Open thread: The official freaky deaky exit poll freakout post; Update: FL, IN, OH too close to call? Update: Black vote only 13%?

posted at 4:40 pm on November 4, 2008 by Allahpundit

The polling firm’s sequestration ends promptly at five so the data should follow soon after. Here’s a thread for obsessing when it does. I’m being cute with the headline, for the record: There’s no need to freak out, as righties, lefties, and even your resident Eeyore agree that the data will oversample Democrats and distort what’s really happening on the ground. What could warrant some freakage is if it shows either a gigantic lead for Obama or a surprisingly small one. I’m expecting something on the order of seven points, although that’s based on nothing more than gut.

Geraghty notes that a strong showing for McCain here shouldn’t be taken too seriously either as it wouldn’t account for early voting, but the LA Times piece I linked up top claims that the polling firm’s been doing surveys to try to incorporate that data so some of it, at least, will be baked in the cake.

Stand by for updates once the poll is out.

Update: Did I seven points? Make it 10.

Update: Geraghty’s transcribing the data from Fox News TV and there’s already good news: New voters are only 10 percent of the electorate, a point less than they were four years ago. The bad news? They’re breaking much more heavily for The One — two to one on average in the the swing states mentioned — than they did for Kerry, who beat Bush 53/46.

More good news: McCain leads by 11 among late deciders Virginia and by 19 among white men in Ohio. And remember, those numbers are deflated by the exit poll skew.

Update: Drudge says Obama leads “big” without offering a number but Gawker has amazingly thin state margins in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida, and Ohio.

Update: Now Drudge says Obama by 15 in Pennsylvania, directly contradicting Gawker. Let the exit poll chaos begin!

Update: It’s 6:15 and still no new data. But Drudge has this:

EXIT POLLS CLAIM ‘OBAMA +15′ IN PA… DEVELOPING…
TOO CLOSE TO CALL AT CLOSE: FL, IN, OH…
MCCAIN KEEPING AZ… DEVELOPING…

Realistically, that’s the best news you could hope for. McCain still needs Pennsylvania to win in almost any scenario, but if the blue-leaning exits are that close in that many swing states, he’s got a shot.

Update (Ed): Mid-day exit polling will skew heavily to the Democrats. We saw that in 2004, when everyone panicked after they showed Kerry winning by wide margins.  ABC reports that the black vote only slightly increased from 2004 and will only be 13% of the total vote — lower than most people predicted.  Most of the predictions hit around 16%.  That may be a huge problem for Obama, if the final numbers bear that out.  In 2004, it was 11% of the vote, and went 88% to Kerry.

Blowback

so as conservatives who do we lay blame for this?

time2taketheglovesoffGOP on November 4, 2008 at 10:52 PM

Teachers (not you specifically, if there are any of you here) .. we’ve just witnessed what happens when you live in a country full of people who just don’t understand economic or social policy.

I’m continually stunned by how absolutely rock-stupid most people are .. truly.

Affirmative action is gone…let’s rejoice that…I got told that I could have been an officer in the military if I was a minority since I missed my test scores by one point…

cappy718 on November 4, 2008 at 10:54 PM

I figure we’ll all get GREAT healthcare now just like the O has and Hiden Biden..heck guys can get hair plugs too! HA! Maybe I can get a job as an instructor for the New Civilian Military that the O will create. He did say that they will be just as strong as the ‘regular’ military right? This is such a fiasco…I am coming to believe I’m now a minority but will pay for all of the programs that the low life do-nothings will get. What’s with that anyway?

I am worried for the whole world – not just America

But maybe Obama’s ambition will lead him to stay a bit centrist – to be able to win next time ? If he goes too far left, he risks bad results for Congress in 2 years’ time ?

BBC is saying that John McCain is about to speak. Concession ? Or just a holding statement ?

If VA has gone, as well as PA (and maybe even Florida ?) – it is all over now ?

That’s right, Warren Buffet and Bill Gates support Obama but don’t understand economic policy.

They know nothing of economics, Obama could have said that 2+2=5 and they would believe it.

Well, not everyone is a genius like you and understands that a massive tax cut for large corporations will lead to an incredible ‘trickle down’ effect and create job growth. Some fools, like Warren Buffet, contend that corporations don’t decide to expend because of the tax code. Instead, decisions are driven by consumer demand.

But thanks for sharing your broad expertise in the type of supply side economics that created the Bush ‘economic miracle’.

time2taketheglovesoffGOP on November 4, 2008 at 11:17 PM

Britain moved beyond socialism when it chucked out the Callaghan government in 1979 and elected the untried, almost unknown Maggie Thatcher. We had seen our country in hock to the unions, massive unemployment, begging-bowl out to the International Monetary Fund.

A 40-year flirtation with all-embracing socialism was over. Maggie rolled the state ownership back, restored a lot of national faith.

Blair mostly continued the Thatcher policies – at home and abroad.

I don’t believe the good sense of the American people will tolerate much of the socialism that Obama really stands for. He has been given a clear run by the media (here as well as your side of the pond), has run a very efficient campaign, has fooled millions to believe he is a moderate, is bi-partisan. Plus playing the racist card at every turn

Now the crap finally hits the fan. The image will have to turn into hard reality.

I don’t sense that America will stomach much of what he portends. Look on him as a kinda Jimmy Carter ?

And next time round the racist card won’t work. The media will have to try to dress up a likely failure, rather than an empty suit a mirror to people’s hopes and dreams.

Meanwhile – good luck America. The whole damn world needs you far more than it admits.

Time for a malt Scotch, methinks.

HitNRun on November 4, 2008 at 11:29 PM

Yeah, the same Buffett who just can explain how he didn’t see the Freddie May / Fannie Mac event before it happened. As he said it just took him buy surprise.

The accounting irregularities at those firms didn’t lead to their failure. It was the collapse of the secondary mortgage markets and broad failure of subprime loans that lead to their insolvency. You might educate yourself beyond listening to nonsense from Rush.

It was Buffet, and to some extent only Buffet, who foresaw the future of deriviates as instruments of financial mass descruction. If the derivatives market had been effectively regulated, this entire economic calamity might have been avoided. Buffet is the greatest investor and capitalist of all time. You’re not in a position to criticize the types of achivements that no one else has even come close to attaining. In fact, you’re starting to sound anit-capitalist for attacking him.

Tired of the Lunsford/Mcconnell ads in your mailbox and on the tv yet? I know I am.

Couldn’t even watch the Cat’s exhibition without “HATES VETERANS” every 5 minutes.

adnausium…gag. Glad it’s over. There was no clear choice here in KY. Either you had a gazillionaire crook or a political pork barrel crook..either way it was a no win situation. I chose McConnell just so that there wasn’t another Dem railroading the Senate. It was a sad day in conservative-town.
