Palin on the leaker: A “small, evidently bitter type of person”

Frum thinks he knows who that small, bitter person is, but the fact that he has his own issues with her colors the assessment. Meanwhile, an important footnote to last night’s fingerpointing speculation: Randy Scheunemann, Palin’s chief loyalist within Team Maverick, apparently was not fired by the campaign for leaking, contrary to CNN’s report yesterday. From today’s Times piece on the “civil war”:
Advisers in the McCain campaign, in suggesting that Palin advisers had been leaking damaging information about the McCain campaign to the news media, said they were particularly suspicious of Randy Scheunemann, Mr. McCain’s top foreign policy aide who had a central role in preparing Ms. Palin for the vice-presidential debate.
As a result, two senior members of the McCain campaign said on Wednesday that Mr. Scheunemann had been fired from the campaign in its final days. But Rick Davis, the McCain campaign manager, and Mr. Salter, one of Mr. McCain’s closest advisers, said Wednesday that Mr. Scheunemann had in fact not been dismissed. Mr. Scheunemann, who picked up the phone in his office at McCain campaign headquarters on Wednesday afternoon, responded that “anybody who says I was fired is either lying or delusional or a whack job.”
More from CNN:
Scheunemann, who was widely viewed as a supporter of former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, admitted people were trying to push him out of the campaign. But he said that [Michael] Goldfarb, his ally, was incorrect when he told CNN that Scheunemann’s blackberry had been taken away — although he does admit that his e-mail account had been “temporarily” cut off.
Michael Goldfarb, a McCain press aide and Scheunemann ally, said that senior McCain aides were mad at Scheunemann — and wanted to fire him — but he insisted they stopped short of that, and instead simply turned off his campaign communication.
Goldfarb said Scheunemann was in the office on Saturday. He was, however, noticeably missing on election night when top aides to John McCain and Sarah Palin gathered in Phoenix, Arizona.
CNN claimed no fewer than three senior McCain advisors as sources for the original story; if you’re inclined to point the finger at Nicolle Wallace and her husband, Mark (who also worked for the campaign), that still leaves one other leaker; Steve Schmidt would be a prime suspect, assuming the rumors about him being sour on Palin are true. Now that the leakers’ story about Scheunemann being canned has been debunked, why doesn’t CNN burn them and out them?
O’Reilly offered the ‘Cuda half an hour on Monday’s Factor today to answer the charges. Judging from what she says below about having nothing to say, I’m guessing he’ll be turned down. Good news, though: If you need your daily Palin fix going forward, the Atlantic’s most famous blogger is promising to stay on the case, doubtless until the shocking true story of Trig’s matrilineage can finally be told.

The “leakers” have the advantage, since too many people already perceive Palin as an idiot. A lot of Republicans who stood up for her while she was on the ticket will be less inclined to expend any effort to defend her now. I think she’s done.

She’s a tough lady and I’m sure she can weather the current foolishness from anonymous staffers. I worry for her in the long term as the Beltway crowd — and our new Dark Lord’s cronies — will clearly be gunning for her.

Why? Heaven forbid the woman actually speak whats on her mind. As for my own personal opinion? I’ll have to agree with her. The staffers claiming this nonsense are just trying to remain politically relevant now that their man lost the race.
I’ll add two more adjectives to Palin’s description of these Small and Bitter people: Shallow and Childish.
Aurvant on November 6, 2008 at 1:50 PM
Rush made a great point– McCain would go out of his way to denounce anyone who said “Barack Hussein Obama” (ie, Bill Cunningham). But on this? Silence.

Amazing how so called Republicans, throw Palin under the bus. This party is screwed. The women who actually galvanized people and brought in people to vote, and she is getting ripped by her own party, as bad as the media did to her. How sad
MDWNJ on November 6, 2008 at 1:50 PM
One more thing. Running Palin in 2012 is an automatic victory for Obama. He already beat her once. Do you want to run Adlai Stevenson against Eisenhower for the second time? “Surely the American people will come to their senses and vote our way next time.” Come one. It’s time for a re-think.

Marcus on November 6, 2008 at 1:53 PM
Those attacks on Palin were vicious smears. No reasonable person would not “know” Africa was a continent. The woman has four school-aged kids. Each of them took geography and history classes. Doubtless, she helped the kids with their homework. This is basic stuff and even if she never learned that Africa was a continent growing up, I’m sure she would have encountered basic world geography through her kids.
The comment about her not knowing who was in NAFTA is likewise stupid. She’s the governor of a state that shares three land borders with Canada and is cut-off from the rest of the country. People don’t think she’s aware of NAFTA? Really?
Outlander on November 6, 2008 at 1:53 PM

Neither you nor I ever saw the real Sarah Palin campaigning until maybe the last few days before November 4th. She connects with the voters. When McCain was clearly getting the nomination, I thought I’d was going to have to leave the Presidential vote blank on my ballot. I’m one of the voters, hardworking, entrepreneurial, and I’ll vote for her.
AubieJon on November 6, 2008 at 1:55 PM
My friend and I made a site where people can leave comments for Sarah Palin during the election. I think maybe its even more important now. http://www.supportsarahpalin.us/?p=3 Tell Sarah Palin she has your support. She needs to know normal people support her and I think it would be good for the elites in the RNC to see this too =P

In that case, Schmidt is only harming himself further. I doubt politicians looking for the services of a campaign runner are going to hire a guy who likes to shiv his clients.
Slublog on November 6, 2008 at 1:56 PM
If you’re going to start dumping on Schmidt for his idiotic campaign decisions, at least acknowledge that the selection of Palin was among them.
Big S on November 6, 2008 at 1:56 PM
Even without this nonsense she had zero chance of coming back from Alaska and running in 2012. I give her a helluva lot of credit for the positive things she did in the campaign and believe me, without her McCain would have lost by 10 or 12 points.
As for these snobbish punks in the McCain campaign, show yourselves and quit hiding up Carl Cameron’s ass. You should be ashamed of yourselves and I hope other candidates take notice of these scumbags and keep them from poisoning other campaigns. Particularly this bitch Wallace who didn’t like her fragile ego bruised.

The MSM is doing their job very well. Obama is still in camapign mode. He tried to destroy Palin before the Republican convention; he tried to destroy her during the campaign. He failed. He will stop at nothing to destroy her during the next 4 years. It’s almost like Obama’s obsessed with her. The MSM are only doing his bidding by ridiculing and smearing Sarah; again make no mistake this is orchestrated by Obama and his team. That the MSM use the supposed quotes from McCain staffers only serves to deflect from the masses who is behind the disinformation and Goebells-like propaganda. McCain’s RINO staffers are simply tools that Obama can use and will be used to serve his purpose of destroying the credibility of Republican Party as a viable alternative in 2012.

its part of the already established narrative to bury Palin. Basically that she is dumb as a rock like bush, can barely tie her shoes and should never be put in Washington.

I respectfully disagree. Obama ran against McCain with the help of the do-nothing MSM. It is nothing short of miraculous that McCain finished as closely as he did and that is due to Sarah Palin. Make no mistake about that.
Obama ran and no one was willing to vet the man. He ran unchecked and that’s why he won. McCain was running against Obama AND the MSM. Sarah made it a close race (popular vote-wise.)

That goes to show that McCain is not a good leader. If he surrounds himself with untrustworthy people, you will get burned. For all you know they are like spies employed to help McCain but were actually feeding info for Obama’s advantage. Look at Pres. Bush with his reaching across the isle. He appoints McClellan who is not worthy of the job, he bites him back. Look at the other people Bush appointed like Colin Powell to State Dept. Good people like Libby gets burned. What about the district attorneys who were not fired when he got into the oval office like what Clinton did, when he wanted to fire 3 of them, the wanted to indict him. This is politics 101 and a good leader should be wary.

Actually, I never thought of him as a “black” candidate: I always thought of him as a socialist, defeatist, appeaser, economic illiterate, etc. There are a lot of good reasons to dislike Obama. Race was never one of them.

Hint: it wasn’t because of his cheerful demeanor.
Bush picked him because he knew pretty much everything about Cheney so there would be no surprises. McCain and his camp barely knew about Palin and it showed during the campaign.
Speedwagon82 on November 6, 2008 at 2:02 PM
Dude, this is why we lost– you bought into media spin. Parties rarely hold on to executive power for 12 years, let alone with a financial crisis dangling. The idea that if McCain’s veep was different– oh! if he just had Pawlenty!– we’d make up a 7 million vote gap is a joke. Besides, Obama didn’t run against Palin, he ran against McCain, who talked about earmarks and pork during an econ crisis.
Our precious, moderate, honorable McCain lost– as did every moderate Repub incumbent who ran for congress bashing Bush (ie, Smith, Sununu)! We need to make a contrast for 2012– no one’s gonna vote for Coke II if the original is there (Obama). Palin, unshackled from McCain, has the optimism and passion to do so, to make clear contrast. That’s why we’re all ticked idiot McCain staffers are trying to smear her before she can even get off the ground.

The selection of Palin was a good decision. How she was handled was poor. They didn’t play properly to her strengths. They never should have tried to make her seem like an expert on foreign policy, they should have used every inquiry on her credentials to highlight Obama’s inexperience.
After the convention, the ticket had a huge bounce. After the VP debate, they got another smaller bounce. She drew in major funds and drew large crowds. The media paid attention to everything she said – she should have been used to push whatever theme of the day the campaign had. Heck, nobody cared about Ayers in the media until Palin went off on him.
And anyone who thinks that the McCain response to the financial crisis didn’t sink his campaign wasn’t paying attention. Palin did not lose the election for McCain.

I must admit, on a few occasions, I’ve misspoke and said Africa was a “country” instead of a “continent”? Was it because I didn’t know it was a continent? No.
It was because of comfortable familiarity. Obviously in the world of specifics, and politics is pretty specific at times, it can be labeled as a gaffe, but in everyday conversation not many people would call you on it. When people address Africa it is usually addressed as a single entity.
“That guy is from Africa”, “We need to do something about hunger in Africa”, or “There is political unrest in Africa”
Can anyone claim that a majority of people will properly describe just WHERE in Africa they are talking about? Not generally. Everyday Americans generally just say “Yeah, I heard about that happening in Africa” instead of “Yeah, I heard about that happening in the Democratic Republic of the Congo”. Because people are comfortable with generalizing Africa as a single entity instead of properly dividing the continent up by its borders and specifying. I could easily see how someone would mistakenly say “country” instead of “continent”.
It’s a pretty weak argument against Palin and one that really shouldn’t be given any legs to stand on.
