Palin on the leaker: A “small, evidently bitter type of person”

posted at 1:41 pm on November 6, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Frum thinks he knows who that small, bitter person is, but the fact that he has his own issues with her colors the assessment. Meanwhile, an important footnote to last night’s fingerpointing speculation: Randy Scheunemann, Palin’s chief loyalist within Team Maverick, apparently was not fired by the campaign for leaking, contrary to CNN’s report yesterday. From today’s Times piece on the “civil war”:

Advisers in the McCain campaign, in suggesting that Palin advisers had been leaking damaging information about the McCain campaign to the news media, said they were particularly suspicious of Randy Scheunemann, Mr. McCain’s top foreign policy aide who had a central role in preparing Ms. Palin for the vice-presidential debate.

As a result, two senior members of the McCain campaign said on Wednesday that Mr. Scheunemann had been fired from the campaign in its final days. But Rick Davis, the McCain campaign manager, and Mr. Salter, one of Mr. McCain’s closest advisers, said Wednesday that Mr. Scheunemann had in fact not been dismissed. Mr. Scheunemann, who picked up the phone in his office at McCain campaign headquarters on Wednesday afternoon, responded that “anybody who says I was fired is either lying or delusional or a whack job.”

More from CNN:

Scheunemann, who was widely viewed as a supporter of former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, admitted people were trying to push him out of the campaign. But he said that [Michael] Goldfarb, his ally, was incorrect when he told CNN that Scheunemann’s blackberry had been taken away — although he does admit that his e-mail account had been “temporarily” cut off.

Michael Goldfarb, a McCain press aide and Scheunemann ally, said that senior McCain aides were mad at Scheunemann — and wanted to fire him — but he insisted they stopped short of that, and instead simply turned off his campaign communication.

Goldfarb said Scheunemann was in the office on Saturday. He was, however, noticeably missing on election night when top aides to John McCain and Sarah Palin gathered in Phoenix, Arizona.

CNN claimed no fewer than three senior McCain advisors as sources for the original story; if you’re inclined to point the finger at Nicolle Wallace and her husband, Mark (who also worked for the campaign), that still leaves one other leaker; Steve Schmidt would be a prime suspect, assuming the rumors about him being sour on Palin are true. Now that the leakers’ story about Scheunemann being canned has been debunked, why doesn’t CNN burn them and out them?

O’Reilly offered the ‘Cuda half an hour on Monday’s Factor today to answer the charges. Judging from what she says below about having nothing to say, I’m guessing he’ll be turned down. Good news, though: If you need your daily Palin fix going forward, the Atlantic’s most famous blogger is promising to stay on the case, doubtless until the shocking true story of Trig’s matrilineage can finally be told.

Blind coward. It is not an insult to Palin to say she is no Reagan. No one is. She has some Reaganesque talents, but that is not the same thing. I think she was plucked out too early. She was raw political talent that still needed molding and shaping. This whole sordid ordeal has put her back years, and she might never recover. That is a loss to us all.

Let’s stop pretending that these people have gone “rogue” and acting without McCain’s knowledge. McCain choose these “senior advisors” because they think and act just like him. And just like him, they are more comfortable attacking conservatives than they do liberals.
McCain’s maverickness was established when he decided to focus his attacks on his fellow Republicans – George Bush in particular – and shower his love on his liberals friends across the aisle.
If McCain doesn’t agree with all these vicious rumors now being leaked by his “senior advisors” about Sarah Palin, then he should say so. Until he does, I will take his silence to mean that he is reverting back to type, in an attempt to re-establish his once cozy relationship with the drive-by-media and the democrat party.

This shit is in the New York Times, Newsweek, ABC and Fox. The New York Times story actually suggests the GOP is going to investigate Palin. The Fox stuff is essentially saying McCain selected a borderline retard to be his running mate. And it’s all coming, not from KOS, not from Sullivan, but from McCain’s fucking staff.

Hey, I warned early on (before she was picked, fwiw) that whe would be a disaster, for all the reasons we now see. She scared away moderates, was plagued by scandals, and does not appear ready for high office.
….
Big S on November 6, 2008 at 2:25 PM

“Scared away moderates” is a matter of opinion, and highly doubtful considering the moderates pick was running at the top of the ticket.

“Plagued by scandals” is flat wrong. They tried to dig up a scandal on her. She was exonerated. And I think we all know that if the msm doesn’t try to dig up a scandal on a conservative, it’s only because they don’t see him/her as a threat.

“Does not appear ready for high office” is also a matter of opinion, and highly suspect since most of those saying it actually believed Obama was ready for high office.

Palin is a big threat to anyone with presidential ambitions, so expect to see more dirt thrown out against her.

She was in fine raw shape at the beginning, until the campaign got around her and said “Stop being so spontaneous, stop rocking the boat, and don’t dare mention Wright, Ayers, etc…”. So, for six weeks, she played the old Washington game, and failed.

And then, a few weeks before the election, she finally started speaking her piece. She started nailing Obama where it hurt. And right about then, rumors started coming out about discontent with Palin in the McCain campaign. I’m sure it was pure coincidence.

MadisonConservative on November 6, 2008 at 3:08 PM

So while I can understand your frustration (we are all frustrated right now). I simply do not agree with your interpretation of events. McCain should be backing Palin right now as well. She is under attack. A man of character would just do it.

He should also be making calls and putting muzzles on his former staffers. What they are doing is going to implode this party if they keep it up. There are a number of people that are not distinguishing themselves right now and I can clearly see why America does not trust them.

Palin and Jindal are both so young and have so much potential. Let ‘em run their states for a little while an if they don’t decide to run for President in 2012, maybe another GOP’er does and they get cabinet appointments to build on their cred. Either way, we are lucky to have them in our party. I was for McCain, but his silence is really deafening right now, and extremely disappointing.

Part of McCain always knew he would be going back to the Senate – where he is probably better suited and can continue to be a maverick RINO. He loves compromise and had real trouble going for the jugular, even in a Reagan jocular manner. Palin, on the other hand, was talente on the attack and will always be, a force to be reckoned with who can eviscerate with a lilt and a smile. Hence the herculean efforts to destroy her. McCain, fearing permanently alienating his old Dem work buddies, stayed away from placing blame on Barney Frank and Dems for the Fan and Fred debacle. McCain also seems okay in allowing Palin to be pilloried post election. What’s that about? Although Sarah is consistently standing by Mac, where is McCain’s loyalty to her? Chivalry. Loyalty. Dead?

.
The media made Palin an attractive target, so that’s where they’re trying to place the blame.
.
The media… I don’t care if it’s Fox, MSNBC, the AP, or the local high school newspaper, shouldn’t get by on “anonymous sources”. Identify the source and provide the exact quote for the accusation you’re making. Otherwise, you’re slightly less credible than TMZ as a news source.

What has become of us — to this nation? How far have we fallen? This is disgraceful. Get rid of these neocon secular Republica elite anti-God conservatives who have helped destroy the conservative movement in America. They are THE PROBLEM, not Sarah Palin! Here’s what matters! Here’s what’s important. Does Sarah Palin love the LORD? Yes! Is she is pro-Israel? Yes! RIGHT THERE YOU HAVE THE PROTECTION OF THE LORD!! God blesses nations that love Israel! Now, who can defeat you under those circumstances? NOBODY!!!! Does she love her country? Yes! Is she a conservative? Yes! She’s pro-gun and anti-abortion. And she has taken positions on other issues whether it’s spending, or whether it’s taxes, or whether it’s regulation, that generally are quite conservative. She has also seems to be an honest person in terms of fighting corruption. So what’s the problem? Huh? Answer: There is no problem. These are the same sick evil people who hammered Governor Huckabee all through the Republican primaries saying he was a liberal and all sorts of vile stuff (Socialist, worse than Hillary, would destroy the Republican Party!). This is unbelievable! I mean, this is uh,… this is… they are so disgusting. It’s time for change in the GOP or this nation will continue to fall fast.

apacalyps on November 6, 2008 at 3:35 PM

Look, these accusations are either bs or they are true (or mostly true). If they are bs, then as Ace says, let’s find out who the leakers are and make sure they never work again (or at least don’t support any candidates that they work for). If they are true, it’s important to know that too. I like Palin; I was hoping that McCain would pick her, but never thought for a minute that he actually would. But she did not help herself in the Gibson, and especially the Couric, interviews. Many people are inclined to believe this sputum in great part because of those interviews (and not because of the evil editing – she gave some awful answers). She needs to come forward and clearly demonstrate that these accusations are bs; or she’s through, IMHO.

The prophetic timeline is intimately tied to Israel. The fear of many is that Obama will not be a strong supporter of Israel, and the Islamic nations will attack, which sets up the stage for the return of God to miraculously defend Israel and they rebuild the temple in Jerusalem.

Long, long discussion, but timelines are possibly very soon or it could be 50 years down the road. My personal suspicion is around 15 to 20 years, but that is based upon certain events proceeding at their current pace. I could be completely wrong.

Marine_Bio on November 6, 2008 at 4:01 PM

I’ll give you a hint. It’s NOT JOHN MCCAIN.

wise_man on November 6, 2008 at 3:09 PM

Apparently, John McCain is on board with this behavior. He was quoted by a military friend as having joked about the difference between a pitbull and Sarah Palin. It sounds like his feeble sense of humor, if we look back on his jokes about gorilla rape and Chelsea Clinton.

I hate his guts now, and I want to know who these former staffers are. I am actually glad McCain lost now. Palin 12.

I am so ready to move to Alaska. Maybe when Tim gets out in 2010. I love my country, but I need to get away from it for awhile, and Alaska is far enough away to satisfy me.

Besides, I hear the governor up there is fantastic! : )

Anna on November 6, 2008 at 4:01 PM

All I know is I was staying home till Sarah came on the ticket. I believe that McCain would of lost by a real landslide without her.

Big Wally 47 on November 6, 2008 at 4:03 PM

That blowhard O’Reilly is just pissed because she never appeared on his show. I quit watching after O’Reilly refused to explore the Ayers/Annenberg Challenge to any degree. He had emails giving him the info but he chose to mostly ignore it. And when he had Stanley Kurtz on, O’Reilly kept saying that Obama was just trying to “help folks.” O’Reilly only uses stupid stunts like having a producer chase someone down. They never respond but it makes O’Reilly look like he’s actually doing something.

As for Sarah, she’s smart to ignore this crap. Who cares what a bunch of losers, who didn’t do their jobs, think or say?

Deanna on November 6, 2008 at 4:05 PM

Istm that there is a contest for the base of the conservative movement within the Republican Party.
Sarah Palin has resonated, while other Republicans?, not so much.
Throw off the claims of the MSM. They are not fair reporters.
If they despise Sarah Palin she’s worth another look.

If Palin is as bad as these cut throats are saying this proves what the Dems said about McCain is true, that his judgement sucks. She was doing quite nicely before she ever became involved with the campaign since then she has been torn to shreds, her credibility is being challenged up in Alaska and we could be seeing the distruction of a promising career

Chicostein on November 6, 2008 at 4:17 PM

This is all so silly. I don’t believe any of it. I heard Palin herself say that is just gossip. The media are just a bunch of jackals. So why play their game? Do what Palin did and just ignore it.

Terrye on November 6, 2008 at 4:18 PM

Chicostein:

The very fact that McCain picked her just tells you that he is not going to trash her now. There is nothing in it for him to do that. And as far as that is concerned, she did not have to accept the offer for the VP nomination either. The press just went after her because she was unknown and they could get away with defining her. That is a lot harder to do with someone everyone knows.

Terrye on November 6, 2008 at 4:20 PM

I must admit, on a few occasions, I’ve misspoke and said Africa was a “country” instead of a “continent”? Was it because I didn’t know it was a continent? No.

It was because of comfortable familiarity. Obviously in the world of specifics, and politics is pretty specific at times, it can be labeled as a gaffe, but in everyday conversation not many people would call you on it. When people address Africa it is usually addressed as a single entity.

“That guy is from Africa”, “We need to do something about hunger in Africa”, or “There is political unrest in Africa”

Can anyone claim that a majority of people will properly describe just WHERE in Africa they are talking about? Not generally. Everyday Americans generally just say “Yeah, I heard about that happening in Africa” instead of “Yeah, I heard about that happening in the Democratic Republic of the Congo”. Because people are comfortable with generalizing Africa as a single entity instead of properly dividing the continent up by its borders and specifying. I could easily see how someone would mistakenly say “country” instead of “continent”.
It’s a pretty weak argument against Palin and one that really shouldn’t be given any legs to stand on.

Why doesn’t some journalist/blogger solve this problem by doing a Lexus-Nexus search for all articles containing “Palin” and “NAFTA” published prior to August 2008 (i.e. before McCain named her to the ticket). The woman negotiated a $40 billion gas pipeline through Canada with a Canadian company. Does anyone seriously think she doesn’t know the countries in NAFTA? This is absurd. Just do some simply research. I don’t have access to Lexus-Nexus. If I did, I’d look it up myself.

ramrocks on November 6, 2008 at 4:30 PM

Wow, we must really be sucking if we are looking to Jindal to save the party just because he is also a minority and young. Why don’t we try to first define what a conservative movement should stand for and then pick someone who represents those ideals?
Maybe we can even find someone who contributes to the movement like RR did. He shaped the movement and made it stronger for whoever wanted to run under its banner. GB (both of them) just used the conservative movement to get into power but never contributed to it. After almost 20 years it has been left to die or has morphed into new-conservative. I say neo-conservative is just democrat lite and is not the platform we can ever regain a majority of American people on.

wise_man on November 6, 2008 at 4:54 PM

If John McCain does not soon put a stop to this nonsense he will be proved to be the most ungrateful, counterfeit s0b imaginable.. He chose Governor Palin and would have not have fared as well as he did without her. She and her family went thru hell to support him .. And this is the thanks she gets from him? His organization sent me a solicitation for a donation in 2000. I returned it without a check but with a letter addressed to Senator McCain personally. I told him that while I respected his service to our country I would never support him because of his assaults on both the 1st and 2nd amendments and he just as well save his $ because I would never donate. I doubt he read it but someone must have because I have never heard from anyone associated with him since. I was inclined to donate after Governor Palin was added to the ticket but decided to wait a few weeks to see how things turned out. Muzzling her was a big mistake but then almost everything about the campaign was a big mistake. I think we should trade McCain to Harry Reid for Senator Lieberman. At least we know where Joe stands.

Do not criticize the crypto-Marxist machiavellian Prince Barry, whatever you do.

Let’s go back to Palin’s wardrobe.

What a scandal that was!

ACORN? Voter fraud? Nah…

Is Trig a space alien?

Does Sarah hunt wolves from a biplane in a bathrobe?

Obama’s weasels must be giddy with megalomania as they spread this dreck.

It’s the Marxist, stupid!

If John McCain does not soon put a stop to this nonsense

What is he supposed to do? Go take a baseball bat and bludgeon the guy responsible until he can’t speak any more? This a*hole leaker disgruntled ex-employee betrayed McCain and Palin. This story isn’t true because McCain hasn’t acted. It isn’t true until this person comes to the cameras and provides proof. Palin is innocent until proven guilty. McCain is innocent until proven guilty.

It disgusts me that so many in my party will dive into the gutter with this trash and believe this story from this idiot and claim that this is somehow McCain’s fault, when McCain didn’t say anything at all – it was this idiot making the false claim. For the love of God grow the F*ck up you pathetic idiots.

wise_man on November 6, 2008 at 5:24 PM

Bottom line: If Johnny Mac had named names on the Fannie/Freddie thing, and joined the House GOP in opposing the crap sandwich, he’d be Prez-elect.

Sarah was picked to energize the right, while McCain supposedly captured the moderates. An ideal balance, except Mac’s bungling of the sub-prime “crisis” turned off enough of both groups to cost him the election.

MadisonConservative on November 6, 2008 at 5:36 PM

The charge she didn’t know africa was a continent is ludicrous. And carl cameron actually changed his story between the 1st report and the second.

On the second one it was clear that the leaker was talking about an incident where someone was talking about South Africa and someone else thought they meant southern africa(or vice versa).

The person relaying the tale is using a misunderstanding to smear her.
