Newsweek dishes new dirt on Palin and Nicolle Wallace

Nothing too shocking, but useful background.
Palin was being handled by Nicolle Wallace, a veteran of the hardball politics of the Bush-Cheney campaign (she had been a press-bashing director of communications). Recruited by Schmidt, Wallace had come from a stint as a commentator at CBS. She had the disastrous idea of making Palin available only for a series of high-profile media interviews, and then overprepared her with a cram course of talking points. It was embarrassing to watch Palin grope for answers to Katie Couric’s questions—and thanks to YouTube, more than 10 million voters witnessed it. “She is not a dumb person,” said a senior McCain adviser. “She is an intelligent person, but we made her so uptight.” Some old McCain hands on the campaign were sharply critical of the Bush-Cheney alumni brought onboard by Schmidt. Wallace and the others had not only botched the handling of Palin, in the view of the old McCainiacs; they didn’t understand that McCain needed to be McCain. (Wallace took responsibility, in an edgy kind of way: “I keep trying to get someone to write that it’s my stupid strategy,” she told a NEWSWEEK reporter. “I should be fired. I’ve offered my resignation twice in the spirit of Dwight D. Eisenhower, taking responsibility, and no one will take it.” In truth, Wallace was in a tough place: Palin was no longer taking much coaching from her. Feeling that she had been overmanaged for her one-on-one debut with a network anchor—Charlie Gibson of ABC—Palin had rebuffed Wallace’s help with her Couric interview.)…
There was grumbling that Palin had jumped the gun by bringing up Ayers at her rallies before the campaign could properly do the groundwork with a rollout strategy and ads. (At one rally, she had talked about Obama “palling around with terrorists.”) Palin was mad at her handlers. Reportedly, she felt that Wallace and Schmidt had poorly coached and advised her. One adviser later speculated that she impulsively talked about Ayers because she felt thwarted—she had really wanted to bring up the Rev. Jeremiah Wright. (Actually, Palin was feeling hurt and angry over the tabloid treatment of her 17-year-old daughter Bristol, and decided—on her own—that Ayers should be fair game. McCain’s advisers were working on a strategy that would launch an Ayers attack the following week, but McCain had not signed off on it, and Salter was resisting.)
The campaign’s internal polls showed that those lower-income swing voters in industrial states had not forgotten about Wright. In the view of some of his advisers, McCain had a chance to really hurt Obama by dredging up those videotapes of his longtime pastor crying “Goddam America!” But McCain did not want to. He did not want to do anything that smacked of racism.
An unnamed source who’s probably Randy Scheunemann told Politico two weeks ago that Schmidt and Wallace would end up being the ones trying to tear Palin down. Whether that’s because the source had reason to believe they’d leak or simply because he/she knew there was bad blood between them and Palin and expected some post-campaign sniping, no one except Politico knows. Two months later, though, I’m unclear how Palin was “overprepared” for questions about what periodicals she likes to read or why Russia’s proximity to Alaska enhanced her foreign policy credentials, as she suggested to Charlie Gibson. Those are the questions that killed her, not anything having to do with, say, naming the deputy prime minister of Kazakhstan.
The LA Times has new dirt too, related mainly to the shopping expenses, and unsurprisingly it’s linked (indirectly) to Schmidt, Rick Davis, and Nicolle Wallace. Here’s an interview she did today in four parts with local radio in Alaska. She is, more than ever, a woman in demand.

I hope she runs a national campaign again, if for no other reason then to leave the whole country with a better estimation of her political instincts.
I am sorry about what is going on now, but as York said, the McCain camp was filled with losers.

So let me get this straight
Palin is an idiot because somebody said that she said blah blah blah and weasel boy Cameron told the mannequin shep about it
but we just elected a man who thinks that the U.S. has 60 states and his running mate who said that FDR went on tv in 1929 and told Americans about the depression
nice ..

An email my wife and I sent:
Dear Governor Palin (and family),
My wife and I wanted to take a minute to thank you for stepping into what was probably the harshest political battle of your career. We sincerely pray that you’ll not let yesterday’s set back remove you from the national scene. We’re citizens of Indiana and are appalled that you didn’t carry the state but it like many others is populated with people who don’t remember the John F. Kennedy line, “ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for it” statement. So Indiana citizens are lined up with their hands out waiting for the magical tax reduction for taxes they never paid.
We wanted to congratulate you on a hard fought campaign and pray you’ll continue to do well. The citizens of Alaska are lucky to have you and you will have our support should you again step up to a national challenge. To be completely honest, you were the reason we voted for the Republican ticket.
Sincerely,
Onager on November 6, 2008 at 9:14 PM
Bingo. McCain’s temper affected the quality of the people picked for his staff. Let’s see Palin pick one and compare the results.

This is to be expected…but it’s a sad end to this campaign. The ‘Cuda was awesome in the campaign..it would have never have gotten as far as it did without her. So, those engaging in this stuff now, had better realize what they are doing to their future. Sarah is loved by a lot of conservatives…they are playing with fire if they want a future in politics.
AUINSC on November 6, 2008 at 9:15 PM
If she’s intelligent, then why is she so ignorant? This is the woman who couldn’t answer basic questions from Couric such as, name one Supreme Course other than Roe vs. Wade.
How can someone so ignorant, to use a euphemism, possibly be ready for a serious role in the nation’s government? Saying cute things about hockey moms and pigs isn’t adequate, believe it or not.
I think it’s time for the party to turn to conservative leadership with a brain. It’s time for Bobby Jingal.

We all seriously need to contact Carl Cameron at Fox and ask him when he’s going to interview McCain staffers about what a sucky campaign they ran by refusing to go after The One on his associations, his record, his college transcripts, etc.
This is painfully obvious. They screwed the pooch, and they’re trying to make Sarah take the hit for it.
Surely there are at least a few staffers who thought well of her. When are we going to hear from them?

As for Sarah bless her, she gets to return home to Alaska and breath a deep sigh of relief that this experience is behind her and her family is safe.
She may run for a Senate seat but the pettiness of the press and some high profile blogs may keep her from another run at the White House.
For her sake I hope so.

“Two months later, though, I’m unclear how Palin was “overprepared” for questions about what periodicals she likes to read or why Russia’s proximity to Alaska enhanced her foreign policy credentials, as she suggested to Charlie Gibson.”
AP, after a long campaign, your memory is jumbled (or mine is). The periodicals question was in the CBS interview and the Russia comment was in ABC’s. If you will remember, Gov. Palin’s on air remarks were edited so to make it look like she said something that she did not in order to make her look bad. You are perpetuating that goal. I wish that Gov. Palin had either asked the CBS anchor if she was serious in asking such a stupid question or loud talked her for trying to portray Alaskans as backwoods illiterates.
We’ll find out in the coming 2 years what kind of standard bearer Senator McCain will be. While the next 2 yrs. will be Governor Palin’s chance to gain more ‘gravitas’ amongst the snobs in the republican party.
In the meantime, I’m still waiting on Senator McCain’s admonishment of the gossip allegedly being dispensed towards Gov. Palin by people he hired and therefore is responsible for. He was quick to denounce statements that were directed towards BHO that he deemed to be inappropriate. He needs to put a stop to this nonsense now or be tainted himself.

Oone of the more depressing things from this election was watching fervent Obama supporters try to articulate why they supported the man.
Sadly, “he’s black” was about the only reason most could identify. Judging a man by the content of his character indeed.
Though, I did see one young woman actually give a reasoned answer. Namely, that Obama would advance socialism in America.
To this day I cannot decide which was more disturbing.

Joe Biden, self anointed genius, has also been spectacularly wrong on all the major foreign policy issues of the last 35 years. This is a man President Obama will turn to for counsel when the Russians, Iranians, and Chinese inevitably “test” him.

Mike Honcho on November 6, 2008 at 9:39 PM
This is so childish and typical of women who back stab with glee. Palin came to McCain without any staff to help her and wholly dependent on those who felt she did not deserve this. The VP candidate should have been groomed before and not sprung on the candidate herself. She did not have enough clothes and I watched what she wore immediately after the announcement and she was wearing the same skirt and shirt and just switching jackets. They did not let her get more from her own stock. The whole family plus the boyfriend of Bristol needed outfitting.
Good clothes are important to make a good impression especially for a woman. Because women watch carefully what other women wear and they notice the beautiful outfit she wore to the nomination night of McCain, it was obvious that staff had been sent out shopping. She did not have a moment with preparing for an acceptance speech herself for the first time in front of a very large audience and a national TV audience. She pulled off the best speech I had ever seen with glee and confidence. She showed that she was the best politician and speaker to come along to GOP in decades.
The GOP would have lost by a greater margin if not for her. She was the star of the campaign and her statement about Ayers and others was what galvanized the campaign. She dragged McCain to fight and he got better after that in his own speeches.
However I was never happy with McCain since he has damaged the GOP so many times and did the McCain Feingold and the amnesty bill that he did not know what evil poison that was in the bill he foisted on the country. He was surprised when he was told what actually was in the amnesty bill.
He was erratic with shutting out the President and at the GOP convention, the one person who is the head of the GOP. That disrespect bothered me. The GOP was not against President Bush, but McCain was. When a GOP candidate is ashamed of his own brand that spells doom to the race.
Palin did everything and plus what she was expected to do to bring out enthusiasm and the base. Then he jumped at the bailout and said he suspends his campaign with three weeks to go? Obama accusation rang very real about his running off in all directions and changing his mind. McCain as a senator was just one of a hundred but he was the only GOP candidate and he made that choice so running back to DC and declaring every one should suspend their campaigns was idiotic. He did it over hurricane Ike and damaged the GOP convention that did not bode well for his executive ability as President.
I agree with Redstate make sure these disloyal snakes never get work again at a campaign. They need to be outed and burned. Let them run Democratic campaigns from now on.
RAH on November 6, 2008 at 9:39 PM
I realize that many professional political operatives have a loyality only so long as their guy/gal is in contention. It’s also understandable that rabid “centrists” would hate a real conservative on the ticket. Nevertheless, all the graciousness that McCain exhibited in his loser speech is undermined by the fact that his staff was just chomping at the bit to trash the VP nominee.

The names will be named, and the price to pay will be huge. Sarah Palin is not a lawyer; does not have a degree from a college elitist consider acceptable; and she is dead set on cleaning house in DC and exposing “all” guilty people from both parties; and she has Conservative values and was not afraid to show them off.
Like many have said before, both parties are now full of elitist thugs who are taking us to the same cliff, only one party is taking us there on a jet, while the other party is taking us there on a bus.
John McCain and all who helped run his campaign are guilty of running the worst campaign in the history of our nation. Sarah Palin brought the energy, and is the one responsible for McCain pulling close in several key states.

Hey Bayam.. How much public speaking experience do YOU have in front of people. I’ve given speeches in front of a couple thousand and that is a bit scary. There is an almost endless array of questions that can be thrown at you in an interview in front of millions of people. She did dang well.
That being said we were visiting Niagara falls canada. It was a family trip. absolutely nothing illegal. The canadian customs officer asked “what city and town do you live in”… I drew a complete blank for about 15 seconds.. Never had anything like that happen before. I finally blurted out the answer and she gave me a deserved “you americans are morons ” look.
also, as others have stated, the press gave a pass to 57 states, gird your loins, stand up joe, my muslim faith, etc. They threw softballs. Did you hear anyone ask obama or biden any similar questions.
Why didn’t obama have the cajones to go on Hannity and Colmes?? Hannity offered to donate 10 grand to obama’s poverty stricken brother in Kenya.
yep, Putin and the Russians were real impressed with obama. On day 1 they moved short range missles to the Polish border.. Putin is shivering in his boots…
bullseye on November 6, 2008 at 9:49 PM
Allah, it was the McCain campaign that first said that alaska’s proximity to russia enhancd her foreign policy credentials.
I believe that does enhance her credentials (just as the governor of a state bordering mexico would be more aware of relations between mexico and the U.S. and the nature of the mexican government) but lets face it – the press wasn’t going to accept this argument. Any competent campaign manager should have seen this.
She was left in the position of having to defend their statement, and anything she said would be dismissed or ridiculed.

If Bush is so dumb how is it he managed to fool the Dems to vote for the Iraq war? How did he manage to kick Kerry’s ass in ‘04? I am so tired of the whole “Bush is dumb” angle.Like I have said before, I will treat Mr. Obama the with the same amount of respect the left has treated Pres. Bush the past eight years….

Great Sarah Interview from today
Firebird on November 6, 2008 at 9:55 PM
What slays me is that naysayers pick on Palin answering a couple of questions awkwardly, and then you have Obama talking about 57 or 58 states, that he sees dead people, redistribution of wealth, thinking Iran is one of three tiny countries that means us no harm, not knowing that Russia has veto power, etc., and then there’s Joe Biden with the foreign policy expertise that leads him the conclusion that Iraq needs to be divided into three separate and smaller countries, the same policy experience that recalls how we, with the help of France, drove Hezbollah out of Lebanon.
Even Michelle Obama said Barack should not run for President because he “hasn’t done anything yet.”
And Palin is the one we should be worried about?

*rolleyes*
Had Sarah mentioned a specific magazine etc, that would have opened the floodgate to other irrelevant questions designed to trip her up. What she didn’t do was pivot to her strengths and the fact that she didn’t know how to do that rests entirely on her staff.
Someone explained the role of the National Guard unit that Sarah commands and it’s role as a first line of defense against any Russian hostility. She is briefed on issues that no other governor is privy to. Again, the failure of her staff to explain that after the fact is on them, not Sarah.

Somebody not bright enough to come up with a user name really shouldn’t be commenting on other people’s intellect.

And, FWIW, the only thing he’s done since that interview is run for President. And I don’t think campaigning qualifies as experience, either.

Palin shouldn’t have given idiotic answers during her first national interview if she didn’t want to have a her image tarnished. Did the media over exaggerate it? Yes. But she gave them the ammunition.

Would this be the same NewsWeek that had Obama on the cover 7 times and McCain only twice? Or was that Time? Little matter. I’m going to use the Obama tag line, since it seemed to work for him…
“This is just a distraction”.
The Dow dumped about 900 points in the two days following the election, and the only news fit to print is campaign infighting, hurt feelings, and axe’s that needed grinding?
How is the helping my kids? Because for the first time in my life, I’m not proud of my US news media. NewsWeek is a mean magazine….
Makes me want to hurl.

McCain was and is a political wimp. He of all people should know you don’t beat the enemy by being nice. I heard it said on Rush today, the next time he reaches across the isle, go over and have a seat. Sarah Palin had it right. Take it to them and don’t let up. If the GOP don’t STFU and embrace her and other true conservatives like her, they will be out of power for quite some time.

Bottom line is Palin is squeeky clean. They can’t pin any real dirt on her. So they have to resort to this sort of BS. There are petty, small people on both sides. Palin should simply ignore them. DD

Thanks to Allahpundit for being yet another mouthpiece for the lefty news media, thus perpetuating the smear on Palin.
Good job, Allah! With friends like you…
fossten on November 6, 2008 at 9:59 PM
This whole contretemps makes no sense. McCain himself took the blame in his concession speech. All these operatives should have taken that cue and simply left the stage quietly. It’s not that hard, really.

Allah is Michelle’s token liberal.

It’s unfortunate that the McCain campaign seems to have no idea how important this woman was to him. There was NO enthusiasm for McCain prior to this choice, and anyone who thinks McCain energized this base is sadly mistaken.
Palin understands what her appeal is, I think. She rightly objects to being overcoached, because that’s not who she is, and her supporters don’t want to see a scripted automaton. Her strikes into forbidden territory during the campaign were appropriate and effective.
The comparisons to Reagan, I believe, are accurate. If, after recharging her batteries, she’s in the mood to prepare to be back in the national political spotlight again, I feel she’ll still be enormously effective.
The liberals in the party kneecapping her is only proof of this.

Anytime anyone brought up the Russia comment I brought up all the Obama and Biden stupid stuff and then emailed them the whole Gibson interview so they could see the whole answer.
I saw where someone on Ace started this stand up for Sarah group. If that really gets going or somone here knows how to start one I’ll join.
If she wasn’t so good and charasmatic in that non creepy way they wouldn’t be coming after her like this. The McCain people bashing her probably know that if she ran again she would not work with them again. Thanks to them and Mac, to some extent, the Hero lost to the Zero! Has he come out and defended her yet?
It is so obvious that was she has accomplished could not have been accomplished by anyone who isn’t intelligent. She has “Don de Gentes” which is a Spanish way of saying people who meet her – respect, love, admire, and are drawn to her…except for ugly women that is…

At least, John McCain is consistent….he’s never failed to disappoint me.
It’s shameful about him not standing with Sarah. If Sarah was a Democrat, he would instantly come to her aid. At least we don’t have to watch him reaching across the isle crap.
I voted for Sarah!
