Bill Kristol: The leakers are being disloyal to McCain

Because, after all, McCain picked her for VP and so all they’re really doing is dumping on their boss’s judgment. A fine spin, but the longer this goes on without a condemnatory statement from Maverick, the more it smells like it’s being done with his tacit approval. Then again, people are going to assume it’s being done with his tacit approval anyway, so why even get involved?
The important stuff comes at the end, when he points the finger directly at — ta da — Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace. As for the cryptic bit about the campaign searching through people’s e-mails for evidence of leaks, that’s almost certainly a reference to Randy Scheunemann being fired/suspended/quarantined. Per today’s NYT piece, he and Kristol are pals and certain unnamed McCain advisors allege that he’s been leaking to him steadily.
Exit question: Would someone married to a commercial fisherman, who governs a state that trades with Canada, really not know which countries belong to NAFTA? Click the image to watch.
Update: In Schmidt’s defense, according to the big NYT magazine piece that dropped a few weeks ago, he was the one who first mentioned Palin as a potential VP in meetings. Doesn’t mean he hasn’t soured on her since, but he clearly wasn’t anti-’Cuda from the get go.

As to Mr. Kristol, you are so 2000. Please just go away and stop calling yourself a part of my party.

No, it looks like the media and their audience on righty blogs is making a big deal out of nothing. What is McCain supposed to do, call a press conference because the media will not shut up?
I do not know anyone in the real world that is even slightly interested in this.

And if McCain jumps in the middle of it, will we need to hear from Palin? And then if the press keep yakking and the blogs keep linking will it just go on and on and on?
The whole thing is ridiculous. What is next? Will Carl Cameron leak that so and so anonymous make believe person said that Sarah Palin thinks the earth is flat?
You know that she knows what countries are in NAFTA and that Africa is a continent. silly.

What the heck is wrong with these people? We fought long and hard to win the house and senate in 1994, we suffered with Bush in 2004 and got him reelected, and idiots in the GOP and their supposed conservative pundit friends ruined it. Now, they want to backstab each other? It wasn’t the ideas that were the problem, people – it was the candidates who pretended to believe in the ideas and then proved with their actions in power that they were lying that cost the house, senate, and presidency.
Vashta.Nerada on November 6, 2008 at 5:12 PM
he is right. This wont hurt Palin’s future at all. It just makes people like Wallace and Schmidt look TERRIBLE.

On FOX News now. Achmadinejad (sp?) offered congratulations to Obama…first time an Iranian leader has done that regarding a U.S. presidential election since 1979, He said that he hopes Obama will change US foreign policy for war mongering and intervening in other country’s affairs.
Bets that Obama will fall for this? Problem with people like Obama is that they begin to believe their own nonsense and get easily conned by others that look to exploit it…Israel (Livini) is already freaking out

UUggghh I actually agree with Bill Kristol. They are being disloyal and what does it say about their own judgement. If they are so worried abbout their careers why are they doing this? I wouldn’t hire either one of them after they trashed part of their ticket and possibly hurt the party. As for Bill Kristol haven’t considered him a real consrvative since his days on GMA.

yeah let’s just ignore the 10% crash of the markets and talk about Palin in a bathrobe.
i am more worried with the impacts of the election not why McCain lost. We all know why he lost. he was a chickencrap and did not think he had a chance to win so he pulled his punches. he wanted to lose with grace and he got his wish.
unseen on November 6, 2008 at 5:13 PM
For the same freakin reason why he spanked every single Republican or Republican organization that used Obama’s middle name! Or linked Obama with Wright! Was he worried about the assumption that they had his tacit approval? Nope. He still went out a condemned.
Weight of Glory on November 6, 2008 at 5:13 PM
I am surprised that Steve Schmidt is involved in that. Schmidt is Karl Rove’s protege. Rove was on Greta last night and was pretty forceful in his condemnation of the smears against Palin… And I know Rove wasn’t a big fan of the Palin pick (I’ll never forget when O’Reilly asked him, the day that her pick was announced, what he thought, and his response was “well, she reflects who McCain is” and left it at that). But, Rove knows enough to STFU.

McCain could talk with one news outlet and declare that he has nothing to do with this and that these staffers are jerks.
He is not doing so, which is a faint admittance that he agrees with these staffers.
McCain is so quick to jump at conservatives and his own constituents when they attack Obama, yet he disappears when he should be defending Palin. This does not bode well.

If there is one thing to learned from McCain’s loss: The GOP does not win elections running moderates.
Winning elections is more about circumstances than trying to appeal to a broader electorate. If Obama messes things up bad (which I believe he will) then the GOP will win in 2012 almost regardless of candidate. The only way we could lose is to run another moderate who forces the base to stay home. I want fullfledged conservatism, so I hope that candidate is Sarah Palin.

jp on November 6, 2008 at 5:17 PM
My big fear: If other reports are true and the senior McCain people internally conceded the election before the third debate, how do we know that MANY of the damaging claims about Palin didn’t emanate from McCain staffers? (e.g. the creationism myth, the library myth, the nonsense about the maternity of Trig) And more importantly, if McCain’s people knew he couldn’t win 3 weeks before the election, then why flail around randomly, waste money, and trash your VP? A true party man would have focused his attention on campaigning in states where there were competitive Senate and House races that could have been won.
Had McCain/Palin spent time in NC and MN, for example, could that have altered those Senate races? What about Congressional races in OH, FL, and elsewhere? What if McCain/Palin waived RNC advertising time and just had the RNC focusing their advertising on those down-ticket races?

For crapsake Kristol. I guarantee McCain did this to get back in good graces with the media. McCain is more than willing to attack Republicans if it suits his ends and his history is replete with examples. McCain is awful, defending him is not in your best interests, Bill.
If you don’t recall McCain’s maverick streak of trashing Republicans after the 2000 election, I’ll provide a more recent example of exemplary character and integrity, Dr. Thomas Sowell.

I believe that this is proof that Gov. Palin took on the old boy establishment within her own party AGAIN (i.e John McCain and the Karl Rove understudies that were running his campaign) and they don’t want her kind in the party. They are doing everything they can to discredit her after they used her to try and save their sorry butts.

McCain is going down for this, he can’t weasel out of this by blaming his staff.
Angry Dumbo on November 6, 2008 at 5:22 PM
Whoever the leaker(s) is/are, they are clearly trying to do 2 things:
a) CYA for McCain basically being a complete and utter tool as a candidate
b) trying to tourch Palin for 2012, so that either McCain can try again or for Romney or whomever…
and I’ll throw in a third…
c) Jealousy, pure and simple; Palin outdrew McCain at rallies, is polished, can speak extemporaneously, and is not afraid to tear into the Marxists from the Left!
They’re all POS’s, and McCain was/is a Tool!

Dale in Atlanta on November 6, 2008 at 5:26 PM
The Schmidt rumor is puzzling. By all accounts, he was one of the main cheerleaders for her selection in the first place. They may have clashed privately but trashing Sarah’s public image reflects horribly on his own reputation. Perhaps he’s quietely positioning himself for a role in Romney 2012…
Ponz on November 6, 2008 at 5:26 PM
Sarah was the only reason I voted for McCain. She didn’t weigh down the ticket-she lifted it. This is the thanks she gets for winning the VP debate, bringing thousands of people to rallies and inspiring the base?
She was vindicated in Troopergate-so will she be with this. Time to field dress some RINOS!

McCain ran a senatorial-style campaign, complete with reknowned across-the-aisle collegiality. Governor Palin is not his esteemed colleague, and he won’t have to work with her in Congress. Old habits die hard.

He opposed the tax cuts which increased revenues 30% (of course he never mentioned that little fact in the debates)
How did campaign finance work for him?
How bout thoses latino votes?
mc Cain is McCain and nothing will change him and I expect him to continue to be a thorn in Conseravatives sides
Why would you believe a Karl Rove protege wouldn’t throw Sarah under the bus. Karl via Bush has not truly governed as a conservative. Sarah is a true conservative. We are gonna have a struggle between those that want to take the party to the center and those who want true conservatism. So the moderates will trash her

Indeed. That is the reason most women are hatin’ Palin too.
These campaign people aren’t brave enough to be actual candidates either. So when they lose they turn into classless finger pointers.

That said, the way this has unraveled the past few days is stomach turning. If these people had come out and said “I got to know Sarah Palin on the campaign trail and she is not as she appears” the message would get out and the truth would be revealed. This backstabbing “anonymous leak” horsecrap is what the left does. Its disgusting.
I like Palin and I am looking forward to seeing her star rise but don’t pretend she’s ‘our Obama’, the next rising political superstar that transcends politics. Sorry, we just don’t operate like that, conservatives are about values and principles, not style and stardom.
Texas74 on November 6, 2008 at 5:32 PM
Those of you lashing out at Kristol over this are nuts. He was virtually Sarah Palin’s sponsor. He was pushing her when 99% of you didn’t know who she was. He argued from weeks before the end that the campaign was doing a horrible job with her, and that she should have been out front as much as possible. He took heat as a defeatist for making precisely that suggestion in as dramatic a way as he could.
Kristol is not the problem. Isolating turncoats and weasels is worth doing, but don’t use buckshot if it means that anyone who merely happens to be standing in their vicinity – maybe trying to help you out – gets taken down, too.
CK MacLeod on November 6, 2008 at 5:33 PM
Arizona needs to do to McCain what Connecticut did to Lieberman – run a solid conservative against him when he’s up for conservative, force him to retire or run as an independent. Show the RINO’s that we want our party back.
VoxRobotica on November 6, 2008 at 5:34 PM
They are disloyal to McCain AND Palin. But McCain was their boss, and he was the one who hired them. They are disloyal, and McCain was their employer. There is nothing wrong with that comment from Kristol.
But I totally expect you to see the worst possible outcome with anything related to McCain and think the worst of him without any evidence to back this up. In other words, you are incapable of making any reasonable conclusion about anything to do with McCain.
It’s time to get a new hobby.

C’mon, to what end? How is the Governor of Alaska relevant to what McCain does in the Senate?
I don’t see McCain’s supposed motivation for smearing Palin. He’s not going to run for POTUS again and he is certainly not in line to be the leader of the Republican party, in any sense. I suppose one could make some sort of argument that he wants to knock down Palin to make room for his pick, but I really don’t see how that’s consistent with his character over the years… and who would it be? Huckabee? Why?
I do think he (McCain) needs to issue some sort of statement or make some sort of gesture that shows that whoever is smearing Palin the press does not speak for him… because as many have pointed out, he is more than willing to issue statements condemning “smears” by Republicans or criticize his own supporters for being unwilling to accept Obama. But that’s it — one statement.

More likely, McCain is relaxing on his porch in Sedona with his cell phone turned off, hasn’t turned his TV on since Wednesday morning, and for the first time in his adult life could care less about politics.

This is the whole point – the whole thing is strictly a diversionary tactic. The only reason the McCain campaign did as poorly as it did was – the McCain campaign. It was horribly run, and the people who are responsible for it are busily deflecting blame from themselves, hoping that they’ll get another campaign gig in ‘12.
Sarah Palin energized the McCain campaign – and, if the MSM is gonna try to smear her two days after the election, the least they could do is to come up with some more believable material.

I am not surprised that McCain hasn’t come out in defense of his choice for running mate. When he knew he was losing, he made the choice to temper his campaign so he could return to D.C with dignity. His Achilles heel is not being liked. He wasn’t about to jeopardize his long-term standing with his colleagues.
I also think he has hesitated to condemn these charges because he is leaving himself open for soon-to-come TV interviews. All the networks have to be wetting themselves to get John McCain on to confirm or refute these rumors. What a great plan to put yourself back in the media spotlight.

No one is blaming McCain for everything bad spoken about her. We are commenting on the spoken words from the anonymous sources in the recent days. It is a relevant subject.

McCain was an old geezer running against a guy younger than most peoples dads. Not really much to explain.

McCain is not responsible for anonymous sources. Because hes not participating in this BS speculation, does not mean he is endorsing this crap.

No, I don’t really think there was any nudging from McCain and Romney – I think it’s a case of “man the lifeboats” on the part of the campaign workers. Rats deserting a sinking ship, if you will.

Hold on a second, people. 90% of you would have no idea who Sarah Palin was if McCain hadn’t picked her and one of her biggest cheerleaders in the run up to the VP rollout was Kristol.
McCain botched his chance for the Oval Office.
Kristol is willing to sell his soul to the NYT for an extra paycheck.
All that aside, they get a pass from me because they are at least partially responsible for the fact that we have a solid leader waiting in the wings.
Let the RINOs self destruct. It’ll be long forgotten by the midterms.

Maybe Salter talked to Politico on his own and McCain has been out of contact with his aides for the past few days.
