Open thread: Dixville Notch goes to the polls

It’s not at all predictive and it only involves 20 people, but it’s tradition. Dixville Notch goes to the polls at midnight:
Dixville Notch, a village in New Hampshire’s northeast corner, will begin voting at the stroke of 12 a.m. ET Tuesday, and the ballots won’t take long to tally: Dixville Notch only has about 20 registered voters.
The town, home to around 75 residents, has opened its polls shortly after midnight each Election Day since 1960, drawing national media attention for being the first place in the country to make its presidential preferences known.
But since 1996, another small New Hampshire town, Hart’s Location, reinstated its practice from the 1940s and also opens its polls at midnight.
Dixville Notch? Hart’s Location? All we need is Hot Air Hollow and we’ll have the hat trick. In honor of the great work ahead of us today, let’s have an open thread on the early-morning kickoff.
Update: Dixville Notch goes to Obama, 15-6, but we thought New Hampshire would be blue this year.

If you think this is bad, wait until those exit polls come out tomorrow.

I would have rather went to bed on a better note… but this’ll do.
I’ve always said this is Obama’s election to lose. We’ll see if he does or not.
GET OUT AND VOTE! Take people with you! Phone bank tomorrow! Knock on neighbor’s doors! Drag McCain over the finish line!

I remember when the DUmmies made such a big deal about this town voting more for Kerry than they did for Gore. Like that was supposed to be a harbinger of the day.

This town might have always voted republica in the past but there are more registered Democrats there this year so it is no great surprise that Obama would win it.
johnt on November 4, 2008 at 12:53 AM
sheesh this is like 4 families. it’s not a “Trend”
i have a friend whose extended adult voting family consists of 2 republicans and 4 democrats
2 repubs are voting for mccain because they like mccain
1 dem is voting for mccain bc she likes hillary
1 dem is voting for nader bc she cant vote for either
1 dem is voting for bob barr because he thinks mccain is too old but hates obama
and 1 dem is voting for mccain because she LOVES palin, even though they differ on abortion, she thinks palin has been treated badly
so what is that? in a family obama “should” win, obama will get “0″ votes.
trend?
nope. just a small group that don’t mean nothin.
battleoflepanto1571 on November 4, 2008 at 12:54 AM
And I am praying it will go our way… I just don’t like what (admittedly) early results I am seeing… you don’t want “undeclared” (a.k.a. undecided) going in droves to Obama as they did in Dixville… and you don’t want Republicans bolting to Obama and Dems rallying to Obama as both did in Hart’s Landing.
Manly: Your pep talks are great and so is your optimism. But we still might come up short.

carbon_footprint on November 4, 2008 at 12:56 AM
Dont sweat it Republican. I lived in a state that always elected democrats to every office no matter what level. I come from WV where Byrd has been a senator longer than I have been alive and I was born in 1962.
So have seen how badly the democrats govern. Pelosi and Reid are chomping at the bit to get a guy who will give them everything they want. The last time that happened was 1976 and the economy went in the toilet and America fell into a weak state where Iran and the Soviet Union were on the rise.
Then Ronald Reagan came and taught America how badly the democrats suck. History is repeating its pattern. We cant get our Ronald Reagan till the democrats elect their Jimmy Carter again.
William Amos on November 4, 2008 at 12:58 AM
If you play with electoral history long enough, you can make any comparison sound valid. The last time a Dem won Dixville N was 1968? So? NIXON THE REPUBLICAN won N.H. and the election that year
If you want to compare this election to another, try 1980: Reagan was behind in the polls until just before the election, when the media and pollsters said it was ‘close’ but Carter would likely pull it off
Reagan won 50-45, with 5 for a renegade RINO.
Millions of non-conservative, non-Republican voters went for the first true conservative since Calvin Coolidge ( a man Regan greatly admired ).
Carter was better known because he was the incumbent, but was judged to be incompetent, and essentially inexperienced even after being Prez for four years–because he could not learn how to Not Screw Up
Janos Hunyadi on November 4, 2008 at 12:58 AM

CanadianGuy on November 4, 2008 at 1:05 AM
In both Dixville Notch and Hart’s Location, more people voted Democrat than in the Dem. primary, and less people voted Republican than the Rep. primary. Hopefully not a harbinger..

As long as we keep relying on the same 30 states to win, every election will be a nailbiter. I know the West Coast and New England are impossible, but can’t we make progress in some of the Midwest?
Speedwagon82 on November 4, 2008 at 1:05 AM
Since 1960, Dixville Notch has gone with the winner six times and the loser six times.
clearbluesky on November 4, 2008 at 1:06 AM
I’m cautiously optimistic. I can see and visualize a McCain win, easily.
But I know it’s a hill to climb. Obama’s election to lose from the coronation two years ago. The Media failed to coronate Kerry in 2004, in part, due to Dan Rather’s failure at the faux-cuments. They’re lock step in sync this time.
Enoxo on November 4, 2008 at 1:07 AM
Not a harbinger. Just typical for that part of New England.

William Amos on November 4, 2008 at 12:39 AM
William,
Before every election we hear about the youth vote, etc. The basic fact is that they don’t. Period. Let’s take this scenerio: Line winds around the polling place, poll worker informs you it is a three hour wait. A college kid and a conservative are in line together. Who is going to wait the three hours? A kid who thinks Obama is the bomb, or a guy who thinks his very way of life, his family, his prosperity, and his beliefs are waiting to be decided at the end of that line? This video sums it up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IReMfvamQ28
The numbers may look bad now, but lets wait to see who is still standing tomorrow night. We never give up. Never.

States where one party dominates for more than a generation develop a ‘political culture’: a climate in public life where it is Normal and Expected than everyone be a Dem–and if you’re not, you need to explain yourself
That combined with corruption-nepotism is a hard Nut to crack….
Minnesota and Wisconsin are becomming more like New Jersey and Mass in this respect

My two college age sons are not voting because one turned in his registration form a day late and the other forgot to register. The sad part is that they would have voted for McCain. But no doubt they are typical of college students. It is important to them but not important enough.

maybe mccain never visited there and they are mad. maybe their girlfriend/wife said ‘no loving unless you vote obama’. maybe the other R’s were out of town. or sick. or died this year. maybe R’s moved since 2004 because they were tired of liberal northeastern governments, and retired to florida. maybe someone overslept. maybe a single parent couldn’t leave her kids at home on midnight and didn’t get to vote for mccain.
the point is, WHO THE FREAK CARES? it’s not a “TREND”, its 2 villages that are smaller than a subway car.

I know that a lot of people wish that the coal story had broken sooner, or that the Khalidi tape had been released, but in a way, I think fear of the unknown and to some extent the un-spun truth will work in favor of McCain/Palin. Given time, Obama, with the help of his media pals, would have whitewashed both to the point that many voters’ fears would have been allayed, IMHO. It’s what they’ve been doing throughout this election, and in a lot of ways, they’ve done it well (through suppression of evidence, lying, etc.).
Whatever else anyone may think of John McCain the fact that he loves his country can’t be debated among sane individuals. In the polling booth, when faced with a choice about a guy with some shady associations, little experience, and now with a vague notion that Obama wants to bankrupt (scary word) an American institution, I have to believe the fencesitters will fall into McCain’s yard. I believe that this country isn’t ready to trade in its democracy for socialism just yet, and I think that McPalin hit that point home hard enough to resonate with many, many voters.
At the end of the day I believe McCain will win because as imperfect as he may be, he does represent all that is good, loyal, proud, and sacrificial about America. Having nothing to do with skin color and everything to do with ideology, Obama simply cannot claim that representation, not with his oratorical skills, his flourishes, or Acorn votes.
Being a part of this great nation means that I believe that however misguided we may be at times, and regardless of how we sometimes lose our way, America will always rise to the occasion of promoting what makes us great over what would make us popular, and in some cases what is demanded by those with agendas diametrically opposed to the ideals at the foundation of America.
haikusrock on November 4, 2008 at 1:34 AM
.000034% of the electorate has voted….in New Hampshire! These results don’t suck because they are meaningless. You are from Ohio right? Do you honestly think this state is going for Obama? Have you talked to the people in your neighborhood? Just east of Cleveland yesterday I went door-to-door for 7 hours and heard story after story from people who are flat out pissed off. They feel that he is buying this election and the media is helping him to win. A guy in his 70’s talked to me for 10 minutes on his front porch how he felt this was the most important election in his lifetime. This guy was fired up and so where the majority of people I talked to. I shook his hand and promised him that our voices will be heard on the 4th. I visited over 150 houses, 4 people told me they were voting for McCain. If Ohio goes for Obama, I’ll join that dude from Virginia on a desert island with Pelosi. Read my lips. MCCAIN is going to win this damn thing. This is not false optimism, or some BS bravado. I promise you that if everyone who feels the way I do does their part, McCain will win. Period.

If the election is close and the GOP challenges many of the votes they can still be tossed out. The Supreme Court can force Jennifer Brunner and other dems to discard ballots that are suspect.

These people know that a good chunk of the nation (perhaps the world) is watching them vote.
That’s got to influence how they vote, especially in a ‘historic election’ where people want to be a part of history….the FIRST people to vote for the FIRST black president.
Add to that the fact that it’s a small town. When small groups vote, it’s easy to figure out who voted for what. This can only add pressure to vote for the popular candidate.
Sure, I’m a bit bummed they didn’t go our way. I’m not worried about this being an indication of things to come though.

Not directly asked of me, but I think the Rev. Wright issue is very tricky. Most people see religion as deeply personal, and while I’m 100% on board with Wright being wrong, and Obama being indoctrinated further into socialism while a part of Wright’s church, there were a lot of other ways that McCain could’ve gone after Obama on these issues(and more effectively, IMHO) than via Rev. Wright.
An attack on Rev. Wright would to some feel like an attack on their religion. Some people would only see McCain going after religion. A lot of people have traditions or rituals that would seem weird or crazy to “outsiders,” and so I think the Rev. Wright attack angle could’ve been a negative and/or backfired. Also, added to that you have Palin who is deeply religious, and that’s potentially opening up a whole can of crazy religious worms. A little tit-for-tat if you will. Rev. Wright with whitey = bad, anyone in Palin’s church that has ever said anything negative about non-white, non-heterosexuals, etc. We already had the prayer about witches story threatening to break wide open. Rolls eyes.
For McCain to directly address Wright was, because of the religious aspect, always going to be a double-edged sword, IMHO. That said, I wish the PACs had been quicker to act on McCain’s behalf.

Voting in the morning then it’s off to work at 2pm. I don’t get off until 11pm (CST).
Work rules: No cells, no radio, no TV, no internet access.

Obama picked up almost all of the undeclared voters.
My God. Undecides are breaking for Obama by 33%!!!!
:-)
Have a good night all. Sleep well with visions of Olbermann dropping the F-Bomb on the air live at 1:35 AM when they call the election for McCain. When your alarm clocks go off tomorrow, pop out of bed ready to save this nation.
My high school football coach had a movie quote I loved that he would break out for the big games, “We came to chew bubble gum and kick ass…and were fresh out of gum”. To quote Manly,”Let’s bring this shit home”.
Goodnight.
