It begins: Palin didn’t know Africa was a continent, claims Fox News

Via Ace, a tasty pile of shinola straight from the stovetop of disgruntled McCain staffers. It’s too cute by half, as is the detail about NAFTA; they might as well have tossed in a story about her having to guess who’s buried in Grant’s tomb. To believe it, you have to believe she figured out a way to become governor of Alaska while somehow lacking the mental power to piece together which three nations might be involved in the North American Free Trade Agreement. Diehard ‘Cuda-haters like Sullivan will, of course, be more than happy to oblige.

You’ll find another clip from Fox that aired earlier today below the Carl Cameron video. See if you can figure out the thematic link. Exit question: If she’s really this much of an abject imbecile, how did that detail manage to escape the attention of Newsweek? There’s no sign of it in their highlight reel of the dishiest dirt they learned about the campaign, a piece which actually includes a quote from another aide about “Wasilla hillbillies looting Neiman Marcus from coast to coast” as if to prove that they’re not holding back on the ‘Cuda.

Update: The plot thickens.

The “Africa not a continent” was most likely just a verbal flub, using the word “country” when “continent” was called for. Perfectly ordinary miscue, doesn’t mean she doesn’t know it. The NAFTA thing was probably unfamiliarity with national issues (which is appropriate for a governor not really affected by it), where she heard an acronym and didn’t immediately parse it. These are ordinary errors anyone could make, like Obama’s “57 states” mistake, or saying he was in Florida when he was in Ohio.

Will somebody explain to me why Republicans are going along with the vicious character assassination? If the party is really full of this sort of thing, I may just have to leave. I know Democrats are full of that sort of filth, but I had hoped that most Republicans were better than that. Perhaps I was naive.

philwynk on November 5, 2008 at 9:00 PM

I don’t buy these accusations.

But in any case, intelligence and knowledge are different. There are intelligent people who focus on a narrow range of interests and are surprisingly ignorant about other areas.

Good judgment matters more than either. Presidents don’t lack information or intelligent advisers. After listening, the trick is making the right decision.

I don’t know how intelligent Truman was, but he showed good judgment when it counted.

I will not speak ill of another republican but I do have have something to say about McCain. He has the vanity of Achilles.

He will have the leisure of admiring his “respectful campaign” in one of his mansions paid for by his wife’s filthy and unpatriotic lucre. We, the other hand, will pay for his “respectful campaign.” But let’s not hope it’s for too long.

Dumping on Palin makes sense for a campaign that came up with the stupidest political trick in recorded history: suspending one’s campaign, handing your opponent the ball to make you look like an idiot, and taking the same action your opponent did. How could you use that to distinguish yourself from your opponent? “I did the same thing only crazier.”

Picking Palin was the one and only right thing McCain did.

This party acts too much like the libs sometimes!
Makes me sick.
To throw her into the lion cage like that and then throw her under the bus after the job she did firing up the base and being herself, a real conservative!

If this can be traced back to Romney people that makes me even more sick but I dont know anyone that has verified that so i will hold my tongue on him.

Palin may not be quite ready yet but she has more balls then 2/3 the people in the Republican party and without a doubt more then the McCain campaign staff!

I made it a point to skip Mr. Know-It-All’s show tonight because I knew what was coming. O’Reilly jumped the shark for me when he proclaimed Al Gore would have easily been elected by a wide margin “had he done The Factor”. I liked O’Reilly before and I just screamed “What!?” And that was many months pre-falafel.

Marcus on November 5, 2008 at 9:02 PM

Like I said before, under the bus goes Palin. Typical Blue blood RINOs do what ever it takes to get media attention. McCain offers the final knife in the back of conservatives. I won’t forget what the weasels in the McCain camp did to Sarah Palin. Any republican nominee who hires the slime who ran his campaign will not have my vote in 2012. Without Palin, McCain would have lost in an even bigger landslide. Is lame campaign was in the toilet before he gave her the nod.

Sean on November 5, 2008 at 9:02 PM

About the clothes. It is my understanding the RNC allowed her to spend the money; so, the issue should be with them first. Second, 5.3 BILLION DOLLARS was spent on this election overall. $150,000 worth of clothes is just a very tiny tip of the iceberg as far as this election goes. I can’t even begin to imagine that kind of excess.

Kamikaze on November 5, 2008 at 8:59 PM

Apparently an anon Republican donor bought the clothes – in different sizes, as they weren’t sure what would fit. When the clothes that didn’t fit were supposed to be collected to be returned, they were no where to be found.

Not a good thing for a reformer.

AprilOrit on November 5, 2008 at 9:02 PM

Some of you will never learn. Infatuation with Palin trumps clear evidence for some of the drones here. Any criticism of Palin’s lack of curiousity or lack of knowledge is somehow seen as disloyalty. Carl Cameron is hardly a liberal reporter with an axe to grind.

Keep acting like she knew what the #$#% she was talking about, see how far that gets us next time around.

JustTruth101 on November 5, 2008 at 9:03 PM

Haunchie on November 5, 2008 at 9:03 PM

I can’t believe Carl Cameron let himself get used by a bunch of pathetic whiners who are desperately trying to deflect the blame for a McCain loss from themselves onto Gov. Palin. I’m glad BOR called Carl out and said that these complaints are petty nonsense. I sincerely doubt Palin is as dumb or bitchy as these former “advisors” say she is. Perhaps if they behaved with class and learned from their mistakes they would benefit far more than slandering the governor. Carl, take a vacation. You need the rest.

Okay, this is bullshit. And no one will defend this woman.

Apparently they fired Randy Scheunemann, the only guy who would. There was an article on abcnews.com earlier today that had a couple of quotes from Palin aides saying they were really worried that McCain’s staffer were going to scapegoat her like this to save themselves.

And this bit about her making her staff cry? I mean we all do things under stress and behind closed doors, but there’s just no even anenctodal evidence from Alaska that she treats her staff that way. Even Monegan, the fired commissioner from Troopergate, wouldn’t go so far as to say she was some kind of horrible, crazy boss. In fact, he’s said that he would work for her again if she asked.

meltenn on November 5, 2008 at 9:03 PM

Will somebody explain to me why Republicans are going along with the vicious character assassination?

I don’t believe the Africa and NAFTA thing. Even Homer Simpson would know that. The people leaking this are McCain operatives who are trying to blame Palin for Maverick’s horrific campaign. Maverick fired the guy who outed the people from within his campaign who smeared Palin. That’s all you need to know about McCain’s involvement in this thing.

Dee2008 on November 5, 2008 at 9:04 PM

To all the Palin Haters: Sarah Palin is not above criticism.

But unfair and unfounded rumors about her clothes, and things she supposedly did and said are absolutely ridiculous. Of course they go with the first female veep candidate saunters into a room full of impotent men wearing only a towel (thus curing them). It couldn’t be that THEY barged in on HER, and she politely excused herself while trying not to make too big a deal about their invasion of her privacy. No, no, of course not. Of course she’s going to use her feminine wiles, in front of her husband, on other men because she strikes me as the real slutty type.

We don’t even know if any of this happened, and Cameron is protected under the whole “my anonymous sources” spiel. I for one am tired of “anonymous sources” being used as a crutch and an excuse to report any bullshit that comes along. Or not report the truthful information that comes along (LAT, I’m looking at you and that incriminating Jew-hating Khalidi tape).

Meanwhile Obama has visited 57 of our 58 states, Biden’s foreign policy expertise recalls when we, with the help of France, drove Hezbollah out of Lebanon, and you’re still criticizing Sarah Palin for a shopping spree that was funded by her party.

battleoflepanto1571 on November 5, 2008 at 9:05 PM

Sarah will be fine.

None of her “errors” in the interviews were long-lasting judgment issues that will haunt her going forward, but rather the pains of inexperience. The inexperience itself isn’t her problem – it’s McCain’s and his staff’s. The memories will fade, and (assuming she’s interested in POTUS) she will study and improve, likely while continuing to do well in Alaska.

Her place on the ticket will be a slight negative in 2012, but her name recognition, ability to draw crowds, and ratings popularity will ensure that she has enough of an audience in talk radio, the blogosphere and television that she’ll get her message out if she wants to. Mark my words – if she sets her sights on 2012 she’ll be a strong contender.

We know after every failed campaign (remember the stories about Hillary’s campaign?) that there’s finger-pointing taking place. People blaming each other, the candidates or something else for the failures.

I’m lost as to how McCain is responsible for one or two staffers trying to blame others for the problems. He can’t control everyone.

Like most stories – and Fox News deserves credit for reporting this and not absurd condemnations – the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Palin wasn’t ready for the big stage (that’s understandable given her background) and also the staff poorly prepped her for the interviews and didn’t handle the details.

This is mostly, for me, a ho-hum story but it does reveal, as we found out, how disorganized the McCain campaign was.

Yeah, and the top of the ticket bears ultimate resonsibility for that.

There are now stories surfacing, one on NewsMax for instance,, of good ol John McCain going back to the Senate as the maverick,, pledging to work with Obama. The Dems are all saying they are counting on his support in the Senate.
Yep,, so ,, I am wondering,, will we see the old McCain we all hate and despise return in full force,, in all his bipartisan style? I am sure all will be forgiven in the media and they will help point the finger at Sarah as long as the Ol Maverick returns.
I seriously had gained some real respect for McCain in the last 5 weeks of this election. I hope I am able to keep that.
I had a fear in McCain winning as well. I feared he would assist in finishing what Bush started,, the destruction of the Republican party.
I say,, lets get it on. Lets let the Marxists arrive in all their power hungry Fascist glory! Let it all transpire once and for all so we can get this thing over with! I am tired of all the half baked new tone half way socialist with a tax break RINO plans. Lets see full blown communism come. Let the riots and thuggery begin!
I liked what Rush said today,,,56,000,000 Americans voted no to Obama! We are not alone! We do not need to be in the majority to save this nation,, we just need to be determined!

I don’t know. I was surprised that Bush came back in 2004 after being brutalized by the Left.

V15J on November 5, 2008 at 9:13 PM

however, the rest of the Republicans either
start to fight back,or keep allowing the MSM
to screw them over and over,

and if thats the case, then purge, rebuild,

because,the MSM will not change!!

canopfor on November 5, 2008 at 9:09 PM

Republicans don’t fight… bush allowed the “Bush lied” crap and “this is the worst economy” crap (before it was bad) without fighting back hard.. he should have been ripping a new one with Pelosi and Reid… he never got tough with the media and the libs… so that led to Bush derangement …. it spilled over here.
I want someone who really names names and won’t take any of this crap!

…said the kid who wanted to vote for Chuck Baldwin.

Comedy gold right there.

capitalist piglet on November 5, 2008 at 9:06 PM

And yeah? Why is that so ironic? Chuck Baldwin, who was endorsed by Ron Paul, is the anti-neocon candidate. A real small government conservative.

Stop indulging in your political views at unsubstantive blogs like LGF.

I’m lost as to how McCain is responsible for one or two staffers trying to blame others for the problems. He can’t control everyone.

Here’s a clue. McCain fired the guy who leaked to Fred Barnes that it was Nicole Wallace and others who were smearing Palin with anonymous leaks to CNN and The Atlantic. That’s how.

CanadianGuy on November 5, 2008 at 9:14 PM

Even the PUMAs complained about our lack of backbone and ability to fight.

beththebaker on November 5, 2008 at 9:14 PM

and yes, i love Palin. but stop kidding ourselves, her future in national politics is done. tina key helped kill it. her unfavorables are insanely high. Higher-than-HILLARY high.

again, how do you come back after getting a bad rep?

****Paint me a picture where Jeb Bush has a future in national politics. not his fault.

just tell me how.

I’ll await your response***

battleoflepanto1571 on November 5, 2008 at 9:14 PM

Is it just me but is loyalty a major problem in Republicans in D.C.? How many “leaks” through out the past years have we gotten from the Bush administration? Then there was McClellan and his stupid book. And now the McCain camp is throwing Palin under the bus. How about some loyalty and trust?

terryannonline on November 5, 2008 at 9:14 PM

The people who handled Sarah Palin had to have been the most incompetent group of political know-nothings I have ever witnessed. Instead of putting her out right after the convention to do a good series of interviews in Republican friendly venues, which would have made sense for a new member to the campaign to get her feet wet in, they hid her from conservative talk shows and interviewers for weeks and instead threw her to the wolves on the left who so obviously were out to get her. Charlie Gibson opened his interview with her by intentionally misquoting her about what she had said regarding the Iraq war being a mission from God. Which she insisted she did not say and he insisted that she had. Video proved Palin right and Gibson wrong.

Palin’s handlers bungled it from day one after the convention, and now they are trying to cover their own asses. Did it ever occur to these idiots that Sarah Palin knew her strengths and weaknesses far better than they and maybe should have listened to her. She had, after all, already won every election she had ever been in using her own skills.

I don’t know how accurate the ‘Diva,’ reports are, but at the risk of being accused of being a blind Sarah supporter, I’d suggest you ask yourself, if you knew that the people responsible for handling your campaign and career were destroying it right before your eyes, wouldn’t you raise a rumpus as well?

There are a dozen reasons why McCain lost this election.. Sarah Palin is not one of them.

Mr A on November 5, 2008 at 9:15 PM

Could Palin be more wonkish, more polished? Sure. This stuff can be acquired with time. I hope we get a chance to look at her progress by 2011. But her actions as governor and during the campaign prove her to be honest, forthright, principled, courageous, and blessed with a natural ability to connect with people. And that´s the stuff you can´t learn. We will see if she is capable of growth in the coming years. But no, we cannot afford to ignore such a talent.

Obama had more than a few embarrassing moments. What he didn´t have was liberal pundits eager to put a knife in his back.

McCain’s is still wondering whether to take off the kid gloves against The Prince Obama, while he had no problem reaming Romney.

Odd.

abinitioadinfinitum on November 5, 2008 at 9:15 PM

let me pose this: paint me a picture where Jeb Bush has a future in national politics. not his fault.

just tell me how.

I’ll await your response, idiot. And don’t call me an idiot, idiot. THe ship has sailed on Palin for a national office.

battleoflepanto1571

Well idiot, Jeb Bush is a better communicator than Dubya for one. Second, you’re assuming that Sarah gives a rat’s ass that the media hates her and that somehow means she can’t run for the WH in four years. Obviously, YOU don’t want her to run now because YOU buy into the media narrative of her and what the RINO’s in the media like Frum and Brooks think of her. Guess what though, people sure as hell would get behind her before they get behind David Brooks.

Haunchie on November 5, 2008 at 9:15 PM

Sounds more like the McCain campaign is trying to deflect blame onto Palin. They obviously made many mistakes the biggest one McCains inept handling of the bailout. They didn’t seem very prepared and would never have even been the nominee were it not for the msm picking him for us. Good riddance.

Palin/Romney 2012!

ctmom on November 5, 2008 at 9:15 PM

Apparently an anon Republican donor bought the clothes – in different sizes, as they weren’t sure what would fit. When the clothes that didn’t fit were supposed to be collected to be returned, they were no where to be found.

Not a good thing for a reformer.

AprilOrit on November 5, 2008 at 9:02 PM

This one is nothing more than a long line of rumors that begins and ends nowhere.

Kamikaze on November 5, 2008 at 9:15 PM

The way Sarah handles this is to go high profile. Go out and speak around. Get her on Hannitty or Rush or Laura Ingraham and let her shoot down the idiots who are attacking her.

William Amos on November 5, 2008 at 9:16 PM

I read in more than one place that it was the Romney people in McCains camp that is pissed that he wasn’t pick and they were behind all the crap.

McCain never trusted Romney. He could have come in handy as VP runner when the market crashed and probably would have told McCain not to YES the bailout package. But Romney would ultimately have usurped McCain, something that Sarah wouldn’t. Romney is very smart, very rich, but a PRICK.

Sarah will be coronated in 2012. She needs to mature and transform and she will.

gracie on November 5, 2008 at 9:16 PM

Sen.McCain to you and your pomas ass jerks staff. Gov. Palin was the only thing that kept you run alive. The nerve of you leting your staff treat her like dirt is sad.No sir she is not part of the D.C. wine & chesse elite she is just plain folk thank God for that.So what if shops at walmart buys second hand clothes drive her own used car serves her family hambugar helper so do alot of american.Carl Cramron just talked about it on fox.She and her husband work for a living she changes dirty diapers also and she did not marry into money.Sen. McCain fired the guy who leaked to Fred Barnes that it was Nicole Wallace and others who were smearing Palin with anonymous leaks to CNN and The Atlantic. That’s how.

Yes, because the leaks were false. Wallace wasn’t the one leaking about the dresses/clothes.

Fred Barnes admitted later that his source was wrong. Wallace was being falsely accused.

Since Fox isn’t “conservative” is there any big media mogul types with enough moxie and loot to start another network/newspaper that leans way right with no apologies?

Since O is all about Fairness he needs to pass a law that all tv stations need to show in the bottom corner their political bias…I’ll leave it in your capable snort worthy hands to come up with the initials.
