It begins: Palin didn’t know Africa was a continent, claims Fox News

Via Ace, a tasty pile of shinola straight from the stovetop of disgruntled McCain staffers. It’s too cute by half, as is the detail about NAFTA; they might as well have tossed in a story about her having to guess who’s buried in Grant’s tomb. To believe it, you have to believe she figured out a way to become governor of Alaska while somehow lacking the mental power to piece together which three nations might be involved in the North American Free Trade Agreement. Diehard ‘Cuda-haters like Sullivan will, of course, be more than happy to oblige.
You’ll find another clip from Fox that aired earlier today below the Carl Cameron video. See if you can figure out the thematic link. Exit question: If she’s really this much of an abject imbecile, how did that detail manage to escape the attention of Newsweek? There’s no sign of it in their highlight reel of the dishiest dirt they learned about the campaign, a piece which actually includes a quote from another aide about “Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast” as if to prove that they’re not holding back on the ‘Cuda.
Update: The plot thickens.

Another vote for the Jindal-Palin ticket.

No, many of us admire Governor Palin. Your problem is, you’re jealous.
Ever been a governor?
fogw on November 5, 2008 at 9:20 PM
Cameron was just on O’Reilly and couldn’t get the dirt out quick enough. Ingraham brought up the Romney link a week ago when a lot of the Palin trashing was coming from within the campaign. Might be some substance to it. And O’Reilly was an avid Romney supporter, so I’m not surprised he kept cueing up Cameron to dish on Sarah.
Typical sniping from the losers. Conservatives need to show some more class now, our work is cut out for us over the next couple of years.

i dont know who you are, but stop calling me idiot. ive been calling for palin ever since the Fred! ship failed.
its not the media hating her, its the PUBLIC PERCEPTION of her.
example #2: how would George macaca Allen have a future in national politics
example #3: how would Rick Santorum have a future in national politics
once you lose the indies, it’s over. look, SF freakshows and blueblood RINOS will hate any non-elite repub, from Palin to Huckabee to Oklahoma’s Coburn. but the “common man” view of Palin is about teh same as Dan Quayle (potato!) or Jeb Bush (bush!) or George Allen (macaca!)
it’s over for her in national politics, and all the ‘idiot’ namecalling in the world won’t change it, freakshow. i still think she’s awesome but LOOK AT HER POLLING NUMBERS. her unfavorables with ‘center’ women are insanely bad.
i blame the ‘dead time’ after the rollout. the gop convention was the high point… she shoudl have done hannity, rush, the local minn paper all the next few days. follow it up with ‘today show’, ‘the view’, then try to get on oprah, then do a late night show, THEN do charlie gibson — live, unedited.

Well how was it that McCain able to figure out that it was him who falsely leaked to Fred Barnes, but was unable to trace the original leaks to CNN about Palin?

Its time for the RNC to post a real Conservative the next time around, who has the guts to speak the truth and not back down.

Palin’s knowledge of things unAlaskan is appalling.
So now all this is coming out and you’re all incredulous?
She became a clown to independents once SNL made her a running joke.

Complete BS. F Carl Cameron for reporting this petty nonsense and F Shep Smith and O’Reilly for putting it on. I’ve come to expect this kind of crap from the NYT, but not Fox. If this is what we’ve got coming the next four years I’m just going to stop watching them altogether.
Dudley Smith on November 5, 2008 at 9:22 PM
Oops!
Lack of integrity in general is an enormous problem. This is one reason why I, and probably many like me, have never officially joined the RNC.
I’m in my mid-30s, by the way.
jazz_piano on November 5, 2008 at 9:22 PM
McCain had a responsibility to put a lid on the malicious “leaks” the minute they started, yet he didn’t. It was his responsibility to control his campaign, and he either failed in that responsibility or he didn’t have any real objection to the damage done to Palin (and to his own campaign) by this.
After his impassioned plea for unity under an Obama presidency in his concession speech last night, his silence in the face of this is, IMO, despicable.

I never got the clothing story. How did everyone else get their clothes—Hillary had hers provided by the designer–what about the men. I don’t mind a story on Sarah–but lets have a story on everyone. The Africa story does not sound plausable. If Ted Stevens has to step down –I hope she gets the Senate seat. Yes, she needs some Lisa Doolittle work—but so did Hillary. I thought Michelle’s dress last night was ugly–hope it was free.

With the baffoons that ran McCain’s campaign I wouldn’t except any help from them either. I would have said you booked me on what show? you idiot why didn’t you book me on Fox for my first interview so I can get the lay of the land. They lost because a bunch of idiot’s ran his campaign and sabbotaged him at every turn. Fail

If it was the Obama campaign, they shouldn’t have reported it either?
Lordy, ideology over reality.
SteveMG on November 5, 2008 at 9:23 PM
Cameron…Shep…”McCain aids”…I sense a ganging up on Palin by certain persons who, well, as Dennis Miller aptly puts it, “have mother issues.”
Once you start providing “aids” a soundbite, they’ll assume more. The moral of the story is, never allow “aids” to air their resentments to the media, or anyone else.

Oh, and if you ever do find your soul, please explain to us why, precisely, politicos are finding it useful to smear Sarah Palin. I don’t think she’s as bright as, say, Bobby Jindal, but she’s not corrupt, and I’m wondering in whose interest it is to try to make her look bad now that the election is over. Care to purge your soul — if you have one — and fill us in?

Much ado about NOTHING!
Do you realize we are about to put, as Mark Levin states correctly, “the stupidest man in DC” into the Vice-President’s office? By February, Fe-bru-ary, any thing said by Palin or McCain or whoever will take a back-seat. I can’t wait until they shove microphones in front of his face (for comedic results).

William Amos on November 5, 2008 at 9:24 PM
From the time Palin was named as the running mate, McCain’s “inside circle sycophants” couldn’t stand the fact that Sarah was instantly the star of the campaign. It was obvious (and embarassing) that she could outdraw McCain 5 to 1 at a rally and that the base was only fired up because of her.
So… they have to tear her down. Hey, we have insecure A-holes on our side too.
Sugar Land on November 5, 2008 at 9:25 PM
Cameron aghast to Shep on FOX earlier tonight, about “aids” saying Palin “went shopping” when it wasn’t — to the “aids” — necessary (she went SHOPPING, OMGosh)…these guys, so-called, don’t understand that to many women, going shopping provides necessary, needed time alone. Like going into the garage for men, say.

The McCain campaign was made of fail. Seriously, did anyone get his healthcare plan? My son had to debate SP’s part in school and we spent hours trying to get the gist of the plan. Obama ran a couple million dollars worth of ads trashing it but what did the McCain camp do about it – whine. Laying the blame on Palin is the lowest form of existence. There are countless ways this campaign fell short, none of them had to do with choosing Palin as VP.

Wow. I think the McCain people are pissed Sarahcuda stole the show, and the whole reason anyone went to any of their rallies was to see her because she was someone who actually related to them (imagine that).
I think these jerks are ticked that Sarah effectively stole the show and went “rogue” on them a few weeks ago (even though it really wasn’t rogue). She actually had the gusto to come out swinging. She actually WANTED to win.
Faux News as I now call them have lost all credibility.

Sorry. I’ve read over 300 comments here, and I’m a bit amazed at how vindictive and accusatory some are. Plus – I cannot believe how many seem to really think this is true.
To me, if it sounds like utter BS – there’s a good chance that’s exactly what it is. For a story like this, if Mr. or Ms. Smearmouth doesn’t want their name to be used, then can the story. And it is a big disappointment to see it at Fox. If I wanted likely untrue, steamy, stupid gossip, I’d head for the New York Times.

Sexism keeps creeeping in: Palin-Jindal more like it in 2012.
Remember Jindal is from the most historically corrupt and now quite defunct state in the union..not helped by its Frenchy laws. Plus he looks like Alfred E. Neuman. We know so little of him, too. Just cause he’s a guy, doesn’t put him first on the ticket.

joey24007 on November 5, 2008 at 9:29 PM
I think this whole thing about the clothes disappearing and implying that she stole them is very sketchy. I guess if she shows up in Juneau wearing a $2,000 suit and Jimmy Choos it’s true, but it seems odd that she would steal clothes that don’t fit her. It also seems weird that she would spend, what did Newsweek say? $30,000 on designer clothes for Todd. He’s an oil worker and a fisherman. Why would she buy him $1000 suits?
I could be totally off on this, but looking back over the pictures from the campaign it looks like he, actually it looks like both of them, wore the same suits and outfits numerous times. I guess we’re supposed to believe that her parents snuck $100,000 worth of clothes out of the convention and back up to Alaska for her? Could be I guess, I could probably go crazy spending somebody else’s money, but the story doesn’t sound quite right to me. It seems more likely that a staffer got a little crazy. Or maybe she’s just a big thief, and we’ll see breaking news about how she’s wearing Cole Haan boots she stole from the RNC around the capital building in Juneau.

Hawkins1701 on November 5, 2008 at 9:30 PM
After looking at the numbers and rethinking this election for a night since I couldn’t sleep, I don’t think there would have been any chance the GOP would have won, period.
Obama had this election handed to him on a silver platter. The DNC realized that with Bush’s 2 terms and low approval ratings, the time was ripe to get in Obama. Problem, Hillary and look at how they kicked her out. I keep going back to what Geraldine Ferraro said and got in trouble for and you know what that’s what this election was all about. It all came down to the historic importance and excitement of it. People need that kind of excitement. Economy, Iraq, Ayers, Wright, Razko…didn’t matter did it?
And with Hollywood, MSM, and educators, they too saw this as a great moment in civil rights history no matter what the cost.
Sure there may have been some problems in the McCain camp but Obama’s campaign was sloppy but they could afford to make mistakes and eventually play it safe. No matter what you threw at Obama, a lot of people didn’t want to believe it.
The Republican party will be doing some soul searching and the anger and frustrations are starting to show. The DNC have their disgruntled group, PUMA. I’m not sure how big they are but they are still deeply upset.
What we may see is the forming of more political parties. There were too many people crisscrossing parties this last election it seems that 2 parties cannot encompass all special interests. It happened in Canada as an example and it looks like it will happen in the US as well.
History has been made and I wonder how this election and his presidency will be printed in the history books many many years from now.
But of course there’s that birth certificate I’m still dying to see!
JayJay123 on November 5, 2008 at 9:30 PM
She was a bigger draw at the rallies than the top of the ticket–very embarrassing to the Mac staff, so of course it is necessary to destroy the outside-the-Beltway-virus before it spreads. This is just the losers shifting blame to someone else. Totally unnecessary, given that McCain ran a great campaign in spite of all the odds against any Republican. Had he not spit on his own base every chance he got, he might actually have come closer.
FalseProfit on November 5, 2008 at 9:30 PM
Hey, I was a Reagan supporter in 1979 when I was five years old too! I can’t prove it really, but I’ll just say it out loud because who can claim otherwise!
And you still ignore the idea that McCain was NOWHERE without Sarah and despite your claims to the contrary, I see no evidence the base of conservatives would not support her, a group McCain ignored to his detriment. Again.

But today’s broadcasts, all the day through, by Fox were too much, just over the top, too flexed in “servitudey-ness.” I hope it’s not a precendent for the tone we are to expect in the future from FOX because today they sounded far too much like the loathesome MSNBC (except for Hannity who can be relied on to be fair and truthful, regardless).

Kamikaze on November 5, 2008 at 9:32 PM
Another moral sewer to which we have to explain the ABCs of decency. (sigh)
Listen up, infant, you might actually become a human being if you pay attention:
1) Reporters are supposed to find NEWS. This is not news. McCain/Palin lost. What’s the news value of some unnamed aid’s opinion of the VP candidate after the election?
2) It’s not believable. She probably used the word “country” where “continent” was called for, and some catty little bast*rd made up “she didn’t know” in place of “she misspoke.” The reporter has the job of filtering out catty backbiting. What we’re hearing here is the stuff of bad gossip columns.
3) From what I hear, there were similar reports possible from the Obama campaign, specifically about his Vice President candidate, and they were NOT reported.
Now, if you want to express incredulity, why not ask the proper question, which is: “Who benefits from smearing Sarah Palin after the election is over?” ‘Cause that’s all this is.
philwynk on November 5, 2008 at 9:33 PM
No, the campaign can (and did) sequester him into silence for one-two weeks before the election, but now the man is in office. He won’t be silenced. Biden is a reporter’s dream – incredible ego and big mouth. He WILL be a SNL favorite target since it’s been ages since Quayle.

If this were true, the McCain campaign did not do a good job of vetting Palin for the VP position. I don’t believe a word of this. Sour grapes, IMO. You don’t get to where Palin is, do what she has done and be stupid.

A – what elected office has newt been in since 1998? as great as that ‘american solutions’ thing is, what has it accomplished in policy terms during republican majority rule?
B – it’s really really hard to overcome an initial perception bomb by the majority. ITS NOT FAIR. I KNOW. but go to youtube right now. go to ‘most watched last month’ (if its avaliable). 50 million hits on ‘clips that make palin look stupid’
how the F#@$ do you combat that? how do you fight that? we’ve been defending “bush, no he’s not stupid” for EIGHT YEARS, now we should do it again just because you say so?
it’s not her fault, but teh rollout and media sequestering killed her image with women & moderates. she was ALLOWED to be defined by the media, while being reined in by mccain.
it sucks. but again, tell me in what universe Jeb Bush or Dan Quayle have a future in national politics.
B – i don’t know where this idea is that i or hotair commenters agreeing with me are RINOS
I WANT THE PARTY PURGED, LONG KNIVES, and stick to conservative principles. I’m also not stupid enough to think that salvation only comes through sarah. let her go back to alaska and continue to get 80% approval ratings and do a good job, and get reelected in 2010. see what happens then, but i’d bet the image is still a nasty one.

Yes, yes and yes. People don’t seem to get that.
So Sarah got upset at staffers, big deal. She may have misunderstood a prep question about Africa. She may have underestimated the MSM. Good grief, this was her first national campaign. But to trash her in such a fashion like this is disgraceful, and McCain bears responsibility. Especially after his speech last night praising her – he looks like a backstabbing jerk.

I just send a very cheerful email to the McCain campaign….
You trashing Palin? Fine, Once the aides are named I will make my decision on who to vote for in 4 years.

Fox News is going to need Glenn Beck after their ratings tank over this.

Palin must be so pissed off right now.

The incompetent staffers are just trying to save their careers by blaming someone, anyone else.
I hope they spend the rest of their careers asking if someone wants fries with their order.

Get over yourself. I have a soul and thankfully I worship no Tin Jesuses.
You need to take a serious look at yourself and that hero worship syndrome you are tauting. Read some of the comments here – Sarah Palin has become The Right Wing – The One.

Sour grapes from a campaign that didn’t know its a$$ from a hole in the ground. If she was so stupid, how’d she pass the vetting process? This just makes the McCain camp come off looking bad.

Right, exactly.
Look to the “aids” for the probable, likely suspects as to where the clothes went and how.
People squirrel things away for later resell for collectors. So, look to who handled the clothing, who it was was cleaning, storying, caring for them, and there’ll likely be whoever it was who took off with “samples”.

Greta is doing a segment on the “mean” attacks from within the campaign on Palin. Someone better out these mofos real soon.
CanadianGuy on November 5, 2008 at 9:37 PM
Seriously I want Fred Thompson installed NOW as RNC and give him a big size boot to kick some asses there.
The RNC is running scared because they know they screwed up and are trying to cover their tracks.
Fred has the support of conservatives and isnt afraid to start taking the rino garbage out.
