Bill Kristol: The leakers are being disloyal to McCain

posted at 5:04 pm on November 6, 2008 by Allahpundit
Share on Facebook | printer-friendly

Because, after all, McCain picked her for VP and so all they’re really doing is dumping on their boss’s judgment. A fine spin, but the longer this goes on without a condemnatory statement from Maverick, the more it smells like it’s being done with his tacit approval. Then again, people are going to assume it’s being done with his tacit approval anyway, so why even get involved?

The important stuff comes at the end, when he points the finger directly at — ta da — Steve Schmidt and Nicolle Wallace. As for the cryptic bit about the campaign searching through people’s e-mails for evidence of leaks, that’s almost certainly a reference to Randy Scheunemann being fired/suspended/quarantined. Per today’s NYT piece, he and Kristol are pals and certain unnamed McCain advisors allege that he’s been leaking to him steadily.

Exit question: Would someone married to a commercial fisherman, who governs a state that trades with Canada, really not know which countries belong to NAFTA? Click the image to watch.

Update: In Schmidt’s defense, according to the big NYT magazine piece that dropped a few weeks ago, he was the one who first mentioned Palin as a potential VP in meetings. Doesn’t mean he hasn’t soured on her since, but he clearly wasn’t anti-’Cuda from the get go.

For some stupid reason I’m still watching Hardball. (I never watch this show). He is still talking about Palin. He knows the election is over right?

terryannonline on November 6, 2008 at 5:53 PM

My vote follows Sarah.

If she is driven out of national republican politics, so is my vote.

vermillionsky on November 6, 2008 at 5:54 PM

wise_man, your response is bordering on the ridiculous so I can only conclude that you are either drunk or self-medicating. Either way, I suppose it’s good that you are only behind the keyboard and not the wheel.

sherry on November 6, 2008 at 5:54 PM

I agree he should make a statement denouncing the talk about Sarah Palin, but he is and always has been the same guy. When you nominate a sofa you don’t get a chair. We need to change the nomination process so Dems and Independents can’t cross over and determine our candidate in the first few primaries. We have an awful lot of work to do.

My reply to your question was appropriate.

“That which does not kill you, only makes you stronger”. And Governor Palin seems to be holding up very, very well. As far as the staffers being disloyal to McCain, they are being disloyal to everyone who gave that ticket their vote. Thanks alot staffers, I guess we could have expected some dignity and class out of you all, but it looks like that’s a pipe dream.

And Obama is tapdancing with the ghost of Marx on his way to power, chuckling sadistically at the follies of the GOP.

profitsbeard on November 6, 2008 at 5:57 PM

McCain so careful not to be “dishonorable” to Obama but now he will let his former running mate fall on the sword ??? very curious

Chicostein on November 6, 2008 at 5:58 PM

would like to see a thread started for us conservatives to talk about our future a serious conversation about policy issues, strategy and tactics……..PLEASE !!!!!!!!!

Chicostein on November 6, 2008 at 5:50 PM

Sorry, some of us feel that a bloodletting is appropriate. McCain is/was/will always be a liability not an asset to the Republican Party. I for one think he should join his colleagues in the Democratic Party so that we can finally wash our hands of this two faced hack.

I voted for the man and actively posted in his favor during the election season, however, I threw every single donation request from the RNC into the circular file. There is only so far one can take the “better than the alternative” argument.

McCain is a painful kidney stone the Republican Party has to pass before it can regain its former health.

terryannonline on November 6, 2008 at 5:53 PM

Disgruntled liberals are going to be unjustly bashing Sarah Palin for the next 4 years, even thought they already danced on her political grave.

And deisgrunteled conservatives here will be similarly unjustly bashing John McCain for things he hasn’t done for the next 4 years as well, even though he is no longer the republican candidate and for president, or figurehead of the republican party and will go back to being a senator from Arizona.

wise_man on November 6, 2008 at 5:59 PM

McCain has been running for President for at least a decade now; I’m sure that it is quite disconcerting for him to wake up and know that he failed. I’m sure that he’s on his ranch, so I’d give the guy a few days. I do think that he does need to come out with a statement soon though. Some of the rumors are just vicious and need to be denounced.

Illinidiva on November 6, 2008 at 5:42 PM

!

Seriously. Sedona, at this time of year, is literally one of the most beautiful places on the entire earth. It’s physiologically impossible to feel stress there. McCain is in a very good place right now, and he deserves a few days to enjoy it. Palin is a grown woman, she can stand up for herself in the meantime.

Your question to me was ridiculous, sherry. You got a ridiculous reply. So. Now that’s taken care of. If you have a serious question, I’ll answer it. But soon. I’ve got to get home.

wise_man on November 6, 2008 at 6:04 PM

To me the most telling part of this all is that – with the exception of a few who were addressing the larger story of the campaign on the record with print journalists – no staffer has stood up yet by name on one side or the other of this controversy. I’d think that a few of them would realize that their own reputations are being trashed by implication, and a lot more definitively than Palin’s could be.

Even if I didn’t have much to do with the Palin side of the effort, if I were Tucker Bounds, Nancy Pfotenhauer, Michael Goldfarb or any of the others I’d be anxious to make it clear that I wasn’t one of the crowd pushing the women and children out of the way while scrambling to the lifeboats, and that I didn’t approve of the practice either. If I were someone whose name had already been circulated among the trashers, I’d be even more eager to clear my name.

At this rate, having ever had anything to do with the campaign is going to be something you wouldn’t want on your resume.

CK MacLeod on November 6, 2008 at 6:05 PM

wise_man, why would you think I have a question for you? You made eye contact with me. Be careful on your journey.

wise_man on November 6, 2008 at 6:00 PM

Honestly, you think McCain’s rhetoric about Obama’s lack of experience was intended to make us feel better about McCain?

As for beating on McCain, I only stopped because the general election required radio silence. I briefly boarded the Straight Talk express in 1999, but experience has taught me that McCain speaks with forked tongue. He is bad news for Republicans because he is a double dealing self-serving snake. In the past 10 years he has rightfully earned the moniker of the democrats favorite republican.

Wise_man, I respect your opinion, but I don’t know why you would defend him.

Other than a fascinating backstory, what does he have to offer our party? As Sowell pointed out in his opinion piece I linked to earlier, there is only so long McCain can dine out on his military record. McCain and his constituents would be better served if he ran as a democrat.

Angry Dumbo on November 6, 2008 at 6:14 PM

As a Palin fan and pretty long term reader of HotAir and Newsbusters it’s pretty apparent to me word is out (probably at DU or KOS) to SPAM any Palin related thread on the more popular conservative websites. Noticed it last night, especially just now on NB, on the Palin threads last night. Since “HUCK is our only hope” I’ve seen more than once I would really hope it’s not coming from that camp. I think it’s KosKids being “clever”.

Marcus on November 6, 2008 at 6:15 PM

It is truly amazing how some people, especially on this board are so attached to politicians. Today alone, I have seen about a dozen people say that they want Palin to run in 2012, and that their vote will follow her and so on. Like she is the last good conservative in the country. Over in the Alfonzo thread, several people are calling for him to run for president. I mean, are we that crappy of a party that whoever comes in front of us and says a couple things we agree with is automatically the best choice for the PRESIDENT of the most powerful country on earth? Eff Sarah Palin, there are better, smarter people out there than her. She served her purpose, and would have made a good VP probably, but my use for her has ended.

Why are you so willing to believe he’s done anything? It shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to call his campaign manager and nip this behavior. McCain was quick to chastize the GOP for running what he thought were offensive ads. How long will you wait – good grief – until the woman has had her entire reputation trashed by her own Party?

Because we are better than the Left we expect more. These are McCain’s people therefore it is McCain’s problem to fix.

katiejane on November 6, 2008 at 6:16 PM

wise_man at 6:07 PM-

Why why why these GOP schmucks help the Prince Obama Disinformation Machine is a mystery to me.

I didn’t want McCain for the Party’s run, but I supported him to the hilt when he was chosen (becoming the nominee before my state had a vote), but his choice of Palin was a bright moment and gave me hope he would be as strong as she was.

I think he feared looking bad against the “historical new black guy” more than he cared to defend our nation’s future against a radical idiot like Obama.

Which makes my original judgment of Mac (Shamnesty; close Gitmo; accept the media’s “torture” meme, ad adsurdum) – as a weak candidate who would not unsheath his sword- sadly accurate.

More concerned with his career than his country, after all.

Palin will shine on.

I wish her a wonderful Thanksgiving. She did her best.

This stuff is important. I think Palin is a completely charming and likeable person and she is a very good local politician. I don’t think she was ready for a national position as important as VP. I think she harmed the ticket if they were aiming to attract independents. Having said that she was McCain’s choice but I wonder how true that really is. Obviously the truth will come out over time.

There sure are a lot of big wig wanna-bes from both sides, nazi’s and evil-doers, who are just scared to frikin’ death of Sarah Palin. Makes me like her more everytime they go to lying and smearing and crapping all over her. I’d suggest the Republican party should be dis-assembled piece by piece and left rotting in a dump somewhere. And I’ve been a member all my adult life. I’ll never become a democrat, but I’ll be dam if the R’s will ever get another dime out of me. I’ll send it all to Sarah and maybe Joe da’ plumber if he decides to run.

Griz on November 6, 2008 at 6:27 PM

Now that Palin doesn’t have to carry McCain’s dirty bath water as a surrogate, we will have the opportunity to see if she really has what it takes to be a major leader in Conservative politics.

I like her, and rather imagine that all of her detractors are either jealous of her and/or feel that she threatens their RINO elite status and/or using her for a scapegoat for their own stupidity and incompetence.

It is up to her now. If she wants to be a leader on the national scene, she is now free to be herself. We will see.

What we really need to do now is to insure that McCain and his ilk are consigned to being no more than a minor footmark in the future histories of America.

How about we don’t participate in helping to destroy a man who is down? He tried, he lost. More people voted for Obama and now McCain is done. You go ahead and beat the dead horse if this makes you feel better about yourself.

I’m not going to gang up on him, repeating and regurgitating what other people are saying that isn’t true. I can’t stop you, but I am not going to stand by quietly as people trash him for something he hasn’t done. This has been a very dark chapter in our party – where the republicans who voted for McCain in the primary carried him to the top, while the other, “better” conservatives failed to get their support. And this was somehow his fault. And they said that the New York Times picked the republican primary winner. BS. The republican voters picked him. He wasn’t a stealth liberal. He has never hidden his approach to politics and government. People on the left lied about him, and people on the right lied about him. It’s no wonder why he lost, that we failed to keep Obama out of the presidency. He lost. All of you people who wanted him to fail using the “SHAMNESTY!!” fear mongering card won. McCain isn’t president. At least stop now. While you are ahead. It’s disgraceful what so many here are doing to one of our own.

Just logged on; if this has been mentioned before, forgive me.

I say we bombard Fox News, who has been running over and over the vicious rumors from unnamed sources about Gov. Palin. I emailed Bill O’reilly and told him “The Folks” were through letting the media, including Fox, define anyone for us, and if we had to, we would get the truth from the blogs.

This is nothing but the left trying to discredit her future in politics because she is such and strong candidate and scares them.

What do you think? We’ve got to take a stand this time; we can’t let them get away with demonizing her or anyone else.

bdestini on November 6, 2008 at 6:41 PM

Yeah, this isn’t right. Sarah Palin worked her ass off for McCain and is getting screwed. I don’t know if she’s “Presidential Material” (maybe in a few years) butI know for damn sure that Chuckabee will NEVER be presidential material, and Romney, as much as I like him, (think he’s handsome) will have a hard time with the whole Mormon thing- so other than Jindal, (who is great, but green) we’re a little, ah, weak. So I will repeat at the risk of being trashed by the group- If McCain is going to let Palin take the blame, I’m glad he lost. Let Obama sweat it out during the next 4 years; From what I’m seeing, he doesn’t stand a chance.

technopeasant on November 6, 2008 at 6:56 PM

Palin is going to hear a lot worse if she intends to stay on the national stage. Plus she’s an easy target right now and much more interesting to dish about than McCain. I mean, who wants to hear about John McCain in a bathrobe?

After 2004, many people thought that John Edwards was well positioned to run for President in 2008. And he spent that next 2-3 years after the election getting ready to do that. Well, we know how that turned out.

I think Palin needs to go home, do her job and work on issues that are important to her. Then we can all see how much appeal she has as a Presidential candidate when we get to 2011. She may not seem all that viable then for a whole lot of reasons. And probably none of those reasons will have anything to do with the crap that’s being said now.

I believe she’s dusting herself off and treating this as a learning experience. She was Mac’s “Hail Mary Pass.” It didn’t work out. She’s probably grateful for the opportunity, the “baptism-by-fire” and IMHO just earned her Masters Degree in “Trash the Conservative Broad with the Down Sydrome Kid and the disfunctional family that has really off-the-wall problems that of course, we perfect people don’t have.”
Is she sorry they lost: OF Course. Does she have very strong opinions as to why? Of course. Does she have too much class to whine and moan and espouse what they are? Again, of course. Is she going to “file it?” (Something I tell my kids when they ask me a question repeatedly and I give them the same answer over and over.) “You ‘bettcha.”
I’m not worried about the ‘Cuda!
She will be back on her own dang terms, thanks very much.
If you like her, support her but don’t whine for her. Rationally point out her positives and move on.

Yes !! this is the type of discussions we need to have our power is not in talking to ourselves alone but coming together in a fashion that makes our voices heard so that we can win over the hearts and minds of people looking for true leadership……our message can win and win consistantly but only if we work hard to deliver that message and support the people that best represent our concerns …………..We no longer can afford to sit on the side lines complaining about this or that while groups like Moveon.org are collecting millions of dollars to rip us apart we better get on the ball

Obama’s Team needs to make up more lies about her quick to distract the rubes and feed the willing Media in order to cover up their crypto-Marxist manipulations of the government and plans for fatally weakening of the Constitution.

Hmmm… Palin bought a $900 silk thong!

Yeah, that’s the ticket!

I don’t think this is anything more than an attempt at payback. It seems pretty clear that Palin wasn’t willing to walk the line these folks wanted her to walk. At this point I’m thinking she probably made the right decision.

I don’t blame McCain for any of this. But I do think he made some very bad choices when he put his campaign staff together. If the identity of these idiots ever becomes certain, I’m pretty sure they’ll never work on a campaign again.

Dee2008 on November 6, 2008 at 8:38 PM

Where do you go to let the RNC know that you’re not going to accept this BS? I’m not finding a link that looks appropriete. I’m amazed that they think they can get away with this- how stupid do they think we are? (I know- stupid enough to let the MSM pick our candidate for us)

Where do you go to let the RNC know that you’re not going to accept this BS?

If you are a registered Republican, you will be getting a mailing from them in a week or two asking for a donation so that they can ‘rebuild’. I’d suggest that you use the prepaid envelope that they so thoughtfully include, to let them know your feelings.

They obviously never read emails from us ‘peons’.

Get your friends tuned in to conservative bloggers. Dems surf more than Republicans now, I heard. Let’s ramp it up. Send Zo to your friends.

Jesus.

No wonder he lost.

What a bunch of cretins. You wonder if they had the same great regard for McCain they do for Palin.

But Carl, you really need to stop with the “unnamed sources” crap.

People who do that really should have a stick stuck up you know where.

drjohn on November 6, 2008 at 9:54 PM

McCain looks worse and worse. As does Romney. Think these campaign workers acted without some nudging from either of these two? Think again.

McCain I get. What I can’t quite figure out are the dots you guys are putting to Romney. Maybe it was HUCKABEE! Romney isn’t running again. Why would he?

Noelie on November 6, 2008 at 10:03 PM

Painful my ass. You are enjoying every second of this.

wise_man on November 6, 2008 at 6:00 PM

Absolutely. I’ve been one of the few persistent critics of McCain since he ‘won’ the primary. Funny if so many Republicans wanted him, you would think you McCain loyalists wouldn’t have been screaming so much that everyone had to get behind him. Why was his campaign pretty much stillborn until he brought a conservative on board? Funny, even though she had some painful gaffes, look at how much enthusiasm a genuine conservative generated in just two and a half months compared to the almost 6 that McShamnesty had. The only derangement in this thread, as usual, is yours whizzman.
Think about this as a normal person would. It’s TWO DAYS after the election; this isn’t like the McClellan memoir that bashed Bush a couple years after he left…IT’S TWO DAYS and McCain staffers are bashing Palin..and McCain isn’t saying anything. How long did it take McCain to personally respond to the North Carolina ad on Reverend Wright? Yet all day and he’s said nothing. You want everyone to believe something is going on behind the scenes. What the f**k good does that do Palin who’s being trashed in the media by her f***ing running mates flunkies TWO DAYS after the election! If McCain was truly the honorable man you buttkissers make him out to be, he would have publicly repudiated his staffers and started firing people. Instead he’s said nothing.
Think about this too: Palin’s staffers could probably find out who’s dishing this dirt..and take some kind of revenge on them..unless they’re being protected by McCain. Face it Whizzman, this kind of attitude starts at the top, and trickles down..and then staffers feel they have the right to go out and talk this kind of garbage. I’m willing to bet McCain has been stewing about how wildly popular Palin is with the base and is more than happy to let his scumbag staffers trash her. Typical McCain. Won’t take the gloves off against Obama, but has his staff kneecap his own VP. Shall I sing a few bars of ‘Backdoor John’ for you whizzman? Not sure what’s more pathetic, McCain, or you for defending him.

austinnelly on November 6, 2008 at 10:04 PM

These people should not be allowed in any future campaign. They are traitors and should be a pariah as far as conservatives are concerned. Just unbelievably mean and stupid.

Kudos to austinnelly. Well said piece.

mariloubaker on November 6, 2008 at 10:32 PM

Schmidt, Wallace–two skanks. Any candidate who hires them in 2010 goes to my ‘boycott and oppose’ list.

Seems likely, though, that though Wallace piglet will end up back at CBS, which any sane person is already avoiding like the plague.

Schmidt ought to find a new line of work, the p*ssy.

She served her purpose, and would have made a good VP probably, but my use for her has ended.

muyoso on November 6, 2008 at 6:16 PM

You’ve made it clear that you think the Republican party should commit suicide by snubbing the social conservatives, even though this election showed how effective they were in GOTV. There is no evidence that Palin drove supporters from the ticket, in fact quite the opposite, given the crowds she drew and the amount of money she raised. She has been thoroughly vetted now.

The next election is four years away, and that’s plenty of time for Sarah Palin to get “experience.” She can use that time to her advantage, and someone else may come along, too.

Attacking her like these McCain supporters are is sheer idiocy, though. No one doing this anonymously through the media or on blogs and comment sections has the Republican party’s best interests at heart, and that’s why these people should be named and / or told to shut their pieholes.

chunderroad on November 6, 2008 at 11:09 PM

Palin doesnt need the help, the more she bears herself, the better.

Shes no chump, might have been a little unaquainted with foreign affairs but she had her own responsibilities that werent fullfilled voting present.

As far as understanding them its easy,

conservatives opt for whats right and side with free like minded countries.

the left shoehorns itself while regularly supporting antithesis for civilization.

Happens all the time, but they support the troops.

Sarah Palin I am certain would put the country first as our founding fathers saw it.

profitsbeard on November 6, 2008 at 8:29 PM

Are you people serious?? first of all this didn’t come from the Obama team to “distract the country”. This is coming from somebody or maybe even a couple of people inside the McCain campaign and it was 1st reported on FOX NEWS,the so-called epicenter of right-wing news that all of you claim is “fair and balanced”. Now that they report on a story that’s blasting the same presidental ticket that they were clearly in the tank for the entire campaign, you people turn on them for taking a shot at poor ol’ Sara.

Have you people stopped and thought for 1 sec that maybe what Carl Cameron told Bill O was true and this really went on?

From what I’ve seen here, the answer to that is NO!

You people are acting like Sara Palin is the Virgin Mary, and nobody can say or have a negative opinion about here. Well I got news for you sweetheart, welcome to the real world of Washington Politics.

Fox News goes totally out of their way to claim that they are the only network that is “fair and balanced” so all they were doing is reporting it like they say they are.

If this came from MSNBC,CNN,NBC,ABC,CBS,then you would have a bone to pick with them. But this came from Fox,YOUR network that has been nothing more that a agent of propaganda for George Bush and the Republican Party since Day 1

I’m not defending Fox News,I think they are nothing more than tools of hate, fear and smear, but I will give them credit for the 1st time ever, they tried to be a real news network and just report the news without any spin or bias

Let it go,the campaign and the election is over, and dear ol’ Sara will be just fine as long as she goes away never to be heard from again
