Schumer on the Fairness Doctrine: Just think of it as regulating pornography

He’s making a general point about government’s responsibility to oversee the public airwaves. If you’re willing to concede that they have the power and duty to keep one type of material off the air in the interest of the common good, then at least theoretically you’re willing to extend that principle to other types — like, say, political speech, to ensure “balance.”
This clip’s an even better turnout motivator than the Ayers clip, isn’t it?
At least he’s only talking only about the public airwaves, not cable or the Internet. I think.

Indeed Jonah Goldberg had it right… The rise of Liberal Fascism is coming. This is truly the evolution of how the left obtains total control of power. No need for political prisoners or complete oppression like we saw with Lenin, Mao, Castro and all the others. No need to nationalize TV stations and oil companies by force as Hugo Chavez has done. With a liberal supermajority in congress, everything will be done “for the good” i.e Global Warming, Political Fairness, Healthcare, Economic Justice, and on and on and on.

The Fairness Doctrine is a bad idea. The airwaves, though, are different than printed material, cable or the Internet. Private companies don’t own the airwaves, rather they get an exclusive license from the government. If the license contains onerous terms from the government (e.g., limited speech) then private companies and their audience might continue their flight away from public airwaves to alternative media.

Schumer like all committed liberals live and die by the absolute adherence to their bible of moral relativity. This false scripture taken from the book of secular humanism mandates political correctness supplement the will of the people by eliminating the need for majority rule. The practitioners of this elitist dogma are fascistic in their approach to all who see through this scheme to amass power and dare question them. If Obama wins and the likes of Schumer, Pelosi, Frank, and Kerry solidify their control of our freedoms the clouds of revolution will gather on the horizon as the seeds of sedition are sown.

Does Schumer even realize what an idiot he must seem and isn’t it absolutely flabbergasting how such people are ever elected and put in such high positions of power?
Schumer equates political opinions he disagrees with to offensive, sexual pornography….and then he expects this equation to NOT face ridicule and actually meet agreement somewhere. Please help me understand how our country devolved to the level where THIS is an actual argument for curtailing free speech.

this extremism is a typical aspect of the boomer animal. from their exchange with Bush over the last eight, it should be very clear that bipartisanship is not in the cards. they want to play the game the way they want it and Now.
It may seem crass and absurd, but it is not a joke and it is not a fringe movement. The boomers actually think this way. It’s no way to govern and it’s no way to structure a society. They are strychnine in our communal well.

Schumer’s a fool with shallow ‘moral equivalence’ argument. Especially when ‘political speech’ is one of the foundational principles which the First Amendment sought to protect.
I’m pretty sure porn ain’t mentioned in any of the Federalist papers or the tomb ‘Two Treatise on Civil Govt.’
The whole point of these negative liberties (right O-Man?) was freedom of public discourse, not prurient interests.
That nonsense wasn’t pursued till much later in the twentieth century, but even now, narrow categories are drawn by the court to regulate ‘obscene’ speech, pictures or actions.
Those pursuits are totally distinct from free enterprise & public discourse as it relates to citizens and their government which is what these Leftist numb skulls really want to regulate.
Schumer’s a tool.

Ask him how this will effect NPR? CBS? PBS? MSNBC? For some reason only conservative radio need to be closed down. I wonder why? And make no mistake, the Fairness Doctrine has nothing to do with fairness. It has to do with turning AM radio back into playing the top 40 pop hits. No station management can afford to have every point of view represented on every topic and expect to produce a popular show.

Exactly Fred!
How can anyone look at their argument and say, “yea, that makes sense and sounds fair”. Even if one is a die-hard lib, they would have to understand how completely anti-free speech such a law would be….and THEN to say it wouldn’t apply to out-of-the-closet-as-marxist MSM is beyond comprehension.
I guess Shumer et-al believe the other side is as clueless as their own base.
I don’t see how this doctrine would withstand a Supreme Court challenge, and if it did how the populace would let it stand without some sort of revolt against it.
Would we have Rush REALLY broacasting from an “undisclosed location” as a sort of radio free America.

I am, and have always been a supporter of the 2nd Amend. I have and have always had many weapons. This idea that the Dems and Libs are going to send stormtroopers to our homes and take our guns is really myth.
Barry O, the Dems, the UN and all Anti-Gun Groups will just Legislate the guns and ammo out of our hands. Many gun owners will just not want to be a felon. (or pay the massive taxs on ammo and licenses) Many gun owners just dont have the stomach to keep weapons illegally.
They will inact laws that make gun ownership and self defense illegal. I encourage the purchase of weapons but in the near future it won’t matter much. Look into how things happend in the UK, Aust and Canada. Its on its way.

I didn’t purchase my Glock because of gun grabbers.
The Dems are going to slap huge excise taxes on handguns and will open up the manufacturers to lawsuits. In a year or two, the Glock I bought Sunday for $589 might run $2,000 or more.
And the hundred rounds I bought will skyrocket too, agree.
So if I decide I don’t want it, I can sell it for more than I paid for it.
I don’t care if the Democrats do make self-defense illegal. I have a family to protect and that outweighs laws made by idiots. Unless they take away the right to a jury, I’ll get off anyway if I’m defending my family.
And finally, if the gun grabbers do come around? Things get lost. And hid. And dug up when they’re needed.

I still believe the way to revolt against the USA going marxist/socialist/communist is for people to organize, stock up on essentials, and stage a widespread, general strike and then take to the streets by the millions until the hierarchy steps down.
You haven’t seen financial crisis or economic collapse until the REAL hard working Americans stop supporting a nation’s direction…..i.e. conservatives.

“Bersa Thunder Ultra Compact 9MM for me, 13 in the magazine, and 17 if I can get some full size mags before AWB 2 shows up.”
I considered the 9mm but I like the stopping power of the .45.
The bullets weigh a good ounce each.
The Glock is surprisingly easy to dismantle and oil, just followed the manufacturers direction. It’s ready to go.
I am going to take a class though. I live right near the NRA National Headquarters so they offer plenty around here and they also have a range I can use for $10 an hour.

A rifle (I think you might want to get more specific)when you say rifle that encompasses many many calibers.
Hollow point .45 rounds have no stopping power?
americaslaststand on November 4, 2008 at 2:43 PM
For all intents and purposes, no. Any rounds in the head will kill, but for a pistol, you normally have a choice between a mushrooming hollow point or a strong FMJ. With a rifle, the round is designed to splinter and shatter, making hits on vital areas more possible. This is in addition to the fact that most standard AR-type rifles, like the AR-15, M4, and AK-47 have 30 rounds in a magazine as opposed to a pistol which averages 10-15.
MadisonConservative on November 4, 2008 at 2:46 PM
As usual, Schumer spends a lot of time spewing nonsense that is thinly disguised as a logical argument.
Pornography is kept off the air in the public interest. There is no reason to limit political speech in the public interest. It is an apples and oranges comparison and is used only to stake a position that demonizes the political speech of the right. Just more examples of the Saul Alinsky playbook here.
Hawthorne on November 4, 2008 at 2:51 PM
The big problem is trying to fit an AR-15 into my IWB holster LOL.
.45 is a man stopper, and headshots are rare, rounds on target, center mass, you will be stopped. That is the Rule, the exception is you are jacked up on PCP, or you are a Terminator and all 8 rounds I riddle your torso with damaging every vital organ make you hesitate but keep coming.
americaslaststand on November 4, 2008 at 2:51 PM
I’m going to play Bioshock for the same reason, though Team America would be very tempting if I had it. I’m looking forward to the new South Park tomorrow. The plot line has to do with the new president elect breaking into the White House the day after the election and picking his Cabinet.
I’m half hoping it’ll be a joke on Obama but also half hoping they aren’t giving him the election in the episode.
Esthier on November 4, 2008 at 2:54 PM
Heh, fair first point.
As to the exception being on PCP, adrenalin is also a serious charge. Many a time that a cop thought a perp was on angel dust, it was later found that they weren’t, and the consensus is that more often than not they were simply so keyed up that their adrenalin kept them going.
Note that I’m not suggesting that a pistol is useless in self defense, but a rifle will get you far better results in damn near any fight.
MadisonConservative on November 4, 2008 at 2:55 PM

My fiancee loved Bioshock, but I can’t get into it at all. Hell, if you’re into gaming, you need to pick up Fallout 3 tonight.

MadisonConservative on November 4, 2008 at 2:58 PM
I know what you are saying, and I think we are really on the same page.
The only problem is, it is harder and more intimidating for everyday folk to purchase, train and operate a weapon like an M4, Mp5, Ar-15, especially in Urban areas.
The adrenaline example is a good one yet, many Law Enforcement do not allow the officers to carry .45 sidearms. 9mm is the standard and I do think that 9mm is more likely to go through a person as opposed to dropping them like a sack of rice.
americaslaststand on November 4, 2008 at 3:01 PM
INVESTIGATE HIM. See if he’s shorting communications and radio stocks. This guy loves to sabotage industries.
marklmail on November 4, 2008 at 3:01 PM
FMJs, yes. 9MM hollow points will stick around just as well as 45s. I might also make the argument that typically you’ll get more 9MM rounds in the same size mag, which gives you more chances to hit and more places to choose from.
We are on the same page, though. I wish people weren’t intimidated by weapons, but Hollywood ain’t going away, and people continue to love action films. It ingrains in them the images of destruction and violence, and so when they enter that gun store, they’re filled with fear. That fear needs to be replaced with respect.
MadisonConservative on November 4, 2008 at 3:06 PM

I hadn’t thought of them writing two different ones. You’re probably right. Either that or maybe they did the entire episode without showing the president.
They haven’t taken on either candidate yet, so either way I’m looking forward to it.
Esthier on November 4, 2008 at 3:09 PM
Worth every penny. If you like it, also get Oblivion. Each of those games are guaranteed 30-50+ hours of play, and you’ll probably play them more than once.

I hope I speak for the majority of the American People when I say this, and if I don’t, then really, all hope is lost, but if Dems want to kill the First Ammendment, the only recourse that the citizenry will have to such is a massive demonstration of the true nature and power of The Second.

However, when I am asked a question I do generally try to answer it.

It’s unfortunate how the laws are made by people who don’t ever have to enforce them and who live in gated communities secured by armed security guards.

We have been joined this “MORNING IN AMERICA” by PUMA’s, Reagan Democrates, RHINO’s, Conservatives, peoples of all faiths, of all social backgrounds, of ALL races, arm in arm, shoulder to shoulder, clinging to our God, our Guns, our Flag, our Constitution!
We are looking up at a huge mountain, with a fortress of the far left radicals inside awaiting our attack. The Socilialists, protected all the way up the hill by the MSM, and with Pundits blocking our paths, the task is daunting and will require all of the effort a human can muster!
But we are bolstered by our faith, comforted by that still small voice inside… Fortified by the knowledge that from our efforts here today our children and thiers will grow up in a FREE, PROUD, STRONG AMERICA… The America of our Founders, of our Grandfathers and Fathers, of our FALLEN HEROS who gave it all for our RIGHT TO FIGHT TODAY!
Drawing comfort from our friends, family, church and our mission we march onward, “RUSH”ing up the hill, tossing aside all the Pundits, embarrasing the MSM, confronting the radicals and leaving them wondering what hit them…
VICTORY AWAITS for all those willing to lay it all on the line today! Are you ready? Will you fight? Will you vote?
LET’s ROLL!

“If I were President, I would deputize the entire NRA.
Then they would have to seize their own guns…. not.”
That’s the whole problem.
Who’s going to man Obama’s “Civilian Defense Force”?
Precisely the sort of people who precipitated the phrase “good enough for government work”.
The few of them who bother to show up for work in the morning, will deem that to be more than enough for a day’s pay.
What will save us is that Obama’s Red Guards will be unmotivated, uncontrollable losers, much like the majority of his voters.

Can’t take your word on that. Have to do a routine inspection. Should be done in a half hour.

Maybe Kwame Kilpatrick’s ex-security force can fill the positions.

So you don’t trust that I’m not dangerous and still want to check me out?
You’re right. I’m completely worth it.

Knock it off you nut case, you have posted this on every blog and post.
Turn off the caps and the bold, but most of all, quit “xeroxing” your comment that was clever and now is annoying.
