Even more chilling is the fact that things will be worse before they get better…right now all we can do is vote for who drives the car (so to speak). Soon enough we’ll be driving it ourselves.

This escalation has been ongoing for a while. Obama won’t even be the one dealing with this directly because currently Bush is serving. And generally, Russia was going to be an issue regardless of what they just did. So we can already list the existing tests Obama will face. This one isn’t new. It’s been ongoing.

One question I have always had is why the missiles were deployed in Poland. Wouldn’t Turkey have been a better site to catch the missiles in the boost phase? In addition such a forward deployment would have allowed an intercept of Iranian missiles directed towards other targets (not Israel as I believe those would have a sub-orbital trajectory).

Bolivian President Evo Morales has announced that he will seek Russia’s aid for the country’s fight against drug trafficking.
Colombia’s Defence Minister Juan Manuel Santos has travelled to Russia to discuss military cooperation. Santos is a possible presidential candidate in Colombia’s 2010 elections. They are concerned about the Russian-Venezuelan naval exercises and Russian equipment sales to Venezuela.
Santos, the first Colombian defence minister to visit Moscow, said he agreed with Russian officials to reactivate a 1996 military co-operation agreement between Bogota and Moscow.
Colombian Vice-President Francisco Santos said during a visit to Russia in June that his country wants to buy fighter and transport helicopters and radar systems as it broadens its sources of defence equipment.
All this from October. Looks like a lot of countries are starting to reach an accommodation with the new landlord.
I remember what it was like when Jimmy Carter was in the White House.
Ida Amin holding US hostages…Carter did nothing.
The Canal Zone handed over to Panama.
The fall of the Shah of Iran to the Ayatollah.
Starved the military for funds and spare parts.
Russians in Afghanistan.
Cancelled the B-1 bomber
Gutted the CIA
Cut off all military assistance to Nicaragua
Cut off aid to El Salvador
Afghanistan, Ethiopia, South Yemen, Angola, Cambodia, Mozambique, Grenada and Nicaragua all fell to communism on his watch.
Good times… good times!
Obama will probably be worse.

You are correct in identifying the preferred stage to engage ballistic missiles — boost phase. They’ve got their engines throttled up, their heat signature is HUGE, and they haven’t had a chance to deploy their warheads/countermeasures. It is by far the best time to take them down. BUT … it only lasts 3 minutes.
The next phase — midcourse — is the one the Ground-Based Interceptors (GBIs) planned for Poland (and currently depolyed in Alaska and California) and the Navy’s Aegis ships address. It’s the longest phase of ballistic flight, lasting 20+ minutes, so we have more “battlespace” for multiple engagements.
The last phase is terminal phase. The warhead is falling back to Earth toward its target, and will reach it in less than a minute. This is where the famous Patriot and less-famous (but much more advanced) THAAD interceptors engage.
We are developing solutions for every phase of flight and they are layered together.
So while boost engagement is ideal, focusing on the midcourse offers significant advantages as well — more time, more shots, and security of rear-based assets instead of having them forward-based in a (now) very, VERY hot war. Remember, the enemy just took a huge gamble shooting an ICBM at the US; they’ll surely be attacking every US asset they can, especially in-range defensive assets.

I predict that President-Elect Obama will come to be known as Bush the 3rd worldwide. Wait until he gives his inaugarul speech. He’ll have those ruskies shaking in their boots. He may turn out to be another Reagan once he moves to the center. He knows no one can govern from the left and be re-elected. You better believe his re-election campaign started on 11/5/08
kanda on November 7, 2008 at 8:23 AM
Surely you jest!!
oh yeah I bet POOTY POOT will be shaking in his BOOTY BOOTS!! right.
Putin knows a punk when he sees one. Ukraine, poland the rest of those countries will probably seek a rapprochement with the Bear…recognizing the new world order same with taiwan and china…
and if these countries don’t get with hope and change russia will invade the ukraine, and china will take tawain…
and all obama will do is say uhhhh ummmmm
now thats change we can believe in!!
right4life on November 7, 2008 at 9:25 AM
interesting..just more change we can believe in!!!
but I’m a big believer in reaping what you sew…I would encourage any in the military to get out if they can.
let the blue devils defend their country.
and if a blue area gets attacked ala 9/11 who cares?
right4life on November 7, 2008 at 9:30 AM
Too funny. Do you think Obama would take any of that? I think the Russians and Chinese are too afraid to take the chance. Obama may not be the softy you think he is. My guess is he will pass his test with the American flag held high.
kanda on November 7, 2008 at 10:14 AM
If Iran were to shoot a missile at the US, it would pass over eastern Europe, then over the extreme north Atlantic, then along the east coast of the US (exact path would depend on the target). We don’t have land-based defensive missiles along the East Coast, although we do have ship-based defensive missiles along the East Coast. The defensive missiles in eastern Europe would be a first-line defense, and if they failed to hit the target, the ship-based missiles would be the second line of defense.
The land-based defensive missiles would also be in the path if Russia attacked Europe.
We also have land-based defensive missiles in Alaska, which would be in the path of an attack by North Korea, Russia, or China on the American West Coast. In such an event, the President would receive the warning from Sarah Palin.
Joe Biden warned us that Obama would be tested by an international crisis, but voters didn’t heed his warning. Since Obama is probably clueless on foreign policy outside of Kenya, we’ve got to pray that Scranton Joe has both hands on his puppet’s strings.

You must be kidding… if not, if in fact you’re serious, then your flaunting disconnect from reality might actually be diagnostic of delusional disorder (I say this with all due respect, and as a graduate student in clinical psychology).
To suggest that Obama is going to be Bush III, and the world will come to fear him from one single speech is nothing short of absurd. Please understand that Obama is beholden to the left wing of the left wing portion of the leftist Democractic party. His entire claim to fame was borne out of the anti-war movement! You actually think Obama will order military strikes on anyone without retribution from Moveone.org etc…?
Here’s my prediction: There will be no military action, whatsoever, in the Obama presidency. There’s no way Republicans will gather behind him, not after he denounced Bush’s efforts in Iraq so vehemently, nor will the Democratic be in favor of military strikes on anyone.
