This just in... from a press conference:

"Vice-President-elect Biden, there are some who have suggested that you and Obama now have a mandate. any comment?"

"Oh lord no. Look, Obama is a happily married man, and is only interested in women. He would never want to go on any man dates. That's ridiculous."

(sorry, couldn't resist).

I think you can make the argument that the mandate Bush has in 2000 (with the numbers he got) was not the same as the one Barack got in 2008.

I think not that not all mandates have the same strength.

All that "51% is not a mandate" stuff was just garbage dredged up by lefties out of their Bush Derangment Syndrone. They had no problem with Bill Clinton, whose best was 49%, implementing his agenda. The Constitution nowhere relates the president's powers and duties to his margin of victory, either popular or electoral.

Best wishes to Mr. Novak, but this is a lame take to come back with. A 2 to 1 margin in the electoral college is a thumping, particularly given the last few presidential elections.

I can't view Youtube on this machine, but what I was trying to say about McCotter is that he doesn't have the same kind of
broad
appeal. That is a God given quality, that you just can't learn.

That being said, as a conservative, he is absolutely Hilarious. Particularly when he goes down the "Learning to Speak Democrat" lesson.

It just doesn't appeal to those in the middle who are easily swayed by an attractive persona. That's what swayed so many towards Obama, and is the same thing that swayed even more towards Reagan. The difference is genuine substance. Reagan had it, Obama does not.

All presidents have mandates — to pursue the policies that won them election.

Well, there's the rub. Aside from skin color, what "policy" did Obama run for? Basically, a completely inarticulate description of CHANGE. In other words: whatever the holy living Hell he decides to do from one moment to the next.

Some self-proclaimed conservative commentators say that's not a problem. They're counting on the wise old heads in Congress to "pull Obama to the right" - away from his radical leftist roots.

Yeah, good luck with that.

So our great airliner will be piloted and manned by the Democratic Party for at least 2-4 years. Since we are all on that plane, let’s hope for the best.

carbon_footprint on November 6, 2008 at 10:03 AM

So how about we storm the cockpit, take over the controls, and if we can't land the plane safely, crash it into the South Side of Chicago.

Let's roll!

Sorry Carbon, that analogy was just too good to resist!

Today's WSJ Opinion Journal has a commentary re some of the "feudal lords" of Congress who plan to use their positions of power to impose their own mandates on BHO. The point of the piece is that presidents may come and go, but the real whips of change are found in our entrenched members of Congress. What these old warhorses have planned is not necessarily in the interest of BHO's agenda (if he is indeed being conciliatory) nor that of the nation.

Chuck Schumer--banking expansion via nationalization
George Miller-- 401Ks and other private retirement plans
John Conyers-- indictment of Bush for war crimes
Henry Waxman-- usurping chair of Energy and Commerce to impose more stringent anti-global-warming legislation
Pete Stark-- expansion of federal TARPs

Is BHO strong enough to rein in these ambitions, or will he simply be a pawn in this power play, agreeing to legislation that he approves of?

The article is very disturbing in its implications. We must remind congressional members of the loyal opposition to eliminate or reduce the damage that will be wrought by these power-mad Dems.

Ok, the NYT libs didn't think 1980 was a mandate. If you look at the maps of 1980 and 1984, its pretty stunning. 489 followed by 525 electoral votes is a massive proportion.

1980
1984

Simple evidence can be ignored at will, and willful ignorance abounds.

One thing I have learned is the sure way to screw somebody is to do exactly what they ask. If BO wants to pull out of Iraq immediately, all the Republicans should vote “Present”. If he wants to raise taxes, the Republicans should all vote “Present”. If he wants to outlaw off-shore drilling, the Republicans should all vote “Present”. Let him get his way on everything, see how the economy and the country look in four years, and get ready for a massive change in administration

He has a mandate to give 95% of people a tax cut, lower energy costs, not touch the 2nd amendment, bring us all together, pay for our gas and mortgages, change the world and you get my point. Obama set expectations so high he has no where to go but down. The Idiot did it to himself and I am going to sit back and enjoy the fall.
