It begins: Palin didn’t know Africa was a continent, claims Fox News

posted at 8:15 pm on November 5, 2008 by Allahpundit

Via Ace, a tasty pile of shinola straight from the stovetop of disgruntled McCain staffers. It’s too cute by half, as is the detail about NAFTA; they might as well have tossed in a story about her having to guess who’s buried in Grant’s tomb. To believe it, you have to believe she figured out a way to become governor of Alaska while somehow lacking the mental power to piece together which three nations might be involved in the North American Free Trade Agreement. Diehard ‘Cuda-haters like Sullivan will, of course, be more than happy to oblige.

You’ll find another clip from Fox that aired earlier today below the Carl Cameron video. See if you can figure out the thematic link. Exit question: If she’s really this much of an abject imbecile, how did that detail manage to escape the attention of Newsweek? There’s no sign of it in their highlight reel of the dishiest dirt they learned about the campaign, a piece which actually includes a quote from another aide about “Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast” as if to prove that they’re not holding back on the ‘Cuda.

Update: The plot thickens.

As the Dad of a Special Girl (now 21) I can identify with
Sarah and her family. She will now go North to Alaska (without John Wayne) where she has the highest approval rating of any governor in America in the largest state in America.

The Beltway Elite have cost the Republicans this election.

Sarah is being used as a Scapegoat because she is not a product of The Beltway or Ivy League Schools.

God Bless her and her family. If she wishes to seek another political office in the future, more power to her.

She is already more qualified than the POTUS – Elect.

FOx should be working on getting the Khalidi tape released….@ssholes.

That’s right. I want to see BO proclaim Israel has no right to exist and is loaded with terrorists..on the other hand that might rile up the Zionist assassins and we wouldn’t want that.
How’s about the little Palestinian kids putting on the skit of draping American, Israeli and UK flags over other little kids and then symbolically beheading them! A lesson in how to teach and keep hate going..
That BO sure keeps good company, doesn’t he?? What in the hell has > 1/2 of the electorate done to make him President-elect. How in the world could any Jew vote for him? Somebody please explain this to me…and I am a WASPY as they get…help me Jesus!

Irony

Palin and Romney are the same type of concervative reformers who battled in the trenches in their state. They are being smeared in a similiar way and each time just a subset of Republicans believe it and that is potentially enough to derail them. Keep on bashing Romney…It is exactly this BS that gave the nomination to the anemic Mccain.

Romney/Palin 2012

Resolute on November 5, 2008 at 10:08 PM

Sarah Palin is a very nice woman with many admirable qualities. I would like to go on a date with someone like her and would like someone like her to be my neighbor. But I don’t want someone like her dealing with Putin and loose nukes in 4 years unless she seriously shows us she has what it takes.

Speedwagon82 on November 5, 2008 at 10:02 PM

Putin has already made his move , when he heard about the “dialog” candidate.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,447204,00.html

“Medvedev appeared to be trying to improve Russia’s bargaining position in potential talks with the Obama administration on missile defense. His wording suggested Russia would reverse the decision if the U.S. scraps its missile defense plans.”

MrC_5150 on November 5, 2008 at 10:09 PM

No excuses for Carl Cameron. None. There’s an old saying in the news business that if you can’t confirm it and source it properly you don’t report it. For trash talking the claim of unnamed sources usually doesn’t cut it unless you’re Geraldo or Olby slinging fertilizer.

In 1976 there was a likable, photogenic governor of Heartland origin who ran for president. He didn’t get the nomination. That year’s uninspiring nominee Gerry Ford lost to Peanut Carter who had promised the world to the handout crowd and then wrecked the economy with 21 pct interest rates and a misery index. Yet that former governor of California patiently stood the course, stuck to his principles, kept above the bickering and four years later later was sworn in as the president who restored the economy and won the Cold War. Remember that.

CanadianGuy on November 5, 2008 at 10:09 PM

Its not like Romney hasnt done this stuff before. Look the otehr way while his staff does crap.

Im sure Huck will start blaming him. Look for Huck and Mitt to erupt real soon.

William Amos on November 5, 2008 at 9:42 PM

My money’s actually on Huckster for this, if it’s anyone outside the campaign. Before Palin showed up, who had the most pull with the Christian conservatives?

Huckster, it was going to be his big base for 2012.

Then Sarah Palin showed up.

Who do you think has more pull with Christian conservatives now?

Other problem for Huckster: Palin’s appeal goes beyond Christian Conservatives and also resonates with the rest of the Conservative Coalition. Huckster simpley doesn’t have that kind of appeal.

One last point:

Romney already said he’s not running in 2012. He feels he can do more for the GOP out in the real world and he’s right. He’s far better suited to fundraising and networking and getting the message out. He’s found his place in the Big Picture and he’s taken to it. Add to that the fact that religious bigotry within the GOP (and America at large) it’s highly doubtful he could ever hope to win the nomination, let alone a presidential election, sadly, but true. I voted for the guy but back then, I actually believed it was about nominating the best overall candidate.
Wasn’t aware of the religious litmus test for some folks in the GOP and, to be fair, America at large.

Romney will play an important role in this party for years to come. Just not as a candidate.

Huckabee’s best chance for the nomination pretty much vanished the minute Palin was introduced as the VP nom.

Thus, Quo Bono?

Who profits from smearing Palin?

Romney, who doesn’t want the nomination, has no shot at it even if he did, knows it, and has moved on to more productive Party oriented activities OR Huckabee who’s chances of getting anywhere near a presidential ballot are obliterated by Palin’s presence as a viable candidate?

I’ll bet you’ve got a great porn collection…

Look, politicos in Alaska had been trying to work out a way to get natural gas to the lower 48 for 30 years before Palin became governor. She saw the big picture and produced a contract to build a pipeline in less than 2 years.

The question isn’t whether you’d like to take her out on a date or not. The question is why a woman with that level of accomplishment would waste “hello,” let alone an evening, on a loser like you.

Excellent observation. Huckabee does appear a little too smug everytime I see him on TV. But I thought he was just gloating because he finally got his dream of being the host of a talk show rather than a talking head.

sherry on November 5, 2008 at 10:14 PM

Greta’s running a part of her show, on these leaks.

Personally, I think the aids, and everyone involved in the campaign know everyone is looking them, and holding them responsible, for the cluster muck, of the campaign, and how it was run.

Rather than accept, a smidge of responsibility, they find ways to blame Palin.

C’mon. Not knowing Africa is a continent, or the countries involved in NAFTA? They’re grasping there. They’re out of jobs, and not likely to find anything in the near future, after their bang up job for McCain.

McCain is bitter now. This was his last chance, and he knows it. So why not jump on the bandwagon. She gained more popularity, and now she needs to be blamed for the loss.

Gina on November 5, 2008 at 10:15 PM

These same campaign staffers were being routinely denounced for their botched handling of Palin’s roll out. In his NYT’s column Bill Kristol told McCain to fire his campaign staff.

And so now these same staffers turn around and claim that it wasn’t their fault that they botched Palin — it was Palin’s fault! She was just so completely stupid. And she wouldn’t listen to them when they tried to prep her for her interviews.

This is clearly a cover your you-know-what maneuver. Who in their right minds would ever hire these staffers again? The only way for them to repair their image is to claim that they were dealing with damaged goods and they did the best they could with this rube.

I find their leaked back-biting utterly unconvincing. Take a look at this interview she gave in July 2007. Does this sound like a moron to you? Does this sound like a person who doesn’t understand basic civics or congressional budgeting or school funding or trade agreements?

And when did she have time to go on this shopping spree? How is it that the press never witnessed this? She just doesn’t strike me as someone who would be a profligate spender with RNC money. And even if she did, it strikes me as an example of needing clothes asap. When you’re thrust on the national stage, you need to look the part. The media obsessed about Clinton’s clothes, and Palin must have known they would do the same to her. Who knows. I am always disappointed to hear something that seems so contrary to everything we already know about a person.

But if she was really into accumulating bling, then why didn’t she just take bribes like everyone else in Alaska? She had a perfect opportunity to do this when she chaired their oil and gas commission. Instead she turned in her party’s chair and quit — even though that could have ended her political career and meant the loss of income at a time when she was her family’s primary breadwinner. And when she became governor, why did she get rid of the private chef? You could argue that she got rid of the plane because that was a campaign promise, but why the chef? If she liked living the high life, she would have surely kept the chef.

And if she were really such a nasty diva, you’d think that it would out itself in some small way, but she was in front of tens of thousands of people working rope lines at rallies and we saw no flicker of temper tantrums or even a suggestion of a nasty personality. She always looked like such a happy warrior.

This is crap through and through.

Before Greta went to Alaska she had an attitude problem, but she went there and, IMHO, saw that Sarah Palin is the real deal. I think she gave her a fair shake. Greta has not been all fawning praise, but she has been fair — she’s offered some criticism, and she’s defended Palin when necessary. Despite her personal preferences, I do think Greta cares about ethical journalism.

For that alone I respect her.

BTW, Greta is talking about this right now with Karl Rove. She said she talked with 2 Palin aides and they said the accusations the McCain aides made were false.

It is the figures like Romney and Palin that the Beltway fears and loathes. Cameron has confirmed himself to be an ass in the wrong job.

While I may differ with Greta on political views she can spot a political con-job in progress in a hurry. Recall how quickly she was on to the Aruban government’s cover up for the van der Sloots (son and father) and Kalpoe brothers and that government’s attempts to smear the late Holloway girl, then the scapegoat hotel worker and eventually the attempts to smear her parents. To Greta’s credit she wanted to know the real deal about the Holloways and the real deal about the Palins and by seeing and visiting rather than merely gossiping (like sleazy Cameron) she became properly informed in her opinions by finding things out for herself.

Carl Cameron should be sacked tomorrow morning. Do the right thing Mr. Ailes.

Sarah Palin is the reason McCain was not totally humiliated yesterday. He wanted her his advisors didn’t. He never seemed to resent that our enthusiam was higher for her than for him. All these little people disparaging her now are low lifes the GOP could do without. I will continue to pary for both of them and I bet you she never comes back to the lower 48… I never have believed she did this out of ambition but out of a sense of duty when called. She showed a lot of us what a great pro life small gov’t pro military happy wife and mother is and oh a Govenor too. I myself plan to emulate her. She is fantastic!

BTW I don’t think the GOP is coming back from this. I think it’s all over but the crying. Our youth went for the big Zero 2 to 1. The Liberals have taken over the schools and have indoctrinated our kids. Not mine, they’re in a private Christian school but they are going to be outnumbered. The latinos who snuck in here and are uneducated or were uneducated went for the O 2 to 1 and they are also starting to outnumber us. I hope my husband and I can live out our lives free to worship as we believe ( we’re in our mid 40′s so it’s goingto be a long life it seems…) Now where do we put our money so we can do that?

I graduated high school with a 3.54 GPA and 30th out of a class of 360.

kingsjester on November 5, 2008 at 10:22 PM

Sorry, 3.54 in high school is nothing to brag home about.

haner on November 5, 2008 at 10:30 PM

McCain needs to stand down, and tell his people to get behind Palin or jump ship, preferably in mid-ocean.

Palin needs to stand up, and start elucidating her vision for America. Yep, elucidating is different than bloviating or pontificating.

drunyan8315 on November 5, 2008 at 10:31 PM

Screw Romney. The guy had a bazillion dollars and couldn’t beat McCain. How the hell is he going to beat Obama? For whatever reason, the guy can’t win votes.

CanadianGuy on November 5, 2008 at 10:27 PM

That bigot Huckabee played the “Christian leader” card. Which is code for religious bigots to vote against Romney. Had that bigot dropped out of the race, Romney would be president elect right now.

Dang, there are so many great comments in this thread. Like this one
Oh the irony. McCain and his staffers didn’t have the ball* to attack Obama yet they have no problem attacking GOv Palin.

Ouch!

My wife, a PUMA, said the same thing as this, just before swearing to never vote for another Republican, other than SArah:
Anyone want to start with the story of Palin “throwing a tantrum”, which for males would be “Give ‘Em Hell” Harry?
TheEJS on November 5, 2008 at 8:52 PM

Did Sarah have her reasons? Dam* right
My guess is she got frustrated at the milquetoast campaign they were running. My impression from the early interviews was that she was afraid to answer the questions for herself and was trying to go by the campaign template. Her earlier interviews (cspan) etc. before she was picked are evidence of that imo. My guess is she finally said fark it and went rogue at the end and that really pissed off the campaign.

bluejacket on November 5, 2008 at 8:37 PM
In summary, this one says it for me
Whoever it is, be it McCain or his handlers…Whoever is trying to do this should be very careful. Right now conservatives AND republicans arent too happy with his bungling of things.
Best shut up and get back to the senate where you belong, and leave the future to the Palins of the party.
Your time is done. You’ve more than had your shot.
Now pipe down.
Handel on November 5, 2008 at 8:39 PM

james23 on November 5, 2008 at 10:33 PM

I was very sad last night when McCain said he had failed us, because I thought that he had never failed America, ever. But after hearing the ugly smears that he’s allowing his campaign perpetuate about Palin, I do think he failed us and I’m sad that the Messiah didn’t humiliate him more with a bigger victory. It isn’t heroic to smear a colleague who you personally chose as your running mate to preserve your own legacy and it doesn’t help either the country or the party. McCain should just take his lumps and admit that he was defeated by a lousy campaign. And then you should get back to what he does best… betraying the Republican party in the Senate.

As I think about this, perhaps McCain should have accepted Kerry’s offer in 2004 like the turncoat he was. Then, we’d be celebrating President-elect Giuliani tonight rather than contemplating eight years of hope and change.

1.Medical Records.
2.Birth Certificate.
3.Pass Port records.
4.College G.P.A
5.College Thesis.
6.Law records.
7.Senate records
8.Video of Khalidi dinner (the tape the LA Times won’t release)

etc,….

christene on November 5, 2008 at 10:29 PM

How do you know that the video, number 8 you mention, was not given to the LA Times by a McCain operative who demanded the LA Times not release it?

College GPA? What possibly reason would you want that when we just had 8 years of an idiot and you ran a guy who finished at the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy. Do you think they just make you #1 in your law class just because you show up? Get a grip.

THere are a ton of things that are never released by candidates, both sides never mention all that is released but point to all that is not released by the other side.

THere are a bunch of records never released by McCain, but who cares?

As long as their are 25 percent of the population in a state like Texas who believes Obama is still a muslim, then I am of the opinion that no matter how much information you release there will still be those who will find fault with a missing period or a “t” that is not crossed.

You are one.

Maybe not today, since there are no losers and the curriculum has been reduced to the lowest common denominator.

Back in the day, though, a 3.54 was a real accomplishment. Especially with the curve.

Unfortunately for you and the rest of the majority who voted for the “One” who wants to drive up electricity costs and the bankrupt coal industry, you chose what is coming. I voted against ridiculous economic policies that will destroy an already ailing economy. Witness the stupidity of my fellow Pennsylvanians who could not have gone more cooperatively to the slaughter than the sheeple they are.

I can hardly wait to hear the mindless masses bleating over their inflated electric bills when they start rolling in. Did you ever try and argue with a company that has no competition? Good luck with that.

School today is indeed sorry. We witnessed that first hand with Ms Palin. If only we still taught Civics in school …

Monkei on November 5, 2008 at 10:38 PM

Hannity said he wants Obama to be a successful president because they alternative is that he is not successful, and thus we are screwed. He also listed about 1,245 possible policy decisions, and said that if he followed through on those (many of which hearken back to his campaign), he’d be on his ass.

He and Neal Boortz were especially conciliatory today, but only inasmuch as they respect the office of the president, IMHO.

The thought of Palin, Romney or Huckabee again for 2012 nauseates me.

Surely we have more talent than these three hacks?

Palin is woefully ignorant and a 40% candidate.
Romney is a chameleon and an asshole.
Huckabee is a faux Christian liberal.

How about a real fiscal conservative who has read the Federalist Papers and actually has a clue (without reading talking points)? How come we can’t have a presidential candidate like John Roberts?

What happened to celebrating competence?
