Mop-up thread

A few linky treats for our night owls and those too wired from having witnessed a bloodbath to wind down just yet. With 99 percent reporting, Obama’s clinging to leads of a few thousand votes in both Indiana and North Carolina. If he wins both, he’ll top out at 364 EVs (with the possibility for more depending upon what happens in Missouri and Montana). That would mean he’d have overperformed even the rosy projections at Five Thirty Eight. He already has 338 in the bank, which means your resident Eeyore actually wasn’t pessimistic enough. Good lord.

We’re headed for another wipeout in the House in the too, with Politico projecting a Dem pickup of at least 20 seats. You can follow the late returns at CNN’s master page. Murtha ended up destroying Russell in spite of everything, thereby depriving us of even a tiny consolation prize. For that, all hope now rests on Minnesota, where Norm Coleman’s clinging to a two-point lead over Stuart Smalley with 72 percent reporting.

Still too soon to tell which way Prop 8 is headed in California but with a quarter of the vote counted, it’s 53/47 in favor of reinstating the ban on gay marriage (i.e. a “yes” vote).

Here’s the video and transcript of The One’s speech. I mean, President The One.

Update: Wow — if, if the exit polls are right, Prop 8 is headed for a narrow defeat.

Questions for President Elect Obama:

Your detractors claim your campaign accepted over $200 Million in illegal contributions, now that the election has concluded will you release your campaign records to refute those claims?

There have been numerous reports of voter registration fraud and voter fraud in several states, some linked to workers in your own campaign, what assurance do you offer the American people that those guilty of election crimes will be prosecuted and not pardoned?

Which book will you place your hand upon while taking the oath of office?

Will you be inviting William Ayers or Father Wright to your inauguration?

When will you order our troops to retreat from Iraq?

Now that the election has concluded, will you continue to play the race card against your detractors?

Which terrorist sponsoring nation will you meet without preconditions first?

Did you vote ‘present’ on any portion of your ballot?

Which will be the highest priority for your administration: gun control, tax reform, or blaming Republicans for obstructionism?

What action will your administration take to fight the threat of Motivated Social Cognition?

Are you running for re-election?

Browncoatone on November 5, 2008 at 6:47 AM

To all of you who prayed for a McCain victory, how’d that work out? I guess y’all didn’t pray hard enough. I didn’t say any prayers because I do not believe that there is anything to pray to.

And if they succeed in a 3/4 majority in 2010, there may very well be a Constitutional convention that will destroy that sacred document.

Not going to happen.

hillbillyjim on November 5, 2008 at 6:39 AM

Yes it is going to happen..Obama is planning on redistricting democratic areas and creating new districts in democratic areas after the 2010 CENSUS comes out..

Oh yes, he will have a supermajority in both the House and the Senate and will be unstoppable.

Forget about 2010 and 2012…we have to think of something NOW.

Either try to get him disqualified because of his dual citzenship or non citzenship, or start planning for a secession of states now!

SaintOlaf on November 5, 2008 at 6:49 AM

History was made last night. It was exhilirating to take part in it. At the beginning of the night I was sure we were going to win it. I was very very optimistic.
America’s folly was last night and the beginning of her end is today. With democrats having as great of a majority as they have in both houses and Obama being an individual who hates his country as evidenced by his past our country will be destroyed from within.
Sad sad day but it looks like the real end of days are coming.

theguardianii on November 5, 2008 at 6:50 AM

I personally plan to take a deep breath. I expect the Dems to take this as a mandate and am not hopeful that Obama will be able to stand up to his own party and say no. There is absolutely no evidence of that ever happening in the past.

The thing that I fear the most is that inside the beltway republicans will blame the loss on Sarah Palin and the financial crisis and not where it belongs. Failure to embrace conservatism and not sticking to it’s principles. I live in GA and honestly If I had known the outcome I would not have voted for Saxby Chambliss he is part of the problem. Reaching across the aisle is fine but not if it compromises the core principles of conservatism.

ldbgcoleman on November 5, 2008 at 6:50 AM

There is the slight possibility that the Democrats will fall into fighting each other like they did during Clinton’s first term and accomplish nothing. But I’m not holding my breath.

Buy a gun folks. Next year they’ll be illegal.

For all those bashing the Palin pick. We will never know whether Romney would have helped or not. I personnally think two rich white guys would not have done much although Romney was my first choice.

McCain had to overcome a biased media, a historic amount of money raised by Obama, A very unpopular president and a financial crisis. He was also too determined to be honorable and would not really play politics. His team mishandled Palin. He had no message until the last few weeks which was two little too late.

Circumstances and a disorganized campaign cost McCain the loss in my view. Sarah may or may not have a future. An awful lot can happen in 4 years. A man most people had never heard of 4 years ago just got elected.

Palin must go back and govern Alaska and choose her path carefully. She must stick to her principles and not get caught up in playing politics with the republican party. She woul dthen lose what she has and become one of them much as McCain lost his Maverick status.

PS Seeing Lindsey Graham in every shot at every campaign stop was enough to worry me

stenwin77 on November 5, 2008 at 7:07 AM

He had the right idea to take the outsized influence of outsized dollars out of the political process. Chalk this up to the law of unintended consequences.

And with all the money Obama had pouring in (some of it illegal, mind you), it’s surprising it wasn’t a bigger blowout.

redfoxbluestate on November 5, 2008 at 7:10 AM

Mac did NOT pin the Fannie & Freddie squarely on the shoulders of the Democrats. He was too busy “crossing the aisle”. It was a golden opportunity.. he missed it. He let them shape the story.

He never should have voted for it. The campaign went south when he “scurried back to DC” and did nothing.

A somewhat bittersweet day for progressives, Obama wins in a landslide but both Prop 8 in Cali and Amendment 2 in Florida pass.

Typhonsentra on November 5, 2008 at 7:14 AM

So what we have learned here is that there are no laws in American elections any more. You can take money from anyone, from anywhere, if you can take it without them knowing even better. You can lie through your teeth if the press is on your side, and voter fraud works. We have no idea how many fraudulent votes were cast. Naive that we are we think most people are honest, were there 1,000 fraudulent votes, 10,000, 100,000, a million. We don’t know. Pennsylvania is astonishing, that just can’t be real. People can’t be that dumb can they? Murtha by that much? Obama by that much? How much of that was their desire to crush dissent so they really called out ACORN to bring in the votes. Will we ever know?
You can say drop the not born in Hawaii thing, but we have already seem state officials in Ohio go in the tank for Obama and break privacy laws and fight to not clean up the voter registration.
What happens if two months, a year from now we find there was indeed massive voter fraud and that is the only reason Murtha or Obama won, who is going to do anything?

It’s going to take a long time to undo this.

Republicans have allowed the media to define who they are, and the masses beleive whatever comes across their television.

I’m not very confident that the GOP will learn their lesson though. I expect even more pandering, more “reaching across the aisle to have their balls cut off”, and more RINOs when just the opposite should happen.

As of now, with 99% of precincts reporting, Prop 8 is ahead 52-48%. I’d say Prop 8 passed.

Also, while there will certainly be a recount, it looks like Norm Coleman might have won, too — by like 1,000 votes. Thus, Obama will NOT have a filibuster-proof Senate majority.

Still, look out. We are totally screwed. He is coming into power with a huge mandate and he and his liberal allies will go immediately to work raising taxes and nationalizing industries, etc.

John Mccain is now history and the new Bob Dole.

We need a plan.

The good thing about this election it gave a great indication who in the media we can trust and it turns out not to many, even so called conservatives.

This election was a rejection of the Bush years for the most part, the financial crisis was the cherry on top.

All of this just points to the stark reality that many, many Americans are too dumbed down to think their way out of a wet paper bag.

I feel like this election was manipulated. In hind sight, the Indy Mac think looks like it was the test case, followed really high oil prices, that generated what really isn’t the worst economic “crisis” since the great depression. How long before oil prices shoot back up to and above what we just went through a few months ago?

Talk about the economy being important, cheap energy is the defining issue for the health of the economy. How short sighted the foolish american electorate is.

This is why the communist manifesto places so much importance on educating the young, and why Bill Ayres felt compelled to become a professor of education.

reaganaut on November 5, 2008 at 7:23 AM
I agree. The lessons of the past 8 years must include:
(1) Neoconservatism is dead. Republicans now need to return to their roots of opposing “nation building.” Historians will associate this doctrine with the ultimate failure of the Republican Party, because it was the war in Iraq that was mostly responsible for Bush’s approval ratings going to 25%.
(2) Religious/social conservatives MUST develop an appreciation for defense and economic conservatism, and must recognize that social issues ought not define the candidate. Bush and Huckabee (who, incidentally, I think ultimately is responsible for “spoiling” Romney’s chances and got McCain the nomination) lacked that appreciation. It’s not to say that conservative social issues aren’t important (e.g., Prop 8 passed in California, which Obama won by 25+%), but they aren’t the end-all, be-all. You can’t be a one trick pony.
(3) Republicans must develop a media strategy. Granted, Palin failed to meet expectations. But a lot of the reason why she ended up hurting McCain’s ticket was because the McCain campaign botched her roll-out, which replaced what should have been 5-6 news days’ worth of positive or neutral stories about her background and achievements as governor with an unending barrage of lies and smears. And looking back over the past 8 years, one thing’s for sure — except for the Swifties in 2004, Republicans have generally been unsuccessful at getting a message out there. While it’s easy to say “what can you do about the liberal MSM?,” whining will not get Republicans elected.
(4) You need ideas and a message to win a campaign. Kerry lost in 2004, in part, because his entire message was “Bush is scary!!! Oooooga boooooga!” McCain’s entire message this campaign was “Obama is scary!! Oooooga boooga!!” And, he did a piss-poor job of using Obama’s radical associates against him. What was McCain’s vision? What did he want to do?

Outlander on November 5, 2008 at 7:44 AM

Or it is God’s time to take down the US. For those of us who believe in the rapture, that time may not be far off. However, I think there is a really good clue in scripture. If we’re still around when Isaiah:17 occurs, you know things are about to hit the fan.

Isaiah 17:1-4
An oracle concerning Damascus:”See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins.

The cities of Aroer will be deserted and left to flocks, which will lie down, with no one to make them afraid.

The fortified city will disappear from Ephraim, and royal power from Damascus; the remnant of Aram will be like the glory of the Israelites,” declares the LORD Almighty.

“In that day the glory of Jacob will fade; the fat of his body will waste away.

Every click today will result in nauseating reading.

It’s not the thought of President Obama that nauseates me. It is these two things:

a) the following list of people with greater power today, dancing and celebrating their domain over America: Charles Schumer. Maxine Waters. Nanacy Pelosi. Harry Reid. Charles Rangel. John Conyers. Dick Durbin.

Let’s not kid ourselves. This is a really, really, really bad siutation. And we haven’t survived the Carter Years yet. The Lehman/AIG/et al Reichstag was the direct result of Carter Era legislation, eh?

b) Press manipulation of information during this race is very troubling.

But, you know what? God still brought the sunshine this morning and we still live in the greatest country on Earth.

God is still in control, yes, but America, the greatest country on earth? That’s not promised anywhere, and it will certainly not be true after the Democrats do what they’re going to do. The American experiment in self-government is now officially over.

It can be restored if we manage to take control of the education system and actually start educating children again — assuming Tyrant Obama does not somehow make home schooling illegal (expect him to try, and soon.) As it stands, though, we now have two generations fully acclimated to World Socialism as the final and proper way of things.

Whatever we have and will learn from this, I hope one take-away is that beyond conservative ideology, we need a leader on our side who is media savvy, a “star” if you will, like Reagan. Sarah Palin was the only reason I could see for voting FOR a candidate. These people that wanted McCain, until a real conservative came along like Palin, all started jumping ship.

You have to clean out that Party, now is a time for rebirth of the new Conservative era. Reagan NEVER compromised his conservative principles, and he won landslides. Apparently most Repubes are more worried about their standing with the mainstream media than actually winning elections.

Liberal Republicans had it their way, and see how it worked out. Being centrist conservative seems like a great recipe for victory doesn’t it? Nothing like compromising one’s principles and buying into what the media portray you as. Nice work.

Bush’s place as the worst president in modern American history is now firmly cemented. He was a weak candidate in 2000 and only won the election by a squeaker (537 votes in FL) because Algore was an even MORE pathetic candidate. Our Congressional leaders share a lot of the blame, too. They were plagued with scandal after scandal and failed to exercise appropriate oversight over Bush’s activities. To his everlasting credit, however, McCain finally did demand accountability on the war in 2005 when he called for Rummy’s resignation and later when he demanded the surge strategy, but that was too little, too late.

What is scary, however, is that I think Bush and Rove WERE right on immigration issues. The Hispanic vote has cut even more firmly against Republicans this year, and no doubt lost us Florida and North Carolina. And that vote share will only increase. Once they become a permanent Democratic voting bloc, the Republican party will cease to be a major national party.

I don’t think that is the way it will play out. Much of why the invasion into Georgia occurred had to do with the developing friendly ties between Georgia and Israel and destroying the infrastructure in place that could have supported the Israeli fighter jets on their airstrike into Iran. (Remember Russia is helping them with their nuclear program, for a price of course.)

With a US president who is of DUBIOUS intent towards Israel coming in January, I think the strike will happen before Bush leaves office.

Either way though, the time is short.

Sure hope you’re right.

Bush’s place as the worst president in modern American history is now firmly cemented.

Outlander on November 5, 2008 at 7:55 AM

I think Bush has plenty of blame assignable to him for where we are now. Mainly the failure even to stand up for himself and his administration so often.

But, worst president in modern American history?

Plenty of high school textbooks are all ready to print that right up.

Can we at least wait half of the prescribed twenty years to truly judge his presidency? Lord knows, our political enemies are already set to judge it for us right now. No need to pile on.

Let him have it, I suppose, if it really helps.

Lehosh on November 5, 2008 at 8:03 AM

I can’t imagine why Sarah Palin would even be interested in Ted Steven’s seat. The DC insiders were quite hostile to her this whole time. If I was going to offer her friendly advice, I’d tell her to keep kicking butt in that AL Gov’s mansion for as long as she wants to keep the job. I’d much rather live in AL than in Washington, DC anyway.

___The likelyhood that the republican party will learn the correct message from this travesty is very small indeed. I’ve already heard people talking about how they need to do more to move to the center, and that the traditional base is no longer enough. They need to work on gaining the minority, and regaining the moderately progressive, white, college educateds.

___I think this is the end of any hope for limited, constitutional government. Freedom has been becoming a smaller and smaller issue for years. I will mourn the long wasting disease afflicting the tenth amendment, that may be in its final days.

Lehosh on November 5, 2008 at 8:03 AM

41 votes means 0 ability to block filibusters. That is why they wanted the 60 supermajority in the senate. The senate is what has blocked many of the house bills. That is the frustration and the beauty in what George Washington wanted by insisting on the senate. (Thomas Jefferson thought it was unnecessary. George was right, and thankfully Jefferson was in France when the document was written.)

I’m so sick of the euphemisms. Liberals are liberals. They are socialist leaning, anti-capitalist, Godless (usually), lying, panderers.

For instance, here in Kalifornia, anti-Prop 8 ads mentioned only “protecting marriage rights,” never mentioning that it was homosexual marriage that they were trying to “protect.”

(A “right” that was forced on us by liberal judges.)

The instant gratification society has convinced itself that it needs change.

Here are the unemployment rates for G7 countries in 2006/2007. I do not have 2008 figures available. Unemployment rates in the United States are of course up but there is no reason to believe they are not up everywhere.

Japan 3.9%; the United States 4.6%; United Kingdom 5.3%. Canada 6%; Italy 6.8%; France 8.3%; Germany 8.4%.

Perhaps instead of trying to steal Obama’s change message John McCain’s ought to have had an adult conversation with the American public.

The vetting of Obama will begin sometime in the next 18 months.

Take some time to mourn, for the America we knew is dead.

Then let’s start community organizing. We have to hold for two years, and start winning back in 2010.

Home school your younger children. Send your older ones to a college or university that does not spew hate for the USA, if you can find one. Boycott the major news outlets and their advertisers. Be prepared to march on Washington if when they propose the Freedom of Choice Act and the Fairness Doctrine. “Get in the faces” of your legislators. Let your senators know there will be hell to pay if they put legislators-from-the-bench on the Supreme Court. Run for school board. Call in to every talk show you can get on, not to whine, but to expose the sheeple to solid conservative ideas. Write your memoirs so that your children and grandchildren can know that once America was that shining city on a hill.

Pray, Pray, Pray.

God Bless America!

No, Israel is like us, with the left being in power but not necessarily in the majority. Even as left as many in Israel are, about 60% were polled and felt safer with McCain as president.

Olmert is on his way out, and the replacement Tzipi Lipvini has not been able to form a govenment, so Israel will be having elections soon too.

Benjamin Netanyahu is a strong candiate to take the reigns again. Hamas has already rumbled that if he takes power the “peace process” is dead.

Gee, sounds like a ringing endorsement for Israel to choose him, especially in the face of the US presidency. Its a shame that the American electorate doesn’t seem to care that folks like Gadafi have endorsed Obama.

PALIN 2012!!

GrayLoess on November 5, 2008 at 8:17 AM

A lot is going to be said,, it has been the lack of conservative leadership that has brought us to this point.
The “new tone” from Bush,,, ignoring or hiding Democrat lawbreaking “for the good of the country,” like RINO’s not voting to remove Clinton after the impeachment,, ignoring how they vandalized the White House,, the Republicans embracing big government themselves,, well, Mr McCain.
He lead us here with immigration,, McCain/Feingold, the gang of 14 or whatever it was,,, this is what you get when you embrace the lies of the enemy. You get to live in the enemies camp.
I will say one last thing,,, we have also arrived here due to a lack of morals. The American gospel has replaced the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The American Gospel that says as long as you feel good and think positive and send in money God is gonna bless you. The American gospel that is preached today in too many American churches would never have sustained or produced the kind of people that built this nation or stormed the beaches of Normandy!
Proverbs 6:
16 There are six things that the Lord hates,
seven that are an abomination to him:
17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood,
18 a heart that devises wicked plans,
feet that make haste to run to evil,
19 a false witness who breathes out lies,
and one who sows discord among brothers.

This nation just voted for all of the above.

The way your ilk speak we have been evil and vile since the first pilgrim set foot on the eastern coast. Maybe God is going to let us suffer for a while and see the errors of what happens when men put their trust in the state to provide for them.

1. Funding of Presidential campaigns with public funds is dead.

2. Unless Governor Palin can take over the next Senate seat available in Alaska she will be relegated to GOP fund raisers and Dan Quayle status. (Has any person as VP candidate on any Presidential ticket that failed ever gone on further in politics?)

3. Blame Bush and Cheney. Would it have been better if Cheney resigned mid-term? When was the last time the VP of a two-term President was not the party’s choice to run for the next President?
And Bush…To appease the Democrats he went on a spend, spend, spend mania and on top of it built a bigger, more intrusive government – all contrary to conservative views.

4. The good news is that commentators on MSNBC and other liberal news shows are probably all out of jobs – they lived by whacking Bush. People like to see somebody kicked around. They cannot do that to the Messiah.

The next four years will be Rush Limbaugh’s golden years – he will have so much material to work with.

5. Liberal political blogs will lose most of their readership – how many times can one say the One is the greatest, the Democrats are the greatest?

6. Large Newspaper readership will plummet further. See #5.

7. There will be no honeymoon for Obama once he takes office.
The only way the newspapers and magazines can keep up readership is digging up dirt on Obama and the Democrats. Will they criticize Obama and the Democrats to survive?
If not, see #6.

8. Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers and others will suddenly re-appear on the national scene – wait a month or so. All will be an embarrassment to Obama.
(Tony Rezko’s lawyer is trying to contact Obama as you read this; “Rezko walks or Rezko talks”.)

- The Kenyan Obama clan is going to be a source of endless “Bill Carter”-type stories to embarrass Obama. It will be amazing how many cousins Obama has…(and how many are living illegally in the U.S.)

- She was hidden away since the Democratic Convention, but how soon until Michelle lashes out at America to reveal the true bitter, angry person she is?

8. Joe Biden will prove to be one of the most annoying, obnoxious VPs there ever was. Obama will send Biden on as many State funerals as possible to keep him out of Washington.
At this moment people are clammering to sign book deals for the annual “Joe Biden Gaffes and Bloopers” books to be published.
“Joe” will become the new term for when somebody makes a gaffe, puts their foot in their mouth. As in, “What fool, he just die a Joe”.
