Mop-up thread

posted at 1:06 am on November 5, 2008 by Allahpundit

A few linky treats for our night owls and those too wired from having witnessed a bloodbath to wind down just yet. With 99 percent reporting, Obama’s clinging to leads of a few thousand votes in both Indiana and North Carolina. If he wins both, he’ll top out at 364 EVs (with the possibility for more depending upon what happens in Missouri and Montana). That would mean he’d have overperformed even the rosy projections at Five Thirty Eight. He already has 338 in the bank, which means your resident Eeyore actually wasn’t pessimistic enough. Good lord.

We’re headed for another wipeout in the House in the too, with Politico projecting a Dem pickup of at least 20 seats. You can follow the late returns at CNN’s master page. Murtha ended up destroying Russell in spite of everything, thereby depriving us of even a tiny consolation prize. For that, all hope now rests on Minnesota, where Norm Coleman’s clinging to a two-point lead over Stuart Smalley with 72 percent reporting.

Still too soon to tell which way Prop 8 is headed in California but with a quarter of the vote counted, it’s 53/47 in favor of reinstating the ban on gay marriage (i.e. a “yes” vote).

Here’s the video and transcript of The One’s speech. I mean, President The One.

Update: Wow — if, if the exit polls are right, Prop 8 is headed for a narrow defeat.

Blowback

Because we let the media define who we are. Why do we even care what the media thinks?

hawkdriver on November 5, 2008 at 2:39 AM

I wish I knew…honestly, I really do. I got stuck a couple of weeks ago having to watch morning “news” shows, and flipped back and forth between them all just in shock. I don’t watch TV, so I hadn’t really been immersed in the full treatment of Obama worship, but I can’t think of a better description of all of the shows. Chirpy, empty headed anchor people kissing Obama’s ass. For 2 hours, no matter which channel I selected. Not a single contrary word about Biden’s many f-ups. Not a single contrary word about The One.

I found it surreal and kinda amusing at the time. Not any more.

LegendHasit, I went to McCain’s rally here in NV yesterday. He savaged many democrats by name….
funky chicken on November 5, 2008 at 2:24 AM

Big deal. He never did it when he had a NATIONAL audiences.
He never did it when the people who really needed to hear it could hear it. He only did it when he was in front of his big fans.

From the very first he has done PRECISELY as I predicted he would do, with ONLY one exception: Choosing Sarah Palin.

And of course when he fails, for doing the things that I predicted he would do, you blame me for being right.

If the meteorologist tells you that a hard freeze is coming in a week, you would no doubt blame him when you loose your orange crop.

By the way, don’t worry about your husband. Not only did I survive being in uniform (and a DoD ‘civilian’ contractor) while Carter was President, I actually had a pretty good time.

Damned straight. I’m not ashamed of my country, but I sure as hell am ashamed of some of the commenters here who’d throw the the USA under the bus based on one freakin election.

Hollowpoint on November 5, 2008 at 2:39 AM

It’s not “throwing the USA under the bus”. It’s a fear that the USA has just taken a very dangerous, and irreversible, step along a path to oblivion.

Normally, this would be a fringe idea, even with a Marxist getting the White House and lunatic liberals in charge of Congress, but after what we all just saw with the “credit crisis”, things can change radically and quickly. Liberal policies will certainly drive this country to economic/monetary catastrophe. From there …

progressoverpeace on November 5, 2008 at 2:47 AM

McCain kept thinking the voters wanted a Maverick when what they really wanted was a Messiah.

And dont underestimate the power of Obama’s constant message that electing Mac was tantamount to another 4 years of Bush. he appealed to a vast segment of America that was either totally fatigued with Bush or just hated the guy outright.

SAZMD on November 5, 2008 at 2:48 AM

All of McCain’s endless New Hampshire pandering for 8 years was less than worthless.

NH went for Kerry in 2004. I don’t think we can blame NH for this loss. It was always a long shot. But a candidate does what he or she can, right?

Maybe it’s not so much that McCain lost as Obama won. There’s really not a single Republican I can think of who could have had a better shot, certainly not any that ran in the primary. The party’s been living off its past for awhile now. We need new blood, new faces, new ideas. And that has to start at the local level, in council and mayoral races, in state legislatures, etc. There’s just not enough in the pipeline right now. It’s a complete rebuilding process.

And I know this is probably a heresy but maybe we need new, or at least additional voices to the current opinion makers and shapers, the Rushes and the Lauras, the Sean Hannitys, etc. Maybe we’ve become too dependent on them to drive the party’s agenda.

Totally agree Gov. Palin energized the conservative base and kept this race from being a total blow out. She will be in the hunt for ‘12…deservedly.

Buckeye Babe on November 5, 2008 at 2:34 AM

Yeah sure, 350 EVs for Obama is not a blowout, and we get to try it again for 2012? No thanks.

All the gains Palin made for McCain were offset from losses from independents. A Palin run in 2012 or 2016 will be another 350+ EV rout. She’s a 40% candidate.

After 9/11 he had a huge opportunity to put us on war footing. Instead he gave us NCLB and the Medicare prescription drug program, and porkfest after porkfest passed by his GOP congress.

He could have used the bully pulpit to inform voters about the dangers of buying so much oil from nations that hate us…and not a peep.

some of you Allah type lovers have a strange notion about politics principals and ideology. Because Obama won I now supposed to hop to it and not just concede but get on board with his policies? Are you freaking kidding me? There are elections every two years, and just as the Democrats won, we can come back like we did with Newt under Clinton’s presidency. But what am I thinking? I’m talking to the traditional defeatist, do nothing Republicans who love to shit on the pity pot for years and years bemoaning they still have their dignity. There’s no dignity in apathy. But no worries. There’s always a Reagan or Newt type to fire up the grassroots base and the do nothing Republicans get on board because they never like being left behind and love taking all the credit for doing nothing…

Well… Almost nothing. They never seem to miss a black cloud that they can point out. There’s nothing noteworthy about being the Paul Reverie of doom and gloom. There is in encourage others to pick themselves up by the bootstraps andctrudging one more step forward despite all the obstacles. It’s called perserverence. You should try it sometime.

We should never have taken Wright off limits. We should never let the press get away with their nonsense. We should begin each press conference and speech with an attack on the bias media and name names. Mathews, olberfart, couric. But do it in a mocking patronizing way.

And for the love of gunter…Can we please stop saying “what would Reagan do?”

hawkdriver on November 5, 2008 at 2:43 AM

Campaign fraud needs to be addressed, but if that’s what the Republican party and conservatives are going to focus on, then the battle is already lost.

Half the country voted for an inexperienced liberal with a radical past. That’s not a failing of the American people or the Democrats, it’s a failing of the Republican party. In 2004, the Dems learned that you can’t win by running against the not-Bush. Unfortunately, McCain ran as the not-Obama, and predictably lost.

If the Republican party continues to be the party that represents itself as not-Democrats and little else, then they deserve to lose.

LegendHasIt on November 5, 2008 at 3:06 AM

Obviously there is a new political reality in America. Conservatives will have to forge to alliances in order to make any kind of comeback against a very large tide.

I have seen this happen elsewhere and to a certain extent conservatives will need to pair down their core objectives. Do you care more about abortion than fiscal issues? Do you care about foreign policy and the role of the US in the world or are you after some sort of fundamental Christian society.

You can’t have it all now. I sincerely doubt that making Palin your leader will do anything but further marginalize the conservative brand. Decide on immigration. That is key and I suspect part of the reason why the election went as badly as it did.

Time to regroup.. rethink… and come up with new ideas. But the policies and politics that propelled Bush into power are fully repudiated here.

My hope is that responsible, competent, and fiscally sound government should be the core values of any viable future conservative movement. The reactionary phase is over. And good riddance.

What are you talking about. Creepy? I’m not allowed to dislike the half that said “Fuc* the Troops”.

There has to be a recount that close. You have GOT to be kidding me.
I can’t find jack on MN law!

The only Republican who got something good from this whole election season was Mike Huckabee. Now hes a TV star.

And smith just took the lead in oregon but only 45% of thevote is inthere

goldeagle11 on November 5, 2008 at 3:00 AM

Smith is screwed in Oregon because Lane County has just started reporting. Another Senate seat for the Dems.

Hopefully Stevens and Coleman can pull it off.

The Minnesota Senate race looks like one that will probably be recounted automatically. (Not sure about MN election laws.)

From the Sec. of State’s site with 95% of precincts reporting and 77% of counties complete:

Republican NORM COLEMAN 1137916 42.17
Democratic-Farmer-Labor AL FRANKEN 1126145 41.73

hillbillyjim on November 5, 2008 at 3:11 AM

After 9/11 he had a huge opportunity to put us on war footing.

I don’t blame Bush really at all. I think of him as a man of great will and courage. I do think that he spent too much tho.
I place blame on repubs in congress tho for falling asleep at the wheel. I place alot of blame on the citizenship of this country.
I think we have been in a long steady drive to lower our standards. With this election being the pinnacle of it. All with the hopes that we’ll get that massive handout.

Let me look at three things and use that as an example of why that’s not smart.

Three things that democrats/leftists are and have been in charge of:

1) Public Education
2) The banking and credit fiasco.
3) The media and entertainment.

All pretty much have one thing in common. A lowering of STANDARDS.
And just looky at how well they’ve turned out.

(SIDENOTE: my ma-in-law is a former teacher, who flipped when i said this to her. She hasnt spoken to me in a week.
See? theres benifits to speakin truth to POWER!!! >:)

Handel on November 5, 2008 at 3:12 AM

I think you are pissing in the wind Hawkdriver. If it were close, you could claim fraud but this was as close to a landslide as you or I will see and to call it a fraud will alienate the legitimate vote.

lexhamfox on November 5, 2008 at 3:13 AM

I can’t believe people are wasting time arguing that Reverend Wright was not hit hard enough.

We just git hit by a tsunami and you are bitching that the napkin in your lap wasn’t big enough.

If we don’t figure out how to reach young voters and independents, we are not winning any more elections. These are people who are not attuned to the culture wars, don’t remember the 1960s, and hate negative ads and attack politics.

Al Franken! I can’t believe. Honestly guys how long do you think Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid can stay in power with people like loudmouth Franken under them? Can you imagine how many stupid things Franken will do?

terryannonline on November 5, 2008 at 3:13 AM

And good riddance.

lexhamfox on November 5, 2008 at 3:07 AM

No no no no! It’s because we’ve acquiesced to those who want to water down our values that we are in this situation. We must have core values that are non-negotiable, and teach them to our children. This is NOT an election cycle problem, it’s generational and we need to start fixing it now.

pugwriter on November 5, 2008 at 3:14 AM

Handel on November 5, 2008 at 3:16 AM

hawkdriver, they won’t get it. The majority of US voters just chose to throw the troops under the bus while they are taking hostile fire. The majority of US voters rejected a true military hero who could have lead our men and women to a resounding victory, and instead took the opportunity to hire Obama as your boss, and my husband’s boss. And part of why that happened is that GOP voters didn’t come out strong for our candidate.

They can only bash McCain, and be kinda happy he lost.

The few remaining Republicans in Congress are going to be to afraid to look crosseyed at the 0pp0sition, and the Democrats think that it was a wonderful plan.

1. Why if we are so soundly defeated do they need the Fairness Doctrine? ( They were just saying this last summer Rush and Hannity were immaterial)

Hawk, the fairness doctrine is both a wacky idea of the left and a canard of the right used to instill fear. Right now the SCOTUS is hearing arguments about the ability of the government (FCC) to regulate speech on the airwaves. This has ties to the fairness doctrine, and how the Supremes rule could have big effects on any attempt to implement it. Pay attention to that outcome.

2. Why does Obama even talk about a Civilian Security Force, “As Strong As THe Military? (What is the purpose?) You have to wonder.

I wonder just what he means. I’ve read so many wild suppositions, from “its the New Obama Brownshirts, loyal only to him” to it’s how Chavez and Obama are coordinating a takeover of the country. On the other hand, it could be a new plan for compulsory national service, like the Swedes.

Now that he’s been duly elected, we’ll have to see what it means, and if he can actually implement it.

Whatever the truth, I do still have deep and abiding faith that this electorate, with the powerful help of the entrenched bureaucracy, will moderate any really wild notions he may have.

trailboss on November 5, 2008 at 3:18 AM

I’d rather lose three or four elections in a row while in the process of rebuilding conservatism than win the next one in a landslide by watering down our platform just so we could say that Republicans won.

That gains us nothing of substance.

Al Franken came to Kuwait and under the guise of doing comedy for troops, he spoke out publicly against the war in from of deployed troops and incited friction between National Guard troops and we Active Duty soldiers by insinuating we gave them inferior gear. I sat and watched his whole routine in Camp Udairi. He wore a trash can on his chest and said, “This is what the National Guard got.” He wasn’t happy to protest and suppress military morale from back in The States, he came into theater to do it. So now he’s a Senator. And it funny to you that we couldn’t even beat a clown like him. And I’ll give that to you coawardass. If having a man like him as a Senator after what he’s done there and said about us on Air America is okay with you, then my level of contempt for your half of the electorate is a great as his is for the military.
