The last time I saw behavior like this was around 1997-1998 when the media started running stories on this handsome young Governor of Texas. At that time, I hadn’t even known President Bush had a son. But because they couldn’t stop putting his face on the screen, even with negative stories, they created the future that they most wanted to avoid.

That kind of snide remark doesn’t deserve a reply, but I will say that President Reagan was a great reader, and always writing: letters, diary entries, speeches. He was a very good writer (and editor). Remember that he had a long public career before becoming President: head of the Screen Actors Guild, public relations for GE (which included endless rubber-chicken dinner speeches), Governor of California (two terms), and political candidate from 1976 through 1980. By the time he became President he was thoroughly versed in the great issues of the time, and a fine writer, capable of encapsulating profound ideas in a pithy phrase. Read his Letters some time, and open your eyes.

Glad to see the myth around Reagan still exists. I know Americans were told that Reagan wrote his speeches. But I figured Nancy’s astrologist wrote his speech. Nancy was probably his editor too.

He’s still dead and obviously very few conservatives have used his philosophy to keep the party afloat.

McCain and his staff are trying to get in the media’s good graces by trashing Palin. I just don’t see what anyone who sees themselves as a conservative gets by bringing down Palin.

I agree. The current leaks are despicable and actually hurt McCain’s reputation just as much as Palin’s. But maybe it’s for the best if Palin is not seen as a serious contender for 2012. For one, it would at least force her to confront her shortcomings now.

Four or eight years is a long time, so maybe she can still transform herself. But the current narrow populist, attack-dog Palin I see right now will not be elected president by the country.

Even then, he formulated most of them and didn’t read a speech until he had gone through it and edited it himself.

So quit whining and back biting, forget about Palin and Romney. I have seen no indication from Palin that she has the necessary understanding of economics or is quick enough on her feet to explain conservatism and fillet liberalism in interviews or a debate, and Romney has no shot, fair or not he comes off as to slick.

Let’s find another great communicator.

Not with this campaign. IMO he was much more comfortable thumbing his nose at the Republican base than he ever was actually fighting to win. Making sure that his campaign ran smoothly should have been one of his priorities – we have to give Obama credit for doing that.

McCain was not thumbing his nose at the Republican base. He was trying to get the base to think rational and logically because the Bush agenda has failed the Republicans in this country. People didn’t vote loyalty to conservative doctrine, they voted their bank accounts. McCain didn’t lose this- Bush’s lack of leadership made the Republicans lose everything they gained in the last 25 years. And right now, you don’t have the leadership or the organization to pull things back together. So instead, it’s “Bash Palin” to deflect the failures of so many men in the Republican party.

So boo hoo – his one note campaign issue got swept away with my 401. I except my President to be able to handle the unexpected.

Well sadly, this country has been stuck with a President who doesn’t handle the unexpected well. From Katrina to this financial meltdown, Bush has not incorporated any of the fiscal conservative methods that could have help the problems. Bush is reactive, never pro-active.

Well maybe McCain needed bigger ones then. Why did he let the media decide how to run his campaign? Be honest – he dabbled in bringing up character issues – his choice – but everytime the media jumped on him McCain backed down.

The media controlled everyone’s campaign. They destroyed every candidate on both sides to make room for Obama. Never a negative word said about Obama, but everyone else was torn down. Did McCain back down some times? Yes, because I don’t think he was very comfortable with character assissination. By the way, this year, it wouldn’t have worked. In the end, no one cared about Rev Wright and Bill Ayers because they were worried about their money and future. The Republican Party ITSELF provided NO solutions and NO assurance to the American people. Too many Republicans busy trying to hold on to their seats… which they lost so many, even in places there conservative movement should be strong.

Actually while I agree that Bush didn’t do the Republicans any favors it seems to me like conservatives bailed on him when he didn’t march strictly to their agenda. See I’m not a big C Conservative. I’m a moderate who came to the Republican ticket after Palin was picked. IMO she was the only candidate who actually was not part of the problem so even with her shortcomings I thought she might actually be different than the boys in the club.

Well katiejane, I am a moderate Democrat who will be leaving the Democratic Party this year. I was disgusted the way the DNC treated Hillary and anyone else who got in the way of their “golden child”, Obama. I am disgusted with the media who once held McCain in high regard, only to trash him and his ideas to make Obama look better. Obama played the race card and the MSM helped him do it. And I thought the Palin pick was a stroke of brilliance, but too many Republicans and conservatives were jealous of her and too busy trying to self-promote than to look for what is good for the conservative movement.

It is the Republican Party that has failed because they didn’t think past Bush. Now Bush will bring down the party with him- if the Republicans don’t stop in-fighting and look at some new goals.

Palin’s rant on jouralism sounds like a word by word expression of Vladimir Putin’s views on “managing” the media. If only Sarah were in charge, she could keep those journalists under control and stop Couric from asking those “unfair” questions that expose her ignorance.

I’ll back haner on this one. Reagan did write most of his speeches throughout his political career, if not necessarily while the POTUS.

Point is this infighting is counterproductive. I would prefer to hear specifics on policy issues, should the GOP support cap and trade like McCain, or in what form should the party propose to reform health care.

This infighting is creating a vacuum the democrats are only too willing to fill. Support your Republican congressman if you have one you like or find one you do like and give them support. The party needs new leadership and this Monday morning quarterbacking does not move us any closer to that goal.

Conservatives will never win unless people understand the reasons behind our ideas and how and why they will benefit. And nobody since Reagan has been able to communicate that effectively. It falls on us. The days when merely championing low taxes for everybody, even the rich and corporations, and deregulation were winning messages are over. We must champion conservative values, but go about reeducating the public on why they are beneficial, and destroying liberal arguments.

Much as I like Sarah Palin, I must admit Aurelius is right. Ronald Reagan spent years in the hinterlands writing, thinking, and talking about conservative ideas. He had the knack of being able to distill complex ideas to their essentials (which of course led the liberal elite to dismiss him as a ‘dunce’), and to communicate them brilliantly. Maybe Gov. Palin in a decade or two will be able to play in the major leagues, but it’s pretty clear she was brought up from the minors too early. In the meantime, we need to look elsewhere—maybe to Louisiana?
