Open thread: Dixville Notch goes to the polls

posted at 12:01 am on November 4, 2008 by Ed Morrissey

It’s not at all predictive and it only involves 20 people, but it’s tradition.  Dixville Notch goes to the polls at midnight:

Dixville Notch, a village in New Hampshire’s northeast corner, will begin voting at the stroke of 12 a.m. ET Tuesday, and the ballots won’t take long to tally: Dixville Notch only has about 20 registered voters.

The town, home to around 75 residents, has opened its polls shortly after midnight each Election Day since 1960, drawing national media attention for being the first place in the country to make its presidential preferences known.

But since 1996, another small New Hampshire town, Hart’s Location, reinstated its practice from the 1940s and also opens its polls at midnight.

Dixville Notch?  Hart’s Location?  All we need is Hot Air Hollow and we’ll have the hat trick.  In honor of the great work ahead of us today, let’s have an open thread on the early-morning kickoff.

Update: Dixville Notch goes to Obama, 15-6, but we thought New Hampshire would be blue this year.

You might follow your own advice Manly and have done some amount of GOTV ops such as phone banking or doorknocking. – Republican on November 4, 2008 at 12:24 AM

Trust me, I’m doing my share.

I think we should go to Dixville Notch and take their money and give it to someone else.

Heck I was a lad when LBJ was president and a teen when Carter won the presidency. So I have seen the worst that the democratic party can give us.

William Amos on November 4, 2008 at 12:26 AM

I want to see whether Obama over or under-performs as compared to Kerry in Dixville Notch and Hart’s Location.

I know, I know…. It’s not really predictive. But it’s all I have to go on until 7PM when the polls start closing!

(Until then, I’m hoping and praying for a miracle for the country……)

acasilaco on November 4, 2008 at 12:26 AM

It’s at Drudge. I’m not sure they can replicate the 4% over-vote nationwide.

Just rolled in from work. Took Obama advice and called off tomorrow to give every single ounce of energy in my frigging body to making sure John McCain wins Ohio and the presidency. Alarm clock set for 6:00am at county HQ by 6:30. Knock on doors, make calls, give rides… we can do this people. For our children’s and country’s sake, let’s all say a prayer tonight before bed that America doesn’t lose her mind tomorrow. STAND AND FIGHT

Historic vote this morning in the village of Dixville Notch, NH. The traditionally Republican enclave near the Canadian border went Democratic.

The tally, according to CNN, is Barack Obama – 15, John McCain – 6.

This is the first time in 40 years the town has picked a Democrat. The last time was 1968, when Dixville picked Hubert Humphrey over Richard Nixon.

Ha! Ha! Ha! I think the RINO will beat the pseudo -socialist again.

BTW, all the “OMG BUSH WON OVER KERRY HERE IN 04″ gloom and doomers — maybe the town had soldiers in iraq at the time and they supported bush > kerry and in 08 there aren’t any soldiers there.
maybe mccain never visited dixville and they are p$#$$ed about it.
maybe kerry was seen to be a true elite, or maybe folks in tip top north NH HATE people from massachusetts
maybe they’ve never seen a black guy and think obama is ‘exotic’.
maybe they have bets on intrade that obama would win dixville notch
maybe no-bama astroturfed and had some staffers move there.

who the heck knows?? and who the heck CARES???

carbon_footprint on November 4, 2008 at 12:47 AM

Something to buck everyone up

At his campaign headquarters on Franklin Street, Republican William Russell staged a news conference looking to defend himself against what he called Murtha’s lies and personal attacks.

Russell shot back hard.

“The sad thing is he’s not just telling lies, he’s not even telling smart lies,” Russell said.

Murtha’s attack ads have accused Russell of living not in Johnstown but in Virginia, of being under investigation by the Army for illegal campaigning and of writing himself a $185,000 paycheck from the last three months of his campaign.

Russell denied the accusations and offered documents to refute the attacks.

“If I live in Virginia, why does Mr. Murtha keeping sending me his mailers,” Russell said, holding a Murtha advertisement mailed to Russell’s Johnstown address.

William Amos on November 4, 2008 at 12:48 AM

How much do you think each of Obama’s 15 votes cost? Do you imagine for a nanosecond that his campaign spared any expense to get the psychological advantage of the first win? They will try to depress the vote any way they can.

Come on, people, buck up. Hillary lost Dixville Notch and won the whole state.

If you play with electoral history enough, you can find any pattern you wantl work hard enough and you can link any event to any other and make a valid argument

If you want a comparison of this election, try 1980: Reagan behind the polls until suddenly emerging to be allegedly ‘close’ just before the election

He won 50-45, with 5 for a RINO renegade. Carter was the incumbent, but had shown himself to be inexperienced and unable to ‘learn on the job’. He was judged to be incompent, and a lot of non-conservatives and non-Republicans voted for the first true conservative since Calvin Cooledge ( a man Reagan greatly admired )

Actually Manly, that sucks — look at the primary results for the Dems and Repubs in 2008… Obama gained 8 votes, McCain gained 9… that is not a trend you want to see repeated elsewhere. Look for yourself – Republican on November 4, 2008 at 12:47 AM

Not impressed. Given the area of the country and the saturation of pro-Obama sentiment, I’m encouraged.

again…. this is a small sample…..

maybe bobbi joe was out of town. maybe jimmie lou’s car broke down. maybe hank went to the store and was late getting there. we don’t know who didn’t show up.

BTW, all the “OMG BUSH WON OVER KERRY HERE IN 04″ gloom and doomers
— maybe the town had soldiers in iraq at the time and they supported bush > kerry and in 08 there aren’t any soldiers there.
maybe mccain never visited dixville and they are p$#$$ed about it.
maybe kerry was seen to be a true elite, or maybe folks in tip top north NH HATE people from massachusetts
maybe they’ve never seen a black guy and think obama is ‘exotic’.
maybe they have bets on intrade that obama would win hartsfield’s heck.
maybe no-bama astroturfed and had some staffers move there.

who the heck knows?? and who the heck CARES???

I agree with you completely. It’s out of our hands now, but it’s still in God’s.
