It begins: Palin didn’t know Africa was a continent, claims Fox News

Via Ace, a tasty pile of shinola straight from the stovetop of disgruntled McCain staffers. It’s too cute by half, as is the detail about NAFTA; they might as well have tossed in a story about her having to guess who’s buried in Grant’s tomb. To believe it, you have to believe she figured out a way to become governor of Alaska while somehow lacking the mental power to piece together which three nations might be involved in the North American Free Trade Agreement. Diehard ‘Cuda-haters like Sullivan will, of course, be more than happy to oblige.

You’ll find another clip from Fox that aired earlier today below the Carl Cameron video. See if you can figure out the thematic link. Exit question: If she’s really this much of an abject imbecile, how did that detail manage to escape the attention of Newsweek? There’s no sign of it in their highlight reel of the dishiest dirt they learned about the campaign, a piece which actually includes a quote from another aide about “Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast” as if to prove that they’re not holding back on the ‘Cuda.

Update: The plot thickens.

Hey, I was a Reagan supporter in 1979 when I was five years old too! I can’t prove it really, but I’ll just say it out loud because who can claim otherwise!

And you still ignore the idea that McCain was NOWHERE without Sarah and despite your claims to the contrary, I see no evidence the base of conservatives would not support her, a group McCain ignored to his detriment. Again.

The Mccain campaign was completely anemic. An exciting figure like Palin was the only thing that kept it from being a disaster. If Mccain staff wants to trash her, they are just confirming they were the ones out of touch.

Let us all recall that we allowed the MSM to pick Mccain in the primary as the conservatives across the country all bought hook, line and sinker the media smears on Romney. Romney is a concervative warrior figure who stood up to his state’s established burecracy – a figure much like Palin.

This MA Republican warned you

Resolute on November 5, 2008 at 9:39 PM

When I emailed both McCain and the RNC, I mentioned Reagan’s commitment to his fellow Republicans

Well as Republican we supported McCain’s campaign and THIS is how they treat Governor Palin.

Absolutely disgraceful … I guess these “unnamed sources” never played team sports … you don’t go around telling people what was said in the locker room and you don’t go around throwing your teammates under the bus when you lose … its my ultimate judgment on which people are garbage and which people are not.

Gina on November 5, 2008 at 9:39 PM

Whoever is leaking this bullshit will hopefully never get another campaign job. They need to accept that they did not do a good job. Rather than trying to lay blame on a candidate, they should reflect to see how they did not spin that candidate well. My god, the Democrats got John Kerry to look like a viable candidate. It can’t be that hard.

Kamikaze on November 5, 2008 at 9:39 PM

That kind of low-blow backbiting from the McCain camp is very upsetting. If they’re upset with Palin, it’s because she was showing up the top of the ticket. She was doing her doo-dahs by being the typical attack dog.

This other crap is just that; crap.

IMHO, she’s the natural face of the conservative wing of the Republican party — the segment of the party that needs to stop those Democrat appeasers, the ones who tried to out Democrat the Democrats.

I hope she goes on a national program and stomps Carl the Cur like the dog he is.

Tennman on November 5, 2008 at 9:40 PM

Actually, I’m thinking Romney/Jindal. Palin would be a fantastic Sec of Energy. By the time 2012 comes around, we’re going to desperately need a good Energy Secretary.

ErinF on November 5, 2008 at 9:31 PM

If Romney is behind this smearing of Palin — and I’m hearing some plausible speculation that he is — then I wouldn’t cast a vote for that man if he were running for dog catcher. We don’t need snakes in the Republican party.

Jindal, Flake, Palin, Boehner — there are plenty of good folks for the next round. Just don’t give me any more “moderate” Republicans; they make me sick, and they always lose.

By the way, pay attention to Newt Gingrich’s American Solutions initiative; he’s doing some remarkably sound thinking, picking initiatives that play into issues where 70% or more of the American people are on board. He’s responsible for “Drill Here, Drill Now,” an initiative that actually worked because it had the support of more than 50% of Democratic voters as well as the vast majority of Republicans.

After looking at the numbers and rethinking this election for a night since I couldn’t sleep, I don’t think there would have been any chance the GOP would have won, period.

I guess it is easy for me, or anyone here, to play Wednesday evening quarterback. I did want to say, after reading your post, that I think if McCain had stood against the bail out, he would have won. This was his chance to show leadership and present a plan that could solve the financial crisis in a different fashion, as was proposed by some of the Republican House members. It appears that the economy was the central issue about this election, and in hindsight, many of the tactics employed seemed to have not helped…but who really knows in advance what will or won’t work?

What’s most important now is for everyone who calls themelves a conservative to reflect on what that means, to develop a clear set of principles that are matched by succinct policy proposals, and begin to look for leadership that embraces our values and can convince voters to allow them the privilige of representing us.

Liberals are continuing the “attack Sarah” methods now to try to avoid the Sarah Palin landslide in 2012.

She’s a genuine and capable person and it seems many on the Right realize that. So, sorry, Liberals, you can’t stop a train with a rainbow.

S on November 5, 2008 at 9:41 PM

CNN is reporting that senior McCain adviser Randy Scheunemann was fired by Rick Davis for leaking stuff to reporters and siding up with Palin against the McCain staff (at least according to the McCain staff sources). Pretty good secret they sat on, if true, but this is going to ugly.

okonkolo on November 5, 2008 at 9:41 PM

I saw “Campaign Carl” on O’Reilley tonight, breathlessly tattling on Palin, like a little schoolgirl who wants to get another girl “in trouble.” Totally pathetic hit piece by this eunuch fraud.

Now, lets get down to bid’ness. Who are the McCain staffers talking trash now? Lets name names. Mark “Lose With Honor” Salter, the author of the biography as platform strategy? Steve Schmidt, alleged Rove protege who concocted the ’suspend the campaign’ strategy when the market panic hit? Nicole Wallace, the Bush Campaign “communications expert”? Name names.

NONE of these skunks should be allowed within ten miles of any GOP campaign in the future. In fact, the Salter-Schmidt endorsement is, for me going forward, the kiss of death. I will not support any candidate that would retain such a disloyal, disfunctional, incompetent bunch.

Now I’m starting to wonder if it isn’t a blessing that McCain, who presided over this disfunctional bunch, will not be running our massive US Gov’t.

Also, Romney and his crew emerge from this with several more black marks on their collective resume. I cannot tell you how glad I am that this two bit “big government conservative” phony got crushed by the incompetent McCAin. Not a chance I will support Romney in ‘12, in the primary or the general.

james23 on November 5, 2008 at 9:41 PM

Sorry but this is disgusting McCain staffers showing the ultimate liberal behavior by not taking responsibility for their own actions. Somehow I’m not worried about Sarah Palin she seems to be able to take it and dish it right back out. It is probably motivating her not demoralizing her. As an equestrian we have a saying you never blame it on the horse!

indythinker on November 5, 2008 at 9:43 PM

The thing about the clothes story is this:

On the one hand you have an anonymous donor that offered to buy her clothes, and was shocked and appalled when he got the final bill.

Except when you have aides that charged the clothes to their credit cards, and are all affronted because they haven’t been reimbursed.

Except when campaign money was used to pay for the clothes which will be returned or donated to charity.

And then there’s the matter of who actually bought the clothes.

To hear the aides tell it they charged the clothes to their credit cards (meaning they bought the clothes for her) because as was previously stated, they are all affronted that they have not been reimbursed.

Except when the Hicks of Wasilla looted every Neiman Marcus in this fine country, meaning they did so in person.

Except that every day since it was announced that Palin was the Veep nom, the media has been on her ass like white on rice, and they didn’t know about the clothes story until it was leaked. Which means she probably didn’t loot any Neiman Marcus stores anywhere.

I have to believe that if she and her hick husband and young were ravaging good and decent upscale department stores then the media would have followed her on her quest to hickify those fine establishments, there would have been footage, thus negating the need for an “anonymous source.”

Some dumbass aides spent too much money and are trying to cover their asses.

I have had it with the back-stabbing, two-faced, sniveling, throw you under the bus just to buy a friend, piranha-like, political cannibals who call themselves the republican party. If this is how they treat the good and decent woman, Sarah Palin, after she CARRIED THEIR ENTIRE PITIFUL CAMPAIGN, then they can rot in Hell. I will never support Romney, the slithering snake in the grass, or any other RINO, or moderate, or isle-reacher acrosser again!

Chris37 on November 5, 2008 at 9:47 PM

You need to take a serious look at yourself and that hero worship syndrome you are tauting. Read some of the comments here – Sarah Palin has become The Right Wing – The One.

Not so. Palin went through hell because she chose to serve. Given that, I have no doubt things were rough behind the scenes. And some people got their feelings hurt. But to put out this litany of complaints the day after losing the election is poor form. Further, I’m convinced that some of their criticisms just don’t hold water. So this isn’t about deifying Palin (we all know there can only be one One, right?), it’s frustration at seeing her attacked in an unfair way.

Dee2008 on November 5, 2008 at 9:47 PM

Say what you want about Palin’s interview skills or world knowledge.

There’s are two things that has not been discussed on Palin in the press, and that’s her RECORD. She has one, so does Obama but the MSM won’t report about it.

The second, personal character or if you choose a moral compass. She has it, Obama has proven despite the MSM’s attempts to hide it does not have it at any level.

I believe she would put America first. Obama has proven he won’t. So spare me the “inside scoop” of career political players.

Hog Wild on November 5, 2008 at 9:47 PM

More likely it’s the Noonan / Parker / Will crowd still with their knickers in a twist who can’t stand the thought that someone who doesn’t scoff (like them) over cocktails in lofty, high-brow speech about how the squash team captain made a pass at Buffy during the yacht outing before the Yale Prom … can dare scoot into town from Alaska (that state is in Jack London novels, for crissakes!!) and steal the VP show from the country-clubbers whose Brahmin roots, real or imagined, only entitle THEM to such peerage.

Carl “The Gossip” Cameron reminds me of that poor, batty girl who is / was certain Karl Rove (who has never heard of her) said he was plotting against former Alabama Democrat Governor (and now convict) Don “The Don” Siegelman. I had my doubts about Carl about a month ago when he was peddling some line / rumor about Palin’s (now cleared) employee firing decisions as governor. I haven’t trusted Carl since.

RIGHT. And as you just explained (those comments of yours), it’s likely as not the “aids” who are seeking recompense (ego-wise, justification-wise, compensation-wise) by speaking to the media.

ALL of those “aids” needs to submit a bill to the Campaign Director and then practice good business if the bill remains unpaid over whatever their terms are for payment of expenses/props/campaign necessities.

I thought Shep and Carl looked and sounded immensely stupid for even referring to this tonight, sorta’ like rejected decorators or something: “well, YOUR taste is bad, look at YOUR design, it’s awful, MY design is courageous and bold!

Unbelievable. If McCain is allowing this to happen, he is a hypocrite. He openly defended his opponent at a rally in Wisconsin but yet he allows his staff to discredit his running mate. My guess is that he had no idea she would end up being the ONLY draw to his campaign. When she was filling up arenas, he had problems pulling in enough people to fill a high-school gym. V15J on November 5, 2008 at 9:53 PM

Let me see if I can get this straight. The campaign staffers who were roundly criticized by conservatives for completely botching Palin’s rollout now tell us that it wasn’t their fault. They tell us that they did the best they could, but Palin was a complete moron who was unwilling to listen to them. Bill Kristol wrote in his NYT’s column that McCain should fire the Palin staffers for their mishandling of her. And who would ever hire these idiots after the way they failed Palin? So, the best way for them to cover their you-know-whats is to turn it around and say that Palin was a total idiot who wouldn’t listen to them. She was a shop-a-holic profligate (they can’t tell us when exactly she had time to do this shopping considering her nonstop campaign schedule). And she was a diva who made staffers cry after yelling at them. Yep, it’s not the staffers fault — it’s Palins.

Funny how Palin was able to fool so many people. She met hundreds of thousands of Americans in endless rope lines and she never let loose any temper tantrums or gave the appearance of being a mean-spirited diva. She always looked like such a happy warrior.

Check out this interview from July 2007.

Does this sound like a woman who doesn’t understand basic civics or governing principles or trade issues or school funding and budget issues or trade agreements? This is not a stupid woman.

As for the shop-a-holic charge, if she were truly interested in amassing wealth, then why didn’t she just take bribes like all the other politicians in Alaska? She has a perfect opportunity to do this when she was Chair of Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. Instead she blew the whistle on her party’s chairman, which could have effectively ruin her chances of advancing in state politics, and she quit her first big six figure job at a time when she was her family’s primary bread winner, and she had no other job lined up. Why do that if you are only out for bling? When she was elected governor, why did she find it necessary to get rid of the private chef? I can understand getting rid of the jet because she campaigned on that promise. But why the chef? If she really liked living like a diva, she would have kept the chef.

She just doesn’t strike me as someone who would be a profligate spender with RNC money. And if she did, it strikes me as an example of needing clothes asap. When you’re thrust on the national stage, you need to look the part. The media obsessed about Clinton’s clothes, and Palin must have known they would do the same to her. Who knows. I am always disappointed to hear something that seems so contrary to everything we already know about a person.

This whole thing stinks to high heaven.

This rumor mongering and public airing of matters that should remain internal is childish and counterproductive.

BacaDog on November 5, 2008 at 9:54 PM

Whatever. They want to spend the next 4 years beating her up. I hope she comes back with better ammo and ally’s in 2012.

johnnyU on November 5, 2008 at 9:55 PM

Sour grapes for the Romney staffers who are positioning for a 2012 run. Smell that? ….It’s fear of Palin Power.

Where are the Clinton tattle tales? …you know they’re out there.

virtue gal on November 5, 2008 at 9:55 PM

Nope. Not watching this one either. I’m done with snarky vids of Sarah.

thomasaur on November 5, 2008 at 9:27 PM

I do beleive that kind of vetting is still illegal in NC.

Fuquay Steve on November 5, 2008 at 9:55 PM

The more I think about this, the more angry I get. This woman got dragged into this campaign because McCain (in his infinite wisdom) thought he could pick up 17.9 million Hillary voters. Then Sarah struck a chord with America. She was instructed and coached by poor campaign managers and instead of blaming themselves, they throw her under the bus. She will survive, while McCain just went down a notch.

FOx should be working on getting the Khalidi tape released….@ssholes.

Governor Palin is STILL my gal.

ex-Democrat on November 5, 2008 at 9:57 PM

i may be off base, but i thought she WAS vetted. all ive ever heard is that mac knew full well about the pregnancy and oked it immediately. she was on the short list ever since that NRO cruise to alaska in 06 i thought.

battleoflepanto1571 on November 5, 2008 at 9:47 PM

Whether she was vetted appropiately has always been questionable.

AprilOrit on November 5, 2008 at 9:57 PM

Wasn’t Fox News the only news outlet that showed the New Black Panther Party thugs outside the polling place in Philly?
Now, all of a sudden, they are in bed with Obama. I am more angry with the McCain aides than with Cameron. He is just doing his job by reporting what they said. And yes, he should follow up with Palin. I hate this backstabbing, but it’s not Fox News’ fault.

ClericalGal on November 5, 2008 at 9:57 PM

Sour grapes for the Romney staffers who are positioning for a 2012 run.

I do know one think if Palin is damaged by this I will actively work to stop Mitt Romney for any office.

If any of you Romney haters have proof he’s involved, post it or STFU.

Fuquay Steve on November 5, 2008 at 9:57 PM

Why are people smashing Romney is there proof somewhere of his involvement with this? We have people up in here quoting Regan’s llth commandment and yet here we are in fighting over speculations~
Please folks as one great Obama supporter said many a years ago, who is a felon and probably voted a few times
“Can’t we all just get along” Rodney King

PiggieSez on November 5, 2008 at 9:50 PM

Why are people bashing Romney? Because he is a typical, liberal republican who really didn’t even lift a finger to campaign for McCain/ Palin. He is exactly the type of republican that this country and its constitution has no need for. He didn’t even come close to getting the done this time, and he ain’t gonna get it done next time. Don’t waste my time with Mit Romney, consider him thrown under the bus by this conservative.

Chris37 on November 5, 2008 at 9:57 PM

Greta is going to address this. Greta has become Palinized for sure. I hope she calls Cameron out.

SouthernGent on November 5, 2008 at 9:58 PM

It’s an elitist thing , its the self selected political class against the people.

the_nile on November 5, 2008 at 9:58 PM

About Palin not being vetted. It doesn’t figure. We had been talking about her for months, since the primaries at least. How could it be that a man with over two decades in the senate who was in the middle of a presidential campaign didn’t know all about this GOP jewel of the North? Makes no sense.

We common folk had been buzzing about her–hoping, wishing, praying for her, or someone like her, consistently.

pugwriter on November 5, 2008 at 9:59 PM

Now that the election is over, none of us should really be surprised that McCain’s people are stabbing another conservative in the back.

That may be but she does not garner enough votes to win. She appeals to the Far Right base which will not win the White House. She’s somewhat like a Dennis Kucinich type, although he sits on The Far Left, in terms of appealing to a certain electorate.

AprilOrit on November 5, 2008 at 9:59 PM

McCain staffers make Bush staffers look like the A-Team.

Speedwagon82 on November 5, 2008 at 9:59 PM

Laura Ingraham show will start at 10:00 PM she seems to be Carl “The Gossip” Cameron friend. Can someone call or mail Laura and ask about that shit they run on Palin. Btw woman usually go shopping to release stress and Sarah was under extremal stress still she performed like pro. McCain is really small man if he is behind this or can’t control staffers.

will13smith on November 5, 2008 at 10:00 PM

the_nile, great point. And she was definitely one of the “people”. That’s why America likes her.

Democrats: McCain Can Mediate Standoffs
Democrats, who padded their majorities in the House and Senate, have a suggestion: McCain can mediate solutions to partisan standoffs on key legislation as he did to help avert a constitutional meltdown over judicial confirmations in 2005.

“There’s a need for the old John McCain, a leader who worked in a bipartisan way,” Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Wednesday.

I am beginning to think that it may be better to sit out for four years and come back with a bang rather than have McCain in the Oval Office worried everyday

Right now I’m glad none of McCain’s staff are measuring the drapes for theie West Wing office. Who knows what the hell else they might leak.

Sarah Palin is a very nice woman with many admirable qualities. I would like to go on a date with someone like her and would like someone like her to be my neighbor. But I don’t want someone like her dealing with Putin and loose nukes in 4 years unless she seriously shows us she has what it takes.

Speedwagon82 on November 5, 2008 at 10:02 PM

Well, While I was supporting Hillary in the primaries… I was looking some blog that was discussing Palin as a vp pick… Some folks on the blog said it was unlikely that she will be picked since she was expected to give birth to trig at the time.

Give me the stream to Laura…!

I have a soul and thankfully I worship no Tin Jesuses.

You need to take a serious look at yourself and that hero worship syndrome you are tauting.

AprilOrit on November 5, 2008 at 9:37 PM

A) No, you don’t, and the comment about “tin Jesuses” proves it. I can accept someone who doesn’t believe in God, but one who shows that level of contempt for the religion that built Western Civilization deserves no respect from anyone with an education.

B) I say “she’s not corrupt” and I’m worshiping a hero? You want to rethink that?

C) Go look up “tauting,” you incredible ignoramus, and then explain why we shouldn’t consider you as stupid as you consider Gov Palin, whom I’m betting accomplishes more in any year than you will in your entire miserable life. I can’t even imagine what you meant, but I suspect you were after “touting.” And you might rethink “thankfully,” which you used where you meant “I’m grateful to say.” Your usage there is common but completely incorrect. But you’re not as stupid as Sarah Palin, oh no. Your mistakes are what everybody does. Hers are national news. How… decent of you.

Moron.

Well, you won’t have to worry about McCain or Palin dealing with Medvedev. Instead, you’ve got Obama — you know, the guy that thinks Iran, Cuba, and Venezuela are tiny countries that mean us no harm, and Biden who thinks that we, with the help of France, drove Hezbollah out of Lebanon.

I’m sure they’ll work diligently to protect our 58 states.

haikusrock on November 5, 2008 at 10:05 PM

The scatological treatment of Palin by the Obama camp, Obamatrons and the media was one of the most appalling spectactles I thought I’d never have to witness amongst Americans.

Don’t know if this latest is just more unsubstantiated trash but if the McCain/GoP/conservative camp is now cannibalizing Palin then they deserve to lose too.

Unbelievable. America has just elected a gaping moral void for a President and they are bleating about the definition of a continent.

If this is the best America has, then the days of America as global moral power are well and truly over.

Actually, I’m thinking Romney/Jindal. Palin would be a fantastic Sec of Energy. By the time 2012 comes around, we’re going to desperately need a good Energy Secretary.

ErinF on November 5, 2008 at 9:31 PM

Why? With Pelosi and Obama in control, energy will be “illegal” by 2012.

AprilOrit on November 5, 2008 at 9:59 PM

Maybe she tacks to the center on a couple of issues and builds some intellectual credibility with the eggheads like Brooks and Will. She should be able to position herself as the top fundraiser going into the GOP primaries in 2012. The general election would likely by tough, but that is a crapshoot depending on what the public thinks of Obama going into the fall of 2012.

dedalus on November 5, 2008 at 10:07 PM

The thing that gets my goat about this is if Palin decides to run again you know the MSM is going to drag all this stuff up again… Yeah we lost, lets try not to cause problems for the next round.

Ugh.
