Video: Hannity hails HA, Michelle on coal story
posted at 7:40 am on November 4, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, Alan Colmes, and Pat Caddell discussed Barack Obama’s comments on coal from his January 2008 interview with the San Francisco Chronicle two nights ago. We get a nice mention from Hannity as his panel marvel at the fact that his remarks about forcing electricity prices to “skyrocket” never got highlighted by the Chronicle:
As always, we can expect Colmes to provide the spin, claiming that McCain has the “same” cap-and-trade system, which they do not. Colmes also tries to claim that Obama wouldn’t bankrupt coal-plant providers after we heard Obama say explicitly that he would. Not even Obama would describe his cap-and-trade system as the same as McCain’s, and in fact McCain encourages exploration and increased domestic production on the front end of all current energy sources as a means to pay for the R&D for future energy sources.
I love Caddell’s response, though, to Colmes’ spin. “I believe you, Alan, but didn’t Obama just say it himself?”
Just for the record: YouTube’s Naked Emperor News should get the credit for this find, at least for the “bankrupt” quote. We added the “skyrocket” quote to that, but we wouldn’t have known to look without the first video produced by NEN.

Hannity and some others like Rush and Mark Levin, really need to worry if B Hussein Obama wins. The Obama Administration with the full power of the Executive Branch will crush all opposition. And I’m not just talking about the Fairness Doctrine.

Exactly.

Don’t we have more coal than anyone on the planet – by far? How could people vote for someone who will regulate energy to the point that our Electric Bills will skyrocket???

Get your friends and family off their coaches and out of their cubicles to go vote for John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Agreed, the de facto ‘Fairness Doctrine’, will be reconfigured so as to be nearly irreversible. And it will be just the start of it.
Not sure how, but I fully expect them to make life difficult for FNC. And the conservative blogoshpere. Probably also they’ll find ways to subsidize their MSM, and groups like Media Matters, like they subsidized ACORN.
Surviving the oppression of the Socialist Triumvirate, Obama-Reid-Pelosi, is not going to be easy

Read the entire interview.
Read the actual sentences that came out of Obama’s mouth.
The coal “story” is a non-story.
Obama never said he would bankrupt anything.
Shrieky outrage at cherrypicked comments taken out of context does not a delicious game-changing scandal make.
You’re all out of time. It’s over.

Alan Colmes mouthed off at one point on how this interview was on the SF Chronicle’s website since January.
Yeah, Colmes, it was BURIED somewhere on the site in a way that you wouldn’t know it was there unless you dug really deep to find it.

#1. How did this story get “buried” or missed? Other than the sad fact that this came from the Bay Area, (where 90% of the electorate are far left liberals who would not be inclined to repeat or report this story), the impact would have been greater if this was reported at least a week ago.
Other than Fox reporting this yesterday, the national media is not, (and will not) report this.
#2. If this is the “strategy” Barack Obama plans to use in his administration, (if elected), to implement environmental policy, are we to expect other punitive business busting proceedures that will further cripple our already fragile economy?
#3.
Ifwhen we all get out and vote in mass today #2 becomes moot.Rovin on November 4, 2008 at 8:06 AM
Yes, the Civilian National Security Force.
Reminds me of the old Monty Python sketch where a thinly-veiled Nazi was running for prime minister, and they had man-on-the-street interviews of people expressing doubt and apprehension:
“I don’t know if I like his talk about Boncentration Bamps.”
jeff_from_mpls on November 4, 2008 at 8:06 AM
If the unthinkable becomes reality, Americans who know that freedom is worth defending will need to move quietly and keep in the shadows simply because Obama’s brownshirts will be out and watching. He will direct the FBI and CIA to gather information on any opposition while he works to dismantle the First & Second Amendments. No doubt liberals, RINO’s and pseudo-patriots will support this under the heading of “law and order” while they call for calm and demand we work within the political framework. Thirty-six years ago I swore to defend the constitution. I never defined that oath to mean: “as long as it’s convenient”.
I will not apologize for my passion and I will not submit.

But what should we expect of those sentient products of our learning and our welfare institutions?

1985:
“Our plan will also mean an historic correction of a problem we’ve let go on too long — the increasing tax burden on low- and fixed-income Americans that’s been knocking the bottom rungs off the ladder of opportunity. A compassionate, profamily opportunity society should give a break as well to those Americans struggling to get by and move up. And that’s exactly what we intend to do.
By hiking the earned income tax credit, indexing it for inflation, and practically doubling the personal exemption, we can make sure that the working families do not suffer under the burden of Federal taxation. Giving a leg up to those struggling to move up is what America is all about. And that’s a top priority of our tax proposal”
Hmmmm – which dirty socialist said this and enacted the Earned Income Tax Credit, through which people who have paid no taxes at all can still get free money from the government come tax time?

Obama never said he would bankrupt the coal industry. He said that new plant built without new greener technology would most likely not be viable because they would be on the hook for the massive amounts of greenhouse gases they produced. He also said it’s imperative to develop cleaner coal technology.
That’s hardly saying the entire coal industry would be bankrupted, dumba*s.
Dave Rywall on November 4, 2008 at 8:53 AM
Obama’s cult and his other liberals followers have much in common with the Jonestown crowd. They were/are all true believers. Liberalism is a religion and fanaticism is an integral part of that religion. At Jonestown the “Kool Aid” was literal; in this election it is virtual, but just as potent.

It’s interesting how it is that every single statement made by Obama on tape requires an Obama supporter to later interpret and restate into another statement, despite the original being on tape and heard in the real as it was made, when it meant something else versus the later interpretation by his supporters.
Dave, we all heard Obama say what he said. He said — and his words could be heard with a noticable degree of enjoyment relish by the speaker — that coal plants would be bankrupted (the IMPLICATION is/was that they would suffer and perish if not doing what he was coercing them to do otherwise, the coercive factor being do what he ‘commands’ or else).
Everyone here understands English, Dave. Perhaps it’s Obama who does not, at least not a language he hasn’t written in the air himself.

What Caddell says which is right on is how Obama just throws out terms like “bankrupt” and “skyrocket” without concern for the impact of these terms. Bankruptcy is very painful ask anyone who has gone through it. It is not something that you wish on ANY industry. As far as skyrocketing energy prices, we just went through that with oil this Summer.
Obama talks about all these issues as if he is a young professor with very little world experience. Hmm.
Angry Dumbo on November 4, 2008 at 9:52 AM
Obama sees the economy as a stage on which to perform morality plays about “greed” and “sharing.”
It blinds him to such things as the long term effects of economic policy. I don’t think he even cares.
For instance, raising taxes on big business is just going to result in higher prices for consumers. Taxes are another cost of production and costs are passed onto the consumer, especially when every company is subject to the same increase. We saw this recently when the price of fuel went up – so did the price of virtually everything.
So who’s affected most by a rise in consumer prices? First and foremost: the poor, whose weekly budgets are stretched enough as it is. Secondly, small businesses are affected, because when the prices of mass produced essentials rise, people start to rethink their weekly budgets and edge out the kind of goods and services that small businesses typically provide. They generally sell the things that people they can “do without” should the price of groceries rise, etc.
McCain doesn’t know a lot about economics but at least he knows enough to figure that you don’t raise anybody’s taxes during a recession.

On Rywall’s semantic distinction between “bankrupt a coal company” and “bankrupt the coal industry”:
Clean coal is, so far, an unrealized possibility. So while we wait for clean coal to become a reality, Obama (if allowed) will tax the INDUSTRY into bankruptcy.

Well said, I thank you Ed and AP. Without you and HA and the great commenters here, I would be thoroughly depressed.

Ms. Coulter makes the point that I can’t fathom:
This has been the Democrats’ plan for decades. They say out loud that they intend to drive oil, natural gas, and coal prices up in order to create artificial incentives for “renewable” energy sources.
How is it that the American public does not have in its mind “Democrat = drive energy costs through the roof?”
If you ever needed to see evidence of the Republican party’s utter failure to differentiate themselves from their opponents, there it is.
There is no need for artificial incentives. When fossil fuels are genuinely scarce, and when alternatives have developed to the point that they’re economically sensible, the alternatives will be cheap enough to produce the switch without driving prices through the roof. The reason they haven’t already is that there’s no real shortage of fossil fuels, and the alternatives simply are not ready.

One wonders how rywall sleeps at night.
If coal plants are too expensive to operate, then utilities stop building them. If fewer coal plants, then fewer orders for coal. If fewer orders, then coal mining companies lay off workers. And so it goes…
New technologies are wonderful things, and we have a bright future because of them; but it takes 35 to 50 years for a new technology to produce a significant percentage of the nation’s power, and that’s true after the technology is beyond the research stage. DEA says wind power could produce 20% of the nation’s electric power by 2030, with proper incentives. That’s 50 years after the first pilot wind farms. Nuclear power reached about 20% of the nation’s electric power a mere 27 years after the first pilot nuclear plant, but that was after the Manhattan project had generated a knowledge base about nuclear radiation.
Any plan that deliberately raises the price of essential energy based on the promise of some technology on the drawing board is a sure prescription for economic disaster. The reason “we” don’t rely on alternatives today is not some conspiracy, nor some failure to invest, but the simple fact that fossil fuels remain by far the cheapest, most readily available means to drive an economy. The nation’s businesses are not stupid; they will make the transition as soon as it makes economic sense.

One possibility – “Civilian National Security Force” could take on the US Military. Hitler used the military to assassinate the leaders of the SA brownshirts. Night of the Long Knives – 30 June 1934. It’s hard to fathom anything like that happening here. When I first heard Obama speak at the Democratic National Convention in 2004, something ran up my leg – and it was fear not thrill. I knew then he was not to be trusted. O’Reilly talked about what the “Civilian National Security Force” was with Juan Williams and Mary Katharine Ham last night. These three did not know what Obama meant by this.

When is someone going to slap Alan and make him cry? Hurry, please. I have never seen such an apologist. The man has no shame.

Hi Sweetness:
I hope your assessment is of Obama’s “Civilian National Security Force” is incorrect. After hearing this force was to be as strong as our military the hairs on the back of my neck stood up.
This didn’t sound like the ol’ peace corps we know. Appreciate you providing the link.
I’m just wondering why O’Reilly, Ham or Williams couldn’t or wouldn’t draw that connection?
Cheers

“Bankrupt” and “Skyrocket” need to play non-stop in PA, WV, OH, and CO (and any other Coal producing state). Let Nobama’s own words come back to bite him in the butt.
I wonder if there is buyer’s remorse from those who did the early voting?

Alan Colmes is such a little worm… I actually sometimes have a very small sense of sympathathy for the little sickly feller…
Another thing I truly feel(and I hope)is that the huge voter turnout is not exactly what the common belief is that it’s a large movement for “CHANGE” BHO is pushing.. Quite the contrary… it’s a huge movement against the scary SOB and what he’ll bring..
Dakotobol on November 4, 2008 at 1:31 PM
DryWall,
You little worm. I have been reading your studid A$$ moments for a while. It is people like you keeping me up at night worrying about the fate of our country. Every time I close my eyes all I see is a bunch of lemmings running for the cliff, jumping off with complete abandon. I bet you’ve already been checking out how to become a green shirt in the Civil National Security Force. Oh, you sound just like the kind of sheeple Big O will be looking for to rat out neighbors and family members for turning their thermostats to low or driving an SUV. You are pathetic.

that the words bankrupt and skyrocketing prices come out of the mouth of a politician/legislator, when taking about the effects of his energy plan, should give any ignorant masses pause. the words should inspire outrage, if Amis were not medicating away their natural emotional “disorders”.
congrats to HA, for breaking the story (sorta). It’s why I’ve chosen to be here.

After taking care of business this morning, I am about to go vote. It is a right and responsibility I do not take lightly. Being a longtime fan of HotAir, it is a priviledge to be able to post here. I can’t wait for Michelle to open her registration up again. I am so pumped I can’t stand it.
This fight is far from over. Drywall did not succeed on his mission to berate and discourage me.
Besides, as my high school latin teacher had on her wall “Illegitimi Non Carborundum”.
Figure that one out, Troll of great intellect.
God Bless America! McCain/Palin ’08!
