“Less than fifty years ago, African-Americans were barred from public universities, restaurants, and even drinking fountains in many parts of the country. On Tuesday we came together and transcended that shameful legacy, electing an African-American to the country’s top job — which, in fact, appears to be his first actual job. Certainly, it doesn’t mean that racism has disappeared in America, but it is an undeniable mark of progress that a majority of voters no longer consider skin color nor a dangerously gullible naivete as a barrier to the presidency.”

THE END OF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION!!!!!! YIPPEEEEE

There are a lot of Christians, my wife included, that believe Obama will change completely when he actually takes office. The ideas and actions of the man that ran for President will not be the same ideas and actions of the man that runs the country. And I say in response, just like Jimmy Carter. But of course any criticism of Obama’s presidency will only be the result of racism.

Zaire67 on November 7, 2008 at 12:06 AM

I have no idea whether this will become reality or not. Again, my point is – would young people have supported him so strongly had they realized he planned to require them to perform mandatory civil service?

I’d say so. Here’s hoping they start a serious anti-draft/dissident movement when BO calls them up for civil service.

A lot of American kids are pretty spoiled – they don’t even want to start the dishwasher, let alone whatever Obama has in mind to make them do.

I just think that will be an interesting aspect of all this. I doubt very many of them are aware of this plan of his.

You guys don’t get the ’service’ part.

They know that can’t make it mandatory. How they will do it is with cash. Serve you get a tax break. Don’t serve you get a penalty. No neutral ground. That way the ‘I ain’t gonna do it’ crowd will pay their penalty and continue on with their nintendo and belly-button shots while the government gets the cash. The ones that serve get brainwashed. Win-Win for the Democraps.

A well written point, but I still disagree.

How is a black President going to call “racism” while sitting in the Oval Office? Sure, the MSM is going to do the dirty work for him. But if when his policies fail, can it be even possible for him to fall back on pulling the race card to cover his can? What can he possibly say?

I think the arguement will fall on deaf ears. I’m not worried, Obama didn’t promise me anything, I don’t make enough to be overtaxed and I make too much to get the new welfare. True story from the wife of my co-worker, his wife works at WalMart.

While on break in the break room, I’ll call my friend’s wife Suzy. Suzy could hear a conversation at the next table. One of the four women at the table asked, “so how long do you think it will be before we don’t have to make our house payments anymore”.

Just one small insight to the dissappointment Obama supporters have coming their way.

And I kept wondering why McCain would not use that context when attacking Barry’s associations and socialistic past. He could have found a way to say that we agree with Dr. King, we don’t care about the color of his skin, but we are scared to death about the content of his character. Just another missed opportunity.

Limerick,

But the word “require” was used with regard to middle school, high school, and college age students, and the word “encourage” was used with regard to the elderly.

That gives me pause.

A search for Rahm Emmanuel, book, civil service, and youth led me to this – from 2006:

Democratic Congressional Campaign Chairmen Rahm Emmanuel and Democratic Leadership Council President Bruce Reed are proposing mandatory national service for all Americans 18 to 25 years old. The two men have published a book together called The Plan in which Emmanuel calls for “a real Patriot Act that brings out the patriot in all of us by establishing, for the first time, an ethic of universal citizen service. All young Americans should be asked to serve their country by going through three months of basic civil defense training and community service… Universal citizen service will bring Americans of every background together to make America safer and more united in common purpose.”

That does sound a lot more plausible. I assume there will also be labour laws against firing government employees. That way any attempts at reversing socialism could easily leads to strikes or even riots as by then people won’t want to give up the status quo.

I worked very hard all my life to achieve my standard of living. Through Military service, corporate takeovers, repeated family relocation, life threatening health issues and on and on. When i finally reached the point where I’m able to live comfortably in my dream home, along comes a man that says I’m making to much money give some it to that ignorant lazy guy down the street who signed a mortgage he could never afford. The government that was suppose to allow me to enjoy the fruits of my labor is about to take a large chunk away.

I can only compare my feelings to the final scene in Apocalypto. You just went through the fight of your life and the future for you and your family looks bright. Then here he comes.

I will continue to distrust and dislike this man unless I see irrefutable evidence that he is not the man I saw during the campaign.

jeanie on November 7, 2008 at 12:37 AM

When the checks do not come, I don’t think there is a thing that the press can say that will make people pissed off. The people expect their homes and gas to be paid when they go to the mailbox expecting a check and it never comes things might get ulgy for the dems.

Wait til people find out that Obama is bringing back the draft. They were scared that Bush was going to do it, wonder what they will think when Obama does it. Oh little do the people know they will have to suffer he already stated so in his address on Tues. There was no applause to that statement. I don’t think the press can shield him when the checks do not come.

Brat4life on November 6, 2008 at 11:48 PM

They already think taxes are patriotic. That little gem “sacrifice” Obama mentioned? That was no slip or gaffe. It was put in there to get people talking and wondering what sacrifices Obama could possibly have in mind. While people are wondering about it, their opinion leaders will insinuate that, say, just a little less use of gasoline would be good for the America. Just a little sacrifice. Then, like those campaign workers who got paid a fraction of what they earned, they’ll be told that they should be content with it, because their sacrifice contributed to Obama’s victory. Sacrifice is good for America, see.

Sacrifice is the new patriotism. The pie never grows for those people, always remember that. No other way to enforce rationing, and there will be rationing. And if you try to argue that individuals working independently can grow the pie, you’ll be publicly humiliated for being a greedy throwback to that discredited, hopelessly outdated, and meanspirited heresy called Capitalism.

Oh and the press? So far, it looks like they’ll be 100% complicit.

You guys should read this. Obama just hired the guy who came up with this stuff – years ago. And the writer of this piece seems pretty uncomfortable with what he’s learned about it (he discusses it with Jonathan Alter):

capitalist piglet on November 7, 2008 at 12:39 AM

Another part of this ’service’ concept to watch is the medical cost. The moment you are on Uncle Sugar’s clock he becomes responsible for you. Think there is fraud in the Workmans Comp system now? You ain’t seen nothing yet.

Limerick on November 7, 2008 at 12:42 AM

I must add, the writer seems most paranoid that Republicans will force him to serve. Of course, he wants no part of that.

Irony is so ironic.

My question is — what will the government do to the children who refuse to comply? Withhold transcripts? Financial penalty? Both?

haikusrock on November 7, 2008 at 12:43 AM

You know………….. I have a feeling that after the briefing that President Bush just gave Mr. Obama and Mr. Biden today, I mean just exactly what is going on and not what his handlers have been telling him for the past two years,

“Come in and sit down, President-elect, and don’t talk until we are finished, if you have questions, write them down, and we will try to get to them at the end…….. Because I am still Comander in Chief, and this is what the fu%k is going on………..”

his reaction was…………………………

“Holly Shit!”

………. if that isn’t enough to slap him down from his temple to deal with the “real” truths in this world, and not just what he has read in a book or heard as lip service from anarchists……… he will either understand the responsibility that he has just taken on and all the complexities, he, as top manager and Commander in Chief will have to deal with,………………. or he will believe his own press, and will become a disaster within the year.

Seven Percent Solution on November 7, 2008 at 12:45 AM

Another little snip from there, FYI:

Newsweek reporter and Mandatory National Service supporter Jonathan Alter volunteered to answer questions about the plan during an online open forum sponsored by Newsweek last week. I instant-messaged something about freedom of choice: “This is still America, right?” was the gist. “What about our right to pursue the life, liberty and happiness that generations have experienced as pulling tubes and watching cable in a pigpen college apartment for six years?”

Young adults will have choice under mandatory national service, he replied, once they’re enrolled, “they can join the military or perform some other form of work. That is a choice.”

I doubt I was the only instant messenger thinking that that was nothing at all even like a choice, that it was more like some Guantanamo rock and hard place than it was a choice.

I think the “voluntary” part is that you get to choose from various tasks, or military service.

The writer of this article is really tripped out about the idea…Alter tells him that this is how they plan to deal with the Iranian problem – the kid suggests sanctions instead, and Alter tells him sanctions would be too hard on the Iranian people.

BTW,..can you please post a link for all of us to read where the leader of Iran said if we talk with him he will not wish death upon America?

Here’s what’s got me weirded out.

I am a History Channel addict, and last night, I watched a program about Hitler and Nostradamus (not that I necessarily go for the Nostradamus stuff, but the Hitler Channel is always interesting to me, as the daughter of a WWII vet).

Nostradamus’ quatrain that refers to the third antichrist (supposedly after Napoleon and Hitler) contains the name “Mabus”; not that “Mabus” is the antichrist, but he is mentioned as someone who will die just before all hell breaks loose or something. (I don’t pretend to “get” Nostradamus, and I am more someone to put my faith in God than any man’s prediction.)

Here’s the weird part.

Barack Obama has an advisor who was the ambassador to Saudi Arabia under Clinton, a former governor of Mississippi, named Ray Mabus.

http://www.barackobama.com/2007/05/22/mabus_to_advise_obama_on_middl.php

Too. Damned. Weird.

I hate to sound kooky – I’m honestly not, I swear – but that’s just so weird.

Well, I read a lot of Nostradamus in the late 80’s and early 90’s, and was well aware of the Mabus thing. I’m not a real believer in either Nostradamus, or Revelations as anything to be taken literally, but the people who are REALLY into it, say that Nostradamus rarely used the precise name in his major predictions, even if he could have.

I actually considered that G.H.W. Bush might be the guy he was writing about. Bush the Elder was born in Massachusetts, called his home Massachusetts, despite pretending to be a Texan to run for office. Massachusetts postal abbreviation is MA. A fevered brain could easily make the connection MA + BUSH= Mabus.

I’m not gonna worry about it. If it is the ‘end times’ at least life will get interesting for a while. I don’t for a minute believe I’ll get “Raptured”, but I’m not going to ‘take the mark’ either. If “they” want to do something about it, I’ll take some of them with me.

LegendHasIt on November 7, 2008 at 2:29 AM

I’ve heard some fairly big bloggers say that basically, they will give Obama the benefit of the doubt. While I see thier point, I disagree.

If right-of-center bloggers don’t take Obama on (and I mean in a fair way), no one will. If Obama glides through the first few years relatively unscathed (as I think he will…leaving the nutty stuff for later), then it will be too late to prevent a second term where you will see the biggest left turn in American politics ever.

We do no need to give Obama a break. We do not need to “wait and see” what he does. We can and should be criticizing his appointees as soon as they are made. We can and should be slamming each and every pronouncement.

Look, it gives me no pleasure to say this, but the blogosphere is the only place in the next few years where any potentialy damaging story or critique will come from. The mainstream media? Are you kidding me?

Prepare the battlefield folks. If certain bloggers don’t have the stomach for it, they should blog about recipies instead (I am looking at you Instapundit).

Waterboy on November 7, 2008 at 3:28 AM

To battle Americans! I am just reading reports that Obama is dredging the bottom of the Chicago River (and a few Clinton underpants) to install into the whitehouse.

And his theme for inauguration day: “A New Birth of Freedom”

Pardon the French, but when the f**k did freedom die in the U.S.

DON’T LET OBAMA SET THE NARRATIVE. Don’t fall for the crap of letting Obama & cronies congratulate you for bipartisanship (meaning if you agree with him you’re wonderful and he’s wonderful, like the bullshit he just dished at Bush because Bush was doing his duty in ensuring a smooth transition during a time of war).

There is fodder enough already in these last 48 hours to fire more than a few shots.

Get to it!

Looking at the article on Drudge that basically says there was no high increase of voters this year…

Republicans could have ran Cheney as President, with Palin as Veep, and would have won. Problem is we lost the conservative base.

Enoxo on November 7, 2008 at 12:28 AM

McCain had a nice working margin in mid-September, until the Fannie Mae debacle. He lost a few points due to conservatives staying home, and several more when independents switched to Obama.

If Mac had named names at that first debate, and led the House GOP in opposition to the crap sandwich… Cindy would be picking her china patterns.

Mr. Wednesday Night on November 7, 2008 at 4:46 AM

I’ve been thinking about it, with all the calls to forget Obama’s past and focus on the future. In 1972 Nixon won by a landslide, both electoral and popular vote wise. Should people just have put the past aside and focused on the future?

Phoenician on November 7, 2008 at 5:14 AM

You guys don’t get the ’service’ part.

They know that can’t make it mandatory. How they will do it is with cash. Serve you get a tax break. Don’t serve you get a penalty. No neutral ground. That way the ‘I ain’t gonna do it’ crowd will pay their penalty and continue on with their nintendo and belly-button shots while the government gets the cash. The ones that serve get brainwashed. Win-Win for the Democraps.

Limerick on November 7, 2008 at 12:13 AM

So will African-Americans from the inner cities now start volunteering?

Phoenician on November 7, 2008 at 6:37 AM

Could not agree more. The “Bush lied, people died” meme was particularly onerous.

So, should we start a list of clever little sayings to offer KOS as daily fillers?

Yoop on November 7, 2008 at 12:17 AM

Based on his falsehoods at saddleback about his position on the Born Alive Infancy Protection Act, I’d say right out of the blocks on inauguration day this bumper sticker would be appropo.

Funny Story with my Democratic office mate. (Conservative Dem with a little buyers remorse already over the Charlie Rose interviews) He’s sitting behind my desk waiting for me to go to lunch with him and he sees me typing a post in MS Word to cut and paste to a comment on HA. Obama always has the red line under it and he says, “You do know you can add his name to the dictionary and it’ll stop doing that?”

I told him that I liked the fact that MS Word realizes there’s something wrong with him too.

Childish? Absolutely! Will I add him to the dictionary? Absolutely not!

I get it now you KOS Kids. This is actually kind of fun in an adult laying down on the carpet and flailing your arm and legs in a tantrum in front of your parents kind of way.

In his famous speech at the Lincoln Memorial 45 years ago, Dr. King said “I have a dream that one day my children will live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” Let us now take pride that Tuesday we Americans proved that neither thing matters anymore.

I think this is the far better quote of the day from the Iowahawk article.

Sigh. Dr. King wouldn’t have ever thought that America could have ended up here. The content of Dr. King’s character is aligned with God’s, thats the power of his message.

The one…you don’t even know, unless you look at his associations.

Scary.

I went to the gun store yesterday, the shop owner told me in 14 years in business, he has never sold so much ammunition in a two day period let alone a month since he has been in the business.

I fear we are truly headed for some very bad times.

Viper1 on November 7, 2008 at 7:24 AM

But of course any criticism of Obama’s presidency will only be the result of racism.

Right_of_Attila on November 7, 2008 at 7:36 AM

A lot of American kids are pretty spoiled – they don’t even want to start the dishwasher, let alone whatever Obama has in mind to make them do.

Uhm like dude, 100 hours of community service? Whoa, that’s like 100 hours I won’t have to waste on myspace.

angryed on November 7, 2008 at 7:37 AM

I opposed Obama’s plans before the election.

They have not CHANGEd.

Neither will my opposition.

profitsbeard on November 7, 2008 at 7:37 AM

Let’s face the reality of this election, race played a role in The One’s rise to the White House, but IMO the deciding factor which resulted in so many votes was none other than money.

The One bought this election pure and simple, it wasn’t the battle cry or Hope or Change, it was money. And the slick part was he didn’t even have to use his own money. It was you and I, as tax payers, who bought his new house in D.C.

All the promises, i.e., health care, education and so on, was done using our tax money. And then there was ACORN, also sponsored in large part by tax money.

All these “informed” voters need to remember the old saying “there is nothing in life free”. There’s going to be a bill come due in the near future, I just hope this nation will be able to pay.

SPIFF1669 on November 7, 2008 at 7:38 AM

I’ve been meaning to buy a gun for many years. Never quite did it for whatever reason. I AM buying one this weekend. Maybe even 2 or 3. The shit is coming and we better all get prepared.

angryed on November 7, 2008 at 7:39 AM

I seriously believe this is the end of white guilt.

JellyToast on November 7, 2008 at 7:46 AM

I, too, was a little disheartened to hear some talk radio hosts and some bloggers talking about “giving the benefit of the doubt” to the new president.

I am really hoping that they mean that they aren’t going to be screeching moonbats like the lefties, but that they are going to be critical when needed.

Perhaps they just don’t want to scream out “William Ayers” everytime Obama makes a decision (if he makes decisions) but rather take on some higher tone of debate.

Since Tuesday night I have been going back and forth about just how awful this is and trying to convince myself that it won’t be so bad. His appointments send signals but we aren’t going to know which direction this is truly going until January.

myrenovations on November 7, 2008 at 7:54 AM

You know, all this stuff bothers me and scares me: raising taxes, confiscating guns, emboldening enemies around the world. But what really bothers me is how willingly so many people in this country will go along with it, and say either a.) it’s not that bad and for our own good and anyway pay me, or b.) Bush was just as bad so now payback is a bitch, you knuckledragger.

It really is hard to be sanguine about all of this.
