One possibility – “Civilian National Security Force” could take on the US Military. Hitler used the military to assassinate the leaders of the SA brownshirts. Night of the Long Knives – 30 June 1934. It’s hard to fathom anything like that happening here. When I first heard Obama speak at the Democratic National Convention in 2004, something ran up my leg – and it was fear not thrill. I knew then he was not to be trusted. O’Reilly talked about what the “Civilian National Security Force” was with Juan Williams and Mary Katharine Ham last night. These three did not know what Obama meant by this.

Clean coal is, so far, an unrealized possibility. So while we wait for clean coal to become a reality, Obama (if allowed) will tax the INDUSTRY into bankruptcy.

One wonders how rywall sleeps at night.

If coal plants are too expensive to operate, then utilities stop building them. If fewer coal plants, then fewer orders for coal. If fewer orders, then coal mining companies lay off workers. And so it goes…

New technologies are wonderful things, and we have a bright future because of them; but it takes 35 to 50 years for a new technology to produce a significant percentage of the nation’s power, and that’s true after the technology is beyond the research stage. DEA says wind power could produce 20% of the nation’s electric power by 2030, with proper incentives. That’s 50 years after the first pilot wind farms. Nuclear power reached about 20% of the nation’s electric power a mere 27 years after the first pilot nuclear plant, but that was after the Manhattan project had generated a knowledge base about nuclear radiation.

Any plan that deliberately raises the price of essential energy based on the promise of some technology on the drawing board is a sure prescription for economic disaster. The reason “we” don’t rely on alternatives today is not some conspiracy, nor some failure to invest, but the simple fact that fossil fuels remain by far the cheapest, most readily available means to drive an economy. The nation’s businesses are not stupid; they will make the transition as soon as it makes economic sense.

This has been the Democrats’ plan for decades. They say out loud that they intend to drive oil, natural gas, and coal prices up in order to create artificial incentives for “renewable” energy sources.

How is it that the American public does not have in its mind “Democrat = drive energy costs through the roof?”

If you ever needed to see evidence of the Republican party’s utter failure to differentiate themselves from their opponents, there it is.

There is no need for artificial incentives. When fossil fuels are genuinely scarce, and when alternatives have developed to the point that they’re economically sensible, the alternatives will be cheap enough to produce the switch without driving prices through the roof. The reason they haven’t already is that there’s no real shortage of fossil fuels, and the alternatives simply are not ready.

Ed, this is why I visit Hot Air: you and AP are sincere, honest, principled, and stand-up. Forgive the sappiness, but we visitors have been fortunate to walk down this election road with the two of you as our guides.

Well said, I thank you Ed and AP. Without you and HA and the great commenters here, I would be thoroughly depressed.

It blinds him to such things as the long term effects of economic policy. I don’t think he even cares.

For instance, raising taxes on big business is just going to result in higher prices for consumers. Taxes are another cost of production and costs are passed onto the consumer, especially when every company is subject to the same increase. We saw this recently when the price of fuel went up – so did the price of virtually everything.

So who’s affected most by a rise in consumer prices? First and foremost: the poor, whose weekly budgets are stretched enough as it is. Secondly, small businesses are affected, because when the prices of mass produced essentials rise, people start to rethink their weekly budgets and edge out the kind of goods and services that small businesses typically provide. They generally sell the things that people they can “do without” should the price of groceries rise, etc.

McCain doesn’t know a lot about economics but at least he knows enough to figure that you don’t raise anybody’s taxes during a recession.

Obama talks about all these issues as if he is a young professor with very little world experience. Hmm.

The tragedy is, Hannity lets him get away with it far too ofter. How many times have you seen Colmes get the last word? Hannity deserves a slap too, for being so lame at debating.
