Open thread: Dixville Notch goes to the polls

It’s not at all predictive and it only involves 20 people, but it’s tradition. Dixville Notch goes to the polls at midnight:
Dixville Notch, a village in New Hampshire’s northeast corner, will begin voting at the stroke of 12 a.m. ET Tuesday, and the ballots won’t take long to tally: Dixville Notch only has about 20 registered voters.
The town, home to around 75 residents, has opened its polls shortly after midnight each Election Day since 1960, drawing national media attention for being the first place in the country to make its presidential preferences known.
But since 1996, another small New Hampshire town, Hart’s Location, reinstated its practice from the 1940s and also opens its polls at midnight.
Dixville Notch? Hart’s Location? All we need is Hot Air Hollow and we’ll have the hat trick. In honor of the great work ahead of us today, let’s have an open thread on the early-morning kickoff.
Update: Dixville Notch goes to Obama, 15-6, but we thought New Hampshire would be blue this year.

I predict a McCain victory there and elsewhere!
carbon_footprint on November 4, 2008 at 12:02 AM
Ed, any background on how often the two places have elected the president? My guess would be each time a Democrat won.
carbon_footprint on November 4, 2008 at 12:04 AM
Come on NH, show a trend!!! Ah, I’m so pumped.
MobileVideoEngineer on November 4, 2008 at 12:04 AM
Only 20 registered voters, yes. But is there an ACORN office nearby?
It would truly be great to see Obama win 50-13.
VolMagic on November 4, 2008 at 12:04 AM
Oh wow. A thread to myself.
carbon_footprint on November 4, 2008 at 12:04 AM
Technically with all the rearly voting they arent first.
BTW keep in mind the idea of provisional ballots. Those are ballots that have an irregularity (not signed or having matching info)
They are set aside till AFTER the vote. So even with all the election returns tomorrow there will still be ballots out there waiting
William Amos on November 4, 2008 at 12:04 AM
Voter enthusiasm for McCain/Palin supporters are at a high I believe and people want to be comfortable with a candidate they can trust. McCain/Palin will win with a comfortable margin in electoral college.
jencab on November 4, 2008 at 12:04 AM
Those sound like towns that would vote for someone from Wasilla.

Alternativly, Notch could go down as the first racist town in America this cycle if it racistly chooses the racist candidate who likes racism.

Republican on November 4, 2008 at 12:07 AM
Correct me if I am wrong but I thought most states don’t bother to count the provisional ballots unless it could tip the outcome of a election.

You betcha! When you only have 20 people, it is hard to rely on Big Brother, Big Government, or Socialism. It is called self reliance. It terrifies the Obamanuts.
Laura in Maryland on November 4, 2008 at 12:10 AM
No they count. Just that Kerry did the math in 2004 and discovered that those provisional ballots even if he got every single one of them wouldnt give him victory.

Public service announcement:
I put the phone number in my cellphone for when I go vote tomorrow.

Obama 15 McCain 6 in Notchville.
journeyscarab on November 4, 2008 at 12:12 AM
Clearly not, or else they’d have 95 registered voters in a county with 75 people.
But it is kind of sad to see that in a historic town like that, that little of the population is registered to vote.

iirc, dixville notch has never shown a correlation to NH’s results, let alone the country’s …
/still, rather disappointing they would go for duh1 all the same …
Buckaroo on November 4, 2008 at 12:17 AM
We know it’s 21 votes… that said though, this little town has always been Republican for the most part… it’s a pretty crappy early early indicator when it goes for Obama…. *urp*
Republican on November 4, 2008 at 12:17 AM
I’ve stood in that room they vote in several times. If you guys go up there sometime make sure to stop by…the polling place is at a stunning mountain hotel (get the buffet brunch its outta this world!) where pretty much all the residents work. Probably the country’s most historical polling place, save maybe Independence Hall.
Dr. Manhattan on November 4, 2008 at 12:17 AM
The results are not in yet. Calm down
Elizabetty on November 4, 2008 at 12:18 AM
***CHILL OUT*** THERE ARE MORE DEMS THAN GOP :)
PRIMARY results:
7 Obama
2 Edwards
1 Richardson
0 HILLARY
4 McCain
2 Romney
1 Huckabee
…by my math, dems outnumber repubs in dixville notch, PUMA POPULTION: 0.
i watched it live on msnbc and saw david shuster smiling. that will be the last time, as tomorrow night all of new hampshire goes mccain 52-48!

Republican on November 4, 2008 at 12:21 AM
Actually the MSM has already called the whole election for OBAMA!
mycowardice on November 4, 2008 at 12:21 AM
CNN: The result in Dixville Notch is, however, hardly a reliable bellwether for the eventual winner of the White House or even the result statewide.
bdestini on November 4, 2008 at 12:21 AM
WRONG. town has always had republican VOTERS UNTIL 2004. (fixed it)
there are more dems in little dixville notch now. why? who knows, maybe the gop died off. maybe the dems are maids in the hotel where they voted. but its 21 freaking people, and obama had as many primary votes as all republicans combined, and oh yeah hillary (WHO WON NEW HAMPSHIRE) got “0″ votes in da notch.
calm down. McCain will win this. more dems > gop + 0 pumas = obama win.
