Russia has some change ready for Obama

posted at 10:30 am on November 6, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

“Change”, in this case, consists of missile deployments on the frontiers of NATO.  Russian president Dmitri Medvedev announced the move yesterday in a speech that never once mentioned the new American President-elect, but caustically criticized the Western approach to Moscow.  Medvedev also reversed course on missile disarmament in western Russia:

President Medvedev ordered missiles to be stationed up against Nato’s borders yesterday to counter American plans to build a missile defence shield.

Speaking within hours of Barack Obama’s election, Mr Medvedev announced that Russia would base Iskander missiles in its Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad – the former German city – next to the border with Poland.

He did not say whether the short-range missiles would carry nuclear warheads.

Taking advantage of the world’s attention on the US elections, Mr Medvedev also cancelled plans to withdraw three intercontinental ballistic missile regiments from western Russia by 2010.

This would appear to be the first major challenge to Obama, even though he has not yet taken office.  Russia carefully watched as Obama denigrated missile-defense research and deployment during the primaries, and then remained carefully silent about it in the general election.  They want to see whether they can intimidate Obama into retreat, even after eastern European nations like Poland and the Czech Republic have already signed onto a partnership with the US for these missile-defense stations.

Joe Biden warned that Obama would face just such a test early in his term.  He also warned that Obama’s reaction would not look like smart strategy, and told Obama supporters that they would have to stick by him while Obama received massive criticism for his actions.  One can interpret that in two different ways: either Obama’s response would anger his supporters, or it would anger everyone else.

I’m hoping that Obama sticks to American commitments in the region.  Given his comments about ending missile-defense research and deployment, I’m afraid that Obama will run away from Russia on this point, and that the first Medvedev/Putin-Obama confrontation will remind people even more of the disastrous Kennedy-Khrushchev summit in 1961 that precipitated the Berlin Wall and the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Obama’s inauguration is beyond his ‘pay grade’, so I guess we should resume our soft bigotry of low expectations.

I wonder if the rest of the world will treat him with the same affirmative action that America has?

LimeyGeek on November 6, 2008 at 11:20 AM

Folks, I had been involved in conflicts in Central and South America for decades before the crisis in the Middle East and South West Asia. The battle against Marxism in that region was a constant struggle. The thing is it went hand in hand with the Cold War struggles against the former (and reforming) Soviet Union. Venezuela, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Panama and even Honduras now should be watched as hard as we watch Cuba. And we should never, never let our support of Columbia falter. (PE Obama, you listening?) If we do not show strength (ThatcherAgency) we run a gigantic risk of losing decades upon decades of progress achieved through nation building (and admittedly low-level conflicts) in that region and a possible renewed Cold War with the Soviets.

People, the primary communist goal has always been to take over the world and specially the US without going to war. Well, the process has started. And the the thing that really has worked for the communists has been to have been able to infiltrate american universities with marxist profesors that have brainwashed our sons and daughters for over 40 years. The defense budget will be cut and eventually, the US will have to let China take over Asia, Iran and the arabs will take over Israel and the entire middle east; Cuba and Venezuela communism will take over all of Latin America; Russia will take over easter europe; islam will take over wester europe the US will be isolated and will surrender to a marxist world. That’s the change Obama will bring; he has been given his orders.

Our quest for ‘nation building’ is the problem. We should be conquering if we are doing anything as all superpowers in past history did, and future superpowers will (after America).

Poking a bear is not ‘showing strength’. It is stupidity. That’s what we did when we decided to respond to Russian aggression in Georgia with missile shields and fast tracking NATO. That’s not strength. Russia showed strength when it invaded Georgia.

For America to show strength, it would have to show the resolve to fight against its enemies in the FATA region of Pakistan. Until we get the stomach to fight a war to win, our rhetorical bluster does not constitute a ‘show of strength’ to most of the world.

Nobody thinks America is strong or has the will to be strong. . . no matter what we SAY. Our actions show us to be a paper tiger not to be feared.

The missiles are just the appetizer course. The EU will cut the best deal they can with Moscow because it has the oil and the army and the stones. East Europe being part of the EU will likewise enjoy the sham independence. As for the Baltics and Ukraine, they have huge Russian populations that will desire to rejoin the Motherland. So, without firing a single shot, Putin will accomplish what the Red Army never could.

The only bright spot I can think of would be if, at their first meeting, Putin rips little Obama’s head off and pisses down the neck hole. How I would laugh and laugh!

dhimwit on November 6, 2008 at 11:26 AM

Don’t forget, Captain, that the Russians have also stated that they will jam the radars we do install. I don’t think they care too much about the 10 interceptors — but I’m thinking they care quite a bit about the radars and what capabilities those radars might have, for some strange reason.

The Russians seem intent on a new cold war. If they’d kept their cool, they’d probably be well on the way to joining NATO now. I’m at a loss as to what is driving the Russians at the moment — could it be domestic politics?

Sometime after Jan 20th, 2009, Russia moves into the Ukraine, Iran moves into Iraq once our forces leave prematurely, builds it’s first nuke or gets bombed by Israel, N. Korea rebuilds it’s Nuke program, China moves into Taiwan, Syria moves back into Lebanon and Venezuela begins it’s nuclear program becoming a new “Thorn in our side” from our own back yard. The chess pieces begin moving around the board. If Barry doesn’t show that he has stones to stand up to these despots….then checkmate!!!

the US will have to let China take over Asia

Um, I think India (nuclear armed) and Pakistan would have something to say about that. . . and actually Russia too. China couldn’t take over Asia if they wanted to. Now coming over here and attacking America with its numbers might be a different story. But China will never take over Asia by itself. . . and whether or not America ‘lets it’ is about as relevant as whether or not America lets China’s female gymnasts keep their gold medals.

Count to 10 on November 6, 2008 at 11:20 AM

Yes, I am well aware of that, only US citizens can vote in our elections…duh! However thanks to the Jewish and Hispanic votes for Obambi it cost McCain the election.

Regardless if the Jews are in the US or in Israel it still does not bode well for them as Obambi is a pacifist and will do NOTHING to help Israel. The only saving grace for Jews here in America is they won’t have to deal with the rise in violence that will surely fall upon the Jews in Israel with Obambi as president.

Jews in Israel were polled as to which president they would elect, McCain got 68% of the poll, that cleary demonstrates they realize what’s at stake with an Obambi presidency.

It’s easy for the Jews here in America to feel safe, however they should have feared for their families in Israel under a weakling like Obama as president, thus my statement that the Jews that voted for Obambi (Obambi) must be suicidal.

The fact of the matter is that the older Jews of this nation have bought into the media and Hollywood stereotype of Republicans/Christian Conservatives that we are anti-Semitic and their enemy. Which is a laugh because I don’t know of any bigger supporter of Israel than us. Even after their WWII struggles and eventual re-settlement in Israel. And younger Jews are like younger folks from other faiths. They tend to identify less with the parents faith and more with their political ideology. I fear we are not too far from where Israels situation might not be tenable. It will be a sad day, but if they won’t acknowledge that they’re in trouble

I don’t think they care too much about the 10 interceptors — but I’m thinking they care quite a bit about the radars and what capabilities those radars might have, for some strange reason.

You’re on to something here.

We can always base interceptors in US territory; they’d have to fly much farther to intercept, but it can be done.

Sensors, however, are very much location-dependent; the closer they are, the better they perform — and the more strategically valuable they become.

If it got down to nut-cutting time, the Russians would prefer we ditch the Czech radar instead of the Polish interceptors.

But given the mass ignorance as to the nature of our interceptors (see above) — NUKES!!! (um, not) — the Russian and lib American publics will fixate on scary, fiery, phallic missiles and not boring radars.

Just give us up Obama. Let the Russians have back their USSR satellites as an appeasing move. All you farking liberals know is appeasement and accomodation.

Mark Levin has a link to Reagan’s great 1964 speech up on his site. So much of that speech is relevant *right now*. You can get a clear picture of how the Democrat party has led us down the path to socialism, and as strong as the free market and democracy are, they are finally failing under the burden of socialism (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, government housing, farming, bureaucracy, taxation, government bailouts/handouts…and on and on). What would our Founding Fathers have done under a centralized government behemoth greedily passing on a 33-40% tax burden?

So, I say let’s send this mother down in a ball of flames! Obama is the right man for the job, and will expose the left for their inevitable policies of failure, inhumanity and destruction of freedom.

Sometimes, when things get bad, the only cure is to burn everything down and rebuild from scratch. Today’s citizens have no clue what their freedom is worth, because they have never had to fight for it, or live under the tyrannical rule that has plagued humanity throughout history. Rewind and let’s do it again…next time we’ll add a couple of amendments, one to prevent any welfare state programs and another to prevent taxation, perhaps a flat/fair tax with an absolute maximum and penalties associated with approaching the maximum tax. Do you realize that you pay income tax, social security tax, sales tax, property taxes, capital gains tax and so forth? How many times can government tax the same sum of money and property?

Paint me pleased as a peach. Reap what you sow you G’Dmned liberals. You spineless creeps will be the first ones to bend over for your new masters (live on your knees rather than die on your feet, if you read Reagan’s speech) and I won’t offer a hand to save your treacherous kind. I won’t be the frog that carries the venomous spider/snake on its back across the raging river…

Geministorm on November 6, 2008 at 11:43 AM

Perhaps. But the lack of an attack before the election seems to indicate that the terrorists have wised up some, and realize that attacking us directly only makes us fight harder. They may leave the main land alone, and work on bullying all the chronic doormats.

Count to 10 on November 6, 2008 at 11:36 AM

I attribute the lack of an attack before the election more to Bush’s steadfastness on the issue of terror, as opposed to the terrorists learning their lesson.

The terrorists don’t really have anything meaningful to take away — they live spartan lives, and believe dying for their cause will reap rewards in their version of heaven. In that way, us fighting harder doesn’t scare them, but emboldens them. They literally have nothing to lose on this earth.

I do, however, think that they are wise about attacks. When they attack they want to exert minimal effort for maximum damage, and under Bush’s watch I don’t think they see that happening. Also, they know Bush will retaliate which means further chaos for their organization.

If an attack happens under Obama’s watch, what is he going to do? Go to war right away against the terrorists? I think they will want to see what he will do first. If he gives them a good scolding, and condemns terrorism with no retaliation, then they know the playground is ripe for the ravaging. If he does retalitate, then they are no worse off than they are right now under Bush. Personally, I do not see Obama reacting as strongly as Bush has, and I bet the terrorists think that, too.

haikusrock on November 6, 2008 at 11:43 AM

ronsfi on November 6, 2008 at 11:26 AM

And your point is? Obama is very weak on defense and our enemies already know this and are salivating at the thought of doing whatever they want without fear of a US response. Our enemies smell Obambi’s weakness and are positioning themselves for when Obambi’s administration takes office, and that’s the scary truth!

So again, what’s your point regarding Bush still being the CIC and our enemies positioning themselves in anticipation of a weak US president?

Although I do not wish any harm to come to our nation I’m afraid with such a weak president we are in for a rude awakening, and when it happens I want to see the looks on the faces of the lefties and Obama-bots when they realize they f-ed up and I will gladly rub their noses in it every chance I get!

No, we haven’t. About half the nation has. If you believe in Christ, and what is written in the bible, there is a lot of prophesy about things that must occur with Israel, and the great delusions that are placed upon the world. We’re looking at a good example because it is only a delusion that would allow people to ignore Muammar Gaddafi basically and very publicly welcoming Obama as a fellow Muslim in June of 08 and it never became a campaign issue.

There isn’t anything that clearly resembles an America that is supporting Israel, and if our nations exist, it is in a very minor role.

From that perspective, the USA must diminish, and I believe that is part of what just happened. For me it is a grieving process, very much like loosing a loved one.

I’m sure the Russians are just loving all of this. They could care less about the importance of skin color, gender or homo-power. They are playing to win, and we just stopped trying to survive.

It’s on Obamabots, and you’ve got nuthin’. Buy the world a Coke, and kiss your butt goodbye. Equal opportunity leadership….nyet.

I should have put the sarcasm tag on that one. The post about the dog catching the car said it better than I did. Bambi will finally catch the car (in January) though I’d guess he’s soon to get some security briefs that it’s a dangerous world. Ones his lofty promises, plans on defense cuts, and genuflecting media won’t / can’t make disappear. Then his arrogant sing-songy voice may sober a bit if he isn’t ooohing nervously with his hand raised for the teacher’s help of the media which largely holds the shape and applies more starch to Obambi’s empty suit. He’ll probably scream again for the UN Security Council to bail him out just before the Russkies wave a veto card.

viking01 on November 6, 2008 at 12:00 PM

Sorry Count, but that has been proven false. America’s reaction to a direct attack on our soil is to crack and elect an appeasing, Marxist, terrorist-loving, America-hating President. America has declared total defeat in electing this vacuous moron to the highest office in the land – along with the retarded and treasonous cronies they filled Congress with. America has spoken. Affirmative Action is more important than anything else. Great.

progressoverpeace on November 6, 2008 at 11:52 AM

After the terror attacks in the US, we got more Republicans. After they put out video demanding we elect Kerry, we re-elected Bush. They stay silent before the next two elections, we get Democrats, and they get the break they were looking for.
No, I expect them to concentrate on racking up kill numbers where the left here can blame it on us. They will come for us later.

Count to 10 on November 6, 2008 at 12:05 PM

I’m just wondering how the jihadists and Russians will juxtaposition themselves over our rotting corpse. With each salivating over the prospects of overthrowing the last bastion of freedom on earth, you have to wonder whether Russia will make a move first, or whether they will wait until the terrorists commit and then come in behind and wipe them out. I’m betting the latter, so that they can establish a claim on the country by helping us rebuild, and then we become a colony under their iron rule.

I need to go out and purchase some guns while I still have a chance. I can see that I’ll need to do a little training with the girls on survival…

But hey, it’s a good thing Pakistan is such a staunch ally of ours after 8 years of Bush’s foreign policy, isn’t it? I mean all that time and effort (and money) we spent because Pakistan was our ally really helped our foreign policy didn’t it?

We wasted the last 8 years of foreign policy trying to buddy up to a nobody on the global stage that hates our guts in Pakistan. Fantastic.

I couldn’t agree more. We need to stop giving Countries Aid. The ones that spit at us, burn our flag and say death to America. Also, we need to get the UN out of our Country. That is the crucial part of the trouble. The UN is useless, and we need to wipe our selves clean of them.

Folks, I’ve served in that region and sorry but you are way off mark. Without Pakistan, Afghanistan would already be lost. Not a perfect union, but we have relied on their support militarily, logistically and politically. The majority of our supplies, the heavy stuff that can’t go by air, how do you think it gets there? It all come through Karachi. We have something of a SOF with them and the border to continue chase with attack aircraft if an engagement stays on the Afghani side. ANd while he was in power, no matter what else you think about him, Musharraf supported the GWOT with us.

“Jews” and “Hispanics” did not cost John McCain the election, John McCain cost John McCain the election – put the blame where is belongs.

runner on November 6, 2008 at 11:51 AM

I agree McCain did not run the best campaign but to say it was all his fault is not true IMHO.

The hispanic population stabbed McCain in the back, McCain went to bat for them when he and Teddy tried to ram amnesty down our throats, talk about ingrates!

As for the Jewish population that voted for the empty suit (at their own peril) I’m not sure how to explain that except to say maybe they feel insulated here in the states and think they will be safe under THE ONE, which was very shortsighted and illogical thinking on their part.

In time they will learn of their mistake, hopefully not in a horrific way but sometimes it takes something really bad to happen to open ones eyes to the truth, and the truth is our nation is very vulnerable now that they have elected an empty suit.

Russia: Oh go ahead, you know you want to and we wont tell.
Obama: Okay. Here, hold my gun.

These are the orders given to Obama: dismantle the US defenses; let Iran take over the middle east and destroy Israel; let China take over Taiwan and Asia; let Russia take over eastern Europe; let islam take over western Europe; let Chavez /Castro brothers take over latin America. Since the US will be defenseless, we wouldn’t be able to do anything and Obama and his communist cronies in the Senate will deliver the US to the nemy withoung firing a shot. Americans wanted change, well, they will get change all right.

Our military went over 70% for McCain

Young people and refugees from reality went Democratic

Somebody has got to send our soldiers and the Russians copies of action flicks like Independence Day or Jarhead. And maybe one DVD of Senator Obama dancing on Ellen or laughing at Senator McCain so they know he is nobody to mess with! To be sure, if Obama gets the neighborhood organized, big trouble can follow!

Those Black Panthers could easily handle a squad of Spetsnaz GRU.

I actually brought that up to some friends, lots of people inthe media and on blogs say there wasn’t an “October Surprise” but I am convinced the financial meltdown was the October Surprise.

What’s worse is the lefties and the Dems convinced all the brainless (with the help of the MSM) that the Repubs were to blame or the financial meltdown when the rest of us (with more than one functioning synapse) knew the Dems were to blame!

I have to hand it to them, they played the financial meltdown propaganda card like a violin as is evident by the left-tards and independants lapped it up like a kitten lapping up milk!

Speaking within hours of Barack Obama’s election, Mr Medvedev announced that Russia would base Iskander missiles in its Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad – the former German city – next to the border with Poland.

The tough talk starts now; the action will come after the innaguration.

George Bush could and would respond to any tactical move on Russia’s part. But he can’t make any promises about anything that will take more than two months to enact.

It’s up to Obama to start setting the tone. In 44 years of his life to date, Obama has given absolutely no indication whatsoever that he’s capable of saying beyond utterly meaningless platitudes. And he’s demonstrated no ability to actually DO anything – ever.

There is no reason on earth to suspect that he’s going to change anything now, aside of course from a completely unjustified feeling of hope.

logis on November 6, 2008 at 12:50 PM

Hawkdriver,

Isn’t it also true that Russia allows us to use their territory to resupply the forces in Afghanistan? If so, doesn’t make any difference whether it’s President Obama or President McCain, they have us by the ballskies. I don’t think they’ll squeeze as hard as they can: A Moslem victory so close to home isn’t in their interests.
But you never know.

dhimwit on November 6, 2008 at 12:56 PM

You seem to be missing an essential word…it is not “putting missiles in…”, it is “putting a defense missile system…” A big difference, we have made it quite clear that the missiles are for defense only.
right2bright on November 6, 2008 at 10:46 AM

If that’s the case, (a defensive missile system), you should have no problem with Russians manning these sites along side their US counterparts.

cryptojunkie on November 6, 2008 at 10:48 AM

In 1961 The USSR upped the ante in response to the US putting Missiles in Turkey.

Since most believe, (because the gov told them so), that this system the US wants to install is defensive, I guess you would have no problem with Russia installing defensive missile systems in Caribbean countries or Mexico or Canada.
