Change you can give your personal information for

I decided to take a look at the website for the incoming Barack Obama administration, The Office of the President-Elect — and it looks an awful lot like a campaign site.  It announces that “change has come to America”, even though Obama is still more than two months from taking the oath of office.  It’s replete with campaign slogans on Iraq, the economy, and other issues.  None of this is terribly new, and it all looks like it got transplanted from BarackObama.com.

However, this site has a .gov top-level domain (change.gov).  That is reserved for “qualified government organizations and programs”.  The incoming administration technically has no status as a government organization or program until January 20, 2009.  The “Office of the President-Elect” doesn’t exist within the government.  Furthermore, the use seen at the site is clearly promotional for Barack Obama and Joe Biden, and should have been kept at their own campaign domain rather than set up as an official US government site.

And why are they using a .gov site to compile mailing lists?

Why does the government need to collect e-mails and addresses from citizens in order to share their stories with the President-Elect?  What purpose does the OPE have for this information?  Are they hoping to build a list to sell to political allies, or perhaps just to telemarketers to help pay off the deficit?  Since this is hosted as a government site, I think they need to explain what official use they will make of this information.

If we’re going to have a perpetual campaign in the next administration, they could at least have the decency to use their private-sector domain name.

And so the government-backed propaganda begins. Don’t be surprised if this stays up as a pro-Obama site throughout his term.

Is it legal for Obama to collect email addresses in an official capacity and then use them for re-election efforts?

Obama is crooked, plain and simple. And priority number one for the next four years is to ensure another four years in office. Bend the rules, break the law – par for the course; remember, it’s the ends, not the means.

Not to change the subject, but regarding Obama’s campaign failing to pay it’s workers in Indiana – pay special attention to the form of payment….pre-paid credit cards.
I don’t know the whole story, but if that doesn’t sound like he’s paying people under the table, I don’t know what does. (http://www.wthr.com/global/story.asp?s=9299280)

In his service agenda, change.gov accuses Bush of squandering the opportunity to recruit volunteers after 9/11…

Americans Not Asked to Serve After 9/11: President Bush squandered an opportunity to mobilize the American people following 9/11 when he asked Americans only to go shopping.

then when you click “Service Plan” OR “Find A Way to Serve” on the bottom menu at my.change.gov you get…. blank!

These guys are not going to play by the rules!

Why should they? Look what gentlemanly conduct did for the the GOP. Obama in 1996, the Senate race, against Hillary and in the general election used every dirty trick in the book to win.

Do you really think they are going to stop using a tactic that has brought them everything they want?

How stupid do you think they are?

Does anyone know of any good books that discuss the principles of conservatism in detail? I have winter break coming up and I figured I’d educate myself instead of vegitate for a month. I’m going to read Common Sense by Thomas Paine as well. If anyone has any suggestions I’d much appreciate it.

Why does the government need to collect e-mails and addresses from citizens in order to share their stories with the President-Elect? What purpose does the OPE have for this information?

rush talked about this today. just like the email list & the text messages, obama will use this for mob rule.

is some conservative democrat senator not falling in line to be part of a filibuster-breaking 60 senators? (Pryor in Arkansas, for example?)

Well guess what? Obama sends out a massive email/text saying “DEM SEN. PRYOR IS BLOCKING YOUR HEALTH CARE! LET HIM KNOW – EMAIL HIM AT XXXXX@SENATE.GOV, CALL @ 1-800-XXX-XXXX”. THen, Obama send another text out to those in the DC area that says “RALLY AGAINST SENATOR PRYOR, OUTSIDE SENATE OFFICE BUILDING IN 30 MINUTES! BRING VIDEO CAMERAS, ALERT LOCAL BLOGGERS, CALL MEDIA CONTACTS!”

Within an hour, the harassment on 1 dem holdout senator is national news, and gets a blurb on cnn’s “situation room”. Chris Matthews & KeithO do segments on this ‘turncoat senator’, and Huffpo has various screeds against this “backstabbing racist Christianist”. later that night Daily Show/Colbert skewer this guy, and run old clips of pryor in that bill maher movie talking about Jesus.

In the end, sen, pryor must cave into media pressure or face continued humiliation. DailyKos starts a fundraising drive to raise money for liberal arkasnas dems (like Ned Lamont), and a primary challenger for Pryor ensues. The local GOP doesnt like it because pryor is a ‘good’ dem, but they realize they might be able to beat the ned lamont-type dem, so they move out of the way while Kos does their thing.

End result: a conservative, non-Obama Democrat is destroyed.

It will be a continuous campaign. Hence, conservatives need to start preparing for 2010 right now also.

Don’t just gripe about stuff. Call your representatives and e-mail those you like from other states and tell them what issues are important to you. I know they do polling on this crap, but I’ve never been polled on anything. Not once.

Me, I think we can make huge gains on health care. Our national defense trump card is kind of off the table since things have been going so well lately, so we have to make roads on domestic issues.

The scariest thing on this website is his Orwellian compulsory voluntary service Plan, America Serves.

He has the audacity to begin by saying:

“When you choose to serve — whether it’s your nation, your community or simply your neighborhood — you are connected to that fundamental American ideal that we want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just for ourselves, but for all Americans. That’s why it’s called the American dream.”

A few paragraphs later choice is no longer part of the bargain:

Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year.

This is clearly part of his Civilian National Security Corps.

Although… they have thanked me for making contributions. I haven’t made any! I promise! I wonder though, if they used my information to hide some illegal contribution or something.

Anyway. This feels like “Big Brother is watching you” type stuff from Orwell’s novels. Obama is creepy. So much about Obama reminds me of Orwell. It’s like he read 1984 in school and said, “Hey that’s what I want to be when I grow up–Totalitarian dictator!”

20, 2009. The “Office of the President-Elect” doesn’t exist within the government.

Uh, that’s not exactly true. It does exist. When the President-elect is determined, the Administrator of the GSA is authorized under statute, to release funds for the Transition Teams. The one coming in is going under the name “Office of the President-Elect.” I know this because I’ve seen the material prepared for the transition. (No, I’m not political, I’m rank-and-file career civil servant.)

GSA is the General Services Administration, the housekeeping, buildings management, and acquisition agent of the Federal government since 1949. Their headquarters is just two blocks west of the White House. One of their jobs is to provide logistical support for presidential transition teams. This would include server space for a website. From the information provided above, this is a legitimate US government website.

Things like Eagle projects and library volunteering count. I think she even got credit for singing in the Messiah at Christmastime.

I don’t think this type of thing is the business of the POTUS however.

I’m sure many kids just grin and get through it. Y’know, the good kids. The kids I hung around? uh, not so much. There would have been theft and falsifying the proof of hours worked at a minimum. The people requiring it would have become a joke.

From the information provided above, this is a legitimate US government website.

manwithblackhat on November 6, 2008 at 7:33 PM

It may be a legitimate US Government website, but it’s not a legitimate USE of a US Government website. There’s a handy link to the Hatch Act on the GSA site and it seems to me using a .gov site to host content from one’s campaign website is verboten.

That’s German, by the way…my choice of language was deliberate.

JohnTant on November 6, 2008 at 7:36 PM

Is it odd that I’m too afraid to click on that link?

CookeyD on November 6, 2008 at 7:32 PM

Me too I’m already on one of the lists so… I don’t know how much they know about me already. Isn’t that stupid?

How do you say “Bingo” in German?

Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year.

AnthonyK on November 6, 2008 at 7:30 PM

If so, then that is a draft and is hard to justify any longer in a free country short of a national emergency.

MB4 on November 6, 2008 at 7:37 PM

Oh, come ON!!!
I thought this was some sort of gag. Then I clicked on the link – and I thought I was going to gag. Is this guy for real? The Office of the President-Elect???????

Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

The Obama Army – and so it begins. I’ll send y’all postcards from the gulag.

For my daughter it was me that fudged a bit. I made her clean out some closets and we took the stuff to Goodwill. I counted about 2 hours for her. They didn’t question it. I guess it really is up to the parents to validate the time and stuff. I didn’t know what I was doing… and she was too young for a lot of things they gave us to check out.

You know….I have always been for the 2nd amendment, but I have never owned a gun.

My dad was a fisherman and not a hunter.

Should I be running out, taking lessons and buying a good 45 caliber weapon about now?

I wonder if, through all the stress of the office, the POSSOBBHO will smoke 3 packs of cigarettes per day?

It this Constitutional….?

Sorry, just had to ask, since it will be constantly asked over the next 4…er…8…er, I mean 10 years..

You’re assuming this will still be a free country once the Messiah-elect is inaugurated.
