Open thread: Dixville Notch goes to the polls

posted at 12:01 am on November 4, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

It’s not at all predictive and it only involves 20 people, but it’s tradition.  Dixville Notch goes to the polls at midnight:

Dixville Notch, a village in New Hampshire’s northeast corner, will begin voting at the stroke of 12 a.m. ET Tuesday, and the ballots won’t take long to tally: Dixville Notch only has about 20 registered voters.

The town, home to around 75 residents, has opened its polls shortly after midnight each Election Day since 1960, drawing national media attention for being the first place in the country to make its presidential preferences known.

But since 1996, another small New Hampshire town, Hart’s Location, reinstated its practice from the 1940s and also opens its polls at midnight.

Dixville Notch?  Hart’s Location?  All we need is Hot Air Hollow and we’ll have the hat trick.  In honor of the great work ahead of us today, let’s have an open thread on the early-morning kickoff.

Update: Dixville Notch goes to Obama, 15-6, but we thought New Hampshire would be blue this year.

1] I consider myself a moderate. I’ve voted that way in the past, considering all local, state, and national elections.
2] I live in a Republican enclave in near-urban Queens NYC.
3] For the first time EVER I did NOT vote for ONE Democrat. That includes for state senate, city council, etc.
4] Last night 7pm, I’m cozy on the couch with a meal in my belly, suddenly a booster for a local Democratic candidate knocked on the door. She asked me if I’ve ever heard of her candidate. “Yes, I DO recycle your mailers, 3 per day” I responded. “So?” she asked, “are you voting for our candidate?” [As if she was owed a response]. “I prefer to keep my vote PRIVATE, as it should be.” Ahhh the look on her face.
5] NYPD = workfare

That said, God Bless this Republic, God Bless Hot Air, God Bless Manly Rash.

I’ll vote when I get home from work this afternoon, and I’m voting McCain, yes on 8. Those are the biggies.

Oh, and Kevin Johnson for mayor. He ain’t great, but he’s magnitudes better than the mayor we’ve had!

I’m lucky enough to be able to walk across the street from my apartment to vote here in Chicago. I went right at 6:00 and waited for about an hour — unprecedented in my experience — I usually walk right in and right out first thing in the morning.

Since Illinois is SO VERY solidly blue, I had the luxury of voting my conscience. I passed over both Juan McAmnesty and That One. If I’d been in a battleground state I might have had to bite the bullet and vote McCain. Since I’m not, I’ll enjoy the twin luxuries of sleeping at night, and being able to say “Hey…I didn’t vote for him” for the next 4 years.

I’ll be downtown with my video and still cameras for the Obama festivities tonight!

thebaldchick on November 4, 2008 at 9:14 AM

Sorry, but I’ve just gotta vent somewhere. I downloaded (for free) the new David Byrne/Brian Eno single a couple months ago and got spammed today for my trouble:

Pardon the bulk mailing. I Can’t Vote. I am an immigrant with a Green Card and, therefore, I am not eligible to vote in a federal election…

But most of you can vote. What can I say? The Republicans have made us less safe than before 9/11, bankrupted this economy, started an illegal war they can’t – and don’t intend to – finish, removed what sympathy (after 9/11) and respect the world had for the US, and have robbed US citizens of many of their basic rights. Global warming? What’s that? Science and education? Investment in our future? No, thanks – we’ll stick with a good ‘ole hockey mom. Ignorant, and f***ing proud of it, as is always the case.

Although it looks like a shoo-in, it ain’t over ’til Florida. And there are plenty of racists in this country who will vote against their own best interests….

David Byrne
NYC

Well, jeez, Dave, you’ve lived in the US of Ignoramuses and Racists for more than 50 years and made quite the nice living tolerating us lesser beings outside of NYC, but you’ve never bothered to become a citizen, and now you’re gonna bitch about whom we elect? Blow me. Saint Kansas, Cleveland

saint kansas on November 4, 2008 at 9:20 AM

Kanda,

Since I’m not a “progressive,” I’m not the type to commit voter fraud. I don’t believe in disenfranchising people under the ridiculous guise of “get out the vote.”

Got in line at the ice rink (our voting place) at 6:50am. The first voter was there at 5:40am. Waited in line for an hour, I was voter number 254. Voted straight Rep for the first time ever.

Oh, and I wrote in my dead Lab’s name for Mayor. I figure he’d do a better job than the one we have now.

Blue-eyed Infidel on November 4, 2008 at 9:24 AM

Just came back from voting here in Chesapeake VA.

Lines not too bad. About an hour wait.

I thought they were going to give some out to the folks in line.

They didn’t.

Sun came up this morning and it’s going to be a very warm day in the Upper Peninsula. In November!!!

Off to the town hall to be one of the earlier ballots of the 30 or 31 registered voters in the township. Might have to wait in line for 30 or 40 seconds.

This very Democratic township has less than 5 voters going for Obama, according to my intel. The only Obama signs around were put up along the state highway by outsiders.

New Hampshire isn’t as conservative as it used to be. You have the wackos moving in from Massachusetts and Vermont to poison the atmosphere. It is also the home of the bishop who helped wreck my beloved Episcopal Church, the notorious V. Gene Robinson. So do not be surprised by the Dixville Notch vote, ladies and gentlemen. Vote anyway.

Believe he wrote the lyrics “stop making sense”. He lives his art, it seems…and hey, let’s not ALL jump on the “NYC sucks” bandwagon, there are some here voting smart, making sense, and not using our vote to make a vainglorious fru-fru fashion statement. Mercy, please. We don’t ALL own Tshirt-manufacturing urban-hippy collectives in Williamsburg. [Just the virulent majority, unfortunately]. My big fashion statement at the polling site this morning was wearing my fancy red necktie.

Being significant in pop music has little to do with talent. Still, Byrne could probably gross several hundred million dollars if he agreed to a Talking Heads reunion tour and album. He must be pretty into what he’s doing to let that opportunity pass.

dedalus on November 4, 2008 at 10:39 AM

Just back from working the polls in Northern Virginia. I gave out Republican sample ballots. The crowd wasn’t bad for my shift, but the lady in charge told me that it was halfway around the school in the wee hours of the morning! She added that she was encouraged by the number of people who took Republican ballots at that time. I was pleased during my shift as well. Quite a number took both ballots, but while I was keeping count (until I lost track), Republican ballots went faster than Democratic ones. The Democrats noticed it too; I saw them give each other “What gives?” looks once or twice, and one of them said in an explanatory way, “Well, this precinct did go for Bush . . .” (I don’t know if that’s true or not.)

Quite a few women were going for the Republican ones, I noticed.

I don’t want to pump everyone up before we see the results, but let’s keep hope alive! :-)

Though it’ll mean less than my vote here in Cleveland, I did hit Reply and emailed Mr. Byrne:

I’ll pardon the bulk mailing if you’ll indulge my reply.

I did vote today. For John McCain and the good ol’ hockey mom. I’ve been a longtime fan of both your music and (especially) Brian Eno’s, but I’m no fan of Barack Obama. I won’t bother to explain why: you’ve already made up a handy checklist below to simplify things. I’m apparently ignorant (and f***ing proud of it) and/or racist, anti-science, anti-education, pro-global warming… must be nice to have convenient little boxes in which to file away other human beings.

Would you prefer I no longer play your CDs (and records)? I’ve enjoyed them, but if it’s too much of an embarassment for you to know “the wrong people” are playing them, I’ll sell them back to you if you provide a mailing address.

Funny how the intellectual elite can tell you what the temperature of the entire globe will be 10 years from now but can’t figure out when human life begins. Ah, to be so smart.

Trust Manly on this. Manly is good. Manly is wise. Manly knows.

I cast my vote before 8 AM in the elementary school nearest my home. My wife and I were in and out in under 10 minutes. I did not pull the lever for a single democRAT. Never again. At least corrupt Republicans don’t betray their country in time of war.

Did AP vote this time around?

Just voted for McCain in Florida.

Hey Manly. Keep talking because I’m nervous, too, but I believe we can pull it off.

I don’t know who here watches Regis and Kelly. I know that I don’t, but they had an on-line poll live this morning. Mc was 55 and BO 44. I wonder if we are seeing things that people just kept to themselves, regarding this election. Racist is a horrible label to hang on people just because we are not drinking the Kool Aid.

I voted this morning in my Texas neighborhood. Its a beautifully sunny day here. There was no line whatsoever to vote. It took longer to fill out the ballot than the wait to get one. Texas is safe but I’m nervous about the rest of the country. The ‘Toast’ article Manly clued us onto provided me some comfort though. Thanks for that Manly.

Still . . .

Rush Limbaugh looking up a new quote from Virginia Democrat Senator regarding “Republican ANTIPATHY” as though the wealthy feel incorrectly that they have a right to retain private property.
