Open thread: Dixville Notch goes to the polls
posted at 12:01 am on November 4, 2008 by Ed Morrissey
It’s not at all predictive and it only involves 20 people, but it’s tradition. Dixville Notch goes to the polls at midnight:
Dixville Notch, a village in New Hampshire’s northeast corner, will begin voting at the stroke of 12 a.m. ET Tuesday, and the ballots won’t take long to tally: Dixville Notch only has about 20 registered voters.
The town, home to around 75 residents, has opened its polls shortly after midnight each Election Day since 1960, drawing national media attention for being the first place in the country to make its presidential preferences known.
But since 1996, another small New Hampshire town, Hart’s Location, reinstated its practice from the 1940s and also opens its polls at midnight.
Dixville Notch? Hart’s Location? All we need is Hot Air Hollow and we’ll have the hat trick. In honor of the great work ahead of us today, let’s have an open thread on the early-morning kickoff.
Update: Dixville Notch goes to Obama, 15-6, but we thought New Hampshire would be blue this year.

Rev. Wright doesn’t come across as a religious person. I’ve attended church all my life and have attended different denominations (my husband was an assistant pastor for 10 years) and I have never known a pastor who was full of hate the way Wright is. The only people who would see this as an attack on religion would be those who agree with him. Obama already has those votes.

Kini on November 4, 2008 at 2:01 AM
Dixville Notch voting history.
1992 – Bill Clinton got 3 while GHWBush got 9 votes.
1976 – Jimmy Carter got 6 while Ford got 11.
1960 (general election) Nixon got 9 while JFK got 0.
An interesting note here. Seems like every 16 years the winner of the Dixville Notch vote was the loser in the National election.
That last time that happened was in 1992. And 2008 will make it 16 years later from 1992 and if Obama won the Dixville Notch vote then perhaps a repeat of the “16 year Dixville Notch curse” will prevail and that McCain will win the race?

With all the talk of high turnout for Democrats, people seem to have forgotten that there was a record turnout in ’04 and Bush won by a few million votes. Could the high turnout benefit Democrats this year? Sure, but i still remember George Will saying on election night ’04 that the the idea of high turnout automatically benefiting Democrats had been dis- proven because of Bush’s win.

My husband got polled. But he messed around with the polling lady. He put on a weird accent and said he was voting for Obama cuz He did not want the price of arugula to go up. He also told her he was happy the “little people” would absorb the high cost of gas, and he asked her where she bought her light bulbs and where he could get one of those tire pressure thingies for the chauffeur to carry in his pocket cuz it looked “right”. We live in an apartment in Dallas, I’m a stay at home mom and he works. We barely clear 75,000 a year. But, he got a good laugh!!!

There can’t be any meaningful statistical correlation nor any causal relationship between Dixville Notch results and the election as a whole. Their votes are symbolic but don’t count for more or less than any others. What is telling, though, are sites like Rove’s and Sabato’s and even more so, the gambling sites. It’s all conjecture of course, but the weight of indicators tips heavily in Obama’s favor. As for me, I hope this election causes the bell in the middle of the curve to get larger. The far right’s hyperbolic fears about an Obama presidency match those of the far left’s hatred of GWB. I’d welcome a candidate that appeals to most of us, not just some of us.

If they haven’t voted Democrat since 1968, when Humphrey lost, that means they also picked the loser in 1976 (when Carter won), 1992 (Clinton won) and 1996 (Clinton again).
That’s a 5-4 record since 1968 — not exactly a reputable bell-weather predictor of election outcomes!

As most of America knows, Barack Obama is now poised to sweep to victory with at least 300 Electoral Votes, holding a massive eight point lead on average nationally over McCain at this late date. Several stories have bubbled up in the past few days, such as Obama’s comments on the coal industry, his alleged crude gesture towards McCain at a rally today and the identification of his Aunt as living in Boston, albeit without Obama’s knowledge according to his campaign. However, none of these stories seem to have the sheer force to push McCain up the giant electoral hill facing him tomorrow.
A late breaking story today could make the next 24 hours much more interesting as explosive allegations were published today in the American Spectator regarding Obama’s Aunt Zeituni Onyango (”Auntie Z”) confirming that the Obama Campaign and Mass. Governor Deval Patrick had knowledge of her illegal status and willful violation of the 2004 deportation order as early as 2007. If true, such actions by the Obama campaign and Patrick could constitute criminal acts according to Section 1324 under 8 U.S.C.A. 1324 (a)(1)(A)(iii) and (v).
The main source on for the published article regarding the Obama campaign’s knowledge of Auntie Z’s situation is an employee at AKP&D Message and Media, which is a political consulting firm employed by the Obama campaign. A secondary source for the fact that the Obama campaign was well aware of the status of Obama’s family members is an Obama campaign media aide. The gist of the allegations is that in early 2007, David Axelrod, the crack chief strategist for the Obama campaign, ordered a full investigation of all of Obama’s family members to prepare/defend against possible political attacks regarding Obama’s family during the campaign.
Obama’s position is that he had no knowledge of Auntie Z’s status as an illegal alien:
KATIE COURIC: you have an aunt who’s been living in this country apparently illegally, and your campaign says any and all appropriate laws should be followed. So would you support her being deported to Kenya?
SEN. BARACK OBAMA: If she has violated laws, then those laws have to be obeyed. We’re a nation of laws. And, obviously, that doesn’t lessen my concern for her. I haven’t been able to get in touch with her. But, I’m a strong believer that you obey the law.
According the main source at OBama’s political consulting firm, AKP&D Message and Media, here’s how Obama’s campaign came into knowledge of Auntie Z’s status and how it was dealt with:
Axelrod had actual knowledge of Auntie Z and all other relatives in early 2007, and decided to use Deval Patrick as a monitor over Auntie Z to make sure she stayed out of trouble and out of the media’s eye:
Back in early 2007, as Obama’s chief campaign strategist David Axelrod was organizing and planning the Obama campaign, he identified Obama’s unique family situation — a number of half-brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, some living overseas — as a potential problem, says an employee for Axelrod’s political consulting firm, and who has done work on the Obama campaign. “Given [Obama's] father’s family history here and in Africa, David wanted the campaign to know who was who, where they lived, and what they were doing. No surprises. We knew she was here illegally. We knew her income levels, but I don’t think anyone from the campaign had had contact with her.”
Instead, according to the source, Axelrod reached out to his former client, Patrick, who had retained Axelrod’s firm for his run for governor. Onyango was living in a state-funded housing project, “so Patrick’s people could just as easily keep track of things, and could do it without drawing a ton of attention,” says the AKP&D Message and Media employee, who requested anonymity as he hopes to get a job in an Obama administration should the candidate win. “If we had Obama people around, the media would probably have found her much sooner. She was in [Obama's] book, it wasn’t like she couldn’t be found.” Indeed, that is exactly how the London Times found her.
While the South Boston housing project is managed by the Boston Housing Authority, it is a state-funded facility, according to the BHA press office, and so it would not be uncommon for state housing officials to be on the grounds or in the area. “Patrick was the go-between, he’s trusted by David and Senator Obama,” says the aide.
An Obama campaign aide, the second source, at least partially confirms the AKP&D Message and Media employee’s account with respect to Axelrod’s knowledge of all Obama relatives:
Some Obama aides believe that Obama was briefed at least twice by Axelrod or campaign manager David Plouffe on the status of family members. “We tracked who was talking to the press, we kept in touch with some of these people,” says an Obama campaign media aide. “Anyone who thinks we didn’t doesn’t understand just how nervous we were about all of these people, particularly the members of [Obama's] father’s family. Axelrod had everything covered.” The aide said she was never present for such a briefing, but “we all knew the candidate’s family was being taken care of, to protect their privacy and try to contain any damage.”
To summarize, according to the two sources quoted by American Spectator, the Obama campaign was well aware of Auntie Z’s immigration status and presence in America in early 2007. Furthermore, if true, the Obama’s campaign used Axelrod’s client and Obama’s ally, Patrick, to keep watch over Auntie Z until after the election. The allegations of the two sources is confirmed in part by Auntie Z’s quoted response to the British press before they broke the story:
“I can’t talk about it, I just pray for him, that’s all,” she said, adding: “After the 4th, I can talk to anyone.”
It is well within the realm of possibility that Auntie Z would have only known to refuse comment if she was told to say that, likely by the Obama campaign. The two sources, Obama’s political consultant’s employee and the Obama campaign media aide, bolster this likely occurrance. The importance to tomorrow’s election becomes whether or not such agreement between the Obama campaign and Patrick to “monitor” Auntie Z until the election is a vioation of federal immigration laws, namely 8 U.S.C.A. 1324(a)(1)(a)(iii) and (v), which prohibit as a felony:
(a) Criminal Penalties
(1)(a) Any person who…
(iii) knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that an alien has come to, entered, or remains in the United States in violation of law, conceals, harbors, or shields from detection, or attempts to conceal, harbor, or shield from detection, such alien in any place, including any building or any means of transportation;…
(v)(I) engages in any conspiracy to commit any of the preceding acts, or
(II) aids or abets the commission of any of the preceding acts,
If the Obama campaign had knowledge of Auntie Z’s immigration status in early 2007, and then Axelrod worked with Patrick to suppress any uncovering of such status since then, there is an arguable violation of the statute above as such actions would each constitute an individual act which “conceals, harbors, or shields from detection, or attempts to conceal, harbor, or shield from detection, such alien”, as spelled out in (iii) in the statute above. Any Obama campaign employees or Patrick staffers could be liable for conspiracy to commit violations of the Section 1324 and aiding and abetting violations of Section 1324 under subsection (v).
A review of case law regarding this matter tends to support the position that the Obama campaign’s activities, in conjunction with Mass. Governor Patrick, could have violated Section 1324. Indeed, the entire purpose of Axelrod’s alleged contacts with Patrick regarding Auntie Z was to suppress the public disclosure of Auntie Z’s illegal alien status and the lawful, immediate deportation under the 2004 Order. If true, the statements quoted in the American Spectator make out a prima facia case for a criminal indictment under Section 1324. As the 5th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, U.S. v. Cantu, 557 F.2d 1173 (5th Cir. 1977) opines:
We agree with the conclusion in Lopez that section 1324 does not prohibit only smuggling-related activity, but also activity “tending substantially to facilitate an alien’s ‘remaining in the United States illegally.’ ” 521 F.2d at 441.
Jury instruction as to meaning of “shield.” Cantu requested that, in charging the jury concerning the meaning of “shield” as used in section 1324, the district judge include as a synonym the word “hide.” The judge declined to include “hide,” and Cantu contends that this refusal was error. Although “shield” and “hide” may in some contexts be synonymous, in the context of section 1324 they are not. Section 1324 forbids attempts “to conceal, harbor, or shield from detection.” Were “shield from detection” used synonymously with “hide” then “conceal” would be redundant. Therefore, the district judge did not err in omitting from his charge “hide” as a synonym for “shield from detection.”
If Axelrod coordinated with Patrick to keep watch over Auntie Z since early 2007, with knowledge of Auntie Z’s status as facing a deportation order, a prima facia case can be made under Section 1324 for a criminal indictment. Considering the seriousness of these allegations, CentristNet hopes that the mainstream media moves to ask these questions before America votes tomorrow. Moderate, centrist and independent voters will be on the edge of their seats to see what the Obama campaign and the mainstream media has to say about his interesting controversy.
The ultimate question is whether voters agree with Obama’s position that he had no knowledge of Auntie Z’s situation, or whether voters tend to distrust Obama’s position that he had no knowledge. Perhaps such issues will be irrelevant as Obama has promised not to speak wth the press until after the election. Regardless, the Auntie Z episode leaves many questions unanswered by the Obama campaign, and every centrist, independent moderate voter can only hope that the Obama campaign decides to provide information regarding their actions pertaining to Auntie Z prior to the election tomorrow.

My Obot story:
I was feeding the kids a snack yesterday afternoon, front door open and our dog was going “potty” outside, so, I looked out and saw a hippie volvo (well, kindof like our hippie volvo which throws a lot of hippies off due to our conservative stickers) so I walked out there and this lady came up my sidewalk asking if my address was what she had on her list. I registered as an Independent when W decided he wanted to grow government exponentially. At any rate, she was rightfully weirded out that I, a registered independent, have a McCain sign in my front lawn…and NOBAMA stickers on my car, I guess. I was up front with her when I saw the glossy Obama indoctrination pamphlets and said “If you are with the Obama campaign, I am not interested.” She stopped, “You aren’t?” I said, “No, I plan on voting for John McCain.” She gave me the dirtiest look and said, “You ARE?” I said, “Yes, proudly.”
She left.
Really was shocking to her that I’d be voting the way I am. That was the striking part of it all…just utter disbelief. Weirdo.

We can’t afford another Carter. Most if not all of the problems we face today stem from the four years of Carter and Dem majority. Iraq, Iran, our energy problems, subprime lending etc. etc. etc. all stem from Carter. Today Ladies and Gentelmen, we are in the valley, clad in our battlegear, awaken to the day by a force from within, a purpose, a mission, battle lies ahead!
We have been joined this “MORNING IN AMERICA” by PUMA’s, Reagan Democrates, RHINO’s, Conservatives, peoples of all faiths, of all social backgrounds, of ALL races, arm in arm, shoulder to shoulder, clinging to our God, our Guns, our Flag, our Constitution!
We are looking up at a huge mountain, with a fortress of the far left radicals inside awaiting our attack. The Socilialists, protected all the way up the hill by the MSM, and with Pundits blocking our paths, the task is daunting and will require all of the effort a human can muster!
But we are bolstered by our faith, comforted by that still small voice inside… Fortified by the knowledge that from our efforts here today our children and thiers will grow up in a FREE, PROUD, STRONG AMERICA… The America of our Founders, of our Grandfathers and Fathers, of our FALLEN HEROS who gave it all for our RIGHT TO FIGHT TODAY!
Drawing comfort from our friends, family, church and our mission we march onward, “RUSH”ing up the hill, tossing aside all the Pundits, embarrasing the MSM, confronting the radicals and leaving them wondering what hit them…
VICTORY AWAITS for all those willing to lay it all on the line today! Are you ready? Will you fight? Will you vote?
IT’s MORNING IN AMERICA once again… McCain WINS!

Just got home from voting, holy packed polls Batman. I have voted at this same location for 14 years and NEVER have I seen it so crowded…so early. I got there about 5 min before they opened and already the line was easily 25 deep (I live in a pretty small suburban neighborhood). I`m PUMPED!!
McCain/Palin…errr TODAY!

**** Just found out that my yard sign was hit by a DEAD DEER! No joke, it was hit on the road un front of my house and thrown into my McCain sign!
Just wondering if the DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS WAS OBAMA???
BTW, my sign is still STANDING STRONG, the DEER, no so much!
Mark Garnett on November 4, 2008 at 7:06 AM
You know, you never hear McCain supporters threatening they’re going to move to France or Canada if Obama gets elected. So, even if Obama wins today, we have to remember, we still love this country and we’ll still be willing to fight for it and the next election. Now, if only the libs would actually stick to their idle threats, we’d all be a lot better off.

Just finished voting in Henrico County Virginia (Richmond suburb). I got to the polling place at 5:50 and there were over 200 people waiting in line. In my 20 years of voting here, I have never, ever seen a line like that.
Heavy, heavy turnout here.

My SW Ohio voting experience: two suburban precincts in the very north of the county containing Cincinnati. Surprisingly long line, but one precinct (mine) was clearly less busy than the other.
I got through the line quickly, probably the sixth person to vote in my precinct. Mark-in-the-square ballots followed by scanning. I assume it works. Oh, I arrived wearing a McCain-Palin cap thinking that there might be some restriction–but screw ‘em. Not until I was signing in did some whiny voter in line point it out. The elderly poll worker smiled and politely asked me to take it off.
No sweat.
When I drove into the subdivision where the polling place was located, I saw three McCain-Palin signs. When I left, the area had at least five Obama-Biden signs. I don’t care, but I think you can expect that Obama has every precinct manned with idiots ready to complain about anything. Why not? The lazy a**es all took the day off at his request.
Man, I hope McCain-Palin prevail.

I thought the same about turnout where I voted: through the roof.
The question becomes which was does this cut? Fine, blacks come out in droves, but the libtards have usually always been big voters. The new people going to the polls seem to be those who never felt strongly one way or another. I sure hope the Silent Majority shows up and announces, “We ain’t havin’ any of this Jeremiah Wright-, Bill Ayers-, and anti-American thinking in the White House.”
Please let it be so.

Obama wins by a landslide!!! (Called by MSNBC, CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS at 12:05am EST)

We received a phone call last night asking if we were planning on voting for Obama. My response was “Hell no!”. The woman was literally speechless. She sputtered and tried to regain her composure; before she could say anything else, I asked where they got our number from, and all she could say was ‘uh, is your husband a union member?’, which got another strong ‘no’ response.
She couldn’t get off the phone fast enough.
Off to vote for McCain/Palin and Coleman!

Heh. Me too. I told the guy on the phone I would vote for Obama if they’d drop off my $600 rebate check first. I told him I didn’t trust any politician and that if I didn’t get my check before I went to the polls today, I was going to vote for McCain.

Finally, we have come to the appointed day where we go from abstract talk about transforming America to decisive action. The Messiah has assigned me to go out today and purchase a tire pressure gauge to bring down energy prices.

My wife, my 19 year old, and myself will go to the booth this morning and vote 100% Republican across the table! Montana will go to McCain/Palin, and we will boost the Republican majority in our state!
Lots of talk here about the black-white racism on display by black America & the Democrat Party!

Read this:
(Guest Post by Bill Dyer a/k/a Beldar)
The major networks called Florida for Al Gore in 2000 while tens of thousands of voters had yet to vote in the westernmost part of that state which is situated within the Central time zone. The people who made those disastrous decisions at their respective networks that night mostly didn’t get fired. They’re mostly still there.
In the early afternoon of Election Day four years ago, conservative pundits all over the internet were thoroughly panicked. They were buying into the mainstream media’s exit polling and general meme of “It’s Kerry!”
They, and the mainstream media, had completely failed to anticipate the record-shattering rank-and-file turnout of traditional conservatives, and of independents and moderates who were persuaded that Kerry was too far to the left to be entrusted with the reins of government during wartime.
As I wrote that evening, my hero of that day was Hugh Hewitt, whose calm reassurance was a sharp contrast to the hysteria at places like NRO’s The Corner.
The GOP base was dispirited in the 2006 congressional elections. Now, victory is in sight in Iraq, and our ticket is headed by the GOP leader from the Senate who has most steadfastly supported that victory. The economy is more troubled, but we know better than to seek the sort of remedies — higher taxes, more government programs — that the Democrats always prescribe. And in Sarah Palin, we have a candidate on our ticket who’s emblematic of the 21st Century conservatism we’ll need going forward — one which may leave the George Wills and Peggy Noonans and David Brookses perplexed, but which energizes common-sense middle-Americans like no Republican politician since Ronald Reagan. The 2006 results, in this context, mean nothing.
This year, however, the mainstream media is at least 10 times as skewed toward Obama as they were for Kerry in 2004 or Gore in 2000. And all of their models are based on assumptions — foremost among them that young voters and newly registered voters who have no history of actually voting will nevertheless break decisively, overwhelmingly, for one side only. They will cling to those assumptions until the bitter end because they fit with their own profound subjective desires. The mainstream media therefore won’t begin to report races as even being “close” until the McCain-Palin ticket has a substantial lead.
I would be stunned if the mainstream media maintain anything remotely approximating objectivity tomorrow. And remember, even sources like Fox News that are trying to be report what’s happening in an honest fashion are largely going to be confined to the same raw data sources and spin doctors as the other networks — garbage in, garbage out.
I am not pessimistic. Nor am I filled with a false and foolish confidence, because my team are the underdogs — what an utter non-surprise that is! Every plausible scenario for a McCain-Palin victory this year has included a gut-wrenching Election Day. One day out, we are fortunate indeed that this is by no means a lost cause, and that our side has a real fighting chance.
And right now, in fact, my predominate feeling is of curiosity: I’m intensely curious to see whether the American public will demonstrate again that profound seriousness of purpose it demonstrated in 2004, or whether too many of its members will be seduced by visions of hopey-changitude.
Pay no mind to exit polls, nor to any press coverage until the polls are closed in at least all of the continental 48 states. Most important of all: Wherever you live, treat your own vote as if it might decide the election.
I’ll be posting here during the day and into the evening, as, I’m sure, will be Hugh. But after you’ve voted, and after you’ve done your best to help get out the vote for your team, don’t be reluctant to just turn off the TV news and walk away from the computer for a few hours tomorrow. In fact, it might be a great night for dinner out, a movie, or a good book.
Keemo on November 4, 2008 at 8:06 AM
Dixville Notch only has about 20 registered voters.
-Dixville Notch goes to Obama, 15-6, but we thought New Hampshire would be blue this year.
Um, am I the only who can figure out 15+6=21???
Did a dead guy vote straight out of the gates or what????

I believe that exit polls, news prognostications, etc., are meant to stifle voting. Regardless of what they may do in West BF, I voted this morning at 6 AM, and I voted for McCain. To say that “as NH goes, so goes the nation” is just an obsequious way to say, “nyah, nyah, your vote doesn’t count because you’ve already lost”.
It isn’t over until it’s over folks. Get out there and vote.
