Minnesota Congressional races: Better news than nationally

posted at 9:30 am on November 5, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

We did have a couple of bright spots in the wave of blue that washed through Minnesota and the nation in the presidential election.  Minnesota Republicans managed to hold their seats, including Michele Bachmann, who beat he challenger despite a heavy-handed attempt by the DCCC to oust her:

Rep. Michele Bachmann won reelection early Wednesday, fending off a challenge from Democrat Elwyn Tinklenberg in a Sixth Congressional District race that came to symbolize the perilous position of Republican incumbents across the nation.

Bachmann held on to a narrow but significant lead over Tinklenberg with 8 of 10 precincts reporting and a dwindling number of areas where he could find enough votes to make up the difference. Bachmann said Tinklenberg called her and conceded shortly after midnight.

Bachmann credited her victory to her vote against the $700 billion financial rescue package and her campaign to open up restricted areas for oil drilling to bring down the price of gasoline.

Bachmann wound up winning by the three-point margin I predicted over the weekend.  Without her gaffe on Hardball in the final two weeks of the campaign, it would have been much wider, but Bachmann managed to survive it by reminding Sixth CD voters of her principles and tireless efforts to keep government in check.  Tinklenberg didn’t stand a chance before the Chris Matthews interview, and in the end couldn’t convert that into a win.

John Kline won in MN-02, handily beating Steve Sarvi to win re-election.  Kline recently joined the no-pork coalition, and this election tested whether Kline’s district — where I live — was mature enough to recognize his efforts.  Kline has built a machine in this district without pork, which is remarkable and commendable for those working on his behalf.

Erik Paulsen managed to beat Aswin Madia to retain the seat of the retiring Jim Ramstad, which comes as a moderate surprise.  We thought Madia might have moved ahead of Paulsen, and when the returns for Obama came in, figured he’d ride the national coattails.  Instead, Madia lost by eight points in a district we thought might be turning purple.

We kept the Republican delegation intact, but that’s not true nationwide.  Republicans lost almost 20 seats as of now, which under the circumstances might not be as bad as one would think.  Eleven seats remain in question, but even if the GOP picks all of them up, we’ll be at 184 seats, with 251 for Democrats.  That will marginalize the Blue Dogs to some extent, but as a group they can still block Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama from the most radical legislation in their agenda.  If Democrats pick up those final eleven, that will make it more difficult for the Blue Dogs to have that effect.  Still, given the scope of Obama’s victory last night, this could have been much, much worse.

Right now, it looks like 1977, with a liberal ideologue for President and large majorities in both chambers of Congress.  The GOP hopes that it will be 1993, where overreach by the Clintons allowed Republicans to wrest control of Congress away from Democrats two years later.  In order for the latter scenario to succeed, the GOP will have to define themselves as a disciplined force for true conservative values, and not just an elephant feeding at the donkey trough, as they turned out to be from 2001-2006.

Stevens and Young of Alaska held their seats as well.

Bachman is the hope for the future of the GOP

ctmom on November 5, 2008 at 9:33 AM

Bachmann losing after going on MSNBC and telling the truth would have been a great injustice.

I am happy to see her and Paulsen win, (I was able to vote for Paulsen.)

Some sanity remains.

would it be legal for Palin to appoint herself to Stevens seat, and try to get needed Foreign Policy Cred?

jp on November 5, 2008 at 9:35 AM

Well put, as usual.

It should also not go without notice that we won back Tom DeLay’s and Mark Foley’s seats.

If she ever goes on Hardball again, make sure that she’s prepped by Haley Barbour.

I heard today that Alaska law requires a special election. Alaska changed its law fairly recently after a GOP governor (Murkowski) appointed his daughter.

Nice thought, though.

This is fantastic news, especially when you consider that the RNC was ready to throw her under the bus funding-wise. Hope breeds eternal. (Did I just use the word “hope”?)

Hey, does anyone here know how to get their hands on one of those billboard sized images of the red-white-n-blue Obama pictures? I need to slap one of those on the side of the house ASAP.

All objectionable media outlets. I’ve had it with my local paper, despite its endorsement of McCain. It’s editorial board didn’t have the stones to criticize Ohio officials for the way they treated Joe the Plumber–and it’s The Cincinnati Enquirer. Subscription not to be renewed; other information sources are available.

BuckeyeSam on November 5, 2008 at 9:41 AM

I am still in amazed the people of the United States are this stupid.

I guess they are getting what is coming to them. Not my problem. I was sure Fraken was going to win MN and I finally said screw it and turned off my computer, took a melatonin to go to sleep and went to bed.

I am still in shock. I am at work right now so ticked off and wondering how much voter fraud was involved in all the States. Just makes my head hurt.

upinak on November 5, 2008 at 9:42 AM

I’m quite pleased by one Republican defeat last night–the loss by Musgrave in District 4 of Colorado. Musgrave lost this conservative district, because her chief claim to fame was being anti-gay marriage. Her defeat should give pause to those who think that the right path for the Republicans is to move to the right and get rid of RINOs.

thuja on November 5, 2008 at 9:42 AM

Some throw in our face that we PUMA have not been enough to make a difference. I almost bought that, unil I saw these numbers: 65 million Republicans voted in 2004. Only 55 million bothered to show up for a far better choice this year.

LOL, sure this can happen!

LMAO…with the current bunch of idiots running around over there? Rely on Bobby Jindal for everything? One freaking dude?

pilamaye on November 5, 2008 at 9:44 AM

How about the ‘good news’ that the GOP and conservatives will be working towards getting our party to the current millennium? I think we learned a very hard lesson in this campaign that the GOP is so far off base and that we need to rally the troops, find the new fresh blood in the party and learn from our mistakes. Something to look forward to?

lyfsatrip on November 5, 2008 at 9:46 AM

the Dems refuse to debate on Fox, when the handful that do go on do so, they call Fox bias on air when they get called on a lie. Many of them refuse to go on the network, paticularly the leaders of the party.

petefrt on November 5, 2008 at 9:50 AM

Obama is getting about the same number of Popular vote that Bush got in 2004, 62 Million so far. He’ll finish a little higher, but so far it looks like alot less voted this year than 2004 if I’m looking at the numbers right.

which may mean Conservative turnout was depressed, the MSM campaign worked to some degree along with pissed off conservatives ’staying home’ to let the Marxist take over

jp on November 5, 2008 at 9:51 AM

As blown away I am about Obama’s win, I am even more surprised that Murtha pulled a win out of his orifice.

Are people that dependent on him or just plain ambivalent?

jgapinoy on November 5, 2008 at 9:53 AM

I think the results in Minnesota are a good indicator that the Republican numbers in the House have probably hit bottom. I don’t see Obama doing what Bush did and actually increasing numbers or staving off substantial losses in the midterms. Even Reagan lost scads of seats in 1982.

Yeah, the GOP lost by abandoning the base and its core beliefs. But what do expect from a party that let the NY Times pick its candidate.

The GOP has got to get back to its conservative principles. Schadenfreud over how bad Obama and the Dems act between now and 2010 is not going to win us Congress in 2010. Small governement, low taxes, strong defense and a commitment to justice is the way to win.

Don’t boycott the media. Get on every station and get in their faces. We can’t rely on Rush, Sean, Laura, and Mark because they’re gonna be silenced in the first month of The One’s presidency.

We need to purge the RINOs who got us into this mess, and get leaders who will fight for our principles.
We need to target Dems for defeat in 2010 NOW!. Frank, Rangle, Dodd, Murtha, and Schumer should be our top targets.
We need to expose Dem lawbreaking, voter fraud, finance fraud etc. Because if we don’t its only going to get worse.

Exactly. America will suffer for at least 2 years, but when the taxtakers realize that they are not going to get their mortgage paid and gas in the tanks, anger will be leveled at Teh One. Assuredly, the pendulum will swing back to our side when the haze of changium ad nauseum clears and Americas come back to the reality of failed liberal policies.

Dr.Cwac.Cwac on November 5, 2008 at 10:01 AM

Sarah will be just fine. By avoiding the attacks by some of the staff, who by the way are only looking after their own asses, will in the end find they didn’t save them at all. (pun intended)

Sarah is the bright light in all of this. She brought out what is so needed and necessary to our base AND to make it GROW! New blood. Pawlenty, Jindahl, who else out there can we look to for that new blood in our party? It’s time to move forward. You have to give it to “The One’s” campaign…they used current technology, understood the changing demographics of the country, etc. And to steal the line from their campaign..YES WE CAN..CHANGE! But it’s up to US to do it. If we are so disgruntled with how this all went down then it really IS up to US to make that change happen. Make sense?

Not sure what you mean by “you stupid people”. I was pushing for McCain to select her for VP months before it happened.

And I always supported her selection. Her rollout was botched(the McCain camp’s fault). The Couric interview was a disaster(her fault). But her appeal to the base is undeniable.

This is a woman with a bright future in the party. The worst thing they can do is relegate her to obscurity in Alaska. Well, actually the worst thing they can do is blame her for McCain’s loss. But banishing her would be the 2nd worst thing.

Bachman would be an excellent VP for Jindal. I hope 2012 is Jindal vs Palin in a friendly race designed to pick the one who can best run vs Comrade Obama or Lady Hillary if Obama does as badly as I expect. I supported Romney in the primaries but after finding out he or at least his close staff was the source of much of the anti-Palin sniping I have become more disgusted with him than I was with McCain. And please – no mention of Jeb Bush. Nice guy but lets the silver lining of thos year be that we are rid of the RINO Bushes and the RINO McCain.

Thanks for the list because I don’t know them all.

In Sanford’s case, however, he needs some work. One interview does not a career make, but he was absolutely awful during a CNN interview during the summer. I was embarrassed for him. I forget the topic–it may have been tax policy–but I came away thinking that he might be fine on a local level, but I won’t be looking for him to make a mark in national politics. He simply didn’t seem to have the intellectual horsepower–and I’m tired of supporting nitwits.

I don’t need Rhodes Scholars or editors of Harvard Law Review. But I do insist that the GOP begin consistently running candidates who can intelligently and coherently speak to the issues of the day. Neither Bush nor McCain can do so.

To all you crybabys in mourning for this country today, I have one thing to say.

If you’re not going to stand and fight now when it’s more important than ever to do so, then just please die on the side of the road like a good victim does and clear the path for the real survivors who will overcome this.

Now is not the time to roll up in a fetal position and suck our thumbs. I getting sick of this mourning period some of you have yourself stuck in.

Is this how Americans deal with adveristy? No. Suck it up! You’re either part of the solution or part of the problem.

Here’s some motivation for you:

Bachman would be an excellent VP for Jindal. I hope 2012 is Jindal vs Palin in a friendly race designed to pick the one who can best run vs Comrade Obama or Lady Hillary if Obama does as badly as I expect.

***

And please – no mention of Jeb Bush. Nice guy but lets the silver lining of thos year be that we are rid of the RINO Bushes and the RINO McCain.

bill30097 on November 5, 2008 at 10:17 AM

I like Bachmann–a lot. But her delivery is too slow, and I’m not sure that she thinks well on her feet even though her background is as a tax litigator. I don’t see her as more than a rep, senator, or cabinet member.

I like Jeb Bush, but he’s sadly radioactive. He’s married to a Hispanic woman, and he was very popular among Hispanics as governor of Florida. Maybe I shouldn’t be, but I’m stunned that the GOP got crushed by Hispanic voters. The GOP needs to chip away at black conservatives and the black middle class, but I’d think Hispanics would be a far easier group to reach.

BuckeyeSam on November 5, 2008 at 10:37 AM

I’m exceedingly disappointed right now, but “tomorrow is another day.” The GOP staved off the filibuster proof Senate and that is what I am holding on to today. Bachmann winning, Coleman winning, a county close to us passed a resolution to sell beer and wine…. It’s not a great day, but we aren’t done unless we say we are. So get the crying and temper tantrums out (me, last night) and let’s get to work. We have a great future ahead of us with some wonderful young Republicans (like the list above) and we need to start fighting for and with them now to get our country back. Buck up troopers, stay sharp, and let’s roll.

Been saying that for months.

But, it is a good reminder – and I am resolved to fight back.

I thought Bachmann was toast. Some decent news for a change (no pun intended I assure you).

eyedoc on November 5, 2008 at 10:54 AM

I get knocked down
But I get up again
You’re never going to
Keep me down

Going to use that as anthem in the days to come!

That, my friend, is the way it always is! That is where it’s always at! How to keep pursuing,, keep going,, keep moving forward.
Our problem has been (I use past tense) to quit or bend over as soon as the name calling begins! Our forefathers were called a name,,, Yankee Doodle Dandy,,, sounds comical now. Not much of an insult at all. They turned it into a song and sang that song as they marched into war against the name callers! That is always the true American spirit! it will take no less courage to save this nation!!
Their spirit and blood runs in our veins still,, it just needs to be awakened!
Obama cried out to the black race in one of his books,, it went something like “arise black race,, arise to what is yours” or some such dribble.
It does not take a majority to change the future of America. It only takes a determined people. And we are it.

Hooray for Michelle Bachman! WOOT! Questioning any marxist’s patriotism is never a gaff. Matthews can pound sand.

heroyalwhyness on November 5, 2008 at 11:05 AM

Sarah needs to speak soon before McCain’s cronies go after her.

Sarah is going to have to take care of herself. That’s the way of the world,, and,, I am sure she will be more than up to it. That is the kind of leader we are looking for anyway. We can no longer be smarter than the next Republican candidate.
The leadership of the New Republican Party is going to be speaking and saying the kind of things we wished we had thought of. I am tired of it being the other way around!
The ocean is full, now, of blood and sharks. Whoever steps in will have to be able. We are surrounded on every side,, I say “Charge!”

JellyToast on November 5, 2008 at 11:10 AM

Let’s go hunt some RINOs!

Pcoop on November 5, 2008 at 11:13 AM

As long as we can still raise our heads, we are fine.
Don’t hang your heads, Conservatives.
But you Rinos-you keep your heads down in shame.
I kept up the drumbeat through this election: “McCain is too Liberal for me.”
When he became the nominee, like many of us I grudgingly agreed to vote for him. I saw flashes of Conservative principles, which gave me a little hope. But in the end…
McCain was too Liberal.

Doug on November 5, 2008 at 11:21 AM

I have already boycotted MSNBC……I hope Matthews and Olby
wither on the vine……..At least Matthews is smart enough to see the handwriting on the wall…..He agreed with Haley Barbour the other day about Obamas broken campaign funding
promise. He also had an on air tiff with Olby….too little too late……Listen Click

NEVER in the History of the Republican Party have we lost double digits for the House of Represdentatives in two consecutive election cycles.

This was a disaster. This was a disaster of biblical proportions.

All of the ones who voted for the bailout went down to defeat. Anyone taking notice of that?

Jdripper on November 5, 2008 at 11:46 AM

On the upside, people will now see what liberals do when in power since they obviously don’t believe when told. In the long run the taste of socialism could be enough to turn a couple of generations back to the center.

OK, The election was largely bought by questionable DNC money. Main stream media is, and has been in the tank for Obama & has trashed McCain and the GOP. Acorn may not have been a factor but the idea of stealing an election is disgusting, whether it is on the right or left. With all that said, it is time to move on and rebuild the alternative to left-wing politics and show why our values are better for everyone that wants to fulfill the American Dream of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. We spent far too much time attacking our opponents and not enough time on what we intend to do if our candidates are elected. We will need to let the Democratically controlled Congress and Presidency know our displeasure of any and all radical-left-leaning actions on there part. We will also need to do it in a way that makes us appear like an intelligent, responsible citizen that are expressing our views and concerns, so they wont be able to marginalize our concerns by thinking we are a bunch of ideologs. We will need to rebuild and re-educate our base and find a way to include minority voters in our dream. We will need to do all of our infighting during the Primaries, and once they are over, we will need to circle the wagons around our choice of candidates, just like the Democrats have done, so we will not errode our chances of winning; it was not the most winning strategy, what the Republicans did in criticising their own candidates during this election cycle. If we do all these things, and, the Democrats fail to deliver on their promises we will have a turn-around in 2010 similar what we had in 1994. Dean & Pelosi said “Give us a chance for the next two years.” We will be watching.

Suck it, Chris Matthews, you boob.

marklmail on November 5, 2008 at 12:36 PM

She can run for the open seat and she’ll win handily. C’mon, don’t tell me she’s better off remaining as governor if she wants to make a serious run at the GOP nomination in 4 years.

Doughboy on November 5, 2008 at 9:45 AM

I’m telling you that she would be much better off as governor: a chief executive who actually does things rather than a legislator.

Check your history: only a very few Senators have ever been elected President (and they usually make poor Presidents). Most presidents are former governors.

Bachman deserves our respect – scorned by the left, in a left state, she prevailed. Well done soldier and all those that voted for her.

Fuquay Steve on November 5, 2008 at 12:41 PM

Humor:

A first time voter (and Obama supporter) just asked me if I was sure that Barry Goldwater was a Republican and who was he, anyway.

IlikedAUH2O on November 5, 2008 at 12:41 PM

NC is crazy – it is all those people that moved down from the northeast and left their brains behind. We got a do-nothing governor, added a leftist senator and kept corrupt representatives. Wish Bachman was my rep. Well done Minnesota.

Fuquay Steve on November 5, 2008 at 12:44 PM

It was her “gaffe” that made me send her money. I hope Congresswoman Bachman sends Tweety a thank you note.

Blake on November 5, 2008 at 12:59 PM

Michelle Bachman is great. I gave to her campaign the idiots at NRCC pulled their $.

I will not give to the NRCC EVER – only to specific candidates. They clearly are clueless. Unfortunately some good conservatives lost – we need to take back the party from its McCain RINOs.

I still dont know anyone who voted for McCain in the primaries…or who at least admits it.
